Read below or on Ao3
~
The dusty purple curtain of evening settles over the sandstone roofs of Ba Sing Se. From their balcony in the Earth Kingdom palace, the night hums at a placid, noiseless distance. Aang used to dread this yearly week of pacifying nobles and politicians. By the eighth annual summit, after the dam broke and the Firelord now shared his bed, that—along with almost everything else—changed.
By now, the frenzied, diplomatic commotion of the annual Four Nation Summit has become somewhat of a predictable routine. But this year, even in the quiet of the usual sanctuary of their shared chambers at the end of an exhausting day, something ticks uncomfortably behind Aang’s dark grey eyes as they trace the golden alleys, glittering with life, slashing across the night in Ba Sing Se.
Channeling his seismic sense, he notices a stammering hitch in Zuko’s breathing as he enters silently through the heavy stone doors and bends flames alive to light the torches lining the room. Without turning to see whatever practiced, placated expression he wears on his face, Aang can feel there is more than broken moonlight hanging between them.
“You were excellent today, your highness,” he offers over his shoulder with his arms crossed and back still to Zuko. Amusement that usually soothes somehow prickles Zuko uncomfortably.
“As were you, Avatar Aang,” his hot breath and scarred hands closing around him—joining him to watch the distant vibrance humming below the palace in the dark. The severe set in Aang’s shoulder stiffens at Zuko’s touch.
In the last two years of their new relationship, it’s been Aang who finds a stoic and cold Zuko alone in their chambers and works to pry him open, offering his love as a tether to rescue him from the depths of himself. Tonight is different. Zuko tries to remind himself what Aang would say in these moments.
“You seemed distant today. Is everything—are you...” his voice trails off into the deep blue of the night, intertwining with the static buzzing between them.
A steadying breath rakes through Aang as his eyes shift sidelong to take in Zuko’s knit brow. “Yes. I mean, no. It’s... complicated.” his voice shakes in the way it does when he’s pretending that he isn’t about to cry.
“Aang, talk to me.” Zuko’s softness washes over Aang as he steps around him to look up into his eyes. Lavendar moonlight smoothes the exasperated lines of Aang’s face. His palms find Aang’s cheeks—thumbing away the moisture beginning to sting the corner of his eyes.
“I don't know what I can say, Zuko,” his head shaking gently into Zuko’s touch, a gentle sob shuttering his shoulders as his grey meets Zuko's’ gold. “I don’t want to hurt you, but I-,” another shake in his frame lurches him forward and deeper into Zuko’s touch.
“Aang,” there’s a sternness in his gilded eyes, filtering through his whisper, “I love you. I’m here. I can take it, whatever it is.”
“Being here in the Earth Kingdom palace, with you, now,” there’s a hitch in his breath, his words taste strange in his mouth, he’s not sure the rest is worth saying. But he wanted to try, "I was dead, Zuko.”
The truth and darkness of his words slam down over them like a slab of concrete. Every point of contact between their bodies feels like it's frozen, but somehow—burning.
“I hated you so much,” he manages between the gasping, sobbing breaths that are coming now. He slams a fist against Zuko’s chest, but he doesn’t flinch. He just nods, tears forming in his eyes.
“I hated you, Zuko, I hated you,” his cries choke him as Zuko wraps his arms around him, holding him through every wave.
They remain this way for moments that stretch on into minutes. Whispering I’m sorry and I love you like the words to a hauntingly familiar song. Two lovers, alight with the tortured work of forgiveness in the dead of night.
When they pull apart, this time it’s Aang's hands that find Zuko’s jaw and pull his tear-stained face up to his. His eyes taking in the pained set of Zuko’s brow before crushing their lips together—moving his mouth against Zuko’s in a wild, desperate erraticism.
“Aang,” Zuko pants through the thick haze of desire overwhelming him as Aang’s fingers rake through his hair and he feels his hands prying open his robes, “I’m sorry,” his breathing growing heavier with every frantic kiss. “I’m so sorry” The sound of his moans mingling with shame slows the motion in Aang’s body. He pulls his face away, the sight of Zuko’s untied robes, his bright pink lips, and disheveled topknot stabbing him with remorse.
“I- sorry, I shouldn’t have,” his stormy eyes, purple and flush with need in the moonlight, fall towards the ground as his hands slump down to Zuko’s waist.
“It’s okay, Aang,” his fingers finding Aang's, "I’m the one who should be... sorry,” he looks down at their bodies still pressed together. Sorry feels pointless. Sorry will never be enough.
“You've been apologizing for ten years. When will I just,” a breath he didn’t know he was holding puffs through his lips impatiently, “...get over it?” he sounded exhausted.
“No one’s asking you to get over it, Aang,” the silence stretches on between them, but it’s not uncomfortable. Zuko fills his lungs with the evening air before saying, “I’m not asking you to get over it,” their eyes meet again in the anguished purple of the darkness, something sanguine and unspoken settling over them.
Before he can say anything else, Zuko pulls Aang into his arms, wrapping one hand around the back of his neck and curling his head into his chest. His lips rest on the blue of Aang’s arrow, breathing in the sweet sandalwood of his skin like a healing tonic.
And there, in the dusty indigo of the night, for what feels like the millionth time, he prays a prayer of thanksgiving to Agni that the man in his arms is still breathing. And that after everything, he’s still his. ~ This is my first @flashfictionfridayofficial submission, and I had SO much fun writing it. Shoutout to @theavatarandthefirelord for being my inspiration to write fff and to write more Zukaang in general. Generally leaning way more into angsty as hell and messy as hell Zukaang - hope ya'll enjoy!

Wait you build ships on the regular? Do you have any videos helping with the design process, I always want to build ships but can't ever seem to make it work.
I literally just finished planning the next one I'll build in an upcoming video!! And I've been wanting to do a tutorial on tall ships in minecraft for ages now, but every time I try to get that explained, I'm hit with this awful wave of imposter syndrome. The ship builders in minecraft spaces are really talented and a lot of them build bigger and prettier than I do, so it feels like my own skills are kinda inadequate.
By the same logic I had plans to make a video on color theory in minecraft for ages, but I don't have much in the way of education so it feels wrong to just be there telling people stuff from the position of authority. I guess I could always do a block-by-block tutorial, but I like the ones that explain broader ideas and principles instead, actually teaching stuff rather than fostering a reliance. Both have their place, I'm just far more entertained by the other kind.
In the meantime, I guess my advice would be "check out blueprints of ships you like, decide on the layout you're going for before you start, but don't be afraid to deviate as long as it looks right to you". There is a certain logic to the anatomy of a vessel but you really can't beat just stuff that looks nice. Also be confident about bringing in materials that seem counter-intuitive into the build. Concrete and colored clay for accents? sure. Sandstone stairs and slabs for windows? Sign me up! My latest one had basalt for saiils. It's a nice gloomy grey, looks awesome ^_^

Stellar Acclimation—Chapter 6: The Door
The cave Scout finds herself in is surprisingly chilly and humid for being just underneath a desert. The wind continues to whistle overhead, but down here the air is mostly still. Scout illuminates the cave more than the flashlight mode of her mini Manipulator does—once she remembers which switch activates that mode and gets it to work—but she quickly finds that it’s not without its uses as she wanders further in. The flashlight’s aimed beam glitters off ores in the wall, attracting her attention each time. And there’s a lot of ores.
Coal she finds quickly enough near the surface—might be useful for something. Iron is plentiful. Further down the winding cave, silver glitters as if basking in the light for the first time.
Scout quickly loses track of how far she’s going in. Each glitter of ore attracts her and draws her curiosity forward almost as much as the draw of that energy on her subconscious.
Soon enough gold stars glittering at her like tiny suns sticking out of the sandstone. Pretty. Also might be useful for something. She has no clue what she’s going to use all this ore for—maybe Bronzemarch will have a furnace or something available. But she collects it regardless. Clearly no one else has ever been this far down.
She finds a vein of gold lacing the sandstone beneath her feet at one point. Automatically she fires her Manipulator’s dematerializing beam at it, but as the shining chunks and flecks disappear from the stone, so does the stone. In cracks. Scout barely has time to flinch from the sharp crack before the ground gives way.
She yelps a sharp crackle as she falls. Then smacks the floor of another cave. “Ow…” she fizzles as the impact sends shockwaves of feedback through her brand and still-tender side. Her fizzle gives way to a low drone as she gathers energy to try and sit back up. Every movement hurts for a bit so it takes longer than she would like.
But eventually she realizes she’s not the only source of droning in the cave. Or light.
The cave she’s fallen into is a bigger cavern. Behind her, the ground slopes downwards and the cavern narrows into a few tunnels. But in front of her, the ground slopes up and the cavern ceiling arches overhead. And under the crest of the roof is a door.
“What the heck…?” Scout mutters as she stands up, her voice and footsteps echoing off the sandstone.
The air becomes even colder as she approaches the door, and the pull of that mysterious energy becomes stronger. The door itself is much taller than her—a stark change from the squat doorways in town—and is framed by dusty grey stone. Clearly not a local stone, either: it’s too grey and too nigh-metallic in sheen. Yet each brick and each indentation of the engraved design is absolutely covered in ages worth of dust and sand. The door is topped by an arch, in which is a stylized emblem of some sort of sun, engraved into the stone and filled with a faintly glowing, deep blue light. And the top of the door proper is engraved with…some sort of squiggly pattern?
No, letters. That’s writing.
And the strangest sort of familiarity niggles at her. She’s almost positive the writing says “test.”
And amnesiac or not, she could swear she’s never seen that writing before. Right?
With ginger steps, Scout approaches the level slab of ground the door rests upon. She starts to muse aloud, “Now what’s a door like this doin’ out…here…”
Only to drift off when the door senses her presence.
The ambient energy pulses in a way that makes Scout’s plasma pulse with it. And as it does, the three stone slabs forming the door slide apart, the slab with the writing sliding up into the arch and the two other slabs sliding into the stone frame. Normal physics says those two slabs should be sticking out of the frame or something, but no. They just impossibly disappear into the frame.
And past the threshold is gaping space. But not the local stars Scout’s seen overhead at night. They’re closer to the stars she sees in her dreams. A space beyond this existence.
And it’s just sitting there, waiting for her to walk in.
Scout hesitates. Curiosity begs her to go through, to see why this energy feels familiar yet not. But first she has to check around.
No creatures crawling in the dark, she verifies. And nothing behind the door. Literally—the front of the door remains open, a hole into space, but the back of the door turns it into just a random archway in the middle of nowhere. There’s no actual door, nor is there a stone wall where she would expect one to be. There’s just the stone frame and the engraved star in the slab in the arch. But the door and its portal to stars are still there, waiting for her when she walks back around to the front.
The heck?
After several short eternities of staring into the twinkling ethereal stars, the unnatural drone from the energy the only noise in the cave, Scout shrugs to herself. No harm in peeking, right?
Scout steps through the door and finds herself in a large stone chamber. It’s cold and sterile but majestic, like an arctic cathedral entrance hall. All the stone around her is the same impossibly old brick, carved by unknown hands that knew how to preserve it against time. A pattern of swirls snakes through many of the bricks, echoing the pattern gracing the two huge pillars standing on either side of the door.
Which she realizes is on a dais in the middle of the chamber. As before, the door is just…standing there. But this time it’s standing there as if it’s meant to rest there in the open, with the two pillars on the lower step of the dais standing as guardians. The obelisk-like pillars face away from the door, shining a warm light outwards into the rest of the chamber. But they’re not the only light in the chamber.
Scout shines her own light, of course, but there’s also a faint yet vibrant blue light strip tracing the edges of each of the dais’ steps. And there’s the diffuse shine of starlight from above. But the stars that shine through the three triangular, glassless windows overhead aren’t the same stars as the ones over Haven Valley. They’re not quite the same stars as in her dreams, either, Scout realizes after staring up at them for several moments. But they’re mighty close.
Soon a flash of blue light bursts from further down the corridor. With it a gust of colder air blows through the chamber. Scout warms agains the chill, ignoring the dull ache it sends through her side, and follows her curiosity to the light’s source.
There’s a large hallway extending from the northward wall of the entrance chamber—not quite as tall as the chamber, but still huge, as if this place was made for beings taller than Scout. She almost steps across the threshold into the hallway, absently staring at the arching ceiling.
Only to be cut off by a downward blast of glowing, freezing gas.
Scout yelps a sharp whistle and scrambles back, arm flailing. But with no left arm to balance the flailing of her right, she throws herself off balance and tumbles onto her butt. So then she scoots away from the pulse of gas. Until it stops just over a second later.
She just sits there, fizzing and trying to process what in tarnation just happened. But as she sits, she sees more blasts of that freezing gas shoot down in walls from the ceiling further down the hallway. One after the other like a series of gates. There’s a bigger chamber at the end, she realizes, but the rhythm of the gas blasts means there’s always one between her and the far end of the hallway, obstructing her view.
“Ok, ok…there’s a pattern here, ain’t there,” Scout mutters to the stars as she stands back up, the buzzing frequencies of her voice echoing off the nearby walls. She shakes her feet, readying herself as she studies the pulses of gas. “Just gotta time it right…”
The first blast of gas goes off. And as soon as it stops, she runs.
The first few blasters she passes with no problems. The next few are closer calls. One after the other, either she’s slowing down or the blasters are speeding up or she’s plumb not fast enough. Keep going, keep going.
Almost there…
Soon enough she can catch glimpses of the chamber at the end of the hallway in between clouds of gas. Its almost identical to the entry chamber, if a bit dimmer.
Almost there…
Right under the last gas blaster, a rogue tile’s edge catches Scout’s boot. She trips but momentum and her own flailing arm keep her from completely falling onto her face.
But it does slow her down enough for the gas to pulse. It blasts her foot and glances her back and sends a shock of feedback and aching cold through her plasma and reverberating through her brand. She shudders. The world around her slows down until she can will her plasma to warm against the ice that wants to crystallize along her shirt and bandages.
For several moments even the twinkling starlight through the geometric windows is bright as lightbulbs. Scout stumbles, limping until the leather of her boot unfreezes and her foot regains any sensations past numb feedback from a too-cold shell. But she still makes it past the threshold.
The chamber that receives her, although of similar size to the entrance chamber, is only lit by the starlight and by Scout’s own glow. There is no dais lined with blue light strips, but there is still another one of those doors. The funny symbols engraved into the arch atop the door reads “exit.” Helpful.
But before she steps up to the door, she’s distracted by a nearby chest. It’s made from the same stone as the rest of this otherworldly complex—impossibly ancient, but still as sturdy as it would be if it was brand-new. There’s deep blue strips of some sort of material lining the short edges of the lid, with a similar strip just under the indent Scout’s hand finds to pry the chest open. It’s heavy, but she eventually manages to push it open.
There isn’t much inside the chest, to her surprise. A small pile of funny-looking crystals in the corner that her Manipulator converts to Pixels when she scans them. A weird stone disk of sorts in the other corner with what looks like loose circuitry parts flaking off it’s surface; might be useful somehow. And a small dagger roughly in the center as if it had been tossed in last minute before the chest was closed for the ages. Scout pockets her Manipulator to gingerly pick up the dagger.
It has a surprisingly little amount of heft to it for its size; its blade is only barely longer than her handspan, but it has the weight of a blade two thirds that size. Yet the blade itself looks like it should be made of a dense metal, and the handle looks like cloth-wrapped stone. The dagger looks newly made, or at least newly sharpened, but when Scout holds it nearer to her face to get a better look, the same energy that the whole chamber radiates sings from the blade through her brand. Like the silent song of the stars, echoing through the core of her brand and ringing in its cracks. She can’t quite tell if it hurts or not.
Scout hardly realizes her feet wandering in the door’s direction as she studies the blade, but the burst of warm, dry air that spills out when the door opens at her presence pulls her attention away from the dagger. Suddenly she wonders how long she’s been in this place.
Might be a good idea to head back.
So after tucking the new dagger into her other pants pocket, she steps through the door.
