I genuinely do not understand the appeal of about 90% of cartoons, especially American animation. I love Studio Ghibli and I love Fantastic Mr. Fox, and I enjoyed Bojack Horseman quite a bit, actually, but I have trouble thinking of animated shows that don’t feel stilted, pandering and/or obnoxious.

Maybe it’s because I grew up only being allowed to watch classic movies and older animation (my favorite movies as a kid were My Neighbor Totoro, Easter Parade and The Aristocats), but a lot of the stuff that I see big fandoms for now just seems oversaturated and annoying when I try to watch it. The super over the top voice acting, characters constantly over-explaining their emotions, the “we’re teaching our younger audience a moral lesson” moments, etc. I just don’t get it.

I’ve tried to watch Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, Adventure Time, Powerpuff Girls, She-ra, ATLA, The Dragon Prince, Disenchantment, etc etc. A lot of my friends have showed me animated series in the past the only one that stuck was Over The Garden Wall (which I loved.)

I’m not trying to attack any of the shows mentioned above, I’m just genuinely curious. What makes this style so appealing? I get that escapism is part of it, but that gets lost on me when the animation syle is so in-your-face over the top or the show is so blunt with its morals.

I’m all for animation as a genre and there is stylized stuff I love (Aggretsuko, A Town Called Panic, Cowboy Bebop), but I feel like there must be something I’m missing with all these super popular shows that do nothing for me.

Have you ever tried to draw yourself with different syles (disney, adventure time, steven universe, gravity falls etc etc)?

I did! But it always feels kinda weird for some reason, like i can adapt other characters into other styles but when its on myself it feels like im putting an itchy dress
