Dear Vector Prime,
What became of Megaligator after he came into possession of the Creation Matrix? Was it ever retrieved by Megatron and the rest of the Green Order?
Dear Vernal Venturer,
I believe I gave you a very truncated version of events before, that Megalligator reconciled with Megatron to become the joint Green Compassionate Convoys, but I suppose I never told you the full story.
After once again evading the judgmental fist of his brother Convobat, Megalligator continued on his quest to kill all Megatrons. The silent Golden Ager Soundwave had taken him to the Green Planet for a reason, and soon it became clear. They found a great pyramid, its Bulkhead guards having long since abandoned the Green Temple in grief over the loss of their commander, Green Tender Convoy. All save one: a large BotBot (large by BotBot standards, about as tall as Megalligator), who introduced himself as Bulk Gulp.
Bulk Gulp showed deference to Soundwave, but initially was wary of Megalligator, butting heads with him almost immediately—each considered the other’s alt-form useless! What’s more, Bulk Gulp darkly noted, Megalligator reminded him of “the new guy”.
Under duress, Bulk Gulp would lead the two visitors up the pyramid. Translating from Soundwave’s total silence, he explained that the weapon Megalligator needed for his quest was contained in the temple, and they would need to get it from its protector. Heartened by his plans finally moving along, Megalligator’s confidence quickly turned to dismay as he found none other than a Megatron- no, the Megatron, hunched in a corner, contemplating the Green Matrix enshrined at the top of the pyramid. Megatron could only note that he wasn’t able to get the Green Matrix to open before Megalligator lunged at him, raining blows upon his face.
Megalligator shouted what he had always known: that he and his brothers were clones, and while Convobat had been born “good”, the clone “son” of a Convoy, Megalligator had been born “evil”, forged from samples the Straxus twins had stolen from Megatron Omega. Megatron said nothing, realizing that his millennia of ambition had left him alone in an unfriendly past, separate from his dearest friend. Bulk Gulp and Soundwave watched in despair. Soundwave had never been good at communication or interpersonal relationships, and his bringing the two green warriors together had only brought further misery. The Green Order had fled the temple not just in grief, but in disappointment that a former tyrant was to be their new leader.
It was at this moment that Sideways attacked the temple, the space biker having been hired by the Straxuses to track and destroy Megalligator. Sideways handily took on both him and Megatron, cruelly declaring that no matter what anybody said, they’d both always be monsters. Then, a voice called out from the Green Matrix. To be a Green Warrior was to defend nature and nature was not something to be defined by others, but by understanding both our roots and the skies our branches reached for. It was here that Megalligator understood his true power: to super-robot lifeforms, his techokinesis was control over life itself. Using the same connection to his progenitor that connected Convobat to Blue Big Convoy, Megalligator synced his Spark to Megatron’s, suffusing him with life energy and giving him the strength he needed to defeat Sideways with a Mega Fusion Buster drill attack.
From the Creation Matrix came a vision of Green Tender Convoy. He explained that neither Megatron or Megalligator were suited to be his successor. Megatron was a being of half-life, an irradiated Spark piloting the unliving body of an abomination created by his past self. Megalligator was a being of death, an assassin overflowing with energy, whose only goal was the death of his foes to prove his life. But half-life and living for death are both forms of life, and their duality would allow them to surpass Green Tender Convoy as joint commanders: Green Compassionate Convoys. With his blessing, both took hold of the Green Matrix, and lit the beacon at the top of the pyramid.
Soundwave could only smile. His was not a perfect plan, but he would see Primus saved. As he took a triumphant swig from Bulk Gulp, he knew that His will had been passed down.

Chapter 6: Found you.
Philza doesn't see the unexpected obstruction in the middle of the road until it's almost too late. The problem is he's far too engrossed in lecturing his younger proteges after one of them so boldly insulted his longtime companion and friend sat beside him. See the youngling seems to be plagued with diarrhea of the mouth. Philza sits behind the wheel of his rumbling winnebago, relentlessly chewing the ears off of Tommy, who is currently slumped in his seat, struggling to actually pay attention to what the older man is saying.
"May I remind you, if it hadn't been for Techno, this convoy woul-"
"LOOK OUT!" The angular masked man, deck out in leather and denim sits up with a start, eyes wide and fixed on something he sees through the massive windshield. Philza jerks the wheel and stands on the breaks. The contents of the RV shift. Water bottles, canned, goods and other heavy items tumble off the shelves and cubbies, a few crash onto the tops of Tubbo and Tommy's heads, eliciting a colorful string of curses. Both men slam forward as the trailer skids to a sudden halt. Philza and Techno flop back into their seats blinking, breathless, in the side mirror they see the long line of vehicles- pickup trucks, RVs, four-wheelers and even a few sedans- forming a chain reaction of lurching skids, every member of the caravan screeching to a stop, one by one in a billowing cloud of carbon monoxide.
“What in the hell is that?” he sucks in a breath, still gripping the steering wheel as he tries to focus on the figures standing blithely in their path less than twenty yards ahead of them.
One of them is a tall, Caucasian man, dressed in a tattered green pullover with the hood pull up and over an unsettling white mask- the only marking on it being a very minimal smiley face ‘:)’. In front of him stands a much shorter woman in an equally ragged black sweatshirt and jeans. She has one of her muddy boots propped up on the front fender of a fancy Cadillac SUV- the big black kind often used by shady government types- which is currently parked and idling in the middle of the road. The strangest part of this tableau is that the woman is smiling. Even from this distance, she aims her ultra bright grin at the convoy’s lead vehicle as though preparing to sell some new line of kitchen knives.Techno goes for his .38, which is stuffed down his boot.
“Easy Techno, easy…” Philza takes another deep breath, waving the weapon off. He’s a man approaching his early thirties, Philza wears a well worn graphic-t the design too mottled by age to be recognizable. His face marked with the faintest signs of age, his pouchy eyes radiate a certain kindness. “This seem like a group of the living, no sign yet that they aren’t friendly. Just keep your eyes peeled.”
Techno shoves the short barrel pistol under his belt.”you stay here Phil, I’ll go-”
Philza puts his hand up “No, no… Techno I’ll go. You tell the others to keep their cool and tell them to stay inside their vehicles.” The younger man reaches for his two-way radio as the older man climbs out of the cab.
Over the thirty seconds- the amount of time it takes him to struggle down the running board steps, and scuffle across twenty feet of pavement- a chemical reaction occurs. Unseen, subtle, undetectable to anyone other that the three coming to face each other in the middle of the asphalt two lane. It bubbles up within Philza unexpectedly and as powerfully as an electrical charge passing through him. Instantly he dislikes the large fellow looming behind her.
“Morning sir.” The woman occupying the road says with a gleam of neighborly congeniality in her eyes. Philza can see two others behind the tinted glass of the Escalade- Two young men sat in the back seat, their moods and demeanors are unknown. Their hands hidden, their spines rigid, muscles tightly coiled.
“Hello there…” he calls back, faking a smile. He can feel the eyes and ears of his people on the back of his neck. They need fresh souls and strong backs to help with the maintenance, fuel runs and heavy lifting involved in keep the caravan going. At the same time they must be careful. A few bad apples have passed through the group in recent months and have threatened Its very existence. “Something we can help you with?” He inquires.
The thousand kilowatt smile brightens as she adjusts the hem of her sleeves, almost as if she were readying for a sales meeting. “Didn’t want to sneak up on you back there.” She sniffs and covertly follows Philza’s gaze to the ever looming figure behind her. “You never know who you’re going to run into out here in the wilds of biter country. Your group here seem to have it down to a science, traveling in that little cavalcade of yours, always moving… Safety in numbers - it’s genius really.”
“Thank you.” He keeps his artificial smile plastered on to his face.
“That’s quite a vehicle you got there…”
“Thank you.”
“Is that a Cadillac?”
“Yessir, two thousand and seven, still runs like a top.”
“Looks like it’s been in some rough scrapes.”
“That it has..”
Philza nods pensively “What can we do for you? You seem like a woman-“ his eyes flit to the man behind her once more. “Who’s got something on her mind.”
“Names Y/n, just a fellow survivor trying to get by, avoid the unsavory types, the four us have had our full of it.”
“Uh-huh.” He scratches his chin. He knows what's coming and doesn't like it one bit. It doesn't feel right. “ what can we help you with? We’ve got some extra petrol if that’s something you’re interested in… if not we’ve got some bottled water on hand?”
She pours on the charm. “That's kind of you. These are difficult times. The biters out here are often the least of our problems, you have to be real careful. I wouldn't expect you to just take in any old stray you find along the road.” Her expression softens, her eyes filling with sadness and humility. “ Sir, we are good, hardworking people who need a place of refuge if not only for a short time, we need medical treatment, food and the safety of fellowship. It never occurred to us that solace might be found and a moving target like the one you've got here.”
The daylight has dawned enough now for Philza to clearly see the young men hunkered in the Escalade, obviously injured, nervously waiting. he swallows and licks dry chapped lips. “I'm going to have to ask if the two in the Caddy could maybe go ahead and show their hands.” She turns and gives them a nod, one by one the people in the SUV hold up their hands, revealing that they are unarmed.
Phil nods. “I appreciate that. Now may I ask the number and type of weapons you might be carrying?”
She grins. “It’s not much. Got a couple of nines and a shotgun. Big man’s got a snubby. Not much left over in the way of ammo, I’m afraid.”
He nods again and starts to say, “Fair enough, now if I might ask you to-”
Out of nowhere, a number of unexpected noises and quick movements in his peripheral vision interrupts his spiel and makes him flinch as if a bomb has just gone off. A figure from behind him approaches at a dead run, arms pumping excitedly, voice caterwauling-
“HOLY SHIT!! CHRIST, IT’S HER, I TOLD THEM IT WAS HER- I JUST KNEW IT-!!” The young protégé, dressed clad in red and white comes charging toward Y/n, Big man jerks back, reaching for his weapon taken completely by surprise.
“It’s okay! He’s one of ours!” Philza calls out shooting his hands up in a conciliatory gesture. “It’s alright, he’s harmless!” Y/n has her face suddenly aglow with emotion, eyes wet as she spots the kid, seeing the grey scarf still tightly knotted around his belt. She opens her arms.
“I fucking knew it!” The young man plunges into her arms. He so much taller than she remembers, that fact makes her heart ache. “I was worried you might’ve been dead.” He murmurs, his face pressed into the crook of her neck. The woman hugs him back, stroking his head with maternal tenderness. The young man begins to softly weep.
Y/n shushes him, murmuring soothing words. “I’m not dead yet… still that ‘cranky-old ass bitch’ you met in that hole.”
The young man now sobs into her neck. “I missed you… I tried coming back for you, but I was afraid… by the time I got help, you were already gone… I just.. I just didn’t think…”
She shushes him again “Now that’s enough of that, I told you not to bother looking back now didn’t I?” Her hand move to rub circles over his back. Nick pokes his head out the window with a furtive look. “What’s the deal..? Are we staying with these people or what.” Philza looks over at the two still embracing and smiles.
“looks like you’re already apart of the family.”

Life is Dream: A Rosegarden story
Chapter 1- Once Upon A Time
Ruby’s eyes watered as the crisp air breezed in front of her face as she fell.
She had watched as her two teammates swooped down the void, only to be swallowed by a golden glimmer. By then, time had slowed down, and she thought about what could happen. Only to be eclipsed by the thought of her sister alone, wherever she might have ended up, waiting for her.
The battle had been arduous, and she had had a hard time tracking down her friends’ whereabouts during most of it, but when it had all quieted down, when Nora had placed a hand on her shoulder with a million questions in her blue eyes, the roar of the answer thumped in her ears.
Penny had understood right there and then, hugging her friends one by one- ‘do what you have to do.’
Jaune nodded gravely, thinking that if he were in their position, he’d do anything to bring his teammates back. ‘We’ll take it from here on out.’
There was no guidance, no certainty of what could happen, of what laid beyond the darkness. But Blake was trembling, her grasp on Gambol Shroud whitening her knuckles. Weiss held on Blake, afraid she might jump alone.
The decision had been made.
A tingling sensation distracted her thoughts, and with a rueful wonder she realized golden shimmers began to dance on her skin.
‘This is it, then.’ She barely had the ability to think before lighting gold consumed her. She felt herself fall asleep and tiredly closed her eyes.
Oscar opened his eyes at the insistence of Emerald. She had probably been trying to shake him awake for a while now judging by the tender expression she tried to conceal with fake annoyance.
Sitting up on his bed, he noticed that the quarters he shared with the rest of his team was empty.
The sunlight streamed harshly through the willowing blinds, telling him that it was way too late to be sleeping.
“Should have woken you up earlier but you nearly fell asleep on your dinner last night, so we thought it would be better to let you sleep in a bit more.” She explained as she slid open her Scroll, checking the itinerary for the day.
Mind still heavy with sleep, Oscar placed his bare feet on the cold floor. The frigid clay under his soles roused him enough so he began mentally preparing for the day.
“What have we got today on the agenda?”
Emerald rolled her eyes and thrusted a paper bag into the teen’s hands.
“Breakfast rolls with honey. Seriously Oscar, you barely ate last night and now you’re insisting on intermittent fasting? This is why even Little Red’s taller than you!” She jeered at his sudden bouts of sleepiness over the past month.
Oscar smiled, pained. Everyone up until now had been walking on eggshells regarding team RWBY, hushing down when they mentioned them, fearing guilt and sadness. But Emerald, who in her pragmatism did what had to be done, and said what needed to be said, did not care too much about being gentle with expectations.
It was weird. A month had passed since the exodus from Mantle and Atlas, and the remaining members of team JNPR were crestfallen, yet tried to ignore the growing negativity stemming in their hearts. They treated Oscar with care, trying to ignore the four missing links in their lives.
Surprisingly, Emerald and Penny were the only ones keeping hope.
Penny was hopeful and reverent. She had been made of alloy, bolts and dolts. But now she wore shoes, sand was annoying, and she could taste food. Anything was possible in this wide world of theirs.
For Emerald, it was more about seeing impossible feats of ancient wonder, something in her ears whispering that there were more incredible feats of magic to be revealed in her time alive. She felt that third chances in life were rare, and thus, grasped at its stray hairs strongly.
So they stuck by Oscar as the task of repatriation began at dawn and ended at dusk.
It had been a grueling month at Vacuo, nobody was happy to have the Atlesians in their land. The citizens of Mantle fared better, they had been humbled when they huddled close together back at the crater in the Motherland. But the Atlas elite? They could not wait for Mistrali ships to come in hoards to get them to colder ground. They revolted, nothing was up to their elevated standards.
But Theodore was nothing but pragmatic, as all Vacuans were, and a night off in the deserts shut the bunch of them up. The ones who made it back that is.
“Alright, I’ll stuff my face with honeyed bread rolls and spiced tea if it makes you happy.” Conceded Oscar after he tied up his boots and threw on the airy cotton cape on his shoulders. He had decided on a lighter fabric for his stay in Vacuo, the gauzy green tunic emboldened with red and white trimmings, and his loose cotton pants were good enough for the mighty sun that beat on the roofs of the deserts.
Emerald smiled despite herself. She and Penny had taken on the big sister role whenever Nora wasn’t there to mother Oscar to hell and back. It had taken some time to get used to, but for anyone that was not privy to the Fall of Beacon, Emerald was just Oscar’s older sister, who emerged at the Fall of Atlas.
Over the course of the weeks she proved herself, as a true Vacuan, and as a true ally.
“C´mon then. There’s a bunch of convoy ships from Argus and Vale willing to take in some snooty idiots in exchange of supplies. Don’t make Nora wait for you more, she’s missed on her hugging quota for the morning.” With a pat on his head, Emerald walked Oscar to the door, and off they were.
The day blurred by Oscar’s eyes, now and again stifling an inconvenient yawn, but nevertheless, persisted during the course of his workday.
Every day there were less Atlesians to send off, and less Mantle citizens who wanted to leave. Like May tended to say, Mantle knows how to show their teeth.
The migratory system they had built recorded every single citizen that wanted to leave or stay under Theodore’s watchful eye. The controls were harsh since there was no way to know if Neopolitan had blended into the crowd at all. Given that Emerald told Theodore and every staff member in Shade that they were to expect Tyrian and Mercury sooner rather than later, security had been the top priority these days.
In between tending to the wounded and sick, delivering supply packets to the tents of refugees, and breaking up fights, Oscar was beat by dusk.
By that time, Theodore insisted Oscar to keep their sparring sessions until he felt that Oscar moved and fought with more fluidity than the day before.
“Squirt,” Theodore would say, “I know Oz has taught you some things, but he was a dandy and thought that battle was graceful matter.” The rippled headmaster would flex and show him how merciless battle was.
Under the strongman’s tutelage, Oscar’s body ached and grew. With Ozpin’s mentoring in his head, his magic grew and he felt something inside of his soul bubble to the surface.
But at the end of the day, when Jaune was sitting right by his side, and Nora was babbling a ten miles per second into his hearing canal, he felt his shoulders drop their tension. He shot a thankful glance at Ren, who was casually conversing with Emerald, but still kept an eye on the youngest of their group. Penny and Nora, two ginger parakeets with insurmountable force and joy lulled his thoughts, until he sagged forward and faceplanted in his tomato soup.
The resounding splash alerted Jaune who quickly pulled Oscar’s face from the cold soup by grabbing him by the collar of his tunic. Oscar’s lack of reaction, and his fluttering eyelids greeted the blond huntsman, flooding him with worry.
The chatter died.
Nora leaned the boy to her side and grabbed his tanned cheeks, wet with stock, and panicked at his quivering eyelids.
Semi-conscious as he were, Oscar saw the motions at the table like photographs forming a standstill gallery inside his mind, the sounds dull and his feeling numb.
Nora and Emerald crowding over him, worried expressions marring his face.
Penny and her cold hands framing his cheeks, her confused expression.
Jaune’s golden aura around his vision as it tunneled.
Lastly, Theodore’s frown before he closed his eyes and tumbled into sleep.
__________________________________________
Ruby tumbled out of bed confused.
Her heartbeat alert and scared, her eyes darted to the four walls surrounding her. Sweet and spices reached her nose, the colourful walls held handmade tapestries and idyllic paintings. The rug that had cushioned her fall was fluffy, and the blanket tangling in her legs felt like a familiar hug.
“Where am I?”
Ruby struggled to stand up, and once she did, she gasped at herself.
In front of her, a mirror held her image. But it was all wrong. She wore a frilly white dress, with white stockings, red lace and ribbons, and her hair was tied in two tiny pigtails. She looked adorable.
And she hated it.
“Where’s-“ she looked at the nearest wardrove, and opened its doors as fast as she could. Rifling through the cutesy dresses, she was taken aback by a familiar skirt.
Holding the black dress with the black combat skirt, she wondered how her Beacon outfit appeared in the room she was in.
She stopped dead on her tracks.
“I’m not in Atlas anymore, am I?”
Clutching the dress to her chest, she slid down to the carpeted floor. She felt a bubble of panic come over her as she remembered the last events of her life.
“Right, Neo struck Yang, and Yang… She fell. We fought Cinder. And she died. I think. Then we…jumped.”
Ruby looked her hands over, turning them this way and that, as if they were given to change at any moment now.
“And-“ Ruby wheezed, close to hyperventilation. She trembled as she remembered flashes of the fight against Cinder, how Blake evolved her Semblance and fought as three copies of herself, about Neo striking the wrong Blake, and being fallen by the original one. Cinder taunting how she used Jinn, revealing their plans. Penny fell to the golden plateau, and then in a fit of rage, silver.
No more Cinder. Probably.
Her heart running like a wild animal under her chest, she took deep breaths as she tried to calm down. She rubbed the black fabric between her thumb and pointer finger, the texture was light to the touch. In the bottom frill, she found her name embroidered by her own hand. It was supposed to be comforting, but it only fueled her confusion.
A few tears threatened to spill, but then several knocks on the door startled her.
“Darling! Breakfast is ready!” a familiar voice called out to her outside the door.
In a haze, Ruby stood up and let the dress fall from her hands. She marched to the door and opened it in a swift motion, scaring the poor woman in front of it.
“Little Red! What sort of behaviour is this!?” An old woman that looked and sounded like María Calavera chided her, hands on her hips as she glowered annoyed at the teen.
“María! It’s you!” Elated, Ruby swooped in to hug the woman, who patted her back confusedly.
“Oh dear, now you’re calling your grandma by her first name too! Did you hit your head when you woke up this morning? What’s wrong with you?” Not-María held Ruby at arms length, checking her head for any injuries.
“Huh?”
Not-quite-María tutted, before guiding Ruby by the hand to the kitchen area of the cottage they seemed to be in.
“Little Red, you seldom ever visit me, and now you’re calling me by my name! Your mother hasn’t been disciplining you as she should!”
More confused than ever, Ruby sat on the stool offered by Not-Really-María.
The old woman sighed before plopping a plate of sausages, beans with crema and tortillas in front of her.
“Repeat after me, Little Red: Abuela María. Ah..Boo-Eh-Lah. Abuela.” Ruby looked at Abuela María in mild shock.
“Abuela?”
The Abuela María nodded satisfied and patted her hand.
“Now, after we finish mending that cape of yours, please give this basket of goodies to your mother for me. Oh! And thank her for the nice fabrics she sent with you, will you?”
Still starstruck, Ruby stared at Abuela María, not yet understanding anything that was happening in front of her.
“My…mother?”
Abuela María nodded, quite exasperatedly at her not-quite-granddaughter. She flipped her gray-haired braid over her shoulder and began repairing the red cape as she mumbled about ‘youth these days’.
“Yes, dear. Summer Rose. My daughter, your mother.”
More confused than anything, Ruby brought her hand up and mercilessly slapped her cheek. Abuela María looked at Ruby curiously, halting her sewing for a moment before resuming.
“But-but!” Ruby stuttered, holding her stinging cheek under her palm. “We don’t look anything alike!”
“My dear!” began Abuela María. “Silver eyes run in our family! Look!”
Abuela María removed her thick rimmed glasses and pointed at her eyes.
But all Ruby could see was a puckered red bruise, swollen and hurt. It slashed from her right temple to her left, there was not much to be said about eyes, as there were none.
Feeling not quite in a dream, but more in a bizarre nightmare, she stood up, the wooden stool clattering behind her.
Abuela María, with her glasses still removed and acting normally, bit off the last thread on the eye of her needle and folded the red cape neatly, offering it to Ruby.
Smiling sweetly, but with her disturbing red scarring across her visage, she gifted Ruby a basket filled with fruits, cheeses and breads, and pushed her through the cabin’s threshold.
Ruby looked petrified at the old lady that looked like her mentor but was nothing like her.
“Take this basket to your mother, will you? Be careful of the Big Bad Wolf, don’t let it bite you!”
Laughing merrily, the old woman closed the door on Ruby, leaving her alone in the cabin’s porch.
Jarred and perturbed, Ruby walked away from the cabin thoughtlessly, and into the winding roads that crossed the forest.
Only once she reached a small ravine, did she sit on the forest floor and pushed to her face the cape that smelled like home, like Yang and Qrow and Weiss and Blake and everyone she knew, did she weep.
For the longest time she cried, but after a while she felt her tears dry up, her shoulders stopped their heaving, and her heart dulled to a somber beat.
Ruby wiped her tears with the cape and splashed her face with the cool water from the ravine. She looked at her reflection, and disliking the pigtails pulling the hair at her nape, she tugged at the elastics and ruffled her hair. She bunched the skirt in her fists.
Annoyed at her dress, she looked down to it expecting to see white ruffles on white lace, she was caught off guard when she found herself wearing a black version of the dress she had woken up into.
As much as she marveled at this feat of reality writing itself, she feared it.
Taking one last look at her reflection, and tugging on the hood on her cape, she trudged into the deep forest, following the map she was given and hoped for the best.

Unsteady Barry x Reader
Warning: so blood, war, guns, cursing, panic attack if any of this will trigger you then I suggest not reading.
Part 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I griped the edges of the sink and stared into the mirror that was clouded from the steam, the bathroom was warm still from the from the bathroom heater and the hot shower I just took. I splashed my face with water and when I looked back up I wasn't looking at the mirror anymore. I was sitting in the gunners hatch of the Humvee on our route clearance mission. "Hey Y/L/n" I heard my Sergeants voice over the roar of the engine, "yes sar'nt" I ducked down into the humvee to hear him better. "Anderson's sick from chow last night and want to trade and take his dismount mission with the guys?" I looked at Anderson then back at my NCO and nodded. I slid my harness off and switched spots with Anderson, and began reading the mission brief notes he had taking. For the dismount mission we were going to be walking 2 miles ahead of the convoy clearing with handheld mine detectors. We were looking out for both command wires and IEDs, I was going to me walking behind Roger's who was going to be walking with the PSS-14 mine detector.
The humvee slowly stopped and I opened my door doing my 5-10-15making sure there was nothing on the ground before getting out. I walked to the truck behind me and placing my hand on Roger's shoulder. He smiled and we all got in formation, the walk was slow as we cleared out was towards the village. Roger stopped abruptly and I turned my head "all stop" I whispered to Mendez who was behind me, he repeated it down the line and I walked closer to Roger. "What's up?" He looked at me nervously, "listen" I took the ear piece from him and he moved the mine detector forward. It pinged something and I nodded "ok... mark it and go around... dude relax we trained for this." I patted his shoulder and gave him space he took a few minutes to mark the mine and make a path around it. Mendez radioed up what was going on and we moved on.
We were about 100 yards from the village when Roger called an all stop again and began marking. I walked closer to make sure he was ok and thats when I heard the pop. Seconds later Roger's head drops back and he falls down, I felt a burning in my arm but I ignored it. "CONTACT 12" I yelled and everyone dropped, I started shooting back towards the building and a man fell from the roof followed by a rifle. I crawled up to Roger and and grabbed his IOTV pulling his lifeless body up. I threw him on my shoulder to fireman carry him and I called out to Mendez. Mendez ran up crabbing the PSS-14 and we ran back towards the Vehicles. We put Roger's in the medics vehicle as to protocol and got back inside the trucks to head back to base.
"Fuck fuck fuck fuck FUCK!" I punch the side of the humvee and screamed Mendez put his hand on my shoulder. "Theres nothing you could've done" I turned and squeezed now tender hand and began pacing. "He was just a kid Mendez.... I was supposed to be pulling security but I wasnt. I could've seen the sniper before he took the shot." I pulled my gloves off and threw then down. Mendez grabbed my shoulders then cringed letting me go "Y/L/n hey go shower and change....your covered in blood." I wince and grabbed my arm. The adrenaline had subsided and the pain was becoming more prevalent. I walked into the bay and pulled off my gear letting it fall to the ground, Mendez helped me slide my OCP top off leaving me in my green under shirt.
"Shit I'll get a medic." Mendez took off and I sighed sitting on the bench, the bullet had gone through Roger and lodged itself in my bicep. Moments later Kinley our medic came running up with Mendez on her heels. I lifted my sleeve out of the way so she could see it better and she sighed. "Theres no exit wound so the bullet is still in there I need you to come to the medic bay" I nodded and grabbed my too following Kinley.
~~~~
I tugged my sleeve down over the scar on my bicep and grabbed my bag, Dr. Dressa had sighed me up for an acting class to try and socialize me more and help me acclimate to civilian life. I walked drove to the building and sighed getting out of my car. As I was waking up to a building there was a blonde telling off some guy who looked clueless. "I was gonna ask if this is the acting class but considering the drama I'm guessing it is." I said chuckling as I walked up next to the man. He looked at me and nodded "you new?" I shrugged "yep don't necessarily want to be here though" I followed him inside and he furrowed his brows "then why are you here" I sat on one of the chairs and leaned back.
"My Doctor thinks it will help me come back to the real world." He nodded "what branch were you in?" I looked at him surprised he knew what I ment "uh Army... I was a Combat Engineer" he nods and looks at me with a half smile "I was in the Marines." I smiled "Ever deploy?" I asked looking down at my hands. "Yup did you?" He looked at me and I nodded "yuuuup.I'm Y/n by the way..." He stood up and put his hand on my shoulder "Barry... and uh you'll like the class" I looked up at him and faked a smile. "Thanks" he walked away and I stood up looking around. Mr. Cousineau walked in and looked at me "who are you?" I grabbed a paper from my bag and walked up to him "uh hi... I'm Y/n Doctor Dressa signed me up she said she emailed you and uh heres a written form from her." He took the paper and nodded pointing to the chairs.
He started talking about the Macbeth play they were going to preform, I wasnt paying attention when someone kicked my chair. I blinked a few times and looked at Gene who was staring at me, "ok I'll as again. Doctor Dressa told me she had you prepare a monologue. You have to perform one to get into my class." I stood up and pulled my sleeve down subconsciously. "Uh yeah I'm thought the last speech from uh Blackhawk Down." I he nodded and pointed to the stage, I nodded walking forward. "There's still men out there...... Goddam!... when I go home and people ask me 'hey hoot. Why do ya do it man? Why? You some kind of war junkie?' I won't say a goddam word. Why? They wont understand. They wont understand why we do it. They wont understand it's about the men next to you. And that's it, that's all it is"
I blinked and the image of Roger falling to the ground flashed in my head, I tried to push it back but it was to late. I stood there in horror at my ears started ringing and I was back in Afghanistan, the truck had hit an IED and it damaged the driver side of the vehicle. I was gunner on the mission since I refused to go dismounted again after Roger died, something hit my leg and I screamed in pain. I ducked into the humvee and looked at the driver who was leaned forward on the steering wheel bleeding. Then a gun shot and the body was falling off the roof and I was lifting Roger to carry him back.
I started breathing heavily as my PTSD hit me like a car speeding towards a brick wall. I started shaking, I looked for an escape and ran into the dressing room. I started pacing and repeatedly ran my hands through my hair, I heard footsteps but I ignored them. "Hey you ok" I recognized Barry's voice but it was foggy as the voice of Roger played through my mind. "You alright" he asked again. "He was a fucking kid" I stopped infront of the wall clenching my fists and squeezing my eyes shut. "When we get back home I'm gonna purpose to my girl" his voice echoed in my head and I punched the wall. "He was a kid.." I put my back to the wall and slid down "a fucking kid" I hid my face in my knees and cried, I felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked up from my knees and seen Barry sitting infront of me "I could've saved him I could stopped the sniper.... I should've done my job" he gulped and looked down. He chewed his lip and I sighed, "sorry." He looked up and shook his head "don't be its perfectly fine to have PTSD from deployment." I nodded.
"I haven't had an attack like this since the day I got back to the states..." I hugged my knees resting my chin on them. "Want to talk about it?" I looked at him and shook my head "not really" he nodded and stood up holding out his hand, I took his hand standing up "how about we go get some drinks instead" I smiled at him and nodded "yeah I'm down" I wiped my eyes and walked out to my car Barry walked next to me with his hands in his pockets. "You wanna ride with me or uh want me to follow you?" I asked pulling my keys out of my pocket, "I uh I can ride with you if you dont mind" I smiled and unlocked the car and we both got in.
We didnt talk on the way to the bar but I could tell there was something burdening him. The way he sat staring out the side window with his hands on his lap, palms flush against his thighs. When we arrived at the bar we ordered a round of shots and a beer, he got up to go to the restroom leaving his phone on the bar next to me. I took a drink of my beer and looked at his phone as it lit up and started buzzing. Noho Hank.... weird name... I thought about answering the phone for him but before I had the chance to give it a second thought he came up behind me grabbing his phone. He sighed loudly and put the phone to his ear walking away from me.
When he came back he plopped down on the chair and taking a drink of his beer, "everything ok?" I looked over at him "yeah I'm fine just work stuff" he mumbled almost inaudible. I nodded and ordered two more shots, "here cheers to the military we, the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have now done so much for so long with so little, we are now capable of doing anything with nothing." We clinked glasses then brought them back down tapping the bar before taking the shot.
He pulled out a 50 and payed our tab, which I thanked him for repeatedly. We walked outside and the cold air hit me causing a shiver to run through my body. I fished my keys out of my pocket and quickly got into the car, Barry sat down in the passenger seat and buckled up. "Hey you wanna get breakfast tomorrow?" He looked at me and I smiled "yeah... I'd love to" he smiled and nodded. "Here put your number in my phone and I can text you my address" I handed him my phone as I drove back to the theater to take him to his car.
I parked my car behind his and turned to him "thanks for hanging out with me. It may not seem like it but I had a lot of fun." He nodded as I spoke and unbuckled his seatbelt. "Yeah me too. I'll uh... I'll see you tomorrow morning."
Hamlet Mariofied: Act 1 Scene 3
Bolded names refer to the Mario characters playing the roles. The character role names remain unchanged in the context of the play and its dialogue.
Kamek = Polonius
Larry = Laertes
Wendy = Ophelia
Act I, Scene 3
Elsinore. A room in the house of Kamek.
Enter Larry and Wendy. Cue the first few seconds of the Super Mario Bros 3 boss music, then change to Space Junk Galaxy before Larry begins speaking.
Larry. My necessaries are embark'd. Farewell.
And, sister, as the winds give benefit
And convoy is assistant, do not sleep,
But let me hear from you.
 Wendy. Do you doubt that?
Larry. For Hamlet, and the trifling of his favour,
Hold it a fashion, and a toy in blood;
A violet in the youth of primy nature,
Forward, not permanent- sweet, not lasting;
 The perfume and suppliance of a minute;
No more.
Wendy. No more but so?
Larry. Think it no more.
For nature crescent does not grow alone
 In thews and bulk; but as this temple waxes,
The inward service of the mind and soul
Grows wide withal. Perhaps he loves you now,
And now no soil nor cautel doth besmirch
The virtue of his will; but you must fear,
His greatness weigh'd, his will is not his own;
For he himself is subject to his birth.
He may not, as unvalued persons do,
Carve for himself, for on his choice depends
The safety and health of this whole state,
 And therefore must his choice be circumscrib'd
Unto the voice and yielding of that body
Whereof he is the head. Then if he says he loves you,
It fits your wisdom so far to believe it
As he in his particular act and place
 May give his saying deed; which is no further
Than the main voice of Denmark goes withal.
Then weigh what loss your honour may sustain
If with too credent ear you list his songs,
Or lose your heart, or your chaste treasure open
 To his unmast'red importunity.
Fear it, Ophelia, fear it, my dear sister,
And keep you in the rear of your affection,
Out of the shot and danger of desire.
The chariest maid is prodigal enough
 If she unmask her beauty to the moon.
Virtue itself scopes not calumnious strokes.
The canker galls the infants of the spring
Too oft before their buttons be disclos'd,
And in the morn and liquid dew of youth
Contagious blastments are most imminent.
Be wary then; best safety lies in fear.
Youth to itself rebels, though none else near.
Wendy. I shall th' effect of this good lesson keep
As watchman to my heart. But, good my brother,
 Do not as some ungracious pastors do,
Show me the steep and thorny way to heaven,
Whiles, like a puff'd and reckless libertine,
Himself the primrose path of dalliance treads
And recks not his own rede.
 Larry. O, fear me not!
[Enter Kamek.] Play Kamek’s Theme from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
I stay too long. But here my father comes.
A double blessing is a double grace;
Occasion smiles upon a second leave.
 Kamek. Yet here, Laertes? Aboard, aboard, for shame!
The wind sits in the shoulder of your sail,
And you are stay'd for. There- my blessing with thee!
And these few precepts in thy memory
Look thou character. Give thy thoughts no tongue,
 Nor any unproportion'd thought his act.
Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar:
Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried,
Grapple them unto thy soul with hoops of steel;
But do not dull thy palm with entertainment
 Of each new-hatch'd, unfledg'd comrade. Beware
Of entrance to a quarrel; but being in,
Bear't that th' opposed may beware of thee.
Give every man thine ear, but few thy voice;
Take each man's censure, but reserve thy judgment.
 Costly thy habit as thy purse can buy,
But not express'd in fancy; rich, not gaudy;
For the apparel oft proclaims the man,
And they in France of the best rank and station
Are most select and generous, chief in that.
 Neither a borrower nor a lender be;
For loan oft loses both itself and friend,
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.
This above all- to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
 Thou canst not then be false to any man.
Farewell. My blessing season this in thee!
Larry. Most humbly do I take my leave, my lord.
Kamek. The time invites you. Go, your servants tend.
Larry. Farewell, Ophelia, and remember well
 What I have said to you.
Wendy. 'Tis in my memory lock'd,
And you yourself shall keep the key of it.
Larry. Farewell. Exit. Begin playing the tune to Lost Kingdom.
Kamek. What is't, Ophelia, he hath said to you?
 Wendy. So please you, something touching the Lord Hamlet.
Kamek. Marry, well bethought!
'Tis told me he hath very oft of late
Given private time to you, and you yourself
Have of your audience been most free and bounteous.
 If it be so- as so 'tis put on me,
And that in way of caution- I must tell you
You do not understand yourself so clearly
As it behooves my daughter and your honour.
What is between you? Give me up the truth.
 Wendy. He hath, my lord, of late made many tenders
Of his affection to me.
Kamek. Affection? Pooh! You speak like a green girl,
Unsifted in such perilous circumstance.
Do you believe his tenders, as you call them?
 Wendy. I do not know, my lord, what I should think,
Kamek. Marry, I will teach you! Think yourself a baby
That you have ta'en these tenders for true pay,
Which are not sterling. Tender yourself more dearly,
Or (not to crack the wind of the poor phrase,
 Running it thus) you'll tender me a fool.
Wendy. My lord, he hath importun'd me with love
In honourable fashion.
Kamek. Ay, fashion you may call it. Go to, go to!
Wendy. And hath given countenance to his speech, my lord,
 With almost all the holy vows of heaven.
Kamek. Ay, springes to catch woodcocks! I do know,
When the blood burns, how prodigal the soul
Lends the tongue vows. These blazes, daughter,
Giving more light than heat, extinct in both
 Even in their promise, as it is a-making,
You must not take for fire. From this time
Be something scanter of your maiden presence.
Set your entreatments at a higher rate
Than a command to parley. For Lord Hamlet,
 Believe so much in him, that he is young,
And with a larger tether may he walk
Than may be given you. In few, Ophelia,
Do not believe his vows; for they are brokers,
Not of that dye which their investments show,
 But mere implorators of unholy suits,
Breathing like sanctified and pious bawds,
The better to beguile. This is for all:
I would not, in plain terms, from this time forth
Have you so slander any moment leisure
 As to give words or talk with the Lord Hamlet.
Look to't, I charge you. Come your ways.
Wendy. I shall obey, my lord.
Exeunt.
Fuel-Cell Pushboat to Run on Hydrogen Made With Hydroelectric Power
Using river power in river boats proves the value of Hydrogen fuel-cells in creating clean waterborne operations. The EU funded FLAGSHIPS project is supporting the construction of a hydrogen fuel powered barge push boat in the French city of Lyon, one that will get its clean hydrogen form the Rhone’s hydroelectric power in a truly virtuous circle.
Expertise from several European countries is working together to create one of the most visible and demonstratable commercial hydrogen-fuel cell marine solutions in South France.
The Rhone is more than just one of Europe’s great rivers flowing from the glaciers of Switzerland to the French coastline. It is also one of France’s major trade arteries and a significant source of renewable electricity for the country.
On this 276km stretch between the port of Marseille and Lyon (these cities represent two of the three biggest cities in France) 11 hydroelectric power stations generate clean electricity off the river’s natural power.
There is also a regular convoy of barges being pushed up and down the river between these two great cities - imported cargo upstream and cargo for export downstream. When these barges reach Lyon they are dropped off, and the river tugs pick up another and head off south to the coast.
It is the operations in Lyon where these barges get moved between convoy positions and loading cranes that a unique new hydrogen fuel-cell powered push-boat will operate soon.
FLAGSHIPS leading the way
The EU funded FLAGSHIPS project has two main parts to it. One is the creation of the hydrogen fuel cell and power system for a Norwegian public ferry service, the other is for this powerful push boat that will operate in Lyon shuttling empty and loaded barges from the loading cranes to the standby area and other highly visible roles in the French city.
The tug design is for two 200 kW fuel cells – the Norwegian ferry will have three of the same – connected to a mobile compressed-hydrogen fuel tank. This fuel tank can be removed and refilled with green hydrogen which will be created at an electrolysis plant using power from the Rhône hydroelectric dams.
Victor Laravoire, Newbuilding Project Manager at transport group Sogestran, which owns subsidiary Compagnie Fluviale De Transport, a member of the FLAGSHIPS project and future owner of the hydrogen push boat. He points to the virtuous circle of this project. “The great river’s water flow will create the energy, which will create the hydrogen which then is used on a barge on the river. On the barge the water formed in the fuel cell reaction to create power is then returned to the river as the bi-product from the fuel cell”.
The push-boat design will be for a mobile fuel tank with a 300kg compressed hydrogen capacity, enough to power the pusher tug for two weeks says Laravoire. When it is empty it will be replaced by a second tank, and the first one taken by road to the refilling station located just beside the dock area to be refilled with compressed hydrogen.
As this pusher-tug will operate in the city centre of Lyon – one of its other proposed roles will be for the municipal authorities dealing with special garbage barges on the city’s riverside – safety has to be a priority.
“We are working closely with the French administration and with class as there are no rules on how to put hydrogen on these vessels” says Laravoire. “We want to be sure we do not miss anything. We are helping build the next set of safety rules for the use of hydrogen-powered fuel cells.”
With the design of the push tug quite well advanced, CFT has tenders out for a yard to build the vessel and have delivery in mid 2021.
FLAGSHIPS is a €6.8m project under the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking and funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 framework programme.
FCH-JU is a public Private partnership supporting research, technological development and demonstration activities in Europe. It aims to accelerate the market introduction of these technologies and realise their potential in achieving a clean energy system. The three members of the FCH-JU are the European Commission, Hydrogen Europe and Hydrogen Europe Research.
Participating companies in the FLAGSHIPS project include nine European partners, with two ship owners Norled (NO) and CFT (FR), the maritime OEM ABB, supplier of power and automation solutions Westcon Power & Automation (NO) and naval architect company LMG Marin (NO & FR).
World-leading fuel cell technology is provided by Ballard Europe (DK) and vessel energy monitoring and management by PersEE (FR). Management, dissemination activities and hydrogen safety expertise are provided by VTT (FI) and industry cluster NCE Maritime CleanTech (NO).
Dear Vector Prime, whatever happened to ConvoBat and Megalligator who were created by the two Straxuses?
Dear Convobat Conversational,
Megalligator's journey was a cold one. Soundwave had inherited his holy Father's quiet disposition, and on a number of occasions he failed to communicate the graveness of his mission. Assuming he was being taken to begin his crusade against all Megatrons, Megalligator was shocked to find himself face to face with Burning Red Sentinel Prime and the final Megatron himself. Megalligator found his body reacted to Megatron's presence, releasing the Green Matrix from within his veins.
You see, the Straxuses had gathered quite the collection of artefacts during the Angolmois Battles, including the all-creating Green Matrix. The Matrix' limitless creation powers had been drained by the Straxuses to form a battery for their new rebellious assassin, granting him power over machine life. Red Sentinel insisted Megalligator hand over the Matrix to Megatron, but Megalligator stole it away, enraged that he had been reduced to a pawn in the life of his genetic source. It was only the timely manifestation of Green Tender Convoy that brought an end to the conflict. Tender explained that Megatron had been chosen as his successor, but the weight of his sins as Emperor of Destruction prevented him from taking the Green mantle alone. This was where Megalligator came in. As a Primitive, beloved of Primus, Megalligator was to act as shieldbearer and conscience to Megatron, always pushing him towards defense of nature and the common man. Megalligator buckled under this decree, but came to some acceptance after seeing Megatron risk his life for him when Straxus' servant Sideways attacked. The villainous space biker was driven off, and the pair were jointly dubbed the Green Compassionate Commanders.
Meanwhile, Convobat joined Magna Convoy as they scoured their quiet and chaotic universe for survivors of the Primus Vanguard. They found Jhiaxus in her laboratory, having completed the formula necessary to manifest the Matrix Gauntlet, her lover Yellow Splendid Convoy dubbing her the Yellow Dazzling Commander before passing on to Primal Valhalla. Deadlock found them, having meditated on the hiss of the Black Legendisc and realised his potential as Black Brilliant Commander. This act of sheer personal assertion called forth his opposite to balance the universe, a minor candidate at White Gallant Convoy's Glacier Academy: Drift, the White Bold Commander.
This party made their way to the Purple Planet, having been told that their final test awaited them. There they found Purple Wicked Convoy, quite alone. Without Primus, his Shockwave council had mostly found themselves preoccupied with their own experiments. Wicked played the madman, insisting that he was intent on deciding whether Magna Convoy or Convobat was to become his successor: Purple Heinous Convoy.
This was in truth another of Wicked's ill-timed jokes. Confronted with two bots the spitting image of his dear brother-in-arms, he wished to test who deserved to take the Blue mantle. Magna Convoy won out: Convobat could not help but find himself tempted by a future separate from the shadow of his genetic father. Wicked assured him to take heart: Blue Big Convoy had always asserted that the world was larger than Convoys or Primes, and Convobat had proven himself as beyond the cycle of Primal succession.
When Convobat and Megalligator finally met, it was as equals: as Convoy and Convobat. Though they had one final clash, the only ones who had anything to fear were the Straxus Corps. For they were the defenders of the universe: the Primus Vanguard.
Laena, the Halfling Mystic
This is a backstory I wrote for a character in an upcoming Dungeons and Dragons campaign. It’s in the Unearthed Arcana setting, which is essentially the Wild West of D&D. In this world, new technology has enabled folks to drill passage through an insurmountable mountain range and explore the untouched wilds on the Other Side.
Laena was orphaned at a young age. Her mother and father perished in a fire that destroyed several city blocks. She, at the tender age of three, was carried to safety by her elder brother, Pereldon. For a very short time they wandered the streets, attempting to survive in he chaotic aftermath of the fire. Soon, however, they were picked up by the city guards.
Pereldon was given to the charge of their second cousins once removed, Adelaide and Cadal. They did not take Laena, though. Adelaide and Cadal already had five of their own children to feed, and at least at the age of nine, Pereldon could be some help on the family farm. So it was that Laena was given to the care of the church. The priests and acolytes there took care of her for several years. They fed her, clothed her, and taught her. It was with the church that Laena learned to read and write. The priests quickly noted her aptitude for learning. Their suspicions about her intellect were confirmed one day when they discovered her in their vast library. Laena had found every book in Halfling -- which she had only begun to speak before her parents died -- and was teaching herself the language anew. The elders of the church discussed the matter, and by Laena's 6th birthday had decided to send her to their sister Monastery, high among the peaks of the impassable mountain range. For two weeks, she and a small convoy of priests and acolytes traversed the treacherous mountain paths to reach the hidden monastery. When they finally arrived, Laena was delighted to find a haven among the clouds. The monastery was beautiful. There were green courtyards, wildlife was abundant, and the mountains were peaceful. But above all, Laena discovered a place for herself in the world. The order of priests at this monastery were focused on developing the mind, and they set Laena to all manner of challenging tasks. She finally learned Halfling, then learned to speak Elvish and write in the Elvish script. She meditated, learned several forms of martial arts, and learned to cook and use herblore. She began to read about the wonders of magic and the arcane, but her tutors pushed her to expand her mind, not her magic. Best of all, she had unfettered access to the library at the monastery. Laena became good friends with the librarians and scholars there, even aiding them in their research at times. Her appetite for books and knowledge was insatiable. By the time she was 14 years old, Laena managed to unlock her first psionic talent. In a particularly grueling training session, as one of her masters psychically attacked her mind while she held up a barrier, Laena's mind suddenly pulsed, and it sent her master skittering back across the stone slabs of their training courtyard. Rather than the anger she'd expected, Laena was baffled to find that her masters were pleased with such an outburst. Her training took a turn from that day, and she spent more time learning to unlock her innate psionic prowess, and less time aiding the librarians with their research. Still, the call of knowledge beckoned her, and she spent many late nights amid the tomes of the monastery. When Laena turned 21 years of age, the masters decided that she needed to take a journey. For almost her entire life now, she had been secluded in the safe arms of the monastery's mountain sanctuary. But to truly master her psionic talents, Laena had to experience the rest of the world. They suggested that she could reconnect with her brother, or perhaps find employ among the halls of civilization down the mountain. Or, they suggested, she could even venture to the other side of the mountains. Even in the remote mountain monastery people had heard tell that, with modern technology, folks were now able to travel more freely from one side off the mountains to the other. But the other side -- the unknown side -- was wild and untamed. None yet knew it fully, and none yet knew what might be there. Laena left what had been her home for the past 15 years in thoughtful introspection. Where did she want to begin her journey? Where would her feet lead her?
Dear Vector Prime: what's your McDonald's order?
Dear Determined Drive-Thru,
I'm afraid I don't have one. The only fast-food chain I have visited is Jollibee, where my fellow Robot Blasters and I would fight for hydration: a free drink is the right of all sentient beings. At McDonald's, you will find Crispy Tender Convoy's Green Order, French Fry Convoy's Yellow Order, and Burning Hot Sauce Prime's Red Order, but I do not appear on the menu. Perhaps one day I will be part of the Chicken Selects Special Combo.
Fuel-Cell Pushboat to Run on Hydrogen Made With Hydroelectric Power
Using river power in river boats proves the value of Hydrogen fuel-cells in creating clean waterborne operations. The EU funded FLAGSHIPS project is supporting the construction of a hydrogen fuel powered barge push boat in the French city of Lyon, one that will get its clean hydrogen form the Rhone’s hydroelectric power in a truly virtuous circle.
Expertise from several European countries is working together to create one of the most visible and demonstratable commercial hydrogen-fuel cell marine solutions in South France.
The Rhone is more than just one of Europe’s great rivers flowing from the glaciers of Switzerland to the French coastline. It is also one of France’s major trade arteries and a significant source of renewable electricity for the country.
On this 276km stretch between the port of Marseille and Lyon (these cities represent two of the three biggest cities in France) 11 hydroelectric power stations generate clean electricity off the river’s natural power.
There is also a regular convoy of barges being pushed up and down the river between these two great cities - imported cargo upstream and cargo for export downstream. When these barges reach Lyon they are dropped off, and the river tugs pick up another and head off south to the coast.
It is the operations in Lyon where these barges get moved between convoy positions and loading cranes that a unique new hydrogen fuel-cell powered push-boat will operate soon.
FLAGSHIPS leading the way
The EU funded FLAGSHIPS project has two main parts to it. One is the creation of the hydrogen fuel cell and power system for a Norwegian public ferry service, the other is for this powerful push boat that will operate in Lyon shuttling empty and loaded barges from the loading cranes to the standby area and other highly visible roles in the French city.
The tug design is for two 200 kW fuel cells – the Norwegian ferry will have three of the same – connected to a mobile compressed-hydrogen fuel tank. This fuel tank can be removed and refilled with green hydrogen which will be created at an electrolysis plant using power from the Rhône hydroelectric dams.
Victor Laravoire, Newbuilding Project Manager at transport group Sogestran, which owns subsidiary Compagnie Fluviale De Transport, a member of the FLAGSHIPS project and future owner of the hydrogen push boat. He points to the virtuous circle of this project. “The great river’s water flow will create the energy, which will create the hydrogen which then is used on a barge on the river. On the barge the water formed in the fuel cell reaction to create power is then returned to the river as the bi-product from the fuel cell”.
The push-boat design will be for a mobile fuel tank with a 300kg compressed hydrogen capacity, enough to power the pusher tug for two weeks says Laravoire. When it is empty it will be replaced by a second tank, and the first one taken by road to the refilling station located just beside the dock area to be refilled with compressed hydrogen.
As this pusher-tug will operate in the city centre of Lyon – one of its other proposed roles will be for the municipal authorities dealing with special garbage barges on the city’s riverside – safety has to be a priority.
“We are working closely with the French administration and with class as there are no rules on how to put hydrogen on these vessels” says Laravoire. “We want to be sure we do not miss anything. We are helping build the next set of safety rules for the use of hydrogen-powered fuel cells.”
With the design of the push tug quite well advanced, CFT has tenders out for a yard to build the vessel and have delivery in mid 2021.
FLAGSHIPS is a €6.8m project under the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking and funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 framework programme.
FCH-JU is a public Private partnership supporting research, technological development and demonstration activities in Europe. It aims to accelerate the market introduction of these technologies and realise their potential in achieving a clean energy system. The three members of the FCH-JU are the European Commission, Hydrogen Europe and Hydrogen Europe Research.
Participating companies in the FLAGSHIPS project include nine European partners, with two ship owners Norled (NO) and CFT (FR), the maritime OEM ABB, supplier of power and automation solutions Westcon Power & Automation (NO) and naval architect company LMG Marin (NO & FR).
World-leading fuel cell technology is provided by Ballard Europe (DK) and vessel energy monitoring and management by PersEE (FR). Management, dissemination activities and hydrogen safety expertise are provided by VTT (FI) and industry cluster NCE Maritime CleanTech (NO).
