Geoff Andrew wrote of the film in Sight and Sound "The film is a brilliant exercise in meta-narrative, which raises questions galore about reality and representation, time and space, genre and gender, individual and urban identity, cinematic suture and casting. Mainly, though, it's just very, very funny."

The Green Fog (2017) is a very loose remake of Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo consisting of pre-existing films and tv shows filmed in San Francisco.

The project began while Guy Maddin was collecting footage of films shot in San Francisco. Only later did he tie them all together with a structure similar to Vertigo.
