glædelig sankthans! may we have plenty of rain so next years celebrations can take place in a more fitting fashion than now and may your nights be bright and healthy and may the few fires that are allowed to burn bring a bit more peace to the world
#vi elsker vort land. men ved midsommer mest <3#og mod ufredens ånd vil vi bålet på fædrenes gravhøje tænde#very sad about the burning prohibition keeping us from properly celebrating#own post#love the mid summer celebration. this is what danish summer feels like. warm and breezy and with a bright sky even well after 10 at night

The Midsummer Song is seriously one of my favorite songs ever written in Danish. So many good and sometimes just raw lines in there.
Verse 1:
We love our land
When the blessed yule
Lights the star on the tree with a gleam in every eye
When in spring every bird
Over field, under coast
Lets its voice bend into greeting trills
We sing your law
Over field, over street
We frame your name in wreaths when our harvest is secure
But the most beautiful wreath will be your Sankthans
It can be found where the hearts don't grow cold with doubt
But the most beautiful wreath will be your Sankthans
It can be found where the hearts don't grow cold with doubt
Verse 2:
We love our land
But by midsummer most
When every cloud over the field sends a blessing
When flowers are most abundant
And when the cattle in yoke
Give the most plentiful gift to hard-working hands
When we're not ploughing and harrowing and rolling
When the cow is chewing its midday meal in the clover
That's when the youth learn to dance
Sankthans, Sankthans
Like the foal and the lamb freely stumbling in play over the meadow
That's when the youth learn to dance
Sankthans, Sankthans
Like the foal and the lamb freely stumbling in play over the meadow
Verse 3:
We love our land
And with sword in hand
Shall every otherworldy enemy prepare to know us
But against the spirit of war
Over field, under shore
Will we light this bonfire on our forefathers' burial mounds
Every town has its witch and every parish has its trolls
We will keep them from life with fires of joy
We will work for peace here in this land
Sankthans, Sankthans
It can be found where the hearts don't grow cold with doubt
We will work for peace here in this land
Sankthans, Sankthans
It can be won where the hearts don't grow cold with doubt
It's not quite as powerful in English, but the second verse would always bring me to tears as a kid. There's just something comforting about comparing awkward dancing youths to clumsy baby animals.
And while the original Drachmann version is of course fine, Shubidua's melody is and will always be the best:
youtube
It's not a very old song, but we've been singing it every summer for almost 100 years, so it might as well be an ancient hymn. It's very dear to me.
#Denmark#Danmark#Danish#Dansk#dni if you translate it as ''we love our country'' tho we don't need /that/ kind of nationalism#ja det skal være 'gravhøje' ikke 'gravhunde' don't @ me i will fight you

tygger drov i fniset tilstand
tager mørkets tilstand med oprejst pande
nydelsen bræder sig i magtfulde ryk
finder magten i den vilde viden
fornemmelser bidrager til mere i nuet´s smil
trækker de glade minder frem
griner fjoget fra hukommelsens D&D
tiden der var
genskabt af mørkets opsugende elskov
kalder på mig selv
knalder mig selv i Dissernes håndsrækning
husker mig på hvad jeg er
hvor jeg kommer fra
hvem jeg er blevet
husker ord sagt af bitterhed
elsker nattens elskov
åhh du dystre side i mig
før mig derhen hvor afmagt er u fortiet
lad mig danse hen over gravhøje
i gyldne drømme griber jeg nuet`s kærtegn
så blide og små
omfavner jeg magiens indre lys i mig
giver mig hen til musikens elskov
mørke skygger betag mig
