chan grew up with pretty much anything he could have ever wanted, and was easily one of those kids that received a brand new car on his sixteenth birthday. he graduated from palo alto high school in may of 2012, and it’s no surprise that he ended up attending stanford, where he got a degree in philosophy and religious studies. he graduated in 2016.

he didn’t necessarily like the degree that he was getting, but he did it to appease his parents ( by simply getting a degree ) and his grandfather ( who just so happens to be a priest in busan ). sunday is a really important day in his family, and despite his currently insane schedule, he always goes to palo alto to attend church with his parents at least once in a month.

while on summer vacation in bora bora with some friends from college in 2013, chan’s social media following really blew up. he went from about 25k to 175k seemingly overnight after sharing his escapades on instagram, and became a sensation.

chan had a few friends who were studying photography / videography, so once she semester struck back up in 2013, he decided that it was time to “build his brand”.

it turned out to be a good idea because by the time he graduated from stanford in 2016, chan’s instagram follower count had grown up to 1.3m and he left palo alto for los angeles. he made a professional portfolio, and signed to img models in december of 2016. chan made his first runway appearance with the star-studded dolce & gabbana fall/winter 17/18 men’s fashion show; he walked a total of 27 shows during nyfw and 54 shows during the entirety of fashion month.

Bien qu’il ait déjà 4 albums à son actif, appelé Identify (2014), Moriagatteyo (2016), Flight Log: Turbulence (2016) et Present: You (2018), il veut aller plus loin dans sa carrière en se dirigeant également vers la comédie et la mode. Sa participation à l’émission Law of the Jungle est prometteuse et ses innombrables engagements dans la mode pour des magazines comme Vogue, Arena Homme+, GQ, Grazia, Dazed et Nylon prouvent que son intérêt pour d’autres formes d’art est fortement attendu. Tout semble être une progression naturelle. A 27 ans, Mark continue d’apprendre et de s’améliorer et, quand vous vous déplacez comme Mark, c’est plus facile de garder le silence avec l’assurance de ce que vous avez pour vous et de laisser votre travail parler pour vous.

Bonjour Mark, comment vas-tu ? Qu’est-ce qui te tient occupé dernièrement ?

Je vais vraiment bien. Dernièrement, je joue aux jeux vidéos et je regarde la télé à la maison. J’essaye juste de rester actif cette année.

2020 a été une année intense. Tu es connu comme quelqu’un qui aime rester à la maison. Comment le confinement a-t-il affecté tes activités ?

Je suis d’accord. 2020 a été une année folle. Mais pour quelqu’un comme moi qui aime rester à la maison, ça n’a pas été si dur. Les choses que je fais à la maison sont regarder la télé et jouer sur mon ordinateur alors ça ne m’a pas trop affecté. J’espère que tout le monde restera sain et sauf pendant cette période.

Qu’est-ce que tu prévois de faire cet hiver et pour les vacances ?

Je pense que cet hiver, pour les vacances, nous n’aurons pas beaucoup de temps libre. Il n’y a rien de planifié pour le moment mais nous ne sommes jamais sûrs jusqu’à ce mois-là.

Quelles expériences t’ont amenées à être plus empathique envers les personnes de ton environnement géographique ?

Venir en Corée m’a en réalité beaucoup changé. Je pense que venir ici a beaucoup joué. De plus, je m’adapte plutôt rapidement à l’environnement où je suis.

En tant qu’américain avec un héritage chinois et coréen, comment est-ce que tu rassembles ces influences dans ton travail ?

En tant qu’américain avec un héritage chinois, je pense que ça m’a beaucoup aidé dans mon travail. Ça m’a beaucoup aidé à tisser des liens avec les fans dans le monde parce que je suis capable de m’exprimer plus facilement. De plus, c’est aussi plus facile pour moi de faire des chansons dans différentes langues pour que mes fans les apprécient.

Tu as également fait des acrobaties et des arts martiaux. Quels sont tes intérêts, tes hobbies et tes inspirations en dehors du travail ?

Oui, on m’a fait prendre beaucoup de leçons lorsque j’étais encore trainee mais j’ai vraiment apprécié cette expérience et je n’ai jamais vu ça comme une leçon ou un cours. Depuis que je suis jeune, j’aime beaucoup bouger et faire du sport. En venant en Corée, je n’avais pas beaucoup d’endroits où je pouvais faire des activités que j’aimais alors j’imagine que mes hobbies en ce moment sont des jeux en ligne. Haha.

A quoi ressemble ton processus créatif ?

Je ne suis pas une personne qui arrive directement en studio avec des choses. Je dois y réfléchir pendant des heures, peut-être des jours pour avoir quelque chose. Mais quand j’entends une chanson, je l’écoute plusieurs fois et je réfléchis à quel sujet ou quel thème j’ai envie d’aborder. A partir de ce moment, je réfléchis à une mélodie et des paroles. Ça peut me prendre plusieurs jours pour écrire quelques lignes.

On a appris que tu avais passé plusieurs années au Paraguay et au Brésil. Donne-nous un aperçu de ce qu’était ta vie avant de déménager en Corée du Sud.

Après ma naissance aux Etats-Unis, nous avons déménagé au Brésil puis au Paraguay. J’ai passé toute mon enfance là-bas mais je ne me rappelle pas beaucoup de choses. Après ça, je suis retourné aux Etats-Unis et je suis entré au jardin d’enfants. Je suis allé jusqu’au 10ème grade (*équivalent de la 2nde en France) avant de déménager en Corée et j’ai commencé le prochain chapitre de ma vie.

Qu’est-ce qui rend Séoul excitant ?

J’aime vraiment manger de la nourriture coréenne ! Et savoir qu’il y a beaucoup de magasins ouverts après minuit est très excitant parce que, dès que j’ai faim après minuit, je peux toujours commander.

Tu as fait beaucoup de photoshoots et de campagnes de mode, comment décrirais-tu ton aesthetic ?

En réalité, je ne sais pas comment je décrirais mon aesthetic. J’essaye d’essayer des concepts et des looks différents à chaque fois que je fais un photoshoot. Je pense que faire ça m’a mis dans une position où je peux essayer différent style et ça ne rend pas étrange sur moi. Ce n’est que ma façon de penser et mon opinion ! Haha.

Comment es-tu entré dans le monde de la musique ?

J’aimais beaucoup écouter de la musique avant de venir en Corée. Mais c’est quand je suis arrivé ici et que j’ai commencé à prendre des leçons de chant et de danse que je m’y suis vraiment plongé. De plus, après avoir débuté, je me suis plus impliqué et j’ai commencé à produire des chansons avec les autres producteurs. Je pense qu’il y a encore beaucoup de choses à apprendre mais plus les années passent, plus je m’implique de plus en plus dans la musique.

Quelle est la chose la plus belle et la plus difficile à propos d’être dans GOT7 ? Comment tu gères la pression ?

La chose la plus belle et la plus difficile est d’avoir six autres membres. C’est vraiment bien de les avoir parce que nous sommes toujours là les uns pour les autres. Même si parfois nous ne sommes pas d’accord sur quelque chose, nous pouvons compter les uns sur les autres. Savoir qu’il y a 6 autres personnes qui vont m’encourager et que je vais les encourager à mon tour rend les choses beaucoup plus faciles. Ce n’est pas une compétition mais vous sentez que vous ne voulez pas être le moins bon du groupe et ça vous motive à travailler plus dur et à faire mieux.

How to do justice to an incredible site overlooking Killcare Beach and Bouddi National Park? Design an equally spectacular home. 

Drawing on the location and design of the new house by Square Design, Decus Interiors have created a special interior scheme more than worthy of the home’s prized position. 

The brief was for a home suitable for regular entertaining, adopting a textured yet practical style referencing the clients’ love of travel.

Initially brought in to curate the decoration only, Decus were eventually engaged to imagine the entire interior fit out, including floor and wall finishes, hardware, and window treatments. 

The resulting home contains free-flowing spaces, each with their own distinct aesthetic facilitated by textured materials and vibrant art. 

‘We took references directly from our clients’ love for travel – each year venturing to the Italian Alps – as well as their love for France,’ says Alexandra Donohoe Church, founder and managing director at Decus Interiors. ‘While it technically is a beach house, we wanted to make it as un-beachy as possible.’

The use of rich, layered materials not only plays into this aesthetic, but provides more of a lived-in feel not always found in new builds. ‘It was important for our clients to feel like their home had been there for years, rather than feeling overly new or polished’ says Alexandra.

These materials range from contemporary finishes like polished concrete and stacked stone, to steel framed windows, bronze mesh joinery, and reclaimed timber flooring and bathroom tiles. 

‘At the time of this build we experimented a lot with stone, in particular the Concordia stone from Artedomus in the kitchen, and this enabled us to create a unique space for each room,’ says Alexandra. ‘We also worked with textured wall coverings, such as the deep blue Phillip Jeffries hemp wallpaper.’ 

In contrast to the materiality, the colour palette, furniture, and soft furnishings directly respond to the home’s vistas of Bouddi National Park and the coast beyond.

‘As a studio, we love experimenting with opposing elements for a sense of polarity,’ says Alexandra of this juxtaposition. ‘There’s something intangible but powerful about injecting a little tension and the unexpected into every design.’

What takes this home to the next level is the addition of unexpected moments throughout, including a wine cellar hidden behind an invisible joinery panel, and en suite entrance concealed within the library joinery.
