He knew what being sick meant. They had told him all about it, but being a monster he had never experienced it before. Before now, anyway. It was awful. It almost made him wish he hadn’t become a regular person. He didn’t realize it at first, feeling slightly off. He sneezed more, kept sniffling, this gross stuff came out. But then his head ached and he could hear less from one side, sounding like static fuzz. Then came the draining and coughing and he sure as hell could not ignore or hide it anymore.
He coughed into his sleeve again, having been yelled at before that it was gross not to.
“Oh, poor Shadow.” Green frowned. “That sounds terrible.” He walked into their room with a glass of warm water mixed with honey, and handed it over.
“Thaah-aa- ahem” he cracked. “Thanks OG.” Shadow drank gratefully. Slightly soothing his rough throat. “Mm.”
“Blue is making some honey candies for you to suck on, some of them with some herbs Vio grows he says will help with vitamins and soothing and… I don’t remember honestly he was rambling. He’s so worried about you, it’s sweet.” Shadow blew his nose into a tissue and tossed it into the trash bin they set next to the bed. “Getting bored yet?”
“Yeah,” he admitted, “I might actually end up reading some of the books Vio left for me. He said they’re not too hard and mostly fiction.” He sighed nasally, leaning his head back and then forward again. ‘ughh okay nope can’t do that. eugh. How can y'all stand this? I can literally feel it draining into my-”
“Eww- Shadow gross! I don’t wanna hear about it.” Green made a face and patted his leg. “Drink your water, Vio’ll bring up some tea and whatever he’s brewing up down there. Let us know if you need anything else okay, buddy?” he got up and Shadow nodded, turning an agreement into another cough.
“Feel better,” he left him alone to his misery.
Shadow woke up, head feeling giant and chest tight. He sat forward coughing harshly. Someone next to him gently rubbed his back. Shadow’s eyes napped up, instantly relaxing when he saw it was Vio. “Hey…”
“Hey, love. How you feeling?”
“Same.” he frowned. Vio handed him a glass of honey yellow liquid that was purple on the bottom. It was warm to the touch. “?”
“It’s a tea short version. It has honey, lemon, menthol, elderberry syrup, cinnamon, and of course water. I made it sweeter for you.” Vio kissed his forehead. Shadow shut his eyes, the appreciation of care warming him in a way much better than the fever.
“I love you.” Shadow stirred the drink with the long spoon that was in the cup and drank some. “Oh, wow.” he chugged half. “I didn’t expect medicine to taste good?”
“It’s not quite medicine,” he smiled, “But close enough.” he handed over a small compressed thing. “This is, though. A new technique I’ve been working on with Syrup. It’s a bit much to explain everything but it should help your fever and swelling.”
“Are you saying that because there’s some kind of mushroom in it?” Shadow deadpans at him. Even if he couldn’t taste them, he absolutely hated mushrooms. Vio didn’t respond, only pushing the tiny piece at him. Shadow made a dramatic sigh that turned into a cough. “Fuck- fine. anything to feel better at this rate.”
“Take it whole without chewing, drink with it.”
“I know how to swallow, darlin.” Shadow laughed and winked. He winced and then took the medicine. “Ugggh.”
“Good boy.”
Shadow’s face pinked, and the whipped around the face him. “Excuse me!?”
“hahahaha,” Vio wrapped an arm around him. “You earned that one,” He maneuvered Shadow off the bed. “Come with me.”
“Where?” Shadow wobbled, dizzy. He helped lead him to their bathroom, where a hot bathrub steamed a little, smelling faintly of flowers. It had to be strong if Shadow could smell it in his state. The mirrors were all fogged up already.
“A warm bath is gonna help a lot. It soften the muscus in your nasal passages and lungs.”
“Can I have that in Hyrulian please?” Shadow pulled off his sweaty top and pants shamelessly. Despite his earlier joke, he really was in no mood to be fooling around like that right now.
“You’ll feel better. Sneeze and cough when you need to and get rid of it.” He translated, and helped Shadow into the tub.
“Oooh.” He laid back, the salted bath soothing him. He even tilted his head back a little against the ledge. “This is nice.” Vio sat next to him. “Thanks darlin.” he sighed and relaxed in the water, letting the warm steam help clear him up. Vio handed him tissues as he needed between small talk. Which mostly consisted of just Vio talking at him, instead of with, but he was okay with that. Vio leaned in with something on his hands. “??”
He started to scrub his hair with something sudsy. Shadow hummed and shut his eyes and he was pampered. Vio gently rubbing his scalp and washing him clean. “Okay, love, dunk for me?” Shadow submerged his head and came back up. “Perfect,” He grabbed a sponge and soap.
“You know I can bathe myself right?” Shadow isn’t actually protesting, as evident by his arm he puts out for him right away.
“I know. But I like taking care of you, you deserve it.” Shadow didn’t expect that, not in that sweet tone that Vio reserved only for him. His heart soared and he had to look away. He chuckled and washed him with care, taking some time. Down his thighs and between of course. Shadow grumbled at him for teasing him and he moved on. Vio left a delicate kiss to his lips.
“Don’t- you’re gonna get sick.” Shadow frowned sternly.
“Love, I’ve been sleeping and laying next to you. I’m going to get sick anyways.” he places another on his forehead again. He helped Shadow out of the draining tub and dried him off, while he held the counter for balance. Vio kissed his hand and arms and shoulders and stomach.
“Vio,” he warned.
“Mmmhm.” he relents. “Wait here a second, I forgot to grab clothes for you.” He hands over the towel to cover up while he stepped out. Shadow looked dup to the ceiling. He would be the death of him, he swore. But he did feel much better. Vio returned with some soft cotton pants and an undershirt. Shadow slipped into them, relishing the clean clothing. They walked back to the room where fresh bedding now covered their bed.
“Aw, Vi,” he started.
“Mm-m. It’s good for you. Sleeping in your own germs with only get you worse. Plus feeling clean makes you heal faster.” Vio laid him back down with a fresh blanket. “I’m gonna start on a stew with Red.”
“Potatoes??” he perked up.
“Of course, love.” He could hide vegetables easily in it if Shadow was distracted with his favorite starch. Blue knocked and walked in with a little bag.
“Hey, I got those candies.” he handed them over quickly. “Feel better.” he ran out of there. He really hated germs and sick. Vio thanked him as he ran and Shadow took one.
“I don’t know how I can thank all of you, you’re so nice.” Shadow sniffled and turned away his cough.
“Just try and get better. Worry about everything else later,” he pat his back and got up, “I’ll be right downstairs if you need me for anything.”
“Thank you.” he replied. Even though he felt awful at the same time, he felt really good. They were there for him. Shadow fell asleep like that, a tiny smile on his face.

I miss Atlas...
I miss playing with him. I miss cuddling and petting him. I even miss the times when I had to try getting him to stop biting my charger cables. I miss movie nights, glancing over at my mom to see Atlas laying in her lap- sometimes he would even be watching the screen with us.
I miss the times when he would jump up on the counter where my dad was painting, trying to get his attention, or repeatedly dipping his paw in dad's paint water to lick it off like Winnie the Pooh eating fistfuls of honey from a jar- for whatever reason, he preferred drinking that paint water over the clean water from his dish. Dad always had to reassure me that the paint he was using was non-toxic.
I miss all the time Atlas spent in my room with me, all the naps we took together, all the times he tried to get me to stop working so that I'd give him pets and belly rubs- I liked to think that it was him reminding me to take breaks every once in awhile. I miss the feeling of his soft little body plopping down against my legs at night while I was falling asleep, keeping me warm and making me feel secure. I loved watching him collapse on the bed like he was totally exhausted from sleeping there all day.
I miss his soft meow (which wasn't so soft when he wanted to be let outside). I miss the way he chirped and trilled to get attention. I miss watching him take care of his twin brother Ari, and how they loved to cuddle together.
I miss watching him jump up to the highest places in the house, and how he'd jumpscare all of us when we didn't know he was there, landing in front of us with a loud THUD! that could be heard from the other room.
I miss his big round eyes, which sometimes looked silver and sometimes looked pale green. I miss his purplish-black toe beans and brick red nose. I miss his kinked tail, which only bent at the very tip. I miss his silver fur, his fluffy yellow belly, his white muzzle, his black stripes; I especially loved the thick black stripe that ran along his spine, and how a series of stripes on his front legs looked like they formed one giant stripe across both legs when he put them together, and that the bottom halves of his feet were solid black. I miss how he showed off to everyone, he knew just how cute and beautiful he was.
I miss the loud purr he made whenever he was happy. I miss how excited he got whenever someone walked near the back door, hoping that someone would open it and let him outside- he'd look expectantly at the doorknob, and sometimes he'd even try to reach for it himself. I miss how much he loved the outdoors, I'm always reminded of him whenever I'm out in our backyard. I miss the way he rolled around on the concrete patio, the way we always had to stop him from trying to catch birds or voles living in the garden. I miss seeing him run as fast as he could down our hill whenever I called him to come back inside.
I miss that he didn't mind being pet on his belly or paws, unlike most cats- in fact, he seemed to enjoy it. I miss how he used to climb up my leg to reach my hand for pets. I miss that he could get comfortable on any surface, whether it was a hard wooden floor or a cardboard box or on top of someone laying on their side, he had no trouble making himself at home.
I miss his picky eating habits, he wouldn't touch most brands of cat food but for some reason he loved corn bread- we discovered this the hard way when we forgot to put away the corn bread leftover from chili night. I miss how much he loved catnip flavored hairball remedies- there are still teethmarks on the bag, he had apparently tried to rip into it when we weren't looking.
I miss the way he always stole my dad's paintbrushes and pens, and how we'd catch him in the act carrying them in his mouth or swatting them off the countertop. We'd find them later under the rug, or behind places like the stereo cabinet or the washing machine. I miss the paw prints and nose prints he left on our windows- some of which are still there, we didn't have the heart to wash them off.
I miss trying to teach people the difference between Atlas and Ari, it wasn't easy for everyone to tell.

I miss the big smile that Atlas always wore. I miss him making biscuits on people's bellies. I miss his stout build and his athletic nature. I miss playing the laser pointer game with him, how he would chase it in circles until he got dizzy. I miss how he sometimes left his tongue sticking out after cleaning himself. I miss how he thought he was the one chasing the deer away when we yelled at them for eating out of the bird feeders.
I miss that he'd put his mouse toys in his water dish for some reason- we always joked that he was trying to drown his prey. I miss that he would spend a few hours with each person at night, starting out sleeping in my room, then in my parents' room, then downstairs if anyone couldn't sleep and had decided to watch TV instead. I miss the way he always hung out with my brother and I while we played video games. I miss how gentle he was, that he never once bit or scratched anyone even when he was unhappy or scared.
I miss the way he hugged people's legs when he laid in their laps. I miss how he always brushed himself against my socks when I wore them, likely enjoying the feeling of the scratchy cotton. I miss how he used to drink water trickling from the sink faucet, how sometimes he'd sit there waiting for someone to turn it on for him.
I miss all those times when he was there for us- the pandemic, the loss of our other pets Tiger and Katie, the drama with family and friends, and everything in between. Whenever things were hard, Atlas was there, loving us unconditionally.

『♡』 Do you want a garden? Do you also love Katsuki? This is a great way to have fun !! I really enjoy gardening n I think this would be a beautiful way to connect with my favorite boy.
🌶 Thai Chili Peppers
Hot hot hot! These are very spicy and I think that’s why it works so well for this garden. Much like his personality, these will burn. You can grind them into a paste, use them fresh, or make sauces and jams with them.
🌼 Pot Marigold
Often bright orange and red in color! Beautiful flowers that not only repel things like nematodes from your garden but they’re often used for herbal remedies. Some varieties of marigold are safe to eat. Big, bold beautiful flowers, just like ‘suki!
🌱Green Onion
Probably one of the easiest things in the world to do! Perfect to top most dishes. You can regrow these from scraps (3-4 yields) or you can grow from seed! I currently have like 10 green onions regrowing haha. I feel like these fit well with him, I’m sure tosses some onto his food for pizzazz.
🫐 Berries
Nitroglycerin tastes sweet. That’s the inspiration for this! I chose blackberries as I feel like they’re something Katsuki would enjoy. That being said you could always go for two blueberry plants, strawberries, and the like.
🌿 Herbs
Herbs are often fairly simple to grow and care for, unlike strawberry plants (mine still hasn’t given me a berry ugh). But they can be used for teas, tinctures, salves, and more. Some of the most common to grow are basil, mint, rosemary, and lemon balm ! You can also grow your own green tea !! Make lots of little salves to rub his shoulders and massage into his back after long days. Do not plant mint in the ground it’ll spread like crazy and never go away, use a pot.
🍠 Ginseng (if you’re brave)
Bare with me here.. couldn’t find a ginseng emoji. But yes, I think ginseng could be a beautiful addition to this garden. Here’s the one qualm: patience. Much like katsuki, you are going to have to be very patient with a ginseng plant. They grow very slowly, taking around a year or more just to germinate (yes, really). Ginseng is not for you if you aren’t ready to keep the plant for YEARS as it won’t be ready to harvest until then. You can find rootlets and seeds to make it easier but you will still need to be very patient.
🍵 Ginger
If you know that ginseng isn’t your thing, why don’t we try another root plant? Ginger! I can almost guarantee katsuki uses ginger often. You will still need lots of patience! These delicious roots take eight to ten months to grow. But that’s nothing compared to the 5+ YEARS for ginseng (unless you buy a root that’s already older haha).

Welcome to Potions & Devotions, I'm your host Ash, and tonight's special is:
A glass of pinot grigio, a plate of espresso crusted asiago with strawberries, and a hill for me to die on.
Listen, I like a good white wine. I like a cheap white wine too. If I'm having wine, it's white, rosé, or it better have bubbles. And cheese, you can't go wrong with cheese. Asiago is tasty, and this espresso crust gives it a bold, earthy note that contrasts nicely with the strawberry. So, with that, I feel like chatting about correspondences. Now, I certainly could chatter on about the uses of white wine and espresso in magic. But I won't. Buckle up.
Correspondences in Witchcraft
Isn't it so nice to have correspondence lists? They're so convenient, and just make it so easy to throw together spells and shit, don't they? You can just roulette wheel your way down a list of items labeled "good for money" until you hit on a handful of items you have in your house.
Too bad things like culture, personal connections, local uses, and specific traditions impact how we use an item in magic.
A common example is green for money. Some folks will argue till they're blue in the face that green is always good for money spells, even if your country's money isn't green, because trees and nature and abundance or something. Did you know that in China, South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan the stock market uses green for declines and red for growth? Green is directly tied to loss of money in those situations. So even the supposed universal application of green for prosperity is bullshit.
But how am I supposed to learn correspondences as a beginner if it's all subjective?!?
Start studying and recording.
Now before someone jumps in and drags my ass through the digital mud for suggesting you read, because yes my neurodivergent ass knows it can be hard to read -especially dense information- you don't need to run out to your nearest university library. Study can include reading, sure. Heck, even start with those nifty little lists that all include quartz and canva graphics. But ask where that information is coming from, and ask if it's true for everyone. Then, ask if it's true for you.
If you don't have any other resources, those pretty little lists *can* be a tool for getting started. You can do better than just skimming those lists and nodding your head though.
For one thing, ask old people in your real life what they use different herbs and rocks and such for. They've probably got folk remedies, weird lore, and local superstitions to pass on. Do any of those resonate with you? Does Old Maggie saying "chili pepper will clear out your nasal cavity and fix a head cold" sound an awful lot like the nasty cold concoction your folks fed you when you got stuffy? Congrats, you just learned that chili may very well work as a healing item for you.
Write that shit down.
If you can, add a note about why, or where you learned it.
Another thing you can do, and this is more book heavy, is look up where different correspondences come from. Did that originate in European alchemy? Did it come out of pop culture? Did Crowley pull it out his ass and slap a "genuine witchcraft" label on it for marketing to Victorian esoterics?
Maybe you're finding a lot of stuff from English folk magic is making sense for you. Then you know to look more in depth at English folk traditions and see if there's more there that makes sense. Maybe you find which things you can disregard right off the bat. Maybe you get better at identifying appropriated practices that have no place on a list of witchy ideas for celebrating the new moon. It certainly makes you more knowledgeable about your own craft.
Does this mean you're going to be putting in more work and time than copying down lists? Hell yeah. Will it be more rewarding for your practice? Almost certainly. Is it worth your time? Idfk, only you can decide if it's worth it for you.
But if you find yourself complaining that there's so much beginner material, and nothing for advancing your craft, maybe, just maybe, it's time to start looking at things that aren't going to apply to as many people as possible. I'm not saying to throw out all the building blocks you picked up when you first got started. I'm saying to make them your own. Scribble all over them, cross out lines, write in the margins! Who says YOU need to use green in money spells?! Maybe it's time to try something else and start experimenting. Go wild. Question everything, teach yourself, and accept that growing might mean leaving behind all purpose lists.
Ya know what, I lied. I am going to talk about strawberries and espresso in magic. Since I keep talking about money spells, it's only right I share something from my own spellbook with you.
Espresso holds very strong connections to money and wealth for me. I grew up poor af. I always thought anything other than a plain black drip coffee was fancy. Hell, cowboy coffee was a treat I only got when we went fishing, and I thought for a long time that's what espresso was, just, tinier. When I got older I found friends who drank Americanos (espresso poured into hot water) and couldn't for the life of me understand how that was any different from a regular coffee, except the expected price tag. When I finally had an americano I learned I was wrong. It was a different drink, and I relished it! I also learned espresso wasn't just burnt coffee boiled too long and too high. It still held a place of almost reverence in my mind though. I felt guilty liking it because it's as much as a cup of diner coffee, and it could fill a thimble (exaggeration). In my mind it still occupies a space as expensive. As a luxury. As a sign of excess. So espresso is one of my most effective tools in money spells, with an added kick of being highly energetic and encouraging movement.
Strawberries represent wealth for me in a different way. Growing up, my Nan grew strawberries. It was always a fight against time, the elements, birds and bugs to harvest enough for more than a handful sized snack at any point in time. Sure, we'd get multiple handfuls throughout the season, but a whole basket full? Nah. And getting enough for strawberry shortcake? That was rare. If we were lucky, we managed to get enough berries for a shortcake during summer. My Nan would slice up the berries, sitting in the kitchen with a big bowl and a paring knife for what seemed like hours. Then she'd sprinkle sugar over the fruit and set it aside to macerate. She'd make the shortcake, letting it cool completely. She'd give us kids a bowl of heavy cream and a whisk and tell us to keep going until our arms were about to fall off. Strawberry shortcake was a treat. It was expensive. Not monetarily, but with the time and care that went into it. So strawberries always meant something to me about success, about victory. Because it felt like victory when I bit into that cake, topped with sweet strawberries and fresh whipped cream. To this day, strawberries mean I'm going to succeed. So when I want to know my endeavors are going to pay off, I add strawberries.
