So, the first album I’m gonna be talking about might just be my favorite album of 2017 thus far. Big Big Train have been around since the early 90s, but have really come into their own in recent years. Starting with 2009′s The Underfall Yard, they’ve been a welcome addition to the modern progressive rock scene. I didn’t hear about them until last year, where I saw their 2016 album Folklore, which I’ll get to one of these days, being mentioned in a list of the years best albums. Folklore certainly was one of the greatest albums of 2016, and Big Big Train set up a lot of expectations for their next release. So, imagine my surprise to find out that not even a year after Folklore, they had announced a new album, called Grimspound. Before sitting down to listen to it, I was wary. Could they have given this album the time and care that went into Folklore in under a year? Would this be a disappointment, a rushed record that failed to capitalize on the innovation and talent displayed on their last release? Once i’d finished, the answer was a definite ‘No.’ Grimspound is one of Big Big Train’s most fully realized albums to date and shows just what the group can accomplish, giving everyone a spot in the limelight and sees them all on top form. David Longdon’s vocals flow effortlessly with the music, Greg Spawton’s lyrics are poignant and well-crafted, Rachel Hall’s violin is tender and moving, Dave Gregory’s and Andy Poole’s guitars alternate between restrained and bombastic, Danny Masters’ keyboards and bass compliment and enhance the mood. Nick d’Virgilio’s drums add power and strength where needed and Rikard Sjoblom’s backing tracks never cease to conjure up emotion. I’ll get into a song by song analysis later, but for now, I am confident in calling Grimspound the best album of 2017 thus far, and it will take a lot of talent and skill for anyone else to dethrone it anytime soon.
