Okay so this has been slowly cooking in the back for a while now. I never actually planned to post this version, this is the super rough storyboard version of an idea i plan to flesh out fully. However, i don't know if and when i will ever finish it and make the proper version i had in mind. Because that could take such a long time, i decided i would post this rough version now, so you guys can see what i've been up to, and just in case i never manage to finish it :/
The story here is part of something bigger, so sorry if it's a little vague. However, i hope you enjoy :>
Here's the link if u wanna check it out:

Rant about Synesthesia, That Thing Nobody Even Knows About
Okay, so it’s come up a few times irl so I felt like venting/explaining here on tumblr.
I have something called Grapheme-Colour Synesthesia.
Those of you who want more of an explanation than I am about to provide can look it up and will find a well of interesting information. But, as an easy, short explanation, I’ll use an analogy. The human brain is a computer, and things like the senses, which come from outside the brain, are wires that you hook up to the right parts of the computer. For a person with synesthesia, some of those wires get crossed, resulting in an association or cross for the senses.
In my case, when I hear or see a word, I also “see” its’ color. A person with Grapeme-Color Synesthesia will “see” colors that are associated with words and numbers (not so much numbers for me, but definitely words). As an example, the word “word” is hunter green (these names are used loosely, but the actual color is the closest I can get from a brief search of colors on Google), and that never changes.
Over the years, I’ve been able to regulate this color association to the background in my mind, allowing me to focus on the word itself and the reason I’m seeing/hearing it. This doesn’t mean the color stops existing. I’ve actually occasionally incorporated a word’s color into my personal use of the word. For example, I’ve had notebooks that are the same color (or close to it) as the subject that I study in school – art had a red notebook, chemistry blue, and history black.
As a bit of a funny tidbit, synesthesia has actually helped me get a 100 on every spelling test I’ve ever taken that I can remember. This is because, for one, even one letter being added or taken from a word changes its’ color. For example, I knew two people, named Haley and Harley – Haley’s name was navy blue, while Harley’s was a blue/purple mix for which I have no name. In addition to that, rearranging a word’s letters doesn’t change the word’s color (unless a new word is created), which means I’ll still recognize the word. Lastly, every word has a unique color (there may be 10 words that are blue, but all of them are a different shade of blue, you see) that I remember, which means I remember the word pretty well.
Ironically, this doesn’t stop me from misspelling words. The obvious reason is that I make mistakes, which is true especially when I’m typing quickly. The synesthesia-related reason is that part of a word’s color association is in how it’s pronounced, meaning read (I need to read) and read (I have read the book) are actually different, though just in that they are two different shades of the same color. For example, as a child I originally spelled lingerie as linergie and pronounced it lin-er-g (ah, the joys of teaching yourself to read). Despite learning the correct spelling and pronunciation of the word, I still fall back to this old, incorrect form at times because of my original color association of the word. This also makes it hard to remember names at times – if I mishear your name as Bill, and later learn it is Phil, it will take me a long time to call you Phil consistently because Bill is a pale orange and Phil is a dull yellow (this one is not even close but I gave up I’m sorry). My automatic association with you is that pale orange, meaning it will take time to call you Phil consistently because I’ll keep remembering Bill instead.
I had someone ask me, when I explained the computer analogy and gave a few examples such as the ones above, what color his jacket was. Not what color the word jacket was, but the actual color of his specific jacket.
Honestly, my first thought was ‘damn, I didn’t know I was color blind’ because I’m a very sarcastic person most of the time. I refrained from voicing this, but did tell him that his jacket was just as green to me as it was to him, and that he obviously didn’t understand what I was explaining to him. To answer what should have been the actual question, the word jacket is black (there is no link because honestly I’m lazy and black is just black, really). I’ve noticed the trend that words starting with the letter “j” are black – not all words starting with j are, but there are almost no black words that don’t start with it (the word history is the only one that comes to mind right now). I really don’t know if he was actually that unable to comprehend or if he was messing with me, because everyone else I took the time to explain my synesthesia to understood the concept based on my explanation (though they were just as boggled at associating every word with a color as I was at not doing so).
But I never really got over the idea that people could be so completely ignorant of something that, while rare, is a big and important part of the way human beings interact with the world. Pretty much everyone has an amazing story about their synesthesia if you ask them. I figured I’d start things off by sharing my own.
