ive been meaning to ask you, what are your thoughts on the new vegas dlcs? :o
Theyre good!... Mostly. I cant make many excuses for Honest Hearts.
If you have them already/can get them for free, then I suggest you play all of them and in order of release (Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, Lonesome Road). Though if you have to buy them all individually, then I suggest just doing Old World Blues then Lonesome Road.
Dead Money is good story-wise but I really hated the gameplay. And Honest Hearts is... visually pretty, but VERY racist. Even for Fallout. Its gameplay is only marginally more interesting than the base game, so if you arent set on doing all of the DLCs then I'd skip this one.
As for Old World Blues and Lonesome Road, theyre great and I cant recommend them enough. Old World Blues has both great gameplay and lore, really enjoyable characters, great humor, lots of replayability... its been my fave the moment I finished the intro cutscene. Lonesome Road is kinda slow but the character its based around is PEAK fiction, I'm serious. Its hard for me to think of a character I think is more badass. For real if you can only play one of the DLCs, PLAY LONESOME ROAD!
I'll put a synopsis under the cut, so see if youre interested in any of em!
Dead Money
Dead Money is set in the Sierra Madre, an extravagant resort that would have been the greatest casino in the west, had it ever been opened. The bombs fell before the grand opening event, and the Sierra Madre froze in time, its state of the art security system locking the place up tight. After many years, the climate control and air conditioning systems began to spit strange toxins into the surrounding city, causing a red cloud to form over the area - which proved lethal to anyone who tried to explore the city. The Sierra Madre attempted to send out a distress signal on the day of the War, but the system did not broadcast an alert signal, having been hooked up to the gala event to broadcast advertisements for the casino, so help never came. And so the Sierra Madre faded from memory, only occasionally being seen in posters across the wastes, until it took on mythic ghost story status, a supposed "City of Gold" in the wasteland where all the treasures of the Old World were rumored to be held. And then a weird old guy kidnaps you and makes you and a few other NPCs explore it to look for gold.
Honest Hearts
Honest Hearts takes you on an expedition to the wilderness of Utah's Zion National Park. Things go horribly wrong when your caravan is ambushed by a White Legs raiding band. As you try to find a way back to the Mojave, the Courier becomes embroiled in a war between tribes and a conflict between a missionary and the mysterious Burned Man. The decisions the player character makes will determine the fate of Zion. Fun fact, the Burned Man is the Joshua Graham you've probably heard a lot about.
Old World Blues
The Courier is abducted by the Think Tank, a group of pre-War scientists that have replaced their bodies with machines. Learning that the Think Tank has removed and subsequently lost the Courier's brain, the Courier aids the Think Tank scientists in fighting Dr. Mobius, the rogue scientist currently in possession of their missing brain. Exploring the Big MT facility, the Courier rediscovers lost technology and fights off Lobotomites, Robo-Scorpions, and more. Really fun characters, though a few plot points aged really poorly. So be careful of that.
Lonesome Road
Lonesome Road brings the Courier's story full circle when they are contacted by the original "Courier Six," a man by the name of Ulysses, a former frumentarius of Caesar who refused to deliver the platinum chip at the start of the main storyline in New Vegas. In his transmission, Ulysses promises the answer as to why, but only if the Courier takes one last job; a job that leads them into the great depths of the Divide, a landscape torn apart by frequent earthquakes and violent storms. This is the fabled location of the battle between the Courier and Ulysses. The road to the Divide is a long and treacherous one, and of the few brave enough to walk it, none have ever returned. Another fun fact, Ulysses drops so much lore and commentary that a third of the game had to be cut just to fit his text files in!!

i don't have my tablet so i'm piecing together the pieces of my fitzier sierra madre au which will make sense to *checks note* three ? three people but listen. james is the singer (in a gorgeous wig) the barrows are pouring all their money into their vanity project of a casino (james got the gig of a lifetime through the younger barrow) francis is the exasperated general contractor who's trying to get everything ready by the date of the grand gala opening despite all the nonsense (why the hell does a casino need military-grade steel plating in all the walls?)

A Film A Year
Tumblr media
Going through an old hard drive today I found this almost-completed list from 2015 in which I'd set myself the task of choosing a single film for each year of the preceding hundred. It was interesting to see in what ways my tastes had changed and just how many more films I'd discovered and fallen in love with in the meantime.
Anyways, I thought I'd finish it off and update it to the present: I very much tried to keep it to just one film per year, but the competition some years was just too high so they've had to share joint first places:

RUTA EL CENTENILLO. Jaén. 2024. #senderismo

Gavin Rossdale of Bush kicked off their 2023 tour at Grand Sierra Casino in Reno. Gavin came out of the gate with an explosive set. It is their first leg of their 2023 tour supporting their newest album, "The Art of Survival," released in 2022. Gavin's magnitude of energy is immeasurable on stage. Bush was a big influence for me, especially during my extreme sports stage of Snowboarding, Wakeboarding and mountain biking.

[ MADRE ] / from lucy
MISC FALLOUT SCENARIO PROMPTS.
[ MADRE ] - our muses search for the treasure of the sierra madre.
Has your life taken a turn? Do troubles beset you? Has fortune left you behind? If so, the Sierra Madre Casino, in all its glory, is inviting you to Begin Again.
Lucy’s pipboy picked up a signal that made Anna’s blood run cold and stopped her in her tracks. A sad reality of being an actor before the war was often hearing the ghosts of her friends and colleagues in holotapes and robots, so it wasn’t Vera’s voice that had drained the color from her face. It was what she was saying.
So if life's worries have weighed you down... if you need an escape from your troubles... or if you just need an opportunity to begin again, join us. Let go and leave the world behind at the Sierra Madre grand opening, this October. We'll be waiting.
“Can your pipboy track where the signal is coming from?” She asked softy as the broadcast started to repeat. The Sierra Madre opening gala…. That’s where she would have been when the bombs dropped. Where she was supposed to be.

Making an 8-ball attack
The third attack in my player's repitoire [repetoire?] will be an 8-ball. Nothing will happen on the first turn, but a lot of damage will be dealt on the second. Although luck isn't used in the damage dealt, the player is gambling on the enemy not being able to kill them in time.
The idea for this attack was based on the Marvel character 8-Ball and all the 2-part or setup attacks in Pokemon.
Tumblr media
Initially I drew a plain black 8-ball. I hated this. It simply didn't gel with any of my other visuals and was just dull. As a result, I spent half an hour making changes with my palette to create the below model - although not perfect, I am a lot happier with this.
Tumblr media
I then added animations - I needed a fade-in, shake, and fade-out. This was fairly simple, my only challenge being that the 8-ball's interior needed to lag behind but not be outside of the exterior to add realism and a little visual flair. It took a bit of tweening, but eventually I got this down.
Tumblr media
However, I ran into a problem. The animation didn't work. I'd used the same method as I always did, the same code too. The ball appeared half-visible, the interior a second later and the text would appear and disappear way after.
Tumblr media
This was fixed by asking Reece - he suggested including a delay. Thinking it wouldn't worked, I added it. It fixed everything. I had assumed that by including the delay here, UE5 would recognise it - it does not. UE5 starts the animation at the first frame, not 00:00. This was causing the fade-in and fade-out to occur simultaneously, causing a choppy mess.
Tumblr media
This is the code in my player I added for this. Nothing remarkable - only unique thing is the 'remove from parent widget' which finally allowed me to get rid of widgets.
Tumblr media
As the damage needed to be delayed, I updated my code regarding the start of the player's turn - if I hadn't used 8-ball the turn before, nothing unusual happens, but if I had, it automatically applies damage.
To my shock, this worked. Like, completely. Unexpected, but appreciated.
Tumblr media
well, it worked as much as my ideas ever do
Upon coming back to this project I elected to change the font of the text showing damage that would be dealt - using FontSpace, I selected two. In the spirit of my game, I flipped a coin which deiced I would use Casino Font, which tied in well with the aesthetics of my game whilst still being readable
The other options were Grand Casino, Sierra Madre [F:NV my beloved], JQKA's WILD and whilst I loved ACED IT, it simply wasn't sight-readable enough.
Eventually I decided to add an animation for this attack. This was also trivial, however it did look choppy. In game, on the other hand, it looked completely fine and much smoother than expected [you love to see it folks], likely due to adding trails onto the 8-ball. The animation was also later lengthened so that it better lined up with the HUD's 8-ball [or as closely as possible - I could have properly timed it but I forgot to]
Tumblr media
This is my final product. The timings may have to be modified but overall I'm happy. The animations work, the enemy gets two attacks for every 8-ball attack, all is good.
