Dewy and luminous, Eau de Jane from my friend Jane Daly. A bit of freshness is my favourite kind of smell, unless I’m in the mood for something different, depending on the weather and whatever else is going on, but floral freshness is definitely one of my favourites. Eau de Jane gives me all of this. I dipped into my warm wintery fragrances too early, and needed respite, so it gives me that. I can see myself wearing it lots in the spring and summer too because it’s so fresh but not a fresh citrus. It’s kind of a spritzer because it has sparking qualities. Light and easy with lots of green but none of the sharpness of some other chypres. An opening of violet and galbanum, rose blended with carnations, and ylang ylang, eventually a woodsy smooth dry down. Easy to wear from beginning to end. It's a green silk bouquet, fresh and clean, no thorns, drops of water splashed on white tile. Have you ever worn or felt this little bomb of freshness? What do you think ? Un jardin sur le Toit created in 2011 by Jean Claude Ellena for Hermès. I am absolutely a fan of this perfume. I do not know why it gives me so much pleasure every time I put it under the nose ... Its green notes, fresh and floral are for me a real life-giving happiness. Add to that a good behavior in time (which is quite rare for this typology of perfume) and you make it an ideal perfume for long days of summer. In any case I adopted it because I feel good with it. Smell like a plant (with a touch of dirt):  green perfumes. 

In high school I read Lucky Magazine religiously. Pulling the sticky tabs and putting them on every good outfit, purse, shoe. I sat my mom down to review each issue, much to her dismay--how could her daughter be so obsessed with shopping?--paging through and telling her what I wanted...subtle.   

They had a killer staff, chock-full of good taste. Jean Godfrey-June was one of the best: she penned a hilarious and personal column about beauty (now she’s head-beauty-honcho at Goop). She wrote a piece in praise of Marc Jacobs’ Ivy Body Splash. Her description...something about the way it smelled like ivy crawling up a brick building...piqued my curiosity, and I remembered the rave a year or so later when I saw the perfume at Sephora at the Stanford mall. I sprayed it on my wrists and after a few hours knew I had to have the bottle. Even better that it was limited edition and the only one left at that store! #veryrare #notreally 

Greatness followed: I was 19, but had a signature scent, and therefore adulthood. Friends smelled it and thought of me. Both women and men loved it. #veryrare #actually

After Ivy, I dallied with other scents, but none held my heart. “smell marc jacobs ivy” I feverishly typed into Google. As usual, the internet unveiled millions of weirdos typing away about the same thing. I was looking for a green perfume.

The thing about greens--they actually smell like plants. Usually also like dirt. But also, like, fantastic. It’s hard to describe why this is so appealing, like asking why cinnamon buns taste good. It’s neuroscience! 

9 years later, and I’ve spritzed more than a few greens. Tip #1: Good greens--whether perfumes or lacinto kale--do not come cheap. Get thee to a parfumerie! I met the true (scent) love of my life at the San Francisco Barneys: Jonathan is the 3-star sommelier of perfume. Plus he put in his time at Nars so can hook a girl up with her foundation shade. He introduced me to both Amazinggreen and Posh on the Green. 

Very very honorable mention to Diptyque’s Eau de Lierre, which smells like ivy leaves and roots, but has no staying power. Constant splashing is your only option.

Comme des Garcons Amazinggreen. I should have known, given the name, but this one is brilliant. Smells so good on me, the bottle is perfection...even the box is a dark, almost black green color. 

Atkinsons Posh on the Green: Smells like how i imagine grass under the first rays of morning sun in a London park would smell--in heaven.
