Decide which nation you want to play as this season!
Welcome to the newest (and first) season of The Tumblr Grand Strategy Game! You (the Tumblr Collective) will be competing with 2 AIs and me to conquer the world as a nation of your choosing, through a simple system of polls and submissions!
As the first order of business with this blog, we will be seeing what country you will play as! This will be decided by a series of polls. Which countries will be on those polls you ask? That's what this post is for! Comment on, or reblog this post with your submission, and it will be on the polls! The first poll will be this Sunday at 4 PM EST.
So, Tumblr, submit away!

Millennium Dawn is the HoI4 mod that I play it so often. And Venezuela is the country that I play the most.
A few days ago, I thought the entire game was broken when it's actually a buggy debug launcher option that I regret doing it on my Steam options.

So actually while I've got you on the line, let me tell you what I particularly like about Crusader Kings above all other strategy games. Let's start with a basic zinger: In a conventional sense, Crusaders Kings is very fucking easy. This is our map.
Tumblr media
If you want to map paint, then even with only a decent understanding of the game's mechanics you can play as Ireland and say "top of the Morning" to the folks over in Pagan. I won't say this has no challenge, but in a other title, like say EU4, this would be a much harder task. That game has a lot of mechanics specifically surrounding aggressive expansion. You touch one province in the Holy Roman Empire and every European power might let you find out for free.
But you aren't playing as a Kingdom, not abstractly. This is who I started as for my first run with the new content pack:
Tumblr media
If you aren't familiar with the game, what is chiefly important to understand is that I am this guy.
He has a family. He has an age. He has personality traits. He has a religion he publicly claims to follow. He has a history as a person. He happens to be the King of Sweden, but he can lose those titles. He eventually dies and passes them on to his heirs based on the realms established succession laws. I am not playing as Sweden in the abstract, but the man who claims to rule it.
What CK3 is at it's core is a role playing game. When you accept this Immersion and bind yourself to accept this, and also accept that you must abide by in character actions (helped by the stress system), the absolute WONDER of this game (and its predecessor) opens itself up to you. This guy likes to lead his own armies (he is brave and a noted warrior and commander), this guy is stubborn to a fault and it often causes friction with vassals and foreign rulers, this guy is wrathful and the consequences of his temper are often fatal. He isn't a great father or guide to any of his children but his oldest son. His lack of consideration and legacy have left scars on many of his other children.
So my genuine reccomendation is that if you haven't played it, it is a genuinely fun role playing experience, and is one of the best examples of emergent gameplay I have ever played across both CK2 and CK3.

How to improve genetics in CK3 (appearance, looks) for your characters without codes and mods:
Tumblr media
So, I'm obsessed with the DNA work in CK3 and here are instructions on how to make it more believable in a couple of minutes.
By removing a couple of lines of code from one of the game files, we get rid of the eye colour and skin colour to hair colour binding for all children and offspring born in the game, including your character's children.
This means that children are born, for example, with the colour of their mother's hair, the colour of their grandfather's eyes and the colour of their father's skin. Not as it used to be.
Find this folder:
C:\Crusader Kings III\game\common\genes (maybe your game folder is stored on a different disc)
We need that file:
Tumblr media
Next, delete these two lines of code and the empty lines formed in their place:
Tumblr media
It should look like this:
Tumblr media
Yay! We get colour diversity for posterity!

Victoria 2 is an accidentally perfect game. A focused piece of grand strategy that practically sprinted out of the hands of its creators. I will forever prefer it over Victoria 3.
Grand Strategy games tend to be about playing some kind of state and conquering or demonstrating superiority over everyone else. The topic hitting so close to home, it's usually approached with extreme, cartoonish abstraction. Hearts of Iron 4 is a great example of this, in which the mighty leading men of WW2 are literally drawn characters and there are almost no wartime atrocities. So, so many youtube thumbnails of hoi4 youtube channel guy #468 wearing Hitler's fancy hat.
Victoria 2's theme is economics and colonialism. It's set from 1836 to 1936. So one would think we get squeaky clean sanitized General Custer and Wholesome Teddy Roosevelt. Instead, Victoria 2 is cold and distant. It has no great men acting out the history. No real characters at all besides randomly generated military leaders. Victoria 2 barely has recognizable historical events.
No there are only 3 things in Victoria 2. Resources, Capital, and The State. And Resources includes people and you play as The State. Victoria 2 is a game where Slavery is bad because slaves don't pay taxes. Victoria 2 is a game where capitalists are useless unless you can control their investments. Victoria 2 is a game where Fascism is the best ideology because it provides the most power to the state.
All of this chiseled into code seemingly without realizing what it represents. That Victoria 2 hates itself and it hates the player. I say that in the best way possible. It is a dark reflection of the soul of Grand Strategy. Ripping open the priorities of imperialism and the narrative of the west. Once that is understood it becomes viscerally painful to play. In a fun kind of way. Like a grand strategy cruelty squad but on accident.

(one of) my dream games is a super ultrarealistic city-building game and it's (ideally, though unrealistically) set in america or at least in major american cities.
and i mean extremely ultrarealistic. cities: skylines is like dumb as fuck arcade shit compared to what i want. it may as well be townscaper.
i want it to be detailed enough that it's used by actually irl city planners to simulate their building projects. i wanna be taking soil samples and hydrogeological surveys and flood risk assessments. and i want the regulations and zoning to be really complex and detailed.
and again, i want this to be set around real-life locations. there should be an option for "present day" mode where you start working with the city as it exists today or "historical" mode for some previous period in the city's history or "free play" more where it's just the blank slate terrain and no development.
and of course you gotta manage natural resources and tax revenue and population growth and population happiness and all that.
if you wanna make it ideal-ideal then there should also be a complex political/government angle too.
and ideal-ideal-ideal there should also be an army/military dimension as well. and actually you should be able to play as city, county, state, or federal governments. all simultaneously (although obviously these different governments should also be able to govern themselves automatically so you're not having to micromanage).
#basically some combination of simcity/cities: skylines and victoria and crusader kings and command: modern air/naval operations#and democracy and honestly you should even be able to open up a business or something or even be a part of a construction crew#so include all those business/management sim games too#and it should be all of those games in one simultaneously#sims too#you should be able to just play as an ordinary dude in a city you build#i want to build my irl city and play as me#and i should be able to do that and rise up the ranks until i'm president#and i should be able to nuke other countries or call in the national guard#and there should be like a civil war/natural disaster/zombie apocalypse scenario#so add in zombie games too#i should be able to build a city and then fight zombies in it like dayz#so i guess my ideal game is all games in one lmao#sorry this got way out of hand#i was originally just going to stick with the city-building stuff but more ideas kept coming to me as i wrote it out#but i will say realistically one game i've always wanted to see was some kind of crusader kings/rome:total war fusion#a game where you play as an individual king/politician and rule your city/kingdom (hyperrealistically)#and very grand strategy oriented#but also with the option to fight battles tactically on the ground like the total war series#or even as an individual soldier#there was this one game i played when i was younger that i was kinda like that and i always thought it was ahead of its time#you could fight these battles in a tactical mode or you could play as an individual hero fighting in the thick of things
