002. BIOGRAPHY .
elias was born into a life pre - packaged and sealed tight . every inch of who he was — his personality , his future , his entire reason for being — all mapped out , stamped , signed , and delivered by his parents . they had the vision locked in … a perfect life for their one and only heir , a trophy to keep the hyun legacy immaculate . they wanted him composed , controlled , the living extension of his father . but don’t get it twisted — for all that meticulous planning , for every material thing he had , elias wasn’t exactly showered with love , wasn’t exactly overflowing with affection . this wasn’t hugs and bedtime stories … they had everything laid out , sure , but love ? real connection ? that was missing . elias was raised by a revolving door of nannies , strangers from every corner of the globe , some who didn’t even speak his language .
so , of course , he felt out of place ... like a piece that didn’t quite fit in the puzzle of his parents’ lives — always too loud , too curious , too much of everything they wished he wasn’t , too much of everything they didn’t want . he knew he wasn’t built for their legacy , wasn’t cut out for any of that high - society shit . and the older he got , the more he felt himself fading … trimming off pieces of who he was just to squeeze into the mold , just to make it easier .
his education might’ve started in new york city , close enough for his mother to yank the leash anytime he strayed … ( she’d call it “ keeping a close eye ” , but we all know what it was ) … didn’t take long , though , for her to realize managing him up close was too much … too loud , too inconvenient , too elias . so , by 11 , he was shipped off to aiglon college in switzerland — tucked away in the alps , where they figured the cold , the strictness , the distance would somehow calm him down . spoiler : didn’t work . a couple years in , and he got kicked out for launching a pop - up ski school on campus , using stolen cafeteria trays as sleds … maybe not his finest moment , but it was fun . next came le rosey — he was 14 by then , and the first thing he did ? set up an underground poker ring , high stakes and all . they let it slide once , twice … but when the dean’s daughter lost a few hundreds of swiss francs , he was out . on to harrow in england — he was 16 , deep in his bad boy phase , and had started “ whiskey wednesday ” with his friends , sneaking bottles in by hollowing out library textbooks . not a single dorm monitor wise to it — until one picked up a book , and word got out fast . within a week , he was packing up for the next school . last stop was phillips exeter in new hampshire , back in the us , with a packed schedule of sports and clubs his parents hoped would finally tire him out . and … it halfway worked .
because … he tried , he really did . tried to make them happy , like maybe , just this once , they’d actually see him — come to his soccer games or track meets , maybe cheer him on … but they never did . it was never about him — just their precious reputation , their perfect hotel empire . that’s when he gave up trying . figured if his parents didn’t care , why should he ? sure , he graduated — well , scraped through to graduation … ( with a lineup of pranks and reckless behavior that kept him just on the edge of getting booted again , but he made it out ! ) … and from there ? he played along with their plan for business school at ucla , kept the peace , got him far enough away to breathe . he made it to la , and then ? … never set foot in a single classroom . not like it was some shocker , honestly .
because , well , he blew up on tiktok . started back in high school with dumb little sketches , ( think @americanhigh on tiktok ) , and once he landed in la , jumped into comedy routines , started posting snippets of his stand - up . he's not huge - huge , but he's got a dedicated fanbase that gets his humor and earns a steady income , ( though , let's be real , his parents still cover most of his bills — the same monthly allowance , house paid for , credit card bills covered … but he's making a bit on his own , you know ? ) . so life's pretty sweet these days : sleeps till noon , plays wii tennis , swipes on raya , hooks up with celebrities who probably don't have much self - respect either , ( i mean , if they're hooking up with elias … ) , and hits the stage every so often . basically ? living his version of the dream .
003. PERSONALITY .
elias … he’s just my silly little guy , you know ? my teeny - weeny chaos magnet , my loose cannon baby boy . he’s got this rare brand of humor that’s somehow dumb and endearing all at once . funny , yeah , but the kind of funny that shouldn’t even be all that funny , you know ? zero filter between brain and mouth , too — just blurts out the wildest , most nonsensical shit . and he’s so loud , so immature , totally delusional , and a straight - up inconvenience most of the time . and that sky - high confidence — deadass convinced he’s god’s gift . i swear , he’d argue for hours if you so much as hinted he’s anything less than the hottest man alive , probably even start crying too . i’ve said it a million times , and i’ll say it again : he’s actually insane . this little guy is like a human grenade , just waiting for everyone to get close to pull his own pin for shits and giggles .
so , yeah , he’s a total mess … absolute dumpster fire if we’re being real . he’s the kind of terrible that’s somehow harmless , even a little endearing . like he’s got the heart of a kid who never quite grew out of the thrill of shaking things up just to see what happens . he’s not out here trying to hurt anyone — it’s just that he’s kind of … clueless ? like , we’re talking a grown ass man with the impulse control of a five - year - old ; no sense of boundaries , never learned from mistakes , and no idea how to apologize when he’s wrong . ( not that he’s too proud — even though he kind of is — it’s more like he doesn’t realize he might be wrong in the first place ) . it’s just endless , thoughtless behavior , because honestly , it’s all he’s ever known . and it’s frustrating , yeah , he is frustrating … but there’s something about that naivety , that stubborn innocence , that goofy sincerity — makes it really hard to hate him all the way .

Week 3: Finish Project #2 & Start Project #3

(Revised Blog Post #3)
During Week 3, we completed Project #2 and began Project #3. As stated in last week's post, Project #2 aimed to arrange various forms of type, including different fonts, sizes, and spacing, in a design space using grid methods. To find my type, I mainly referred to three different magazines. These magazines include PEOPLE Beatles 1969, 2023 Queens of Pop: Taylor Swift, and HISTORY Walt Disney. After identifying the type, it was separated into three Ziploc bags for organization. I selected three different grid methods to incorporate the text: a column grid, a hierarchical grid, and an asymmetrical grid. After creating multiple layouts, I began sketching geometric designs for each grid. The final product must demonstrate balance, contrast, and structure.
In my assessment of Project 2, I believe that the assignment does not accurately reflect my abilities as a graphic design student and that the outcome does not fulfill the assigned requirements. In reviewing my work with peers and my professor's feedback, I have learned that there are multiple ways to achieve a successful outcome on this project.
In retrospect, I noticed that my geometric design incorporated large, round shapes, which differed from the student examples. Initially, I chose to incorporate circular elements in my design to enhance its visual appeal and add some interest to it. However, in looking back on my initial idea, I realize that clean lines would have been a better choice for the assignment. Although my use of contrasting light and dark colors was prominent in my layouts, I believe that incorporating both loose and tight kerning would have enhanced the overall visual impact. Using grid paper as a starting point would have also been beneficial, as it would have enabled me to create simple shapes from the different magazines that could have represented various grid types. Then, I could have easily glued my typography onto the required black foam core.
The readings from the previous week provided a helpful background in better understanding grids, including single columns and modular grids. For example, on page 180 of Thinking with Type, the author states "The more columns you create, the more flexible the grid becomes." After reviewing this information, I have come to the realization that my perspective on grids differs significantly from what is being discussed in the textbook. Although grids are essential in any project to keep information neat and readable, it is equally important to understand how designers can take elements from column grids and use those ideas to create unique and interesting design solutions. To understand and experiment with grids is crucial for creating new and manipulating grid types.

After submitting Project #2, the Professor introduced the class to Project #3: Flowering Typography. For this project, each student is required to design at least sixteen sketches of a specific letter assigned to them by the professor. I was assigned the letter L, and after conducting additional research, I discovered that the letter L is associated with the small flower known as Lily of the Valley. This stunning, tiny bloom mainly flourishes in forested areas, such as the mountains and hills of North Carolina. I deliberately picked this flower because I found the overall outline of the flower in the picture captivating. The specific type chosen for the assignment includes Monsterrat Black and the class's color palette is called Italian primitive. As an introduction to Illustrator, this assignment aims to familiarize the class with the pen tool, which is mainly used for vectorizing the letter and its floral design.

PAST
Was born and raised in Mexico City
Her parents met one summer, eloped and after a few months together, Maribel was born.

She had little to none contact with her dad throughout her childhood. He only sent money, presents and cards.
She attended art classes since she was 4 years old and was really good at everything art related. She won every contest she ever participated in.
Ay age 11, her mom got tired or taking care of her so she sent her to live with her father to NYC
She didn’t speak English so she had to learn the language while living in NY, that made her feel out of place most of her life.
She has two half siblings; when she went to live with her dad, she found out she had re-married and divorced again, and she took care of her siblings when they stayed with their dad.
IMPORTANT FACTS
Bel didn’t go to college; instead she became a graphic designer by practicing and doing online courses
She organizes art exhibitions in unknown/new galleries or coffee shops to help fellow local small artists put their work out there and maybe get more commissions or sell their pieces.
After the break up, Bel went back to live with her father and it was really difficult for her to adapt to his lifestyle again.
She spent months fighting depression. She even looked for professional help but didn’t feel comfortable going to therapy so she stopped and instead decided to focus on her work.
She’s a freelance graphic designer which is why she can always be found working in coffee shops and diners.

Bel was born and grew up in Mexico, she always loved everything art related and at 11 she was sent to live with her dad who was now divorced again and had two children. She didn’t speak English so she had to learn while living there and it was difficult so she felt out of place. Then he met a guy and they dated for like 8 years, she wanted to get married because how can you not be married at 30!! (Mexican weird thoughts) so she broke it up and spent like a year very sad and now she’s trying to put herself out there. She’s a designer but didn’t go to college because she couldn’t afford it, everything she learned she just did by practicing and online curses.
-
Born and raised in Mexico City, Maribel Nuñez grew up liking everything art related. From coloring books to painting canvases, Bel could always be found either doodling, painting or coloring, no matter where she was.
Since little Bel started attending art classes at 4 years old, at 7 years old she had already won multiple drawing and painting contests against other children, and at 10 years old, she had already showcased her work in a few local galleries.
At home, life was fairly simple. She had two parents that had probably got together too young, and no siblings, which meant all attention and expectations fell on her.
Her dad had met her mother at 19 years old while on vacation with his family, and her mother, having always grown up watching love stories on TV, had fallen in love with him instantly.
Young as they were, they eloped, thinking life would be easier since all they needed was their love for each other. Neither of them consdered that, nine months later, having a crying baby sleeping between them would be all they needed to rethink their life choices and go back to their families.
Baby Bel and her mother went back to Mexico, and her father went back to New York.
Since then, her mom, more than a loving figure, became someone who only made sure Bel was fed, had clothes and attended her classes. Her dad sent money and Christmas cards every now and then, but that kind of attention wasn’t enough for a curious creative kid as bel.
At 11 years old, her mother had had enough of Maribel; she was young, pretty and had given her best years to an ungrateful child, so she packed Bel’s things up, put her on a plane and sent her off to live with her dad.
Life became harder.
In New York everything was loud, fast and confusing. She now had two younger sibligns that she had to take care of -even when she didn’t speak their same language, and that took a lot of space in their small apartment. Her dad only focused on providing food and money for his second ex-wife, and as loving as he tried to be, didn’t pay enough attention to his first daughter.
Pencils and paintings became Bel’s safe place, and as big and confusing New York City was, she found herself starstruck by all the street art, galleries and exhibitions.
Eventually, Bel switched pen and paper for a laptop; it was only natural that her skills translated to creating beautiful physical art to creating digital master pieces, and she found herself working small jobs as a designer, first for small bussines owned by friends, later on for bigger companies.
Never an easy child, Bel never quite shook off the feeling of being out of place, and after years of crying and acting out, she finally made peace with her parent’s choices. She learned to enjoy New York; the crowded streets, the city lights and the feeling of being lonely.

Word is they are an ARISTOCRAT student. You should watch out because they can be DOMINEERING and ALOOF, but on the bright side they can also be GENTLE and PLAYFUL. Attributes
Personality/Attitude:
marcello is not necessarily an asshole, but do not expect much warmth from this guy. despite his bad temper and violent tendencies, most times he is rather reserved and distant. he is extremely apathetic and cautious, making it hard to relate or befriend others. not that he minds, marcello would absolutely prefer honing his own skill set than being a social butterfly. in marcello’s mind, the only matter of importance is his success. marcello would be damned if his work did not draw favorable acclaim and admiration.
however, he cherishes a select few that experience a gentler side. while he is not doting or particularly affectionate, marcello is patient and attentive. he is the first to notice a friend’s tone change or mood shift, and he is quick to attempt to resolve the problem. marcello, if anything, is a great fixer. his love for others is facilitated by studying and understanding them; his love is practical, consistent, and giving. in fact, one may even see the boy’s forbidden smile if they were friendly enough.
marcello has quite a wry sense of humor and a low threshold for obnoxiousness. he is a proud, stoic figure who is diligent in his goal of self-actualization. his discipline is his claim to fame, and marcello is willing to do nearly anything to ensure he comes out as the victor.

Anonymous was a Woman
Throughout March, Object of the Week celebrates Women’s History Month. Each Monday a new post will highlight women designers in the collection.
This unfinished angelic figure was likely a design for stained glass. Louise Howland King Cox designed windows for Louis Comfort Tiffany in the 1890s. However, there are few extant records about her work at his company. Tiffany preferred that his name alone appear before the public, and advertisements proclaimed that all work was made under his personal supervision. Although he occasionally credited the designers of the firm’s windows and mosaics, many Tiffany employees—a largely female staff—worked anonymously.[1] This study—itself anonymous, without identifiable facial features—seems a fitting allegory for their legacy.
“Anonymous was a woman”—a line adapted from Virginia Woolf—is a statement often true of museum collections. Records relating to female artists and designers are scant, and works are often unsigned and undated. Fortunately, Louise took it upon herself to document her own training and working methods. A memoir of her student days, dictated later in life, is available through the Archives of American Art’s website. Born in San Francisco, she studied first at the National Academy of Design in New York before enrolling at the Art Students League in 1883.
There, she enjoyed the creativity and camaraderie of the student-run organization, and continued to hone her drawing skills through class critiques. She also observed that:
“Wherever there are art students sooner or later there is bound to be a costume party.”[2]
Costumes and props were made with whatever materials were convenient, like gilded paper, netting, and even dyed cheesecloth. The experience inspired her later costumes for models. She noted that, “For years twisted, dyed and redyed cheesecloth was my mainstay in costuming angels for stained glass windows, for nymphs, semi nudes and allegorical characters.”[3] Likely, cheesecloth drapery was used for this figure, standing before a carefully shaded background. Louise firmly believed that a composition could be “made or marred by the wrong background,” declaring that “a monotone is especially fatal.”[4]
After school, Louise taught in Toledo, Ohio, before marrying Kenyon Cox—her former instructor at the Art Students League—in 1892, after a long courtship through correspondence. She explored mural painting and portraiture, eventually gaining renown for her portraits of children. She was elected to the Society of American Artists in 1893, became an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1902, and was elected to membership in the Society of Mural Painters in 1919. She received the Hallgarten prize at the National Academy of Design in 1896, and was awarded medals at the world’s fairs in Paris in 1900, Buffalo in 1901, and St. Louis in 1904.[5]

I was tagged by the lovely @sashinalash to answer truthfully the following questions.
Do you make your bed? I try. It’s so much nicer to come to bed at the end of the day when it’s made. I used to iron my sheets. I was weird. And apparently had nothing better to do.
What’s your favourite number? 7. It’s just always has been one of those numbers that shows up for me.
What is your dream job? I used to think it was being a fashion designer. But then I did that. And it wasn’t. I actually really loved doing the graphic novel I finished a few months ago. It’d be cool to be able to do more of that.
If you could go back to school, would you? I’d definitely take classes again. I don’t think I’d want to get another degree though.
Can you parallel park? Uh...yes? Are there people who drive who can’t? I grew up in NY. You have to do it there.
A job you had that would surprise people? Ummmm....I had a small healing center for a while and did energy work (Reflexology, Polarity Therapy, Craniosacral therapy etc.)
Do you think aliens are real? No. At least not the way it’s shown in movies. It’s possible there’s life out there. But I doubt it’s humanoid. But 🤷🏻♀️
Can you drive manual? Nope. Never learned.
What’s your guilty pleasure? I’m with Harry on this. Bread. Bread. Bread. Evil stuff.
Tattoos? yep. Quite a few. Would love more.
Favourite colour? Dunno. I wear a lot of black and white. But I love that sort of blood orange red color.
Favourite type of music? I listen to a bit of everything. I suppose I mostly listen to pop when I’m driving. When I’m writing I often listen to classical because it’s not distracting. When I draw, anything goes.
Things people do that drive you crazy? Noisy eaters. Like lip smacking chewing sounds. GOD it makes me insane.
Do you like doing puzzles? Sure. Although I don’t do them ever.
Any phobia? I really despise bugs.
Favourite childhood sport? Can we skip this one? LOL!
Do you talk to yourself? Not usually.
What movie do you adore? I really love Howl’s Moving Castle. But Happy Accidents and Crossing Delancey are two favorites from when I was in my 20/30s. And Hitchcock’s film, Rebecca is my favorite classic film.
Coffee or tea? I don’t drink either, regularly. But I love a coffee if I’m out for breakfast.
First thing you wanted to be when you grew up? Probably a ballerina. LOL! Then a vet. Someone told me you needed lots of shots if you wanted to be a vet so I gave up on that (such an obnoxious thing to tell a kid).
Anyway, thank you for tagging me! This was fun. I’ll tag @rhymeswithumbrella @indiaalphawhiskey @lightssup @cuethetommo and @laynefaire (but only if you feel like doing it)

hey guys, i’m oliver. this is mario aka mar. i’m from buffalo, ny so when i learned there was a buffalo, mn, i knew absolutely had to do it ‘em.
❛ 。 ‹ xavier serrano. he/him. male. › “ MARIO MARINO at dean levinson’s office please. “ it’s that TWENTY-ONE year old JUNIOR from BUFFALO, MN, right ? can’t imagine what they’re in for this time, after all they are LAIDBACK & LOYAL. then again, their PRIVATE & UNFORTHCOMING tendencies could land them in the dean’s office any time of the day. from what i’ve heard they’ve joined THE MEN'S ICE HOCKEY TEAM and majoring in ARCHITECTURE, but their trademark style consists of SNOWFLAKES CLINGING TO HIS HOODIE AND HAIR, A SMILE LIKE A WARNING BEFORE EVERY HIT, GRUESOME SCARS YOU'VE LEARNED TO LOVE. ˚ ◝ oliver. 21. they/them. est.
THE STORY ( honestly ngl this part reads like a wikipedia page so skip down to MISC for somewhat more relevant things )
-- minnesota : land of 1000 lakes, the state of hockey, of cold, long winters you learn to love or leave to forget ---- that was where he was born, on the coldest day of the year. maybe there’s something to that because he doesn’t get cold very often. ( yes, the cold never bothered him anyway...).
-- he had a pretty simple childhood, the only son of a single mother ( #doubleshifting ), growing up just a short walk from the lake --- wakeboarding in the summer and playing pond hockey in the winter.
-- they weren’t a wealthy family, though not struggling mightily either. hockey was an expensive sport, though, and he played through his early days and partially through high school with second and third hand gear when possible.
-- early on, he learned being flexible, adaptable, and always having a good attitude was highly important ; his upbringing definitely had a large effect on that. once he turned 16, he picked up a gig as a waiter to earn some cash for himself. besides being able to scrape enough together to buy a nice new stick, it was certainly a character building experience.
-- architecture was something that felt natural to pursue. hockey wasn’t the end all, be all, though he hoped he would remain connected to the sport ( beyond beer league ) after his prime playing days ended. he had a certain knack for sketching and accurately capturing perspectives -- uncharacteristic maybe, but there all the same. he turned to architecture in the hopes of someday being able to design an nhl arena in the future.
-- cornell felt like a huge longshot : prestigious, ivy league, and terrifyingly expensive. it was his reach school ( st. cloud state was his fallback ), but seemed worth the risk. as luck would have it, cornell had it’s eye on someone on a rival team his high school team played in the state tournament at the end of his junior year, but in the particular game they visited, he caught their eye as well. that conversation afterward was a shock to him, the first time he considered possibly being good enough to make hockey more than just a fun pastime. from there, it seemed too good to be true : acceptance into cornell, a nice athletic scholarship, hockey on a d1 team.
-- that summer, it was one of his days off from the restaurant and he was at a friend’s lakehouse watching the nhl draft with some friends. he was aware it was a very slim possibility ( and well, everyone who plays always hopes just a little right? ). so they had day two of the draft on in the background, while they were eating some freshly grilled burgers and drinking some not completely legally obtained beer and making plans to go out on the lake later. mar was on the couch cracking some joke when he saw his name on the tv : the fourth round, 95th overall to the vancouver canucks. he kinda stared at it not comprehending, and once he did, he stood up and told his friends they were going to the lake.
-- he’s tried not to let himself think to hard about the fact. the fourth round is a very long shot at best --- but it’s not impossible. he’s dutifully gone to development camp every summer since, but his focus has remained to his school and on his work.
-- he knows he has a choice to make at the end of this season : stay another year to finish college or take that next step forward. architecture is what he likes but hockey is what he loves, and maybe he didn’t really realize he might actually get a chance to live out his true nhl dream. he’s been trying not to focus on it. what he does know, is that this year or after he graduates he plans on signing with vancouver if they’ll still have him -- no matter what anyone tells him. they’re the ones that believed enough in him to draft him three years ago, and he feels a sense of loyalty to them for that.
MISC
-- he almost exclusively goes by ‘mar’. no one knows if it’s taken from his first or last name : it’s a left twix/right twix kinda debate. his teammates probably call him marsy or some shit like that.
-- 6′3″, 193 lbs
-- his wardrobe is pretty much all adidas pants, cornell hockey hoodies, t-shirts from various hockey tournaments, running races, and other misc things you get free t-shirts from. he also has a pretty big chunk of canucks related things from the three development camps he’s been to, but he doesn’t wear it too much because it feels a little like a brag to him sometimes.
-- he’s not that superstitious. he does have a routine before every game, but if things get messed up or done in the wrong order, it doesn’t phase him at all.
-- when he was accepted into cornell, he took some of his long-stashed savings to buy brand new bauer skates. it was the first time he’d ever had brand-new skates. they fittingly ended up having red accents. all his pads are still secondhand, though.
-- he has a small sketchbook. he’s constantly sketching buildings, usually in pen. when it’s nice out, you can find him on the quad drawing some campus building or another. he’s likely redesigned lynah rink like a hundred times already.
-- he prefers to be in the shadows rather than the limelight, and his style of play dictates that. he’s not a goal-scorer, not an offensive defenseman, and isn’t all the flashy. very much has a “if no one notices me, then i’m doing my job”-type mentality, because he assumes if someone does it’s probably because he didn’t do enough to prevent a goal.
-- his reaction to being drafted is very On Brand : constantly brushing off things that are pretty momentous. it comes from a bit of a place of feeling like he’s not really worthy of praise. not that he doesn’t like praise, it’s just... it’s complicated ?.
-- very much a steadying force. knows when to laugh, when to be serious, how to just be a rock on the blue line and in the locker room. he tries not to let too much phase him or get to him either. sometimes people joke he would’ve made a good goalie because of it. ( he laughs because while he loves his goalies, they’re really a complete different breed ).
PERSONALITY
+ laidback, loyal - private, unforthcoming
mar is the kind of guy you want to be friends with. he laughs easily and has a certain friendliness about him. that being said, he has a way to make you feel like you know him but you really don’t. he’s a deeply private person and doesn’t freely disclose much of his close personal life : everything from his emotions, to the fact his wrist is bothering him, to any doubts he has. the frivolous things are given freely : weekend plans, parties, opinions. there’s no true reason for his private state, just that he feels it’s important to keep some things very close to your chest.
on the ice he’s far more imposing, unafraid to throw big hits or get in a scrum if he needs to. he’ll protect his goalie as well as his fellow teammates if the occasion arises.
THE AESTHETICS
SNOWFLAKES CLINGING TO HIS HOODIE AND HAIR... not the type to wear a winter jacket even if the weather maybe calls for it. he loves when it snows and enjoys walking to class when it does so.
A SMILE LIKE A WARNING BEFORE EVERY HIT... “ MARINO smiles before every hit in this thing so the other guy knows what’s coming. ” it’s no secret that mar is a physical presence on the ice ; not dirty, just physical. and he enjoys it.
( tw. kinda graphic injury?? ) GRUESOME SCARS YOU'VE LEARNED TO LOVE... well... mar almost died when he was sixteen, in the middle of playing a tournament. someone crashed the net, he went down trying to defend it, and a skate slashed his neck. it’s a miracle it was a shallow cut --- a few millimeters more and his main artery would’ve been slashed. his souvenir from the incident is a three inch scar on his neck that starts near his adam’s apple and extends at a diagonal toward his right ear. it’s healed to look a bit like a rash or hickey.
ACCOLADES
RUNNER UP, ECAC DEFENSIVE DEFENSEMAN OF THE YEAR ( 2018-19 ) : given to the best defensive defenseman in the conference as voted by the coaches of each ECAC team.
NCAA (ECAC) ALL-ROOKIE TEAM ( 2017-18 )
95th OVERALL, 2017 NHL DRAFT ( vancouver canucks )
SCOUTING REPORT
MARINO provides a strong, physical and highly reliable defensive presence on the blue line. he is unafraid to block shots and sacrifice his body to do so. his skating ability, while not elite, is more than proficient and he can get significant speed when necessary. his is more likely to stand up to hits rather than evade them. MARINO exhibits exceptional passing ability; however, he could do well to improve his overall offensive capabilities and on-ice agility. regardless, his value on the penalty kill and ability to diffuse high danger situations from the opposing team must not be overlooked.
WANTED CONNECTIONS
-- i can see him being friends with whoever the student photographer is that captures the team. creative processes fascinate him.
-- close friend on the team: preferably another dman or goalie. why is this here. i should just send it into the main for the wc list huh.
i suck at coming up with these honestly, so i’m just going to go read intros and hopefully be inspired along the way.

Intro
Hi my name is Maddie and I’m a 20 year old art student from NY. I’m starting this blog to document my work from my graphic design and typography classses. I’m new to Tumblr so please be patient with me. I’m still learning how it works.
A little about me - I’m really into a wide variety of pop culture related things. I’m a huge Nintendo and Harry Potter nerd and I love all things horror. I enjoy going to concerts regularly and I like genres such as pop punk, classic rock, indie and alternative rock. I’m a big animal lover and I have lots of pets at home.
I would really appreciate it if you gave me a follow. I will be trying to post regularly and keep this blog up to date with my latest work from class!

WEEK 10: Part I Collage
This week was another fun class because our activity is making collages. I’ve never done a collage before and always wanted to try it, so I’m grateful for the opportunity to experience it in class along with everyone. Before we dived into the activity, we talked about collage artists and artworks first in class to get inspirations and see the techniques used by the artists. A few of my favourite that she showed us are:

Mary Lum was ¹born in St. Cloud Minnesota in 1951, and studied Bachelor of Fine Arts in University of Michigan and also received her Masters in Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. Her work has been showcased internationally in numerous institutions and she have also been a recipient of many awards throughout her years. She is a professor at Bennington College, teaching painting and drawing since 2005.
Her work is mostly inspired by architecture and the world around her and creates not only collages, but also installations and photographs surrounding this inspiration which explores geometry, abstract, perspectives and colour. She aims to “construct new meanings from the familiar and mundane” through her works as it’s also influenced by Cubism and Russian Constructivism. Lum’s artwork shown above which is called ²“Condition Three” is part of her exhibition ³“Edge Conditions” which features her work that explores urban environment in its transitional state and the experience of being in this space in contemporary life. She uses comic books, photographs and paintings to create layers of multiple perspectives to represent spatial memories.

vimeo
Another one of my favourite is by Nathaniel Whitcomb, a designer/artist based in Cleveland, USA who was studying to be a dentist originally but ¹“got to the point where [he] couldn’t not make things” and later on pursued his passion in creating art, or more specifically collages inspired by surrealism. What’s cool and different about Whitcomb is his moving collage which I’ve included (one of many) above. This collage is one of his artworks from his project called “Breathing Collage”. He also uses music and considers this as one of the important aspects of his creation as his ideas are heavily influenced by music. His other works can be seen in his website and Vimeo.

And finally, for the activity I only have Frankie magazines so that’s what I used:

And I wanted to have a topic of some sort and what better topic can there be than the pandemic and the world’s situation right now. My process went like this: 1. Went through my magazines looking for topic ideas, here’s what I came up with; differences in culture, everyone has stories of their own, etc. and obviously I went for isolation during COVID-19. 2. Looked for photos or graphics that can be related to each topics and seeing if I have enough for whichever topic, I was lucky to have enough for my chosen topic. 3. Search for a good background – ripping off the whole A4 page. 4. Plan the layout, where the chosen images are going to be sticked, take a photo for reference. 5. Start cutting up and gluing!
It was really fun and I can see myself creating more collages as a fun activity to challenge myself. Here’s close-up pictures of the details of my collage:

Here’s a part two of WEEK 10 all about the lecture’s topic: conceptual art.
See you in week 11! :)

2020 update
this is going to be a semi-long post! haven’t had a true update in so so long.
i didn’t use tumblr much throughout undergrad and i first wanted to say sorry for neglecting anyone. i still haven’t stopped supporting kevin or kpop through those times, but i just wanted to focus that time on my studies. after graduating in 2018 as a graphic design major, i still am pursuing my goal of becoming a doctor and i kept myself preoccupied with volunteering, extra classes, and clinical experience. I guess the last actual update was just on my twitter, when I met kevin at KCON NY in 2017, screenshot of it below
which was beyond beyOND amazing. i’m so grateful to have met kevin in korea and at KCON; after seeing kevin appear on edward’s video, I got so utterly nostalgic. I got quite emotional as kevin was mentioning old ukiss songs and concepts that “true kissme’s would know.” i watched that video with my sister and we were both freaking out (she’s also kevin fan) because he was mentioning that some fans drove 5 hours with their family to see him when he was at kcon ny, and i don’t want to get ahead of myself but my mom and i literally said that to him so (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) bro i really think he may have been talking about us ehehhuuhhehahe anyway i have so many positive memories and experiences from my time supporting ukiss which made me want to re-surface my old accounts.
aside from following alongside kevin, i got to see red velvet in NJ in 2019 which was a WILD time; also been recently getting into NCT so hit me up with any jungwoo fan accs lmao
i’m glad to be back plz be nice, sorry again for being MIA for so long T.T ♡

All of the SUNY colleges are closed for the rest of the semester. I'm just so completely done and upset with this. This was supposed to be my last semester of college. The semester where I just hung out with my amazing friends and now that's not going to happen I guess. Plus I'm a graphic design major and am taking mostly lab classes this semester which you can't do online. Sooooooo I'm completely screwed in my last semester of college. I just wanted to hang out with my friends man. Plus I don't wanna say goodbye to a couple of my profs yet! They're amazing and now I'll never see them again. There aren't even any cases of corvid-19 in Western NY! Why close all of the schools??????

Can I ask what your "work in publishing" entails? And if someone was potentially interested in that line of work, what advice would you give them? Thank you!
Hello anon! I work on the production side of publishing, as a junior designer in the desktop department. I input corrections to the text as marked up by the production editors. This is everything from author-submitted edits to changes given to me by the editors, such as rewritten sentences, grammar adjustments, inserting new text, new interior art or captions, and anything else that’s being done to the text of the book itself. I also design book interiors, including font choices for body and display text, layout, margins, ornaments, the colors of the hardcover if applicable, every detail that goes inside the covers of a book, everything but the jacket. I also send the final PDF of the interior to the printer and make sure all the most updated files are archived properly. It’s a lot of work, and I’m usually working on 20-30 books at a time, in various states of done-ness.
As far as getting started in publishing, it’s difficult. It’s a competitive industry, and so networking is very important. Internships are always a valuable experience in ANY department. Preferably paid, but there are a lot of unpaid internships out there, and ultimately it is about getting your foot in the door. If you can afford an unpaid internship, take it. A Master’s in Publishing will teach you about the industry, but it won’t necessarily give you a leg up as far as getting a job at a big publishing house. However, the Columbia Publishing Course (NY or Oxford) is a short “boot camp” course in publishing where professionals in the industry come and give lectures three times a day, and you meet a LOT of people. It’s expensive, but less expensive than a Master’s, and something to consider.
There are also a lot of departments that are overlooked when people start thinking about going into publishing. I thought I wanted to go into editorial, but when I attended the CPC at Oxford in 2016, I learned about all the other sections of publishing that go largely unsung. Most people want to be editors, but if what you’re really interested in is going through and tweaking a book’s text to clean it up and make it very sharp, that’s the job of the production editor. If you want to get buzz going about a book, that’s Marketing. If you want to get books into stores, that’s Sales. If you want to get books into other countries, that’s Subsidiary Rights.
Freelance copyeditors and cold readers are also common. A cold reader looks through a finished manuscript that has already seen some edits and looks for inconsistencies in plot lines, details, grammatical errors, and anything a fresh set of eyes might spot. There are classes in Cold Reading that are available at a lot of universities, and it’s a useful skill to have for a freelancer.
Cover/Jacket Design and Interior Design are often two separate departments at the bigger houses, but sometimes the same person will do the interior and cover of a book. Where I work, they’re separate in Adult Trade, but Children’s has them combined. However, even the Big 5 (Simon & Schuster, Penguin Random House, Macmillan, Hachette, and HarperCollins) will often hire freelance designers. If you have graphic design interest and experience, consider mocking up some book covers for classic works of literature to see if you like doing it and what your style might be.
Don’t assume there’s only one department you’re interested in! Find out who publishes your favorite authors. Find out who their editors are. Get a Twitter account, the entire publishing world is on Twitter, and follow editors, marketing accounts, authors, agents. The thing about publishing, too, is: once you’re in, you’re in. It’ll take some hard work getting there, and then once you’re there too, but go for it! Good luck Anon, I hope the tl;dr is helpful!
#wow i did go on#publishing#anonymouse#i love my job so much more than i ever expected#it's very rewarding#it doesn't pay much#don't go into publishing if you want to make money
