Actually posting this one on time, Baxter and Jay getting all snuggly together during a storm;

It might sound childish, but, in the past, Jay could usually depend on his moms to comfort him during storms. He wasn’t one for being coddled, until that thunder cracked and he was made a shaking and cowering mess. 

Except, he didn’t have his moms or even his sister to depend on that day. Liz had joined his moms in an impromptu vacation, the intent being to give Jay some independence that summer the same way they did with Liz back in the day. They couldn’t have predicted this, and Jay wasn’t about to ruin their vacation by texting them about it. So, he’d just become a bundle on the couch, a blanket wrapped tightly around himself. 

He reluctantly stood when he heard a knock on the door, blanket wrapped tightly around him as he opened it. A black and white haired figure stood there with a pure black umbrella, remaining completely dry and smiling brightly. 

“Jay, it’s so good to see you!” Baxter said, as if Sunset Bird looked the same as it always did, “Can I come in?”

Jay nodded, only interrupted by another burst of thunder, making him flinch back. Baxter frowned at that, walking in and closing the door behind him. They both went to the living room after Baxter dried his feet, leaving his umbrella behind to air dry at the entrance.

Baxter was already aware Jay’s moms weren’t in town, which was probably the reason he’d come over in the first place. Jay’s moms had a habit of playing twenty questions with him whenever he stopped by in their presence. But, now they could finally get some peace…if they ignored the storm. 

Jay shivered, sinking down and curling up on the couch in his special spot, not facing the windows to help minimize his fear. As much as he loved seeing the rain, tropical storms could be a bit…intimidating. Baxter didn’t sit down next to him, instead heading over to Jay's kitchen, which he knew fairly well.

“Why don’t you just relax for a while? I can take care of this,” Baxter said, though Jay had no idea what he was referring to. 

Jay watched, propping up his chin on the back of his couch as Baxter made his way around. He gathered chocolate, graham crackers, and marshmallows…smores. Jay watched as he put them all together carefully, putting them in the microwave before pouring them both some milk.

The thunder had quieted outside when Baxter returned, placing the milk glasses down on the coffee table. He made use of the decorative shell coasters, before sitting down next to Jay. 

“I hope this helps you feel better, if only a little,” he said, giving Jay his own plate.

Jay took it, cheeks flushing.

“Thank you.”

Baxter just smiled, sitting next to Jay. They both cuddled under the blanket until the storm passed completely.

I’d love to hear you talk about your s/i and Baxter if you’re up for it ^^

Thank you! There will be spoilers for Baxter's DLC as an FYI

And yes I would love to! They technically met years earlier as kids when they danced with each other at an event. However, they met more officially when they were both young adults and Baxter was vacationing on the island Jay lived on.

They started off as just a fun, summer fling, but it was very clear they both actually liked each other. Baxter seemed in on it to entertain himself, though later down the line it seemed more like he wanted to be doing the entertaining, desperate for connections. Jay, meanwhile, extremely quiet and shy, rarely had people like Baxter show interest in him, so it felt special to him. Baxter secretly was shy and struggled to be included, so those two always looked out for each other.

They were separate for some years after Baxter's vacation ended. However, after some push and pull (more of Jay silently analyzing Baxter with his eyes lol) Baxter admits he does love Jay and regrets being such a jerk when he was younger. The two get back together with them making plans to be connected. And at some point Jay goes to move in with Baxter, making it more official.

That is a very simplified version, but.

Summer Road Trip

Decided to write a very short thing with Step 3 Jay and Baxter (Our Life: Beginnings & Always) for Selfshiptember. The prompt for day three was Road Trip;

"I can't believe we're doing this," Baxter said, raising a thin eyebrow. 

He looked to the figure across from him, Jay's blonde bangs falling back as he stretched. 

"Well, we only have so much Summer left, right? Might as well make the best of it."

Baxter's smile widened at that, taking a sip of his black coffee. 

"Indeed."

It seemed Baxter wanted to say more, shooting a curious glance to Jay, though he kept it to himself. Jay looked away, pretending not to notice.

The cafe was a quaint space, the type of place Jay would never imagine Baxter being in but, here they both were. With his black and white hair, wearing a shirt to match, he stuck out among the warm, wooden floors and beige walls. The walls were covered by pictures, showcasing the cafe’s history, most of them not even in color. The one just to their left showcased what it used to look like back in the day, Baxter’s eyes following Jay’s gray to it.

They were sitting in one of the many booths along the walls, with dark green cushions that reminded Jay of the old game table his family used to own, and a cream table with darker spots scattered along its design. 

Looking back, Jay caught Baxter staring with his beautiful brown eyes, having let Jay silently admire his surroundings before humming.

“After this, we’ll get back on the road. I suspect it will be a couple of hours before we reach civilization again, so make sure you’re prepared.”

Baxter said this with his all too famous smirk, eyebrows arched dramatically and showing off his front teeth. Jay found it ridiculously adorable, ducking his head to hide his blush. Jay just gave him a big thumbs up, his own signature that caused Baxter to laugh. He was always careful when he laughed, trying not to crinkle his nose, though Jay could see the slight movement through his bangs.

Neither took long, finishing their lunch before taking turns looking after the other’s things so they could both head to the bathroom before they left. 

This was only their first stop of many, Jay feeling butterflies in his chest at the thought. But, as Jay looked out the window, sun sparkling in his eyes, he couldn't contain his smile. 

Returning to the car, Baxter would play some of Jay’s favorite indie songs, acoustic guitar ringing out from the speakers, using his phone. On lonely roads they’d roll the windows down, letting the wind rush through their hair and singing out to the hilltops. Even when Summer ended, at least they’d still have this.

Oooo yay I finally get to answer one for Cove!

Roborovski hamster - Which one of you and your f/o is taller?

Cove is definitely taller. Jay is a short king haha. Because of this, Jay always makes Cove carry Jay on his shoulders.

Chinese dwarf hamster - What do you and your f/o do for fun together?

They make weird sandwiches, read together, play video games, go down to the beach to collect shells, and so on and so forth.

European hamster - Do you and your f/o like the outdoors and outdoor activity?

Cove definitely likes it more then Jay. Jay is a bit of a home body. That being said, Jay loves going down to the beach and getting out, he just doesn't like crowds that much.

I'll take this opportunity to talks about Baxter a little more.

SK8ER BOI :: What’s both of your music tastes like? Are they alike or are they really different from each other?

Considering Jay is sensitive to loud noises and Baxter likes hardcore metal, they are very different. Though they both do like a good, gentle indie song.

DYNAMITE :: Is there a song that you strongly associate with your ship? Any particular lyrics that resonate with you for your ship?

Cardigan by Taylor Swift, hands down. The lyrics perfectly describe Baxter's arc (spoilers for his DLC), "When they are young they assume you know nothing, but I knew you," with Jay being one of the few people to actually know Baxter genuinely, "And when I felt like I was an old cardigan under someone's bed, you put me on and said I was your favorite," Jay was always very shy and not used to being picked by cute guys like Baxter, "Giving me your weekends," they spent so much of Baxter's vacation together, "I knew you, Tried to change the ending, Peter losing Wendy," Baxter leaving at the end of his vacation and trying to pretend he didn't care, "I knew you'd haunt all of my what-ifs," Jay knew Baxter would end it by the end of summer, and, of course, finally, he comes back, "I knew you'd miss me once the thrill expired, and you'd be standin' in my front porch light".

Jay is incredibly shy, with Baxter secretly being shy as well in some ways. Though he is the more confident out of the two and a steadying hand for the quite skittish Jay. He is one of the few people Jay will have new experiences with and feel comfortable doing so.

I think at first Baxter and Jay heavily focus on going out and doing things. But, once they calm down, they enjoy just sitting in silence in the other's company, watching TV, baking and dancing together, and just chatting.

I added Cove recently, so, I'll do this for him!

Apple pie: How does your f/o sleep? Do they snooze soundly next to you or do they toss and turn etc?

Cove is quite particular about where he sleeps. So he'd probably take a lot of time before finally getting comfortable and dozing off. I headcanon he falls asleep quicker once he is comfortable than Jay does, Jay being more of an anxious guy lol.

Shortcake: What’s your f/o’s love language? (physical affection, giving gifts, etc)

I think gift giving is probably his biggest love language. He's not the best with words, and he and Jay aren't the most sociable people, so, sometimes giving a gift is the easiest way for them both to show the other that they care and were listening.

Flan: How does your f/o comfort you when you’re upset?

Cove is definitely the type that just needs to rant to someone for a while, especially if he feels overloaded. Sometimes, however, he just needs to be left alone, and I imagine my S/I, Jay, would be very understanding of this as someone that probably suffers from similar issues with over stimulation.
