Despite common belief, if I were a bird I would most definitely be a Grey Crowned Rosy Finch

The grey-crowned rosy finch is described as “chunky” but I think they’re svelte. They are believed to be monogamous (apparently some ornithologists have their suspicions) and the males help to incubate & feed the babies. They love to fight for food at feeders, which must just be some kind of sport, because surely they know that humans will keep those things stocked with an endless supply of food, that’s the whole point . . . #birdillustration #birdpainting #birdart #birddrawing #birdsofinstagram #pnwbirds #naturejournal #naturejournaling #drawingbirds #paintingbirds #gouacheillustration #gouachepaint #gouacheart #gouachebird (at Portland, Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cfh3hMKvZwB/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Birds of Eaglenest
(i) Grey-headed bullfinch
when finches visit, the trees are full of melody tunes of eternal raintime in their fibres neither only black nor only white but tunes as lovely as the nuanced greys of their heads crowns, if you may, that they're indifferent to tunes as arresting as the shade of brown on their bulged furry ball of a belly I want to cup in the palms of my hands tunes blooming in a bullfinch’s throat songs for me to find words to
(ii) Black-faced warbler
in evergreen forests sighing through their moss-ridden trees in their shrubby undergrowths and ravines I long to see you -- a dab of bold yellow with patches of grey and black and white prancing around and say 'hello' to you when I hear your shrill tinkle unfurling off your vocal cords in the subtropical forests a furry little bundle of ridiculous delight for now. and then. and ever.
(iii) Green-tailed sunbird
colourful chaos in flight or perched on anything that can bear your sweet sweet weight of scintillating hues it is sweet mockery, when the mountain woods are obscured in my vision as I see this movement of vibrant colours all smeared onto your little being when you pierce the air with your glossy beak allow me to feel the pangs
(iv) Black-faced laughingthrush
in the high altitudes of the northeast forests echo its high-pitched songs in quick phrases and notes in the shades of its dark-brown plumes and wings is the beauty of my homeland soil it takes my love under its wings as I fill my senses with its grand existence: its stern gaze to remind me how strangely familiar a new stare can be and the flutter of its wings to remind me how my heartbeat can rhyme with it
(v) Mrs. Gould’s sunbird
you hang upside down to reach those rosy blossoms and turn the whole world upside down when I wonder how the whole world gets inebriated as you get drunk on the sweet nectar your own crimsons and yellows singing songs of sweet disparities
(vi) Pygmy wren-babbler
this wad of dark olive is pygmy but profound poetry lowlands and understoreys of montane forests is where it lives its happy life I know I cannot miss the song of its heart its perfectly-spaced, high-pitched ti-ti-tu ruffling the forest air, at least around itself even in its tailless tale of cuteness is a sort of wonder that an amateur avian enthusiast will soak in
(vii) Beautiful sibia
when it’s time I take take a much-needed break from the dazzling dyes to immerse my vision instead in much subtler sublime hues is a new dream to see an avian beauty’s craned-neck-curiosity and its composed colours arousing squalls of wonder in the pit of my gut

Fun fact: Outside the breeding season, the grey-crowned finch can form flocks with other birds, including snow buntings and horned larks, that can reach sizes of up to 1,000 individuals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the gray-crowned rosy finch is a small passerine bird found through alaska, canada, and the northwestern united states. these birds are rarely seen, as they prefer habitat rarely accessed by humans; they are almost entirely found in tundra & elevated mountain environments. it is believed they may breed at a higher elevation than any other north american bird. they are seed eaters, with a preference for thistle. females are more drab in coloration than adult males, and resemble the juveniles of the species.
