Quiet of the Mind
a tiny 141 poly drabble— slightly price/gaz centric but not really.
***unedited***

It's rare that they're granted this kind of peace.
The sun's just beginning brush against the treeline, the gentle lapping of water against a rocky lakeshore mixing with the hum of cicadas and birdsong.
John's old blue truck— the same once he's had since his beard was no more than some scratchy stubble on his chin— was backed up near a dock, a bright red cooler filled with beer and other drinks and lunch meat sitting on the bed of it and the tailgate flipped down.
Up a wooden plank staircase, a fair-sized cedar cabin sat on structural stilts, not far from the water's edge. The boys had rented the thing for the entire 2 weeks, per John's suggestion.
"We're out in the bush all the time as soldiers," John said when he spoke of the trip. "Never get to really enjoy nature, too busy watching our arses out there."
So here they were. A quiet, private lake spanned out in front of them, surrounded by lush green forest and the only other civilization being the cabins on the far side, far enough that the early morning fog that settles over the crystalline waters completely hides the cabins from view.
Simon and Johnny stand on the cabin's deck above, Simon manning the grill while Johnny spears darts into a dartboard fixed on the side of the cabin. Below, Kyle rests, sitting on the open tailgate with a cold can of coke next to him and a maplewood guitar sitting in his lap, his fingers deftly plucking away at the strings. It's a lulling sound, soft dulcet chords vaguely reminiscent of western folk music. John leans against the tailgate beside him, eyes fixed on the far shoreline as he watches a small herd of deer travel through the grass towards the trees. He's quiet, his mind is quiet. For once.
"What song?" He mutters to Kyle as he glances over to him, only to find Kyle's warm eyes already locked onto him through his pretty eyelashes, head tilted with the way he holds his guitar.
Kyle shrugs slightly, continuing to strum. "Just wingin' it."
John smiles at him fondly, but says nothing more. Just turns back to the lake and listens. Even the sound of Johnny cursing at the dartboard and Simon griping at him for putting a dart-sized hole in the wood siding of the cabin can't interrupt his peace. If anything, it's a comforting sound.
There's several plates lined out on a foldable table next to the still-smoking grill— bratwursts, burger patties, hotdogs, grilled cob corn, potato wedges, macaroni courtesy of Johnny, who nursed the pot over the cabin's stove for 15 minutes and fished the ripped up box from the trash 3 different times because he kept forgetting how much milk, butter, and water to add. (Simon told him multiple times to just leave the bloody thing on the countertop until the mac was done.)
The sun's shining bright gold and orange through the gaps in the trees when Simon lets out a whistle signaling the barbecue's done, and Kyle slides his fingers down the strings, stopping the vibrations as he carefully sets his guitar back in his case behind the cooler. He dutifully fishes more beers from said cooler for the other 3 men, favoring another coke for himself. John's hand brushes over his affectionately as he takes the glass bottle with a soft murmur of "thank you, love."
They each carry their full plates back down the stairs and take their seats at the old picnic table at the bottom as the sky paints itself purple and pink, and John's unusually quiet. Content.
His eyes rest on each of his boys in turn as he eats, Johnny and Kyle bickering good-naturedly about the best time of day to go fishing while Simon glances between the two, subtly eggs them on with a quiet "the best time's midnight" and suddenly they've both turned on him, allies against a common enemy. Simon must feel John's gaze on him— he has a knack for that— because he glances up at just the right moment as Johnny and Kyle move on to their favorite fishing lures.
Simon's lips quirk into the smallest crooked grin, an equally fond look in his eyes as the two speak without words.
Price just takes a swig of his beer and pushes all other thoughts from his mind. Averts his eyes to the sky.
A pretty sunset, he thinks.

It's been a really long time since I've been here, life has just been too busy and tiring. I haven't even been able to draw I'm so sorry. Can I ask for two?
PC with a flu or high fever with Eden and Trauma induced Eden insisting on going out to work or sell products to earn money to pay Bailey given that they're already permitted by Eden to go back to town every now and then and that Eden didn't directly buy PC from Bailey. Take your time imma just be here sick in bed.
Hey! So sorry this took so long! I hope you're doing much better now. And don't worry about not having done art! We all work at our own paces, don't push yourself to create when you don't have the will to.
I think I've already covered PC with a sickness, and how Eden is a stern but attentive caretaker. We can see this when there's pass out events at the cabin. They bring you in, put you to bed. After the pred/prey scene they even get you water. So Eden would likely work as normal, but come in to check on you every so often. Get you a drink or a snack. If you're well enough, you can do small indoor chores. If not, sleep as much as is needed.
As for traumatised Eden at the market? Mmmm that good. That's a yummy one. Note: when I say that it's often about horrible things, isn't it? Double note: Lynx would be Axe body spray to the 'Muricans.
Oh - warning for mentions of past non-con btw.
There's too much noise. It burrows into his brain, denying any attempts to drown out the calls of purveyors of goods around him. Calling out their produce, prices, how long they'd be there.
There's a baby crying. Wailing as it's father talks on the phone and half-asses shushing it by waving a toy in its face while he isn't even looking at the babe.
There's so many smells he swears they're causing him a headache. Food. Sweat. Some abhorrent chemical smell as a group of teenage boys pass. He remembers Lynx. Remembers the locker rooms at school.
There's eyes everywhere. Blue, green, brown. He thought he saw red at one point. No- no he definitely did. There's a group of goths wandering around. Probably one of them with contact lenses. Eden could swear he feels at least one pair of eyes on him each and every second.
Scant few customers come to his stall. Its mostly older patrons: elderly craftspeople who still practise their trades as the youth buy from companies; aspiring chefs excited to grill up some real game; this one old man who always shows up for the dried back-strap. Eden doesn't remember his name, but the man swears by the stuff. Says Eden comes with the best stock and those other hunters bring bare scraps. Not a surprise, he's seen the incompetence of others who come through the forest.
He swears he can hear laughter amongst the throngs of people. Swears that it must be directed at him. His ugly face. His huge body. His clothing, old and patched. But he has to stay. Has to do it for you. To keep you safe and out of Bailey's money machine.
He wished you were here. Wished you'd come bounding up to him with that smile of yours and drag him home. But you're also at work, coralling dogs at the pound for spare change to contribute to Eden's payments to Bailey. Apparently the mutts listen now that you smell like him. Funny thing, how he affects animals. Even dumbass chickens hate him. He'd considered getting some once, but they'd get so stressed around him they wouldn't be able to lay any eggs. Oh, and foxes could take them.
Best to stay there, in those inconsequential memories of the past. It's hard to when he sees a face that surges horrid memories to the front instead. The man looked to be about 70 by this point, wobbling around with a cane. He'd already been grey when they'd met.
"Got any boar meat, lad?" He wheezed, bug-like eyes pooring over the table. His voice was weaker than it had been. There's no flicker of recognition in the freaky eyes.
"A few cuts. Belly or back? I've got hooves, too." Eden's voice doesn't break. Doesn't show his rising panic.
A claw-like hand reaches out to where Eden directed his attention. A shiver goes down the hunter's spine. He remembers those hands. How clammy and cold they'd been. How... insistent and encompassing.
"Aye, this one's a good heavy steak. How much?"
Eden's eyes didn't leave the old man's face. "Freshest cut, got the beast last night. £5."
The old man licks his lips as he pries his wallet free, the appendage dried, cracked and pale. Just like the rest of him. He'd had a tan back then. A terrible, fake one. Fucker had been orange.
Teens ran past once more, barely missing the old man as they screamed. The crypt-bound bag of bones scoffed, disgust apparent. But his eyes linger too long on one of the older boys, with longer dark hair and a skinny frame, just about old enough to start drinking Eden thinks.
Attention soon returned to the hunter, the smile back. Oh look, he'd kept half of his teeth. Impressive for someone his age. They were rotted, though. More so than they had been when he'd visited the orphanage. Probably time for dentures. Eden could still remember the smell of his breath.
"£5, a good price for a good steak. My wife will fry this up well." He's laughing. Eden grants him a polite smile as he wraps up the meat and hands it over.
He tracks the old man as he leaves, watching as his thumb strokes over the paper bill in his hand. He doesn't take a deep breath until he knows he's gone. He can't take a deep breath until he knows, for sure, that he's gone.
£2.50 was what he'd payed for Eden back then.

Now that the brunt of summer is upon us, nothing holds more meal appeal than a refreshingly cool, crunchy, raw salad. Not only are salads chockful of important nutrients, but they also help hydrate us thanks to their water and electrolyte content. In fact, official heat safety guidelines encourage the consumption of more fruit and vegetables during temps like this. So, if your arm is getting a little sore from lugging around that oversized reusable water bottle, try introducing these iconic summer salads made with fresh farmers market produce to your dining repertoire.
Caesar Salad The Caesar salad just celebrated its centennial birthday! This popular salad is believed to have been created by Italian immigrant restaurateur Caesar Cardini (1896–1956) on July 4, 1924, at his restaurant, Caesar's Place, in Tijuana, Mexico. Cardini moved his restaurant from San Diego to Tijuana to attract American customers seeking to circumvent the restrictions of Prohibition.
Over a busy Fourth of July weekend, Cardini's kitchen ran short of ingredients, and he had to make do with what was left. So, he improvised by creating a salad with romaine lettuce, croutons, raw egg, olive oil, Parmesan cheese, and Worcestershire sauce that the chef tossed tableside for dramatic flair. The salad was an instant hit and went on to become a sensation across the United States.
A bedrock of any classic Caesar salad recipe, romaine lettuce clocks in at 94–95% water, making it a great way to stay hydrated. In fact, a single head of romaine lettuce can contain around 20 ounces of water.
Salade Nicoise Gordon Ramsay declared that the Nicoise salad to be “the finest summer salad of all" while Delia Smith called it "one of the best combinations of salad ingredients ever invented". Hailing from the French Riviera city of Nice, the first known iteration of this Mediterranean delicacy was popularized in the 19th century and featured tomatoes, anchovies, and olive oil. Over time, the salad evolved into a catchall dish made with whatever was seasonally available from gardens and pantries.
Classic Nicoise Salad Recipe

Bon appetit!
Greek Salad The Greek salad, also known as horiatiki (village salad) or therini (summer salad), has roots in ancient Greece, where its basic components of cucumbers, onions and olives were staples in the diet. The modern version, which includes tomatoes and feta cheese, is thought to have originated in Athens during the country’s tourism boom of the 1960s and 70s. During that period, business-savvy taverna owners sidestepped the government’s fixed prices on ‘simple salads’ by slapping a block of feta on top, allowing them to charge whatever they wanted.
Given its simple preparation and seasonally accessible ingredients, the traditional Greek salad has since become a widespread and familiar summertime staple both at home and abroad. Not only are they nutrient-dense, cucumbers also contain 96% water – which is the highest water content of any food!
Whatever kinds of salads you decide to indulge in during this extended high heat, you simply can’t go wrong with copious amounts of the farmers market fruit and veg that abound right now. While we may be wilting under the searing July sun, an array of seasonal produce is ripe and ready to be plucked from the farmstalls and toted to your kitchen for chopping, slicing, dicing and tossing into the dinner salad of your summertime dreams.

El Meson- How to be Spanish
The soul of Spain in the heart of Santa Fe, El Mesón has been serving locals and visitors for almost twenty years. Born in Spain to a Spanish father and American mother, Chef Huertas, opened El Mesón in 1997 to bring the old-world Iberian cuisine and Andalusian family traditions to the City Different. El Mesón offers two dining options. The full menu is offered in El Comedor, or Dining Room. Large oak tables with soft lighting set the stage for your meal, surrounded by reproductions of classic painters, with the strains of Spanish guitar accenting your palate’s Iberian journey.
On the other hand, if you are in the mood for something lighter and livelier, you will find it in the ¡Chispa! Tapas Bar. Reminiscent of an Andalusian patio, this room features Tapas and Live Entertainment. From Tango, to Jazz, to Flamenco there is a beautiful stage showcasing some amazing talent! We offer a full bar, and Santa Fe's best selection of Spanish Wines and Sherries. ¡Hasta pronto!

Bravo Toast, 1529 Griffith Park Blvd, Los Angeles (Silver Lake), CA 90026
Missing Breadblok, the previous occupant of the space that Bravo Toast took over. It still looks like Breadblok – same furnishings, same counter, same décor, same dishes. Bravo Toast is a fancy toast café serving coffee, toast, salads, pastries, beer & wine. Bravo Toast uses quality ingredients and the high prices are the norm for this area, but the toasts are on the plain side.
Sunny toast with sunny side up egg ($13): A slice (medium thickness) of grilled Bub & Grandma’s whole grain artisan bread (great bread) with mashed avocado, one egg your way), fresh chives, and sea salt. It’s a good avo toast. The egg seemed to be farm fresh with a dark orange yolk and the yolk was runny. You can get similar toasts in the area with more avocado and more toppings though.
Cappuccino ($5.50): The price on the menu seems inaccurate. There was no foam art but the flavor was good. They use City Bean Roasters, a local coffee roaster.
Service was excellent. They brought the food to your table, offered pepper and hot sauce, and offered water. The place is still attractive in a Scandinavian way and it’s not packed with campers using their free wi-fi. The covered outdoor patio has planters, wood tables, off white walls, and touches of green.
4 out of 5 stars

What eating places are the most well-liked ones?
Ethnic food continues to be a significant factor in restaurant revenue in the United States. According to Nation's Restaurant News, fast-food burger restaurants experienced a decline in appeal in 2017. The good news is that despite the weak economy, many eateries continue to serve delectable food. Some of the finest are as follows:
Popular eatery Abe's offers traditional dining fare. The selection offers award-winning wines, quality steaks, fresh seafood, shared sides, and more. Abe's provides both delivery and takeaway. Orders placed online or through an app will be delivered right to your home.
There are poultry and seafood dishes on the menu in addition to Abe's burgers. The cuisine is delicious, and the rates are fair. Additionally, the eatery serves vegan specialties like salmon without seafood and banh mi. In the heart of central Los Angeles, the eatery is close to Cooke Park.
A hamburger topped with chile, peanut butter, or cinnamon cream cheese is one of many choices. Additionally, there are numerous varieties of cooked eggs to choose from.
Chef Jordy Navarra, formerly of The Fat Duck in the UK and Bo Innovation in Hong Kong, is the proprietor of the Filipino establishment Toyo Eatery, which places emphasis on regional tastes, dining customs, and contemporary Filipino architecture. Fantastic and inviting, with hefty acacia tables and unpolished concrete floors.
The three-cut pork BBQ, a straightforward street snack grilled over coals and wood before being finished in swine bone broth, is one of the most well-liked meals here. In Toyo Eatery's rendition, three different cuts of pork—belly, shoulder, and butt—are layered and then grilled for twelve hours to elevate this pig BBQ to a new level.
The garden vegetable entrée, a playful salad that creatively mimics soil by dehydrating eggplant and peanuts, is another standout dish. It is based on the well-known children's song Bahay Kubo, which has lines that name each of the 18 veggies.
The Bistro at Madison Square Garden is a fantastic option if you're searching for a fine dining restaurant close to MSG. There are 19 beers on draft, 19 traditional drinks, and fried green tomatoes with burrata on the menu.
Every year, millions of sports enthusiasts visit Madison Square Garden. The proximity of the stadium to some of the finest restaurants in the city is also a significant draw.
Even though the costs may be higher than what most people anticipate spending for a meal at MSG, the expenditure is worthwhile. The eatery provides a seasonal eight-seat omakase selection, but customers can also choose a complete prix fixe dinner for $55 per person.
The Carnegie Deli and Her Name is Han are two other excellent places to eat close to MSG. The Carnegie Deli, which is close to sections 105 and 106, offers mouthwatering smoked pastrami sandwiches and cheesecakes for dessert.
You can get a drink, play a game, or croon your heart out at Abe's, a lively and engaging sports pub. Additionally, it is well known for its trademark dishes, which include Philly steaks, filet tips, and crispy chicken wings.
The atmosphere was beautiful, with the main bar's long, meandering layout decorated in a tiki-inspired style. The Bambu Chute, a well-made and delectable cocktail, was one of the welcoming beverage options on the menu. The Crispy Crab Rangoons were a delicious delight to enjoy. The best aspect was how reasonably priced they were! If you are in the neighborhood, I urge you to go to this one.
The menu combines Asian and American dishes, and it includes both standard fare and some novel offerings. They have a complete bar and a patio where you can drink cocktails and take in the sunlight.

Ebiko goes well with this. 🍄🍆 Yasai Tempura (veg) ($7) Alot of Tempura for the price. 2 each of enoki, ladyfinger, pumpkin and eggplant 🐟🐟 Carpaccio ($18) Swordfish and salmon slices with a sour and savoury sauce. Topped with lots of onions and garlic. This is so freaking good!!!! 🐟🍚 Aburi Chirashi ($19) Cheaper than the normal chirashi. Comes with salmon, swordfish, fluke fin, white tuna and shiok sauce 🍣 Shiok Maki ($18.80) Super creamy again. But it's heavier, like mayo. Needs more burnt flavour too. 🍵 Green Tea ($1) Hot green tea is refillable but not the cold green tea (at Koh Grill & Sushi Bar) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp4yXdTrjYwMJ49_IK4ym6d8ne-K8am7tSmJRM0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I left a reply about how I expend so much worldbuilding space on food as a dungeon master my players go to a new place and immediately demand that I show them the menu, and just in case you were doubting me, (and in case you wanted to read the menu) I wanted to give you this: The Trussed Toad Teahouse, located in Spinner's Dell, a township in Faery/The Feywild populated by spider-people. Their shingle is a bewildered-looking toad caught in a spider-web strung between bent reeds over a stream.
Spinner’s Dell has little need for a public house, but traders do come through periodically and there are harvesting or manufacturing seasons when hamlet-dwellers come to the village to assist with large community projects, so the Trussed Toad, run by Nephili Trivipe (NG Male Drider, Golden Orb Weaver), fills that niche.
The Trussed Toad offers meals of local cuisine, which may not be palatable to outsiders but is well-made and nutritious. In addition to individual meals, they can cater a banquet for the standard 10gp/person price (Drinks are extra). In general, they will only be serving one or two meals from each tier per day, but will open the kitchen for wealthy or famous clients who request something particular.
Snacks (1sp): cone of roasted/spiced june bugs, grubs, or cockroaches; a single caterpillar, grub, or centipede skewer; packet of roasted spiced nuts; braided honey-grilled spring onions w/crispy minnows; raw honeycomb with bee larvae
Modest Meals: Pan Fried Mealworms or Grasshoppers, Roasted Carp or Catfish, Roasted Chicken, Rabbit Stew, Snail and Onion Stew, Mixed Bean/Grub/Farro Porridge. Sides include roasted turnips, fresh greens, seasonal fruit and berries, and bread (red beans, millet and grasshopper flour) with honey.
Comfortable Meals: Roasted Goliath Grub, Snake Stew, Bean Bread & Plum Pudding, Grilled Caterpillar or Centipede Skewers, Venison and Bean Stew, Snail & Crawfish Sautee, Grilled Frog Legs. Sides include fried garlic blossoms, green salad with insect protein, rainbow carrots and watercress, and mustard radish chips.
Wealthy Meals: Stuffed Trout, Baked Pheasant, Poached and Peppered Quail Eggs, Sauteed Water Beetles (like scallops), Roasted Duck, Wild Pork, Slow-Cooked Offal. Sides include spiced fingerling potatoes, candied seasonal fruits/berries, braised vegetables, whole roasted songbirds or sardines.
I sure do talk a lot about food as a way to build connections with people for someone who never cooks
