today years old when i found out greens and labor ever had a coalition. my greenslide queensland voter ass could NOT comprehend

Oh bestie, to start I want to say sorry for your recent election :( I have a lot of friends up there who, while they acknowledge it could have been worse, are devastated by the results. Sending you guys all the love in the world.

But yeah, I think the ACT is very unique in that situation because in many ways, we are a Labor stronghold (by the time this election cycle is done, Labor will have been in for 27 years state wise here), but given preferential voting and being generally more left leaning, The Greens often hold a decent number of seats (before this election they held over 1/5 of them and even now it's just under that) and it's not uncommon here that a winning party does not get a majority government plus being rare for us to have any non Green/Labor/Liberal members, so those factors mixing together just makes a Labor/Greens coalition the easiest choice in most cases.

Either way, I said, while I do have my concerns, I am excited to see what not having the coalition changes and hope it leads to a lot of positive change!

Yeah, sure! Fair warning though, this will be biased and quick. I'm a Greens volunteer (unpaid because I want to maintain political integrity and work for a party exclusively because I agree with them) and generally support them, save a few things, so this will be from the perspective of someone who feels that way.*

The party (technically two parties, but they form a coalition) previously in power lost. They're called the LibNats and Eye Do Not Like Them.

And the Other Party, called the Labor party, won! I'm generally in favour of the Labor policies except for their lack of interest in generating sustainable jobs for those in the dying coal industry (especially since they're meant to be the party of the working class, I don't see why they'd want to keep pumping money into jobs that will inevitably be phased out within their lifetimes. The workers in the coal and gas industry deserve financial support to live in dignity for as many years as needed to acquire new skills and find different employment).

what's most important to me is what is being dubbed the "Greenslide". The Greens historically have only had one seat in the House of Representatives, and now they have up to four (three confirmed, one likely)! Moreover, they have 12 in the Senate. And just as cool, many other "teal independents" (party-less politicians funded by Climate 200) have won 10 seats collectively. This is massive in ways I can't describe.

^^ But I will try to; it breaks the hegemony of the two party system. For reasons that take too long to explain, the Australian voting system has always allowed for people to vote for whoever they want while still signalling to counters "if this guy doesn't get enough to get in, just give my vote to this one of the two manor parties". However, this is the first time it's been put into practice so broadly. This signals a huge shift in the dynamics of Australian politics for the next generation or so, probably until people stop caring about the climate.

moreover, this puts Greens, independents, and other minor parties (such as Jacqui Lambie's Cool Kids Club or Bob Katter's Cool Kids Club) into the "balance of power". I.e. if Labor wants to pass any bills, they're going to need the support of these minor politicians to do it. As such, bills can be amended if they put the climate in jeopardy or even axed. Moreover, in exchange for their support, these minor politicians may "exchange" for Labor support on THEIR bills. For example, Greens has a pretty massive "tax the billionaires bill" they really really want to pass. If they can negotiate with Labor, it could happen, albeit likely with some softening amendments (assuming that's what Labor agrees to do - we will see).
