#great movie. top-tier Best Picture winner

For me, the main litmus test of a movie’s quality is not how I feel after my first watch but how I feel after my second. If I like a film as much or more on my second watch, I take that as a good sign. Anyway, The Bridge on the River Kwai is even better upon second watch.

[Anonymous submitted] : Gold Derby has Ford vs Ferrari as one of the leading contenders for 2019 Oscar Awards Best Picture. Sounds to me like many think it’s going to be a great movie. Hurray Cait!!!
https://www.goldderby.com/article/2019/2020-oscar-predictions-best-picture/
Hello there, Anon! Thanks so much for the submission!
That’s amazing news! So that’s two entertainment news outlets I’ve seen so far that are placing Ford v. Ferrari high up on the Oscar predictions list.
It seems that Gold Derby places films into one of three contender categories: Leading, Strong, and Possible. Awesome that FvF is in the Leading category! Hurray, indeed!  I cannot wait to finally see a trailer for this movie.
2020 Oscar Predictions: Best Picture
Predicting the winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture is never easy. We were sure the top prize at the 2019 Oscars would go to “Roma” but it was “Green Book” that won. In coming up with our 2020 Oscar predictions, we considered a slew of factors, starting with the preferential ballot used to determine the winner. Add in the pedigree of the filmmakers, the critical reception to the films, the box office tally and the track record of the studios. We take all of these into consideration again as we look ahead to the 2020 Academy Awards.
Contenders began to emerge at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Others will be seen for the first time at the Cannes Film Festival in May. However, most of the top tier of Best Picture hopefuls won’t screen until September at four film festivals: Venice, Telluride, Toronto and New York. And a few will be held back till the last weeks of eligibility, getting limited releases in December.
Leading Contenders
“Ford v. Ferrari” (20th Century Fox – November 15) Director: James Mangold Writers: James Mangold, Jason Keller, Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth Cast: Christian Bale, Matt Damon, Caitriona Balfe, Jon Bernthal, Remo Girone Plot: The true story of the battle between Ford and Ferrari to win Le Mans in 1966.

Where LA’s top consumer VCs are looking to invest
From a geographical perspective, the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles startup ecosystems are no longer separated by a few hundred miles.
Top-tier VCs from SF visit LA regularly, and entrepreneurs raise from investors upstate and downstate in one process. Anecdotally, as an LA resident of 4 years, there’s been a palpable uptick of entrepreneurs from the Bay Area who move down here after exiting to found their next company.
The City of Angels is a hub for a wide range of startups, but it has two major groupings: consumer-facing startups that tap into Hollywood’s marketing culture, and the deep-tech ecosystem created by the city’s role as a hub for aerospace, defense and R&D.
To track how the ecosystem for software and digital media startups here is evolving, I asked eight of the top consumer VCs to share some of the trends they are most excited about investing in right now:
Kevin Zhang, partner at Upfront Ventures
Mike Palank, managing director at MaC Venture Capital
Brett Brewer, partner at CrossCut Ventures
Courtney Reum, partner at M13
Ron Rofe, partner at Rainfall Ventures
Ryan Hoover, partner at The Weekend Fund
Dustin Rosen, partner at Wonder Ventures
Zach White, principal at Sinai Ventures
The key takeaway is perhaps the diversity of their responses: investors here are going deep into trends across the spectrum of consumer spending. Consumer health and transportation are mentioned, as they were in my surveys of VCs in London and New York, but this group repeatedly predicts a new wave of interactive, social media startups (albeit with different perspectives on what it looks like).
Kevin Zhang, partner at Upfront Ventures
I’m a strong believer it’s the best time to be a game developer now. Every 10 years or so distribution shakes up, now giants like MSFT, Google, Sony, Epic, etc. are rushing in to shift gamers to subscriptions and cloud gaming, which means big exclusive content library building with lots of “non-dilutive” capital for developers. Games themselves are becoming bigger, cross-platform, cheaper to build and more accessible than ever thanks to advancement in game engine and networking tech. Related: there’s a new generation of mobile entertainment brewing at the intersection of short-form video, live, audience participation and social play; it’s marrying what’s worked with UGC and live video with in-app-purchases and retention tactics of casual games to create more accessible and bite-sized entertainment destinations.
Mike Palank, managing director at MaC Venture Capital
While it used to be that great content alone made for a compelling entertainment experience, as we move into the future it will be the blending of great content and amazing tech that will truly capture and retain people’s attention. We’ve seen those funny Youtube videos of babies swiping pictures in physical magazines showcasing their expectations that everything is interactive. I think in much the same way, expectations around filmed media (movies + TV) will trend towards the interactive. We are seeing some truly interesting experimentation around interactive right now from companies like Netflix, Unrd, Eko, CtrlMovie, Playdeo, Hovercast, Aether, Within, Twitch and others.
The winners of the streaming wars understand this and I believe will supplement their content slates with interesting technology to make the viewing experience unique and participatory (Quibi has already announced some examples of this). At MaC, we are looking for those innovative companies that are re-thinking how consumers experience filmed entertainment to make it more experiential, interactive and engaging.

25 Best Movies on Netflix Right Now (September 2019) | ScreenRant
While Netflix remains far and away the most popular streaming subscription service out there, it's fair to say that their selection of movies isn't quite what it once was. Netflix is opting more and more to focus on their own original content, and while much of that content is good, it doesn't do much for those looking to take in a great movie that Netflix didn't produce.
Reduction in library size aside, Netflix still plays host to some truly great films, ranging all the way from relatively recent superhero adventures to bonafide Oscar-winning classic dramas. Here are the 25 best films on Netflix that you can watch right now.
NOTE: This list is updated regularly - to ensure availability of the movies listed. Also, the list isn't ranked from worst to best, so a lower number is not meant to denote higher quality. It's just a list of 25 great movies.
Last updated: September 5, 2019
Related: Netflix Stock Hits All-Time High, Now Worth $130 Billion
Before the list proper, there are some notes to be made. First, Netflix offers a different selection in every country it services, and this list focuses solely on films available to U.S. subscribers. That said, those outside the U.S. are encouraged to still check their country's line-up, as some of these picks may also be available to them. Secondly, these 25 films are available to stream as of this writing. If and when included titles are removed from Netflix, this list will be updated with new selections.
25 Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Tumblr media
A feature-film offshoot of the classic sketch comedy series Monty Python's Flying Circus, 1975's Monty Python and the Holy Grail is regularly cited as one of the funniest comedies of all time, and is also one of the most influential movies in history. Monty Python and the Holy Grail is the film that launched a thousand memes, and anyone who watches it for the first time on Netflix is likely to come away in awe at how many common pop cultural references they now understand. For those who can't get enough, Monty Pyton's Flying Circus' full run is also available to stream.
24 Tucker & Dale vs. Evil
Tumblr media
One of the lesser-known movies on this list, 2010's Tucker & Dale vs. Evil only received a limited theatrical release, but that doesn't make it any less a great option for a night of Netflix viewing. Directed by Eli Craig, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil stars Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine as the titular duo, mild-mannered hillbillies living in West Virginia. Tucker and Dale are nice people, but resemble the type of backwoods villains seen in many a horror movie, and a series of comic misunderstandings lead a group of young friends to believe the two capable of murder. A lesson in not judging a book by its cover, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil is a great blend of slasher and comedy.
23 Pulp Fiction
Tumblr media
Director Quentin Tarantino's resume boasts many terrific films, but 1994's Pulp Fiction is still arguably his signature work, decades after it took pop culture by storm. Boasting a star-studded cast of acting greats - John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Tim Roth, Ving Rhames, and more - Pulp Fiction is one of the slickest, coolest crime thrillers to emerge from the 1990s. Chances are most reading this have seen it, but those who haven't owe it to themselves to give it a watch on Netflix.

22 American Psycho
Tumblr media
While landing the role of Batman in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy may be what cemented Christian Bale as an A-list star, just a few years earlier, the actor drew raves for his portrayal of yuppie serial killer Patrick Bateman in director Mary Harron's American Psycho. An adaptation of Brett Easton Ellis' controversial 80s-set book, the recently added to Netflix film excises some of Ellis' more upsetting sequences, but still manages to craft one of the most fascinating horror films of its decade. For his part, Bale is a revelation, exuding both undeniable menace and his own odd charm.
21 Hellboy
Tumblr media
While it's sad that director Guillermo Del Toro and star Ron Perlman never got to finish their Hellboy trilogy, there's no reason not to go back and watch their original 2004 effort again on Netflix. Hellboy only did decently at the box office, but was critically acclaimed, and earned a big enough cult fanbase to receive 2008 sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army. The Hellboy franchise will soon be rebooted with David Harbour in the lead role and Neil Marshall behind the camera, but to many, Perlman will be always be Big Red.
20 Moonlight
Tumblr media
Directed by Barry Jenkins, 2016's coming-of-age drama Moonlight will - for better or worse - probably always be known as the movie that won Best Picture only after the award had been mistakenly given to La La Land. That aside, Moonlight deserved the awards love, and is definitely in the top tier of Netflix's movie selection. The film follows three stages in the life of Chiron Harris (Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders, and Trevante Rhodes), a young black man trying to both make his way in the world and come to terms with his sexuality, despite dealing with homophobia and his drug-addicted mother. Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris, Janelle Monae, and Andre Holland also star.

19 Groundhog Day
Tumblr media
Bill Murray is generally regarded as one of the most beloved actors of all time, and boasts a resume most performers would be jealous of. Truly one of his best turns came in 1993's Groundhog Day, playing acerbic weatherman Phil Connors. To call Phil a huge jerk would be putting it mildly, but fate has decided to make him relive the same titular day over and over again, until he learns to be a better man. A critical darling, the film was directed by Murray's old Ghostbusters pal Harold Ramis, and is a top-tier Netflix addition.
18 Platoon
Tumblr media
While director Oliver Stone is most closely associated nowadays with his penchant for conspiracy theories and being outspoken politically, that doesn't mean his films aren't still by and large brilliant, and worth checking out on Netflix. One of the best is 1986's Platoon, which is based on Stone's own experiences serving in the Vietnam War. The cast is loaded with talent, including Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger, Willem Dafoe, Keith David, Forest Whitaker, and even Johnny Depp in an early role. War truly is hell, and Platoon presents that reality more vividly than the vast majority of movies.
17 Taxi Driver
Tumblr media
Often cited as one of legendary director Martin Scorsese’s best films, 1976’s Taxi Driver also features one of the greatest performances to come out of the long acting career of Robert De Niro. Written by Paul Schrader, Taxi Driver stars De Niro as Travis Bickle, an already tightly wound Vietnam veteran who finds himself slowly becoming more and more disillusioned with society after witnessing the rampant crime and corruption in New York City. Bickle of course eventually snaps, going on one of cinema’s most infamous violent rampages. Any serious film fan needs to have seen this film, and Netflix is a great way to do it.

16 Raiders of the Lost Ark
Tumblr media
Directed by legendary hit-maker Steven Spielberg, 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark introduced the world to one of the greatest action/adventure franchises in cinematic history, and also one of cinema's greatest heroes. Harrison Ford stars as Indiana Jones, a university professor professionally, but a crusading archaeologist and adventurer in his off time. In his film debut, Indy outruns giant boulders, punches out giant Nazis, and quests for the fabled biblical artifact known as the Ark of the Covenant. All three Indiana Jones sequels are also now on Netflix.
15 V for Vendetta
Tumblr media
Many pieces of dystopian fiction have taken a look at what the residents of a so-called democracy will tolerate in the name of security, and V for Vendetta treads that well-worn path to an extent. Based on a graphic novel written by  comics legend Alan Moore though, the Wachowskis' film manages to inject new life into the idea of a dystopian future. Set in an alternative UK ruled by a neo-fascist regime, V for Vendetta stars Hugo Weaving as the titular enigmatic revolutionary, and Natalie Portman as Evey, who (initially unwillingly) gets sucked into his crusade. This movie is more than worth streaming on Netflix, even if it isn't the 5th of November.
14 Black Panther
Tumblr media
After making a celebrated debut in Captain America: Civil War, T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) got a movie to call his own with colossal 2018 hit Black Panther. To refer to director Ryan Coogler's new to Netflix film as a success would almost be a disservice to just how well it performed, hauling in over $1 billion at the box office, and earning critical raves (97% on RT). While T'Challa was snuffed out by Thanos' snap near the end of Avengers: Infinity War, it's obviously only a matter of time until the King of Wakanda returns.

13 Gremlins
Tumblr media
It really says something about the enduring popularity of director Joe Dante's 1984 hit Gremlins that there's seemingly always talk about a new addition to the franchise, despite no films being made since 1990's Gremlins 2: The New Batch. A seamless blend of comedy, horror, and Christmas, Gremlins introduced the world to the adorable Mogwai known as Gizmo, as well as the malevolent titular creatures that spawn when the rules of Mogwai care are violated. Produced by Steven Spielberg, Gremlins was also one of the films that pushed the limits of the PG rating, leading to the creation of PG-13. It may not be December, but Gremlins is a great year-round Netflix pick.
12 The Sixth Sense
Tumblr media
While director M. Night Shyamalan's career hasn't quite lived up to what most expected, his 1999 breakout hit (85% score on RT) The Sixth Sense made such a great first impression that he's arguably been riding its wave ever since. Bruce Willis stars as Dr. Malcolm Crowe, a psychiatrist trying to help troubled young boy Cole (Haley Joel Osment), who is burdened with the ability to see and interact with ghosts. For those wondering, no, the big twist won't be spoiled here, for the small subset of Netflix subscribers who aren't already aware of what it is.
11 Rain Man
Tumblr media
One of the many triumphs to come out of the 1980s from director Barry Levinson, Rain Man tells the unlikely story of slick, fast-talking hustler Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise, in one of the early roles that proved to audiences that he was capable of far more then headlining popcorn fare like Top Gun), who's shocked to find out his father’s sizable estate is being passed on almost entirely to autistic savant Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), an older brother he never knew he had. A critical darling, Rain Man picked up four Oscars, including Best Picture, and Best Actor for Hoffman. It's a great addition to the Netflix catalog.

10 The Conjuring
Tumblr media
One of the creepiest films to grace Netflix, director James Wan's The Conjuring impressed both fans and critics, earning an 86% RT score and making a truckload of money. The Conjuring has since spawned its own cinematic universe of sequels and spinoffs, including about the possessed doll Annabelle. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga star as real life "demonologists" Ed and Lorraine Warren, while Lili Taylor and Ron Livingston play the heads of the family beset by demonic forces.
9 Avengers: Infinity War
Tumblr media
Arriving on Netflix just in time for Christmas 2018 is Marvel Studios' MCU blockbuster to end all MCU blockbusters, Avengers: Infinity War. Well, at least until the story continues in 2019's Avengers: Endgame. It's hard to imagine anyone reading this hasn't seen Joe and Anthony Russo's $2 billion-grossing, critically acclaimed hit, but that doesn't mean there''s no reason to stream it again. Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Chris Pratt, Josh Brolin, Tom Holland, Scarlett Johansson, and more fill-out Marvel's most star-studded project to date.
8 Schindler's List
Tumblr media
An Oscar-darling - winning seven awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Steven Spielberg - Schindler's List (97% on Rotten Tomatoes) is widely considered one of the greatest films of all time, and it's now on Netflix. However, it's also one of the hardest to watch, as the subject matter is just so incredibly sad. Liam Neeson stars as Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who effectively saved the lives of over a thousand Jews during the Holocaust by employing them in his factories. Ben Kingsley and Ralph Fiennes also star.

7 All the President's Men
Tumblr media
Considering the modern day scandal surrounding the American presidency, there's never been a better time to revisit the 1976 classic All the President's Men on Netflix. Directed by Alan J. Pakula, All the President's Men shines a spotlight on the real story of reporting duo Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) and Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman), whose work helped expose the truth behind the infamous Watergate scandal, and bring down president Richard Nixon. The film earned eight Oscar nominations, winning four.
6 Thor: Ragnarok
Tumblr media
One of the most recent entries into Marvel Studios' MCU canon, director Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok represented a major shift in tone and style from the prior Thor films. Thankfully, this new, sillier version of Thor went over well with the masses, and is an excellent choice for Netflix streaming. Critics also loved it, with the sequel sporting a 92% score on RT. Ragnarok sees Chris Hemsworth's Asgardian hero set out to save his home from Hela (Cate Blanchett), aka the Goddess of Death. Assisting him in this quest are Loki (Tom Hiddleston), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson).
5 Rocky
Tumblr media
While all the sequels don't necessarily live up to the greatness of the original, inspirational sports dramas don't really get more inspirational than 1976's Rocky, the movie that made star Sylvester Stallone an icon. Stallone also wrote the script, which concerns small-time boxer Rocky Balboa getting an unexpected shot at world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). Rocky would go on to win Best Picture at the Oscars, and give birth to a franchise that still continues via the Creed films. Rocky II through Rocky V are also available on Netflix.

4 Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Tumblr media
Since 2016, Peter Parker's live-action film incarnation has been swinging under the auspices of Marvel Studios' MCU franchise, but last year, Sony did something outside those bounds, creating an Oscar-winning animated masterpiece called Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Featuring the voice of Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Into the Spider-Verse sees an experiment ordered by Kingpin go awry, and rip a hole in reality that allows Spider-people from various alternate universes to journey over to Miles' world. It's then up to the group of heroes to close the rift, and get everyone back to the dimension they belong in.
3 Jackie Brown
Tumblr media
The third feature film by director Quentin Tarantino, Jackie Brown is an adaptation of author Elmore Leonard's 1992 novel Rum Punch, and stars blaxploitation legend Pam Grier in the titular role of a stewardess who runs afoul of a crime lord. In many ways a tribute to Grier's classics like Foxy Brown, Jackie Brown's star-studded cast also includes Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Forster, Bridget Fonda, Michael Keaton, and Robert De Niro. While not as highly regarded as predecessor Pulp Fiction, critics still loved Jackie Brown, and it’s a prime Netflix pick.
2 Scream
Tumblr media
After ruling the 1980s, the slasher subgenre of horror had fallen off big time by the mid-1990s. That was until director Wes Craven came along in 1996 to revitalize it, just as he had in 1984 with A Nightmare on Elm Street. In addition to being a brutal slasher flick, Scream is also one big love letter to horror fans, taking pleasure in both pointing out the cliches of the genre and still indulging in many of them. Scream is also a damn good murder mystery, keeping the viewer guessing as to the identity of the masked Ghostface killer. Those wanting to binge the franchise are out of luck though, as the only sequel Netflix offers is Scream 4.
1 Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Tumblr media
Easily one of - if not the - most controversial and divisive entries in the entire Star Wars canon among fans, director Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi was nevertheless a huge hit with critics, earning a stellar 91% score on RT. The sequel also earned huge bank at the box office, hauling in over $1.3 billion worldwide, and easily topping the list of the highest-grossing movies of 2017. Whatever one thinks of The Last Jedi, it's impossible to deny that the film is worth a Netflix watch at least once, in order to be part of the ongoing cultural conversation surrounding it.

Anonymous Asks Answered
Part 1
All answers under the Read More!  This is gonna be in 2 parts since I did get quite a few.  A few of these have been answered separately on their own.  If you missed them, just search the tag “asks” or “replies” on this blog and you should be able to find them.
If you’re viewing this on the app, you won’t be able to read under the Read More apparently, so please view it in Desktop mode on your phone browser.
Tumblr media
I feel like my answer to this should be obvious lol.  As you’ve seen, I basically scanned the entire thing, so if you looked at all that and you’re still on the fence, I’d still say buy it because it’s really great quality and you’d be supporting the production!  I understand giving the postcards a pass since one of them is literally just a picture of a volleyball on the stage (I still bought it tho), but I think the guidebook is absolutely worth it.
Tumblr media
Ahhhhh always a really difficult question!!!  Ok in no particular order, my favorites include, Suga Kenta, Kimura Tatsunari, Akisawa Kentarou, Hashimoto Shouhei, Ino Hiroki, Kondou Shouri, Nagata Takato, Kawasumi Bishin, and Arisawa Shoutarou (I decided to stop at 10 lol).
Tumblr media
For future reference, this is literally one of the more specific asks and not vague at all!  But unfortunately, I really don’t know of any Judai/Sonde specific blogs.  I will say that it would be hard to run one for Sonde because he only has a blog, no twitter or instagram, and he updates it REALLY rarely.  I’m talking like once or twice a month?  So just based on that you’re more likely to find a Judai-specific blog.  I can try to update on him more but he is one of the actors that tends to not say that much when he updates, which is every day.  Just usual things like, went to rehearsals, came home, gonna sleep lots!  That’s like 85% of what he posts.
Tumblr media
I reeeeeally could not give you those specifics, EVEN IF I knew them, which I don’t.  I especially could not give an answer as to how theater staff are paid, but whenever possible, if you can financially support the productions, I will always encourage people to do so.  With DVD purchases especially.  And then after that, whatever they make, at least you’ll have contributed a little!  As to how popular it is compared to other 2.5D shows, there’s no denying it’s up there.  It gets a lot of press, and a few avenues of promotion that certain other plays don’t get because it stems from an already-existing, very-popular Jump series.  It’s still no Tenimyu, and I don’t think it out-performs Touken Ranbu, but it is very highly regarded and stands in the top tier.  But stage plays are still a niche market, and you can be in the top-level productions as a minor character and still not make very much.
Tumblr media
They all wear face masks all the time actually, especially as the weather gets colder.  Japanese people habitually wear face masks to avoid getting sick, prevent other people from catching what they might have, and also just to keep their faces warm because Tokyo is WINDY and cold as fuck in winter.  I used to wear one just to keep my face warm, and so did most of my friends.
Tumblr media
Well I’ve posted the two major parts of the rap battle in two posts already that I’ll link below, but I don’t know where you can download it.  I bought my own DVD to rip those clips from, and I highly encourage people that can buy their own DVD to do so.
Part 1: (x) Part 2: (x)
Tumblr media
I’ve mentioned before in several prior posts and have also shared dress rehearsal footage for Winners and Losers in which both Shouri and Takato cross-dress to play Aoba Johsai fangirls for the match between them and Karasuno.  Shouri is talking about his cross-dressing experience playing that fangirl.
Tumblr media
They both wear wigs.
Tumblr media
I claw my face about this pretty much every week.  Basically, just use Tumblr on your internet browser on your phone and set it to Desktop mode because if you’re using the Tumblr app, it’s shit.  There is no way to get those links to work on mobile and that’s not your fault or mine, it’s that the Tumblr mobile app SUCKS BALLS.
Tumblr media
It really depends on the agency.  Obviously some of them are more restricting than others, but in general most talent agencies feature a wide variety of talents, including models and singers, not just actors.  Many of the actors belong to smaller subsidiary agencies of Watanabe Entertainment which is a huuuge agency featuring many many actors and singers and other types of entertainers.  Japanese talents tend to work a little differently; you pick a specialty for sure (acting, singing, dancing, etc...) but you’re generally expected to be able to do a little bit of everything.  ESPECIALLY stage actors.  In Hollywood, we have a bunch of actors and actresses who can’t carry a tune to save their lives, but in Japan, they try to use every person for as many different things as possible so even if your specialty is acting and not singing, you may be required to sing for a role at some point.  Every actor therefore does their best to expand their overall repertoire of available skills.
Across the board though, there is an overall restriction across 99.9% of agencies that forbids actors from talking about their personal lives and relationships.  Commonly known as the “love ban” it applies most strictly to idols and musicians, but also gets applied to actors and seiyuu.  For the most part, nobody is known to be dating until they’re about to get married.  And then maybe you’ll see a marriage announcement, or in some cases, you have to keep your marriage a secret.  I’ve seen stage actors announce upcoming marriages and now even some seiyuu, so it’s not impossible.  Overall, stage actors are allowed more freedoms than TV/movie actors and musicians/idols.  I feel like models have the most freedoms allowed based on what I’ve seen.
Tumblr media
MAN THAT DRAMA WAS HELLA BAAAAAAD but I love Peacemaker Kurogane~ Kenta’s been around though... he’s been acting since he was a child, I think his first role he was 4 years old?  He features in a wide variety of stuff from TV shows to movies and variety shows.  Since his role in Peacemaker, he’s done mostly movies, but he obviously made the transition to stage because he absolutely had to play Hinata no matter what.  ^_^
I get this question about Allen a lot and I need to clarify that I don’t actually have a 100%, for-sure answer since I don’t have his birth certificate and I don’t know his parents, but I do not think he is half.  I have mentioned before that his name is spelled with Kanji ( 亜廉 ) and that Aren is an existing Japanese name that just happens to have a really nice English equivalent.  Allen did study English back in school, so he would know that better than most.  And I will say that he’s at least a quarter if not half Okinawan (he mentions an Okinawan grandmother in an older blog post).  So his features aren’t entirely main-island Japanese, and that may be where people are getting the impression that he’s half along with the romanization of his name, but I really do not think so.  To me, his features still look entirely Asian.  Justin we know is half Australian.
Tumblr media
Winners and Losers pretty much covers just the Interhigh match between Karasuno and Aoba Johsai.  They do cover the post-match meal and Hinata and Kageyama getting upset and promising to never apologize anymore, and they do go through the third-years deciding to stay on the team, but in 3 acts it covers mostly the match.  They do throw in a lot of flashbacks and they do include a flashback about the Karasuno third-years that in the manga occurs during the Shiratorizawa match (so that’s earlier than expected), but it’s still mostly just the match.

Oscars 2019
Once again, I have managed to see all the Best Picture winners. Hurray!
Numbered lists are great, but you know whats even better/worse? Tier lists. And not just any tier list, but one with almost as many tiers as listables.
Y-Tier: As in “But Why?”
Tumblr media
A Star is Born – The movie is awful for Christ’s sake! Lady Gaga’s ‘acting’, the sappy songs, the unearned melodrama – it’s all bad. Doesn’t anyone notice this? I feel like I’m taking crazy pills! If this movie wins Best Picture, I will be irrationally upset. Ok, fine. Bradley Cooper is a great actor. It’s not a huge revelation, but seeing him act circles around Lady Gaga and her soulless, lifeless eyes just made it so much more apparent. Walk the Line is such a better “musician-love-story-where-the-dude-has-a-substance-abuse-problem” movie. And that was based on real people. This movie was fiction, they could’ve chosen to do literally anything plotwise and yet it is an hour until something actually happens.
M-Tier: Mediocre
Tumblr media
Bohemian Rhapsody – A contradiction of a movie. Is it about Freddie Mercury (which is 95% of the marketing) or Queen, the band as a whole? If the former, then why do you skim over so much of his life and never go in depth enough? If the latter, then why is Freddie the only band member who has his personal life shown? It is a series of events and songs in the band’s history yet changes a lot of facts. Ok, so if it is not trying to be a serious, accurate depiction, then it’s just a nostalgia trip that doesn’t actually use Freddie’s iconic voice … Man, Walk the Line is such a great movie.
Tumblr media
Green Book – It’s supposed to be a comedy, right? I suppose Viggo Mortenson’s parody of a New Yorker stereotype was somewhat amusing, but there wasn’t much else to laugh at/with. Also, it is a bit insensitive to make a movie where race, a very loaded topic, is such a prominent aspect of the plot, yet approach it in such a simplistic, childish manner.
B-Tier: Movies about black people that were mostly good, though still not quite Best Picture Winner material. My most specific category.
NB! It would have been nice if Green Book was less bad so it could fit in this category too. Oh well, fuhgeeeettaboutit.
Tumblr media
Black Panther – A lot of people are up in arms with this, a Marvel superhero movie, being nominated for Best Picture. Those who are upset by it, I say that Avatar was nominated for Best Picture and this is much better. And it is a culturally impactful film in the US. To those saying it should win as well, I say. No. It’s good, but it’s not that good. Though compared to other Marvel movies with paper-thin villains and plots, it might seem like a mastapiece.
Tumblr media
BlacKkKlansman – It’s a Spike Lee film. It’s about race and gets preachy (though not too much). Some of the evil racists might seem cartoonish strawmen, but then the movie shows real footage of Charlottesville and you’re like ‘Oh yeah, people like that exist’. Funny and sad at the same time. I wouldn’t mind if it won.
A-Tier: Acceptable
Tumblr media
Vice - Like The Big Short before it, this takes a topic that otherwise would be dry and stuffy to many and spices it up with 4th wall breaks and metahumor. It is entertaining which is more than could be said by some of the other nominees. Dick Cheney sure was a dick and he did do plenty of horrible things. The movie doesn’t skip over them, but with the generally lighthearted tone overall, it does end up underplaying the more serious aspects. Is an incompetent person in power worse than a competent, malicious ruler?
Tumblr media
Roma - The artsy-fartsy movie of the bunch. It’s a black and white mood piece with subtitles. That’s about as artsy as a fartsy gets.
S-Tier: The Highest Tier
Tumblr media
The Favourite – My favorite movie of the bunch and it isn’t particularly close. This movie has everything: men in powdered wigs racing ducks and Emma Stone performing cunnilingus on a manic gout-ridden Queen. Enough said.
__________
Overall, a pretty disappointing list by the Academy. But awards are overrated anyway. It would be nice if one of the top-tier movies won, but if I won’t be too bummed. The best movie of the year, Annihilation, wasn’t even nominated, so what does it matter? No, I don’t need my opinions validated. I like having my opinions validated, I enjoy having my opinions validated. I have to have my opinions validated. But it’s not, like, this compulsive need.

New from Kevin Wozniak on Kevflix: What’s Streaming This Month? – June
At the end of May, HBOMax launched and really elevated the streaming services to a new level.  Along with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney+, and the Criterion Channel, HBOMax is another streaming service that is loaded with infinite content.
Even with so many streaming services, the quality of content coming to streaming is possibly the best I’ve seen in a long, long time.  Some true classics will be available for viewing, along with some fun genre fare and some new 2020 films.
Here are my picks for the best movies coming to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Disney+, the Criterion Channel, and HBOMax in June.
          NETFLIX
Full list of everything coming to Netflix in June can be found here.
    CAPE FEAR (Martin Scorsese, 1991)
Underrated in every way: an underrated Scorsese picture, an underrated Robert De Niro performance, and an underrated remake.
    CASPER (Brad Silberling, 1995)
A silly, childhood classic that is still a technical marvel 25 years later.
    CLUELESS (Amy Heckerling, 1995)
A timeless classic that could be argued as the greatest Shakespeare adaptation ever made.
DA 5 BLOODS (Spike Lee, 2020)
Spike Lee’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning BlackKklansman is a look at a group of African American vets who return to Vietnam to find the remains of their fallen Squad Leader and the gold fortune he helped them hide.  One of my most anticipated movies of 2020.
THE DISASTER ARTIST (James Franco, 2017)
James Franco gives a brilliant, uncanny performance as the legendary Tommy Wiseau in this look at the creation of the midnight classic, The Room.
E.T. THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL (Steven Spielberg, 1982)
Not much to say about this one other than it’s one of Spielberg’s best and bonafide cinematic masterpiece.
    INSIDE MAN (Spike Lee, 2006)
Spike Lee’s fun and twisty heist thriller features a trio of stellar performances from Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, and Jodie Foster.
THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (Jonathon Demme, 1991)
As good as thrillers get, Jonathon Demme’s Oscar-winning masterpiece is one of my all-time favorite movies.
    STARSHIP TROOPERS (Paul Verhoeven, 1997)
My favorite Paul Verhoeven film is a delirious, violent, darkly funny war satire.
WEST SIDE STORY (Jerome Robbins, Robert Wise, 1961)
A bright, lively, beautiful, stunning musical.
    ZODIAC (David Fincher, 2007)
One of David Fincher’s best films, Zodiac is one of the best movies of the 2000’s.
    AMAZON PRIME
Full list of everything coming to Amazon Prime in June can be found here.
    CRAWL (Alexandre Aja, 2019)
A fun little thriller about a woman trying to survive a siege of alligators during a hurricane.
  DIRTY DANCING (Emile Ardolino, 1987)
An 80’s classic.
    GROWN UPS (Dennis Dugan, 2010)
It’s stupid and peak Sandler-is-on-vacation-movie, but it’s mindless, funny entertainment.
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON (Dean DeBlois, Chris Sanders, 2010)
As good as any Pixar movie, How to Train Your Dragon doesn’t get nearly the love it deserves as one of the best animated movies of the 2010’s.
    KINGPIN (The Farrelly Brothers, 1996)
Featuring a great performance from Woody Harrelson and a scene-stealing performance from Bill Murray, Kingpin is the best Farrelly Brothers movie and a great sports movie.
    KNIVES OUT (Rian Johnson, 2019)
One of the best movies of 2019, Rian Johnson’s whodunnit gets better with every viewing.
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL (Brad Bird, 2011)
Featuring one of the best action sequences of the last decade where Tom Cruise climbs the tallest building in the world, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is one of the great action movies of the 2010’s and a perfect mix of a maniac director working with a maniac actor.
    THE NATURAL (Barry Levinson, 1984)
One of the great baseball movies and a great Robert Redford performance.
    SEX DRIVE (Sean Anders, 2008)
A wildly under-seen and utterly hilarious sex comedy.
WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE (Spike Jonez, 2009)
A visually stunning, emotional adaptation of a childhood classic.
    HULU
Full list of everything coming to Hulu in June can be found here.
THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT (Rob Reiner, 1995)
A charming political romance featuring a pair of lovely performances from Michael Douglas and Annett Benning.
A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD (Marielle Heller, 2019)
Tom Hanks becomes Mr. Rogers in Marielle Heller’s beautiful movie about love and forgiveness.
    BUFFALOED (Tonya Wexler, 2020)
One of my favorite movies of 2020, Buffaloed is a wild and crazy crime film featuring an off-the-wall, brilliant performance by Zoey Deutch.
    CASINO (Martin Scorsese, 1995)
A sprawling gangster epic from the crime maestro Martin Scorsese.
CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR (Mike Nichols, 2007)
A solid movie, but worth the watch for some solid Aaron Sorkin dialog and a top-tier Phillip Seymour Hoffman performance.
    CLEMENCY (Chinonye Chukwu, 2019)
Alfre Woodard and Aldis Hodge are outstanding in this powerful, heart-wrenching look at the relationship between a warden and a death row inmate.
I AM LEGEND (Francis Lawrence, 2007)
A smart and intense movie bolstered by a one-man showcase performance by Will Smith.
OUT OF SIGHT (Steven Soderbergh, 1998)
One of Soderbergh’s best, Out of Sight is a stellar crime film features George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez at their absolute best.
TRUE ROMANCE (DIRECTORS CUT) (Tony Scott, 1993)
Quentin Tarantino’s writing plus Tony Scott’s plus an all-star ensemble equal one of the wildest movies of the 90’s.
YOU DON’T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN (Dennis Dugan, 2008)
One of Sandler’s weirder movies, but really entertaining and funny.
  DISNEY+
Full list of everything coming to Disney+ in June can be found here.
    ARTEMIS FOWL (Kenneth Branagh, 2020)
Director Kenneth Branagh and a stellar cast of Colin Farrell, Josh Gad, and Judi Dench look to bring this YA adaptation to life.
PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTING THIEF (Chris Columbus, 2010)
A fun but forgotten adventure film.
TARZAN ( Dean DeBlois, Chris Sanders, 1999)
A late-90’s animated classic with a banging soundtrack.
    CRITERION CHANNEL
Full list of everything coming to Criterion Channel in June can be found here.
*The Criterion Channel does things a little differently than every other streaming service.  The Criterion Channel, a wonderful streaming service that focuses on independent, foreign, and under-appreciates movies, doesn’t just throw a bunch of random movies to stream.  They get more creative, by having categories like “DOUBLE FEATURES” or “FILMS FROM…”, giving us curated lists of films that somehow blend together or feature a specific artist.*
  DOUBLE FEATURES
  CITIES OF SHADOW:
The Naked City (Jules Dassin, 1948)
In a Lonely Place (Nicholas Ray, 1950)
A pair of noir murder mysteries presented by directors Josh and Benny Safdie.
    FIGURES IN LANDSCAPES
Museum Hours (Jem Cohen, 2012)
Columbus (Kogonada, 2017)
Two movies that look at unexpected human connection between two people in which art, architecture, and environment serve as characters themselves.
    DIRECTED BY MIKE LEIGH
Mike Leigh is a huge blindspot director for me.  I’ve seen a couple of movies of his, all of which I’ve liked, yet have dove more into his filmography.  Thanks to Criterion, nearly his entire filmography (the only films missing are his last two films, Mr. Turner (2014) and Peterloo (2018)) will be available to view, which has me very excited.
Meantime (1984)
High Hopes (1988)
The Short and Curlies (1987)
Life Is Sweet (1990)
Naked (1993)
Secrets & Lies (1996)
Career Girls (1997)
All or Nothing (2002)
Vera Drake (2004)
Happy-Go-Lucky (2008)
Another Year (2010)
    SCORSESE SHORTS
Criterion just dropped this on Blu-Ray not too long ago.  The collection features five Martin Scorsese short films from his time at NYU to through the early 60’s.  Martin Scorsese is my favorite director ever, so seeing his early films has me very intrigued and excited.
    JAZZ SHORTS 1929-1939
Another short film series, this one focusing on tune-filled shorts, featuring some of the greatest jazz musicians of all time in their electrifying prime.  These films were made as preludes to accompany feature films and feature the legends of Jazz like Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith, and Billie Holiday.
Black and Tan (Dudley Murphy, 1929)
St. Louis Blues (Dudley Murphy, 1929)
I Surrender Dear (Mack Sennett, 1931)
A Rhapsody in Black and Blue (Aubrey Scotto, 1932)
A Bundle of Blues (Fred Waller, 1933)
Sing, Bing, Sing (Babe Stafford, 1933)
Cab Calloway’s Hi-De-Ho (Fred Waller, 1934)
Symphony in Black: A Rhapsody of Negro Life (Fred Waller, 1935)
Artie Shaw’s Class in Swing (Leslie M. Roush, 1939)
Hoagy Carmichael (Leslie M. Roush, 1939)
    HBOMAX
Full list of everything coming to HBOMax in June can be found here.
*HBOMAX is brand new, but it has already changed the game of streaming services.  The content is so extensive and features something for everyone, whether its a Hiayao Miyazaki masterpiece, an Oscar winner from the last couple years, or a Hollywood classic, HBOMAX has it and their library is so expansive, it’s easily worth the price.*
    AD ASTRA (James Gray, 2019)
One of the very best movies of 2019, James Gray’s moody space drama sticks with you long after it’s over.
ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING (Chris Colombus, 1987)
This 80’s gem is also a Chicago classic.
DOCTOR SLEEP (DIRECTORS CUT) (Mike Flanigan, 2019)
One of 2019’s most underrated films is a bizarre, haunting sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.
    FIRST MAN (Damien Chazelle, 2018)
Damien Chazelle showed us the difficulty and horrors of going to the moon in 1969 in stunning fashion.
FORD V FERRARI (James Mangold, 2019)
Another one of my favorite movies of 2019, Ford v Ferrari is a classic American sports tale featuring a pair of dynamic performances from Matt Damon and Christian Bale.
HE GOT GAME (Spike Lee, 1998)
Spike Lee’s powerful look at basketball, redemption, and family.
THE IRON GIANT (Brad Bird, 1999)
One of the greatest animated movies ever made.
MCCABE AND MRS. MILLER (Robert Altman, 197
A Robert Altima Western starring Warren Beatty and Julie Christie.  What else do you need?
SPEED RACER (Lily and Lana Wachowski, 2008)
Panned on its initial release, Speed Racer is a gloriously bizarre and visually astounding triumph that needs to be revisited by all.
    TITANIC (James Cameron, 2007)
A movie that literally has everything.  It’s a big, bold, epic movie with romance, action, comedy, and drama and I love all 194 minutes of it.

The 10 greatest companies free of charge motion pictures
http://tinyurl.com/y5rnl94w CNET Is Netflix placing a pressure in your finances? Following a price hike earlier this year, the streaming service now begins at $9 per 30 days, with its hottest plan now at $13 and its ultra-HD tier priced at $16. Concern not: So long as you will have an web connection, you possibly can proceed to get pleasure from film night time. Granted, you might not be capable to stream Hollywood’s newest, however you possibly can nonetheless watch gems comparable to Blade Runner, Captain Improbable, Eighth Grade and loads of classics, all with out spending an additional penny. Listed below are 10 companies providing completely free, completely authorized motion pictures you possibly can watch on-line. Some provide TV exhibits as nicely. Simply be ready to sit down by means of commercials, as a result of that is how most of those companies pay the payments. And word that as a result of picks change commonly, not all of the titles listed right here should be out there. Crackle Crackle is bringing out the Star Trek classics this month. Crackle Sony’s Crackle is an ad-supported streaming service, one that gives each motion pictures and TV exhibits — together with some unique content material. It is out there on all kinds of units and does not even require you to arrange an account, although doing so lets you save favorites, get suggestions and resume playback in case you change between units. What you possibly can watch: Crackle’s choice continues to develop, with round 200 motion pictures out there at any given time. (The choice adjustments periodically). At this writing, you will discover gems like Struggle Membership, Looper, My Lady and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. They’re all older movies, to make certain, however there’s nonetheless loads of high quality stuff to look at. The place you possibly can watch: Crackle’s list of supported devices is in depth. The service affords apps for all cell platforms, recreation consoles and main streaming units, and it is even baked into many sensible TVs. It doesn’t provide the choice to obtain motion pictures for offline viewing. IMDb TV Captain Improbable is a incredible new addition to IMDb TV (previously FreeDive). IMDb This relative newcomer, previously generally known as FreeDrive, is a part of IMDb, the Web Film Database, which is owned by Amazon. In different phrases, IMDb TV is Amazon’s method of providing ad-supported film streaming impartial of Amazon Prime. And it isn’t restricted to motion pictures; there are TV exhibits out there as nicely. Sadly, there is a fairly main viewing limitation. What you possibly can watch: Although it began with solely about 100 titles, IMDb TV just announced plans to triple its content selection, which can deliver the tally into the 1000’s. Already you possibly can watch nice stuff like Captain Improbable, Paddington and Platoon, and Oscar-winner La La Land will arrive on the service on July 1.   The place you possibly can watch: IMDb TV works on any gadget that helps Prime Video with channels Hoopla Hoopla is a streaming service you might have entry to by means of your public library. Hoopla Obtained a library card? Test to see in case your library has partnered with Hoopla. This digital-media service lets you try all types of stuff — together with motion pictures. While you “borrow” a film, you will have 72 hours through which to look at it. Your library determines the entire variety of motion pictures you possibly can borrow every month. What you possibly can watch: It is exhausting to get a bead on what number of motion pictures Hoopla has out there at any given time, however you possibly can browse an enormous vary of genres — all the pieces from animation to westerns. There’s additionally a beneficiant choice of household pleasant content material. The excellent news is Hoopla does not have the identical catalog of films as most of the different companies right here; the dangerous information is the choice does not change fairly often, and it may be exhausting to seek out something acquainted to look at.  The place you possibly can watch: Hoopla content material might be considered in your PC in a browser, or on Android or iOS units. The service now helps most streaming units as nicely, together with current-generation Apple TV, Hearth TV and Roku units. Surprisingly, Hoopla’s cell apps provide not solely streaming, but in addition a obtain choice for offline viewing. Web Archive The Internet Archive is house to all issues public area, together with 1000’s of feature-length motion pictures. Maybe unsurprisingly, there isn’t any value to make use of the service, nor do you want an account (although you possibly can create one if you wish to mark favorites and such). Many basic motion pictures and TV exhibits might be discovered on the Web Archive. Screenshot by Rick Broida/CNET What you possibly can watch: “Public area” is code for “outdated” or “largely black-and-white,” making this the place for people strictly in basic movies. Thus you will discover the likes of His Lady Friday, Plan 9 from Outer House and Gulliver’s Travels. The place you possibly can watch: The Web Archive exists solely on the net, so you will want a browser to entry it. Nonetheless, most cell browsers (together with Safari on iOS) can stream the content material. Kanopy In case your library does not provide Hoopla, possibly it has Kanopy? This commercial-free (yay!) service, which started life in Australia, has made its solution to 1000’s of faculty campuses worldwide and, extra lately, varied US libraries. Test the web site to see if your library has it — and ask for it if it does not. Here is hoping your library subscribes to Kanopy, as a result of the commercial-free service has a rising choice of top-quality movies. Kanopy What you possibly can watch: Given its academic bent, it isn’t shocking that Kanopy affords a big choice of indie movies and documentaries from the likes of PBS and The Nice Programs. However its sizable library additionally consists of titles from the esteemed Criterion Collection, which is code for “movies.” There are additionally some pretty mainstream titles to be discovered, together with Donnie Darko, Ex Machina, Girl Hen and Moonlight. The place you possibly can watch: Kanopy has Apple TV, Hearth TV and Roku channels and apps for Android and iOS. It is also out there on Chromecast. Pluto TV A relative newcomer, Pluto TV is noteworthy for providing not solely on-demand motion pictures, but in addition stay TV channels together with CBS Information and, ahem, CNET. It is ad-supported, after all, however undoubtedly among the best free-content choices presently out there. Newcomer Pluto affords plenty of motion pictures, a few of that are fairly well-known and -regarded. Pluto TV What you possibly can watch: It is exhausting to say for certain what number of motion pictures Pluto has, however there are many classes, every with plenty of titles. There’s a variety of C-grade junk, to make certain, but in addition some first rate titles. A present sampling: Adaptation, Batman Begins, Layer Cake and household favourite Fly Away Residence. The place you possibly can watch: Pluto TV works in desktop browsers, but in addition affords a Home windows consumer. It has apps for Android, iOS and varied sensible TVs and channels for Apple TV, Hearth TV and Roku. Roku Channel The Roku Channel is not a free-movie supplier, however relatively an aggregator of latest and present no-cost content material. Thus, do not be stunned if there’s some overlap with a few of the motion pictures out there on different companies. You may discover motion pictures from Roku companions comparable to Lionsgate, MGM, Sony and Warner, together with free content material from present Roku channels comparable to FilmRise, Popcornflix and Vidmark.   The Roku Channel might be considered in your Roku gadget or in a browser. Roku What you possibly can watch: Like just about each free-movie channel, Roku’s rotating choice is a mixture of schlocky stuff and a few standouts. The latter embody Contact, It Follows, That is Spinal Faucet and the completely bonkers (in a great way) The One I Love. Take into account, you possibly can most likely discover most of the identical titles from the likes of Crackle and Tubi TV; the Roku Channel is merely placing some hand-picked picks below one roof. The place you possibly can watch: On Roku units, natch. However there’s additionally a browser-based Roku channel so you possibly can watch at your PC. However do not plan on going cell simply but; the Roku apps do not presently permit for streaming from the Roku Channel. Tubi TV Residence to 1000’s of free business motion pictures (although undoubtedly not commercial-free), Tubi TV affords content material from studios together with Lionsgate, MGM and Paramount.  Tubi TV has a variety of motion pictures, simply not a variety of notably good motion pictures. Tubi TV What you possibly can watch: Tubi TV has a variety of motion pictures, however likelihood is good you have not heard of most of them. To assist separate the wheat from the chaff, try the Extremely Rated on Rotten Tomatoes and Not on Netflix classes. Even then, the present choice is fairly meh; the most effective titles I discovered have been The Cabin within the Woods, Paddington and True Grit. The place you possibly can watch: Tubi TV’s list of supported devices could be very complete; the service affords apps for Android and iOS, the most important recreation consoles, main streaming units and a few Samsung TVs. It doesn’t provide the choice to obtain motion pictures for offline viewing. Vudu Walmart’s Vudu video service has been persistently increasing its ad-supported section, which permits viewers to select from a beneficiant choice of motion pictures (largely older titles, alas) to look at at no cost. This selection does require you to have a Vudu account, but it surely’s free to set one up. Vudu has plenty of free-with-ads decisions — however no good filtering choices inside these decisions. Vudu What you possibly can watch: It is exhausting to get super-excited about Vudu’s choice, which is in depth however consists of largely older and direct-to-video-caliber titles. My picks from the oldie-but-goodie checklist: Mystic Pizza, Platoon, Dangerous Enterprise and Witness. The place you possibly can watch: Vudu is obtainable just about all over the place: all main streaming units, cell units, recreation consoles and so forth. Whereas the cell apps do will let you obtain paid motion pictures for offline viewing, nevertheless, free titles can solely be streamed. YouTube You would possibly assume Google’s video service is nothing however clips and extra clips, but it surely now hosts some free full-length movies as well. (This isn’t to be confused with YouTube Red, the subscription service that features some unique motion pictures.) Simply head on to the free-to-watch section to see what’s out there. YouTube What you possibly can watch: If there’s an outdated film — sufficiently old that the copyright has expired — you are focused on seeing, you might be able to discover it on YouTube. Certainly, there are at the least 11 great movies there. However you can too discover ad-supported “trendy” titles together with 4 Weddings and a Funeral, Jiro Desires of Sushi and Moonstruck. Past that, it is a variety of dreck. The place you possibly can watch: Evidently, anyplace you possibly can entry YouTube (which is nearly all over the place), you possibly can watch YouTube motion pictures.  Initially printed on Feb. 21, 2017.Replace, June 17, 2019: Up to date film picks and companies. Replace, June 22 at 7:52 a.m. PT. Now enjoying: Watch this: 7 methods to look at motion pictures on-line free of charge 1:45 Source link

New Post has been published on Harold Gross: The 5a.m. Critic
New Post has been published on http://literaryends.com/hgblog/oscars-2019-final-call/
Oscars 2019 - Final Call
Well here we are at the end of the awards season rainbow. And since the nominations, there have been a slew of awards given out: The Annies, The Eddies, PGA, Art Directors Guild, ASC, SAG-AFTRA, Directors Guild, Writers Guild, BAFTA, CDG, etc.
Normally, these other ceremonies would have given a strong indication of who was likely to win tomorrow night, but this has been an odd year for a number of reasons. First, the talent in competition is all very good and all very different. Second, a lot of the nominees weren’t in direct competition in the same ceremonies and some of the winners weren’t nominated for Oscars. And third, Netflix. There is a love/hate thing going on in Hollywood with the rise of the streaming giant which could help or hurt it.
I think the public is well ahead of the Academy in making its decision about the legitimacy of streaming services and the release window. The viewing public makes little distinction between a theater and their home screen anymore. It is a meaningless distinction because TVs and sounds systems have gotten so much bigger and better and because of the ongoing shift to on-demand entertainment and the quality it offers.
My biggest concern as this continues is how it will affect the studio choices for what ends up on the large screen. A steady diet of action and musicals would not be my favorite result. I like the smaller scope and surprising films. It would have been criminal for BlacKkKlansmen, for example, to miss a theatrical release, or The Wife. But neither needs a big screen to succeed, though I saw both in theater, whether or not they are filmed well. The rise of AMC’s A-List and Cinemark’s club, not to mention the dying-in-the-dust MoviePass, are removing that barrier as well. The Academy needs to catch up to the reality or risk simply becoming irrelevant amidst the sea of other awards bodies.
OK, enough banter. On with the predictions…
THE MAJOR AWARDS
Actress in a Leading Role
Yalitza Aparicio, Roma Glenn Close, The Wife Olivia Colman, The Favourite Lady Gaga, A Star Is Born Melissa McCarthy, Can You Ever Forgive Me?
While this has always been between Close and Colman, I had thought Colman had the edge with the voters until recently. I think the number of unsatisfied nominations for Close, not to mention the incredible performance, are likely to take the night. Though, as I  originally said, there isn’t a nomination in this category, including Gaga, who aren’t worthy of the honor.
My choice: Glen Close Likely win: Glen Close
Actor in a Leading Role
Christian Bale, Vice Bradley Cooper, A Star Is Born Willem Dafoe, At Eternity’s Gate Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody Viggo Mortensen, Green Book
Given the options, I really felt this should have gone to Bale, but there is no momentum for him. Given Malek’s number of wins and current societal glow, I’m thinking he’s going to walk away with it. Should he and Bale split the votes, Cooper may come up the middle, but the even money is on Malek.
My choice: Christian Bale Likely win: Rami Malek
Actor in a Supporting Role
Mahershala Ali, Green Book Adam Driver, BlacKkKlansman Sam Elliott, A Star Is Born Richard E. Grant, Can You Ever Forgive Me? Sam Rockwell, Vice
Supporting roles are hard to pin some times. But this year, Ali has swept the awards for his phenomenal performance. Richard E. Grant had a good shot, but he couldn’t even pick up BAFTA this year, so it would be a hard win for him, though it is also a great performance.
My choice: Mahershala Ali Likely win: Mahershala Ali
Actress in a Supporting Role
Amy Adams, Vice Marina de Tavira, Roma Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk Emma Stone, The Favourite Rachel Weisz, The Favourite
I still think Stone and Weisz should have to mud wrestle for the win here. And Weisz should take it. However, King has been consistently snagging the statuettes and has quite the reputation.
My choice: Rachel Weisz Likely win:  Regina King
Adapted Screenplay
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Joel Coen & Ethan Coen BlacKkKlansman, Charlie Wachtel & David Rabinowitz and Kevin Willmott & Spike Lee Can You Ever Forgive Me?,  Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty If Beale Street Could Talk, Barry Jenkins A Star Is Born, Eric Roth and Bradley Cooper & Will Fetters
I think the lack of adherence to the absolute facts, regardless of artistic merit or commentary, is going to cost BlacKkKlansman (and Green Book, for that matter, in its category). Beale Street has its own momentum, and I think there is sympathy for that film. But Can You Ever Forgive Me? has always been my choice here and it is a wonderful and tight script. The movie has little other chance to win anything and it’s surprise win at the WGA, with a substantially similar field, certainly gives the possibility of a win some weight.
My choice: Can You Ever Forgive Me? Likely win: Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Original Screenplay
The Favourite, Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara First Reformed, Paul Schrader Green Book, Nick Vallelonga, Brian Currie, Peter Farrelly Roma, Alfonso Cuarón Vice, Adam McKay
Here, again, the WGA ceremony shifted the possibilities. Outside of the problems around truth and Green Book (some background and info to refute the misinformation) it is a tough field. Favourite had some early momentum, but Roma has been overtaking it. And, depending on how Best Picture swings, this is often a consolation prize. But then the wonderful Eight Grade walked away with the WGA, and it wasn’t even nominated for an Oscar. Of course, WGA had a significantly different field as well. I’m suspecting a lot of vote splitting here and a likely surprise. Being forced to choose, however, here’s what I’m thinking…
My choice: Green Book Likely win: Green Book
Cinematography
Cold War, Lukasz Zal The Favourite, Robbie Ryan Never Look Away, Caleb Deschanel Roma, Alfonso Cuarón A Star Is Born, Matthew Libatique
Cold War’s win at the ASC awards put it ahead of the presumed choice, Roma, since it won from a nearly identical field by a lot of the same voters. I loved Cuarón’s use of the camera, both in visuals and as a character. I haven’t had the chance to see Cold War yet, which leaves me at a disadvantage here, though from trailers and samples I can see it is an equally beautifully filmed movie. With the ASC win, this has become a toss-up between the two. Because Cuarón also used the camera as moving eye, incorporating it as part of the action rather than just as a capture device, I’m inclined to keep my choice there and hope that the other voters agree.
My choice: Roma Likely win: Roma
Directing
Spike Lee, BlacKkKlansman Pawel Pawlikowski, Cold War Yorgos Lanthimos, The Favourite Alfonso Cuarón, Roma Adam McKay, Vice
Roma has the momentum going in here. But I think that BlacKkKlansman may just edge it out as Lee has never been nominated in this category before. It’s time he had some recognition and I don’t think he can take Best Picture and I don’t expect him to get best screenplay. Typically the two categories are tied, however, so if the Netflix factor doesn’t shift the vote, Cuarón may pick this up as well.
My choice: Spike Lee Likely win: Spike Lee
Best Picture
Black Panther BlacKkKlansman Bohemian Rhapsody The Favourite Green Book Roma A Star Is Born Vice
I don’t even know what this category means anymore. Is it by what’s popular, what’s fun, what’s brave, what took the most skills? Roma and The Favorite are certainly the big guns with momentum… but that also gives voters more chance to recognize them without having to hand over the Best Picture award. Winners from the other events are all over the place. With the exception of Black Panther (fun and surprising as it is, it just doesn’t hold up on rewatch), any of the nominees could legitimately win for their quality. And Best Pic is a preferential ballot, so Green Book may come up the middle as everyone’s second choice is there isn’t a clear first round winner. So, crap shoot.
My choice: Green Book Likely win: Roma
THE NEXT TIER AWARDS
Animated Feature Film
Incredibles 2 Isle of Dogs Mirai Ralph Breaks the Internet Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Nothing in the intervening time between nomination and tonight have changed my opinions. Add to that its near sweep at The Annies and Spider-Man should walk away with this award.
My choice: Spider-Man Likely win: Spider-Man
Foreign Language Film
Capernaum (Lebanon) Cold War (Poland) Never Look Away (Germany) Roma (Mexico) Shoplifters (Japan)
Shoplifters would have been my early bet here, but Roma is truly a great film and has huge momentum and a ton of noms. And the two cover similar territory in their stories. Those who have no interest in voting for it for Best Pic are likely to balance that by voting for it here. It may well cost Roma as Best Pic ultimately that the safety valve exists. Then again, if it is really aiming at Best Pic, then I don’t think it will get the votes here and Shoplifters could come to the top…which I think is the more likely scenario. But Roma could surprise and win both (or neither).
My Choice: Shoplifters Likely Win: Shoplifters
Documentary Feature
Free Solo Hale County This Morning, This Evening Minding the Gap Of Fathers and Sons RBG
How Won’t You Be My Neighbor and Three Identical Strangers missed this list, I don’t understand. However, this is the field we have to work with. But I’ll also admit I’ve not seen the majority of the nominees. Given the current state of politics, however, I’m going with our SCOTUS rep even if Free Solo wow’d audiences consistently.
My Choice: RBG Likely Win: RBG
Documentary Short Subject
Black Sheep (The Guardian) End Game (Netflix) Lifeboat A Night at the Garden (Field of Vision) Period. End Of Sentence
Likely Win: Period. End Of Sentence.
Animated Short Film
Animal Behaviour Bao Late Afternoon One Small Step Weekends
Likely Win: Bao (cause, Pixar)
Live Action Short Film
Detainment Fauve Marguerite Mother Skin
Likely Win: Marguerite
THE TECHNICAL AWARDS
Production Design (production; set)
Black Panther, Hannah Beachler; Jay Hart The Favourite, Fiona Crombie; Alice Felton First Man, Nathan Crowley; Kathy Lucas Mary Poppins Returns, John Myhre; Gordon Sim Roma, Eugenio Caballero; Bárbara Enríquez
An incredibly diverse and difficult field. There are no apples to apples here to choose from, so it is wide open. Black Panther, to my mind, had the most challenging issues and best results. They got to play in the past and future as well. But I’m thinking it will go more traditional. This is where The Favourite could get some consolation prizes or Mary Poppins, which is mostly ignored this year, could get a some love.
My choice: Black Panther Likely win: Mary Poppins Returns
Costume Design
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Mary Zophres Black Panther, Ruth Carter The Favourite, Sandy Powell Mary Poppins Returns, Sandy Powell Mary Queen of Scots, Alexandra Byrne
With Panther and The Favourite having picked up equal awards from the Costume Designers Guild in different categories, it doesn’t make this category any easier to predict. The Oscars usually go for period pieces, with science fiction being snubbed other than for f/x.
My choice: Black Panther Likely win: The Favourite (though Mary Poppins could sweep in)
Film Editing
BlacKkKlansman, Barry Alexander Brown Bohemian Rhapsody, John Ottman The Favourite, Yorgos Mavropsaridis Green Book, Patrick J. Don Vito Vice, Hank Corwin
I’ll say again, all of these films have solid editing, but only one lived and died by its edits: Vice. However. Vice wasn’t even nominated for an Eddie this year, so the fact that Bohemian Rhapsody and The Favourite won there wasn’t much help.  But against those, Vice did pick up the BAFTA. And, of course, this is one of those which could become either part of a sweep for a juggernaut or a consolation prize for a film that may otherwise go unnoticed. But I’m sticking to my guns on this one. From a story-telling point of view, I didn’t think either of the Eddie winners came close the impact editing had for the remaining nominees. And of those, Vice was the only one to use the craft to enhance the story rather than to just shock or move it along. I will admit, every time I’ve thought along these lines, I’ve been wrong, so if Bohemian takes this, I won’t be shocked, I’ll just be disappointed.
My Choice:  Vice Likely win: Vice
Original Score
Black Panther, Ludwig Goransson BlacKkKlansman, Terence Blanchard If Beale Street Could Talk, Nicholas Britell Isle of Dogs, Alexandre Desplat Mary Poppins Returns, Marc Shaiman
If old-school Hollywood wins out, Mary Poppins will be a runaway. It is certainly one of the more classic and evident scores in the field, and complex while trying to maintain and reflect on the original. Music certainly pushed along the tale in Isle of Dogs in an engaging, if repetitive, way, and the others were more subtly supported.
Likely win: Mary Poppins Returns
Original Song
“All The Stars” — Black Panther “I’ll Fight” — RBG “The Place Where Lost Things Go” — Mary Poppins Returns “Shallow” — A Star Is Born “When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings” — The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
There is only one song here that has any traction to my mind.  It isn’t perfect (and story-wise it shouldn’t be) but just try to get it out of your head.
Likely Win: Shallow
Visual Effects
Avengers: Infinity War Christopher Robin First Man Ready Player One Solo: A Star Wars Story
Despite the wealth of blockbusters here, one is infinitely better than the rest in scope and seamlessness…
Likely win: Avengers: Infinity War
Makeup and Hairstyling
Border,  Göran Lundström and Pamela Goldammer Mary Queen of Scots, Jenny Shircore, Marc Pilcher and Jessica Brooks Vice, Greg Cannom, Kate Biscoe and Patricia DeHaney
Typically, I’d stay the period piece would get this hands-down, but Vice has magic in its blood with its makeup and hair, completely remaking its actors and capturing the period perfectly.
Likely win: Vice
Sound Editing
Black Panther Bohemian Rhapsody First Man A Quiet Place Roma
The MPSE awards certainly confused this category. Roma, Bohemian Rhapsody, and A Quiet Place each walked away with sound editing honors in different categories. For the Oscars, they are all dumped into the same bucket. The momentum and recognition is likely to be with Bohemian Rhapsody, though the surprise hit A Quiet Place might get some love here.
My choice: A Quiet Place Likely win: Bohemian Rhapsody
Sound Mixing
Black Panther Bohemian Rhapsody First Man Roma A Star Is Born
My choice: Bohemian Rhapsody Likely win: Bohemian Rhapsody

The State of the 2019 Oscar Race After the Golden Globes
As Film Twitter comes to terms with the fact that “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Green Book” won Best Picture awards at the Golden Globes on Sunday night, Oscar pundits are scrambling to read the tea leaves as to what this all means. Just because the Academy Awards have become increasingly less predictable doesn’t mean people are going to stop trying to predict them. The changing body of the Academy has led to a few more surprises than usual in the last few years—and the wide-open race this year could up the number of “shocks” on nomination morning—but there are still some easily-defined tiers of likely, possible, and dark horse nominees for the best in cinema from 2018. Could Toni Collette sneak in for “Hereditary”? What about Ethan Hawke for “First Reformed”? And what on Earth is going to win Best Picture NOW?!?! Let’s break down the major categories and we’ll come back the day before the nominations with a full, final prediction list.
"Roma" / Netflix
BEST PICTURE
Is it possible there are only two locks here? Two films that everyone agrees are certainly going to be nominated? At this point in the typical Oscar season, we can usually define six to seven locks but there’s a giant gray area under the agreed-upon two films most likely to win this prize: “A Star is Born” and “Roma.”
What happens after you pencil those in? “Vice” seemed very likely after the love from the Academy for “The Big Short” and how well its subject matter aligns with most voter’s political leanings, but critics weren’t exactly kind to the film. Speaking of films that audiences (and possibly voters) seem to be embracing more than critics, the two Globe winners have to at least be considered “possible,” with most predicting “Green Book” gets in. Some are still fighting the “Bohemian Rhapsody” nod, but the film's immense popularity and Globe win will undeniably give it some steam. If it doesn't get a BP nod, it would be the first Best Picture Drama winner from the Globes to miss since 1963, and that's when there were only five slots. I think it gets in. That’s five, which is technically all they have to nominate, but there will likely be at least eight.
What’s left? Could “Black Panther” be the first Marvel movie nominated for Best Picture? I’m almost tempted to move this to the locked tier (although the lack of an editing nomination from the guild is weird), so I think so. “BlacKkKlansman” has done well all awards season and I truly believe Spike Lee is getting a Best Director nod, and that will help push it into this group as well. Another strong contender in other categories in “The Favourite” means it likely rides the support into the big one.
Do they stop at eight? Maybe. Call it hopeful thinking, but I’m not giving up on “If Beale Street Could Talk” yet. I just can’t.
“Black Panther” “BlacKkKlansman” “Bohemian Rhapsody” “The Favourite” “Green Book” “If Beale Street Could Talk” “Roma” “A Star is Born” “Vice”
On the bubble: “Crazy Rich Asians,” “First Man,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” “A Quiet Place”
Bradley Cooper, "A Star is Born" / Warner Bros. Pictures
BEST DIRECTOR
If “Roma” and “A Star is Born” are the frontrunners to win Best Picture, their directors are likely to appear here. It also feels like the Academy is going to take this chance to finally nominate Spike Lee, almost three decades later for the egregious snub for his work on “Do the Right Thing.” That’s three that feel like locks. After that? It gets hazy. This category almost always consists of five directors from the Picture line-up as its hard to have enough support to appear here but not in Picture. We can rule out the committee that directed “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which leaves Yorgos Lanthimos, Barry Jenkins, Ryan Coogler, Peter Farrelly, and Adam McKay. “Vice” and “If Beale Street Could Talk” are sliding away while Farrelly’s GG speech is likely to be in voters' minds. As crazy as it will make some people, I think he’s in. And I believe that the hit Marvel movie "Black Panther" is going to be a much bigger part of this year’s nominees than some of my colleagues, so I’m going with Coogler.
Ryan Coogler, “Black Panther” Bradley Cooper, “A Star is Born” Alfonso Cuaron, “Roma” Peter Farrelly, “Green Book” Spike Lee, “BlacKkKlansman”
On the bubble: Yorgos Lanthimos, "The Favourite"; Barry Jenkins, "If Beale Street Could Talk"; Adam McKay, "Vice"; Damien Chazelle, "First Man"
Rami Malek, "Bohemian Rhapsody" / 20th Century Fox
BEST ACTOR
Let’s start with who has been winning key precursor awards. This week, Christian Bale and Rami Malek took home Golden Globes, merely cementing their locked status. It would be a shock if either of them missed here, and I expect one of them to be the Oscar winner. Academy members love it when actors play real people. Six of the last eight winners were for biopics. We can likely add either Dick Cheney or Freddie Mercury to the list that includes Winston Churchill, Stephen Hawking, and Abraham Lincoln.
But who will be “honored just to be nominated”? The “Green Book” love will almost certainly push in both performers in the film. If Farrelly is getting a director nod, no way Mortensen and Ali miss. Similarly, love for “A Star is Born” pushes Bradley Cooper in here too, leaving only one spot open. I’m going to be the optimist and say that in a shallow field of contenders, the critical darling of the awards season, Ethan Hawke, is getting in. If you look at the incredible number of critics awards he’s won this year, it would be kind of shocking if he doesn’t.
Christian Bale, “Vice” Bradley Cooper, “A Star is Born” Ethan Hawke, “First Reformed” Rami Malek, “Bohemian Rhapsody” Viggo Mortensen, “Green Book”
On the bubble: Ryan Gosling, "First Man"; Willem Dafoe, "At Eternity's Gate"; John David Washington, "BlacKkKlansman"
Glenn Close, "The Wife" / Sony Pictures Classics
BEST ACTRESS
Both winners on Golden Globe Sunday—Olivia Colman & Glenn Close—gave phenomenal speeches and received rapturous applause, and the Oscar winner will almost certainly be one of them. They are locks.
Who fills out the category? Her hardcore fans may be unhappy that Close stole her Golden Globe but there’s so much love for Lady Gaga that she feels like a lock too. As does Melissa McCarthy, a well-liked actress and former nominee playing against type. The Academy has always loved when comedic performers switch to drama. She’s in.
The fifth nominee could be a number of people, but the widespread love for “Roma” feels like it could carry in Yalitza Aparicio. What do foreign-language Best Picture nominees like “Il Postino,” “Life is Beautiful” and “Amour” all have in common? They all got an acting nomination too.
Yalitza Aparicio, “Roma” Glenn Close, “The Wife” Olivia Colman, “The Favourite” Lady Gaga, “A Star is Born” Melissa McCarthy, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
On the bubble: Toni Collette, "Hereditary"; Emily Blunt, "A Quiet Place"
Mahershala Ali, "Green Book" / Universal Pictures
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
This may be the category on nominations morning where we see the most surprises. A lot like Best Picture after its top two maybes, it feels like there’s a hazy, gray field aside from the pair of locks of Mahershala Ali and Richard E. Grant. One of those two are winning.
Who fills out the category? Does “Vice” still have enough support to push in Sam Rockwell or even Steve Carell? Speaking of Carell, do enough people remember “Beautiful Boy” to still vote for Timothée Chalamet? Sam Elliott missed with the HFPA, does he miss here? Adam Driver keeps popping up for “BlacKkKlansman.” Could this lead to the first Oscar nod for Kylo Ren? And, speaking of blockbusters, was there a better performance in one this year than Michael B. Jordan?
Mahershala Ali, “Green Book” Timothée Chalamet, “Beautiful Boy” Adam Driver, “BlacKkKlansman” Richard E. Grant, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” Michael B. Jordan, “Black Panther”
On the bubble: Sam Elliott, "A Star is Born"; Sam Rockwell, "Vice"
Regina King, "If Beale Street Could Talk" / Annapurna Pictures
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Possibly the thinnest category of the year, this may be the one in which there is universal agreement on the final five just due to lack of competition. Regina King, despite missing a SAG nomination, still feels like the frontrunner, especially after a great Globes speech. And it’s pretty clear now that both ladies from “The Favourite” are getting in, even if you think their being here is a bit of category fraud. It’s a very well-liked film and they’re both former winners. Amy Adams is going to land her sixth nomination, and first since “American Hustle,” for her portrayal of Lynne Cheney. Count on it. And this is the place where a film once considered a frontrunner in categories like Best Picture and Best Director will finally get an above-the-line nomination for the excellent Claire Foy.
Amy Adams, “Vice” Claire Foy, “First Man” Regina King, “If Beale Street Could Talk” Emma Stone, “The Favourite” Rachel Weisz, “The Favourite”
On the bubble: Nicole Kidman, "Boy Erased"; Michelle Yeoh, "Crazy Rich Asians"
We’ll do all the categories in a final predictions piece on January 21st, the morning before the nominations are announced.
