The Sacred Band of Thebes: A History of Bravery and Homoerotic Bonding
In the ancient world, particularly in Greece, the bond between men played a central role in military and social structures. One of the most remarkable examples of this bond is the Sacred Band of Thebes. This elite unit, composed of 150 male pairs, became renowned for its exceptional bravery and discipline. It exemplifies how homoerotic and homoromantic relationships in ancient Greece were not only accepted but also celebrated. These partnerships were intended to strengthen camaraderie and mutual support within the unit, uniting the soldiers emotionally and militarily.
The Formation of the Sacred Band
Established in the 4th century BC, the Sacred Band's primary purpose was to create an unyielding fighting force held together by deep emotional bonds. Plutarch, an ancient Greek writer, emphasized that the love relationships within the Band motivated the soldiers to fight more bravely and resolutely. Men who shared an intimate bond were less likely to flee in battle, not wanting to appear cowardly before their beloved.
These bonds were seen as beneficial for military strength, as the affection between soldiers enhanced camaraderie and loyalty. The philosophy was that soldiers fighting alongside their lovers would not only exhibit greater heroism but also be more willing to sacrifice their lives for their companions rather than face the shame of defeat.
The Sacred Band of Thebes is a striking example of how homoerotic and homoromantic bonds in ancient Greece contributed to strengthening military units. These relationships were not only tolerated but seen as integral to the social and military fabric. The history of the Sacred Band is a powerful testament to the strength and courage that deep emotional bonds can inspire in combat, reminding us that such connections have always been a profound source of strength and bravery.

" Awareness of Ignorance is The beginning of Wisdom.
Socrates, the ancient Greek philosopher. Here are five facts about Socrates:
Philosopher of Classical Greece: Socrates (469–399 BCE) was a classical Greek philosopher and a key figure in the development of Western philosophy. He is often credited with laying the groundwork for the Western philosophical tradition.
Socratic Method: Socrates is best known for his method of teaching, which is now called the Socratic method. Instead of lecturing, he engaged in dialogues with his students, asking them a series of questions to stimulate critical thinking and illuminate ideas. This method is still used in modern education.
Never Wrote Down His Ideas: Socrates did not leave behind any written records of his teachings or philosophy. Most of what we know about him comes from the writings of his students, primarily Plato, who documented Socratic dialogues and discussions in their works.
Charged and Executed: Socrates' unorthodox teachings and questioning of traditional beliefs led to his being charged with impiety and corrupting the youth of Athens. In 399 BCE, he was sentenced to death by drinking hemlock, a poisonous substance, as depicted in Plato's "Phaedo."
Philosophical Focus: Socrates was concerned with ethical questions and the pursuit of virtue. He often questioned the commonly held beliefs of his time, seeking a deeper understanding of concepts such as justice, piety, and the nature of the good life. His philosophical inquiries laid the foundation for subsequent philosophical developments in ethics and epistemology.

themis, goddess of justice
hello! hope everyone is doing well. I’m always here if you need hugs <3 today, we have a special guest - Themis, also known as……. (drumroll please)…….the goddess of justice!
Lillibetbunny: Your Grace, it’s an honour to have you here today! Can you please tell us something about yourself?
Themis: It’s a pleasure to be here. I am Themis, goddess of divine law and justice.
Lillibetbunny: uh…sure. Hmm.. You are one of the Titaness that came before the Olympians, right?
Themis: Yes, I am a daughter of the great Uranus and Gaia, and the second wife of Zeus.
Lillibetbunny: You have quite a family. Did you know that you had a great influence on modern law? You have even became the symbol of the rule of law.
Themis: I am glad to be a part of the law in later ages. I created rules and laws for the Titans and Olympians. They were bound to follow them before governing human conduct.
Lillibetbunny: Ah yes! I can’t imagine the chaos on Earth if you didn’t create divine law.
Themis (nods)
Lillibetbunny: I know you are busy, so I have one last question: Can you tell us about your appearance? I’m very curious about it, are you actually blind?
Themis: Of course not! I’m simply blindfolded to represent the equity of law. The scales I am holding on my right hand symbolises the fairness of the court’s decision. The sword in my other hand is the symbol of power to punish criminals
Lillibetbunny: ohhh! that’s why many statues of you are on top of courts. Anyways, thank you for joining us today, goddess. Goodbye!
Themis (waves, creating a clang)
Hey you! thank you for being here today, it means a lot to me :D I hope you learned something new. Before you go, remember that you matter a bunch and you are so loved. Until next time,
Love,
lillibetbunny
