i just saw a tiktok that was basically just saying how melissa is definitely a gretchen type character to shauna. now i need all of yellowjackets casted as mean girls. i think for s3 shauna is definitely regina but i love her still and melissa is gretchen (we disregard the most recent events because it doesn’t work as well but actually i think it does so oh well) and then i saw someone saying that gen is karen which YES. i think nat is kinda the obvious choice for janis and coach scott being fed up with the girls is such a principle duvall thing to do. another option for janis and damien is tai and van because i think that could work.. anyways please help me with my vision

a problem I'm having with how I've structured my media consumption this year is that I keep being like "laura palmer is a gretchen archetype" and making myself mad about it

I love laura palmer. let me say that from the jump. love love love this messy dead teenager who is not the perfect victim her community wanted her to be but who is depicted with dignity and grace regardless and for whom the narrative wants you to know, continuously, that she deserved better. I love that!

but also the thing I'm saying in calling her a gretchen archetype is that I think both lynch and goethe get kind of hung up on the idea that the world is cruel to girls who act out inappropriately under duress and that they don't deserve that cruelty to the point where like....they kinda don't seem to consider that there's any other possibilities?

I'm gonna abandon my faustian framing device here because twin peaks is definitively Not A Faust. but like every single woman in twin peaks, both the original and the return, who finds herself experiencing abuse or exploitation ends up in a cycle that ends up defining the entire rest of her life, and maybe even her after/next life depending on how you want to interpret stuff in the return, with like the one possible exception of shelly.

it's tragic that these girls and women get sucked into nightmare spirals of despair that lead to them self-destructing and lashing out at people around them but there does not appear to be any way for they themselves to jump ship or course correct, and even with outside help from a man the situation doesn't seem to really be fixable.

idk. it's a real bummer especially because I like so much of the rest of it!

the one I'm most bummed about is my girl audrey...she's set up so clearly as a parallel to laura and she even says she sees them as the same situation. what happened to laura was a tragedy but through audrey we see the potential to avoid it but then the back half of season 2 happens and also the extended fart noise that is audrey's presence in the return and it's so sad to me. I thought we were doing something here
