WIP Wednesday: I’m Wonderstruck
New Britin Fic. 11.5k words. AU: Alternate Meeting
This is an excerpt of a fic I’m almost finished writing and working to get it uploaded to AO3.
Synopsis: Justin needs an internship to finish his graphic design degree from PIFA. His friend Lindsay recommends he apply at Vanguard because her best friend is the managing partner there. Upon their first interaction Justin is certain Mr. Kinney wants to fire him. But does he?
I haven’t done a WIP Wednesday in a while so I thought I’d give it a shot.
Justin had been hoping he wouldn’t have to speak to Mr. Kinney about returning to Vanguard. But, the universe just loved to mock him. Luckily, Justin knew he could count on Mr. Kinney making an appearance at Lindsay and Mel’s after work. Ever since Justin temporarily moved in, Mr. Kinney, he supposed he should probably start calling him Brian outside of work, dropped by daily to check on Justin under the guise of dropping off Gus or coming to play with his son.
Sure enough, a few moments later, Justin heard voices downstairs and the front door closing. Then, just as he was putting away his coursework, the door to the guest bedroom opened and a blur of limbs came rushing in. Soon enough, Justin was attacked by the thin, spindly arms and legs of Gus. At four years old the child was already a ball of energy and excitement.
“Justin! Mommy said that you were feeling better and that I could come hug you again!” Gus exclaimed as he wrapped his arms around Justin’s chest while the rest of his body rested in Justin’s lap.
“I am! It’s good to see you Goofy Gus. Mommy told me that you kept wanting to give me medicine when I was sleeping.” Justin laughed and smiled down at the rambunctious child he adored.
“Yeah, but mommy said that you needed your rest to feel better. And now you are! Can Gus give you medicine now?” Gus jumped off Justin’s lap and danced around the room.
Justin laughed, “Sure. Let’s go downstairs to see what you can give me.”
Gus shot like a rocket out of the room ahead of Justin, who was moving more slowly. His body was still getting used to being up and mobile for extended periods of time. After a week and a half of being bedridden, he still tired easily, but he was definitely on the mend and ready to get back to work. As soon as they arrived in the front room of the house, Justin’s gaze fell upon Brian.
The brunet stood up from the couch the minute Justin walked in. He smiled tentatively at Justin and gathered Gus into his arms, halting the boy from rushing past and into the kitchen. Gus wiggled and begged to be put down, insisting that he needed to get Justin some medicine. Justin moved to the chair near the entryway and sat down. He leaned his head back and closed his eyes momentarily.
“Justin, if you need to rest you can go back to your room. You don’t have to entertain Gus if it’s too much.” Lindsay chimed up, forcing Justin to open his eyes.
“Nah. I’m fine. I just forgot that my body is still recovering energy levels so the stairs almost took me out.” Justin laughed.
Gus finally got free and ran to the kitchen before his mommy or daddy could stop him. Justin let his eyes follow the smaller child until he was out of sight. Once he was gone completely, Justin sat up and gave his boss his full attention.
“So, I just got off the phone with Murph. I told him I would be ready to come back to work part-time on Thursday. He said company policy was it had to be ran by you first.” Justin locked his eyes on Brian’s daring him to object.
“No.” Brian smirked and quirked his eyebrow.
“Brian!” Lindsay exclaimed before Justin could process that he’d been denied.
“Excuse me? I figured it was just a formality. I’ve been awake since 8am, my cough is practically gone. I’m ready to come back.” Justin argued, determined to not lose this internship with the finish line in sight.
“No. You won’t be coming back. Your internship is finished.” Brian shrugged his shoulders and locked his gaze onto Justin’s, daring him to fight him further.
“Seriously? You’re going to deny me the one thing I need to graduate just as I was finishing my requirements?” Justin stood up and threw his hands in the air.
“Mr. Taylor.” Mr. Kinney’s words came out evenly, the picture of professionalism, “I called IFA and told them the situation with your pneumonia and asked them if a 3-month internship was equivalent to their written requirement of one semester. Your professor stated that it was enough to earn you credit. Congratulations you’re done.”
“So, I’m not fired. You’re just ending my internship early.” Justin sat back down, the fight leaving him immediately.
“For the sake of your health?” Brian paused and then shrugged, “Yes.”
“Okay well, then on Thursday I will come by the office and gather my personal effects from my workstation.” Justin looked from his former boss and Lindsay. “If that’s allowed.”
“It won’t be necessary. I can bring them by tomorrow when I drop off Gus.” Brian shrugged again and sat back against the cushions of the couch.
“Why bother? Why not just wait until I go back to my dorm and then give them to Lindsay. That way you won’t have to deal with me anymore. Which is clearly what you want.” Justin felt his frustration rising with all the mixed signals Brian kept giving him.
“Justin.” Lindsay said evenly. Clearly trying to warn him against making an idiot of himself.
“Did I say I never wanted to see you again?” Brian leaned forward once more. “All I said was that I ended your internship early so you could focus on recovering from pneumonia. I apologize for being kind.”
“You’re not sorry.” Justin snipped at Brian, his gaze daring the man to own up to his true intentions under everything he’d done for Justin over the past few weeks.
“This is why I don’t mix business with pleasure.” Brian stood up and gave Lindsay a glare before grabbing his coat and started to put it back on.
Justin was thoroughly confused at this point. “What?”
Brian came over and grabbed Justin’s cheek, tilting his head up, “I ended your internship out of kindness as well as selfishness.” Then he closed the gap between them, placing his lips on Justin’s in a bruising kiss.
When he pulled away, Justin couldn’t breathe. He’d hoped that Brian’s behavior toward him was leading to this, but he never imagined it would actually happen.
“Fuck you. Why couldn’t you just tell me you’re interested in me like a normal person?” Justin gasped as his breath returned.
Lindsay let out a spark of laughter at that comment. “He’s got you there, Brian.”
“Until 10 minutes ago I was your boss. I couldn’t exactly ask for more from you when it could be misconstrued in the workplace. The admins at Vanguard are the most gossipy bunch of heteros I’ve ever seen in my life. The rumors would’ve flown almost immediately because somehow my assistant always knows everything.” Brian stepped back from Justin, breaking any physical contact the two still had.
“Okay. So, what does this mean?” Justin needed clear cut details if he had any chance of keeping ahold of his sanity.
“It means I don’t do dates, but I’m down to fuck anytime.” Brian shrugged and smirked as Gus came rushing back into the room with a popsicle.
“Here’s your medicine Justin! Momma Mel said you probably need this for your sore throat.” Gus shoved the treat into Justin’s hand.
“Yeah, probably.” Justin said in a distracted tone.
“The art is mine.” Justin stated as Brian turned to go.
The older man paused, turned around, and glanced between Justin and Lindsay trying to make sense of what had just been said. Lindsay shrugged her shoulders and then silently urged Justin to continue with a nudge of her head.
“The art in your office. It’s mine.” Justin clarified, his heart pounding in his chest.
Brian abandoned his attempts at leaving and walked back over to Justin. His questioning gaze raked over Justin’s body before coming to rest on his lips. He slowly reached forward and placed his fingers in Justins blond locks.
“I didn’t know you paint. It’s a very calming piece. It’s why I bought it.”
“Yeah, I don’t paint often because school and life keep me busy. But, I made that one so I could get some extra money to sustain me during my internship when I couldn’t work any overnight shifts at the diner.” Justin’s voice was breathless as Brian’s touch electrified every nerve in his body.
“So, I did pay you for the internship after all.” Brian smirked. “I was starting to feel guilty that it was an unpaid internship considering all the stellar work you did for Vanguard.”
“I guess you did.” Justin ducked his head to hide his smile. Brian moved his hand to his chin and pulled his face back up.
“I’d ask you to my place, but I don’t want to move too fast.”
“Who’s making assumptions now? You think because I’m from the country club types that I’m not down to have a quick fuck?” Justin laughed and then pulled Brian down for another kiss.
“What are we waiting for then? I’ve been waiting to do this since your first day at Vanguard.” Brian growled under his breath once they broke from their kiss.
“Guess this means I can’t apply for the open position in the art department once I graduate in the spring.” Justin laughed and pulled back from Brian completely.
Brian didn’t respond instead he gave a vague shrug and pulled Justin’s hand to drag the blond with him out the door. Justin grabbed his coat from the hook by the door on their way out.
“Jesus, Mr. Kinney are you trying to kill me?” Justin groaned as he struggled to move toward Brian’s Jeep and put on his coat at the same time.
“Keep calling me Mr. Kinney and we won’t make it to my place.” Brian devoured Justin’s lips once again.

Sorry if you haven’t heard from me, whoever’s waiting to hear from me. May was hard. May was Captain of a lot of things that didn’t feel so good. I watched a lot of Shetland & one night made brownies from the box. I think it was the same night, oh dear. It all goes flashing down the rear. May was like, “how is it possible the flowers can bloom when I feel like this, So pointless, aimless, out of wack And unretrieved or left behind, How is it all coming up as I’m going down, Shouldn’t we, as nature, be in a tandem dance.” May, I was alone a lot and felt it. Though that is nature – up and down in tandem, Good and bad in the same exquisite sandwich. I take a bite. Cloudy day. I’m just in it. Glad to be in it – I love the thorn in the rose bush as that’s what makes it rose bush.
I’m in Nova Scotia, baby, it’s my first time here. Flew in from Toronto with my sister (not twin, who is in Italy) and my cousin. It only took 1 hour and 44 minutes in the air to get somewhere I’d never been in my life. We are here for my birthday on Monday but also because BenIsHerFriend.
Cold air out here, no? Walking into the tiny shack where we’re staying my sister said about the cold, “I can feel it in my bones.” But the air is fresh and sparkly green. Green everywhere. Green landing. I brought a book – never let me go by Kazuo – but I probably won’t touch it, I just don’t have those kinds of eyes at the minute. Staying in a boat shack in LaHave, as I somewhat mentioned, which is an hour twenty-minute drive out from Halifax. The highway, if that’s what it is, is very nice, grey and bordered in tall trees, a thrumming yellow-green embroidery. We didn’t rent a Jeep Wrangler but that’s what the car rental place had for us after losing (?) our original car and having us waiting near an hour for its replacement. It was a fine wait, huddled at a high bar table in the airport with English breakfast tea and a morning glory muffin. And we got a cool Jeep at the end. I felt like this was special, because we’ve always wanted to drive in a big hulking Jeep machine in a space with nice, open skies. Hopefully the weather will warm to the point we can take the roof off and if it doesn’t, maybe we’ll do it anyway and shiver for a bit of time.
Today, though, today I’m sodamntired but coffee isn’t helping. Do you ever have something to do that you just can’t fucking do? So it just runs in your brain as something you’ve GOTTA do! It’s not all bad. I enjoyed a cheese croissant and two lemony dolmas for lunch which was great, and lemon loaf for lunch-dessert. Rain glides in the air, and on these blustery days, a note of lemon cracking through does real business.
Also – I got a Graphic Design internship! With an animation festival in Ottawa. It’s virtual, forty hours a week and starts tomorrow and runs until the first day of September. I’ll be helping design the festival book. Maybe in the fall will drive to Ottawa to meet them all in person / attend a few of the shows. But this means I’ll have to lower my hours on the island, so hopefully that’s cool. Otherwise, I’ll quit the island. That could only have been a summer job anyway.
Tomorrow, will visit Lunenberg :•)

Graphic designer here! I also had trouble finding internships and I ended up having to just send resumes directly to local design/marketing agencies (even though they didn’t say they had any internships open) until someone finally accepted me lol
I think I’ll have to do just that indeed! I had NO idea it was this hard to find an internship in this area, I think I’ve found my vet school one pretty much as soon as I submitted my résumé to the “internships near you” website, heh. Granted, that was a good… ten years ago or so.

Reflection and Restart
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wish I could just leave a voice note instead of typing this out, but anyway.
My name is Kruti, I am 21. I am a graphic designer or more like wanna be graphic designer. I am preparing for my dream design uni while working for an internship and doing freelance work. It was my birthday week. last sunday I turned 21. Looking back I had great time and made lots of memories, not just on that day but the previous entire year too. I have come really far. but somehow no where near to where I want to go. I always wanted to do a lot of creative things ever since the beginning. I even started planning everything out last year. I was preparing for my dream design uni and I planned out everything I needed to do to get me where I wanted to be. But I just didn't. For some reason, I got lazy, made tons of excuses and I didn't do anything at all. I still have come farther than I was last year, but have not done even a single thing I thought I wanted to do. Yesterday I just got tired of all the excuses. I have been missing deadlines on both the major projects and people were just losing faith in me. this was the last thing I ever wanted to do. I realized I am here because I chose this path. I wanted this. I enjoyed this. I wanted to learn so many things and do so many things out of curosity and not worry about how much effort it will take me, but instead I gave up every single time the task required even a little more effort than the usual things. I started taking weeks for the things that I could easily do in hours. I never understood why I did that. But all I wanted to do was DO THINGS than just THINKING ABOUT THEM. I mean what is the point of having great ideas if they are not executed. So once again I am here starting a 100 days challenge. A 100 days challenge where I push myself to every limit I have. And produce the work I always wanted to produce. Because I owe it to myself. My younger self, and my older self. I think I have really good potential and I have been wasting it till now. So hopefully I wont do that anymore. Will keep you guys updated from tomorrow.

Entry 6: Career aspirations including goal setting
When thinking about my future career aspirations and goals, there are a few objectives that are in my sight. I would like to become involved in a communications role, overseeing social media, public relations, and customer engagement. I enjoy interacting with people, and am a social person, so I believe that I will thrive in a role like this. This is also similar to my current volunteer role at the Bentleigh Football Netball Club, where I am the social media and communications coordinator. I have enjoyed my time in this role and aim to fulfill a similar role at a professional organisation in a full-time capacity. The enjoyment I have more communications has also led me to enjoy the marketing aspect of media, and I would like to gain professional marketing experience to support my knowledge.
I also have digital content creation and design in my future plans. At my internship at DSR, I thrived in the creative tasks where I was creating and designing graphics and images, and editing the videos for the organisation’s media platforms. Because of this, I have gained confidence in this area, and it is something I developed a deep passion for. DSR allowed me to develop my skills and apply them in a professional, time-pressured environment. Following the conclusion of my internship with DSR, I am now doing freelance work for them in digital content creation and design. This has led me to the idea of possibly starting my own business in the near future.
After working with the Skills and Jobs Centre at Holmesglen, I have now built a strong resume to begin my career. After building on the existing resume that I had, I was able to expand and add detail to better reflect my skills, achievements, and my aspirations. This was an important step for me, as my resume had not been updated in a few years and was updated to reflect my current abilities.

My resume. (Royal, 2023).
Through these workshops, we learnt that a resume should only be two to three pages long (Gary, 2023), and should be customised and targeted to each position (Kellie, 2023; Welton & Moody, 2023). Using key words (Welton & Moody, 2023) and having important, relevant information at the top is also essential, as this can increase the chances of progressing to the interview stage of the application (Gary, 2023). Including a statement is also a necessary section (Kellie, 2023), which is something I did not have on my resume before. My resume, interviewing skills and career objectives have been developed and I feel ready to begin applying for relative positions.

UX Design is one such course that helps in discovering products, most commonly apps and websites, that are basic to utilize, help the end-users. It also understands the needs of the utilizer and how they actually gain what they desire. It’s the means through which the utilizers can interact with the information and how they navigate your design. The reason why the course is in such high demand is that not all people who have done graphic designing have genuinely understood what’s involved. Context: 2012, pt. 3
Reaping What We Sowed
With the summer came FWB's graduation from our college. There's a picture of his friends and him in their graduation caps and me tacked awkwardly onto the side, visibly out of place yet desperately trying to belong. I'm not going to share it because everything that happens next I have an incredible well of shame about, even ten years later, and so I don't want to tie any of their faces to it.
Following his graduation, FWB was listless--lost--and a depression that had always lurked around the edges got its claws in him and latched on. He took a job as a barback at an unremarkable bar in downtown Boston and proceeded to steadily run out of money. He often worked until the AM, and the cost of a cab ride home generally destroyed whatever his pay for the day had been; it was the restaurant industry in America, after all. He was making much less than minimum wage.
This escalated steadily and, at the same time, a tension grew between us that made me anxious and jumpy. There's a particular feeling that overtakes a relationship when its end is nearing, and it was that feeling but with an added layer of resolute, determined denial on my part.
I was desperately clinging to the idea that he and I would remain together forever. I'd been losing faith in my writing and capability at becoming a writer for a long while, and I was looking toward the publishing industry as the means by which I'd sustain myself; that was why I chose a major that involved a publishing focus, you see.
During the summer of 2012, I did an internship at a publisher that no longer exists which did hobbyist magazines. I was specifically a graphic design intern, making newsletters, ads, and other little materials under the direction of the designers putting together page layouts.
I hated it, but I'll explain why in another post. For now, it's enough to know that the internship turned me off of the entire "work in publishing" plan.... which meant I didn't have a plan as I entered my senior year of college.
I responded to that loss of direction by pinning all of my hopes on my relationship with FWB. I convinced myself that I could weather the publishing fate I'd set up for myself so long as we were together. By working in publishing, I could probably pull together enough money to sustain both of us, I reasoned, and that way he could pursue his dreams of being a writer, and I could keep being with him.
I didn't tell him about this. Ever. It was a life plan I'd invented, become fully invested in, and determined to see through entirely by myself. At the tender age of 21, I had become the archetypal Crazy Girlfriend without even noticing.
I became so convinced of this plan as an inevitable eventuality that I started to believe it was impossible for FWB and I to stop seeing each other. I began to act erratically and carelessly.
It was around this time that Boyfriend 2 messaged me out of the blue to make himself feel better after a breakup, and while I by no means gave him what he wanted, I did entertain the texts for a bit because I thought it was funny and it felt validating to be wanted after months of the tension I was pretending didn't exist in my then-current relationship. FWB was with me at the time that these texts were being exchanged--I laughingly shared them with him--and I entertained them a little too long. I remember him being displeased, but I likewise remember thinking the unhappiness I took for jealousy was silly and unnecessary: in my mind, it was obvious that there would never be anyone else for me than FWB.
The end came on a night at my apartment on which things were a bit odd between us. He was distant, and I was becoming impatient with our arrangement's lack of a name--because, in my deluded mind, our seeing other people was impossible, making the pretense that I myself had originally set up completely absurd.
I suggested we admit we were dating. He responded by ending our arrangement.
