🔮 New Decks, Old Traditions ✨
Making your own tarot is something considered by many readers both professional and amateur alike, however few realize it's actually one of the oldest traditions that can be found in Western Ceremonial magic orders like the Golden Dawn which make use of the tarot. Today's tidbit explains why creating your own tarot deck is not a fun thing to do, but also helps keep that tradition alive today more than a century later. today i drove several towns over to buy two vintage French tarot decks from someone who was selling them both on Craigslist for $7 - i was taking bets on whether the seller (who was very funny in our email correspondence, but only signed off with initials) would end up being a middle-aged woman or possibly a younger queer who just didn't really know what they had
imagine my surprise and delight when the person who answered the door with the decks in hand was an elderly French man who almost certainly bought these new in the late 70s to early 80s! a Grand Etteilla and a Marseille, both by Grimaud - i'm particularly excited about the Etteilla because that was a hole in my collection
he was really sweet & i gave him $10 even though he complained about it ($7 is such a bizarre price but he was just like "no no, enjoy them"). i mean together these decks in this condition are easily worth $100-150 but i'm keeping them! i do have a couple of others i'm thinking of selling, they uh. don't all fit in my cartomancy drawer anymore
#i should take a photo of my decks all together honestly#i have some really good shit#the text on the grand etteilla box is hilarious too#now what i really need is a lenormand & then i'll have an example from every generation#i do have one solitary antique lenormand card#it's prooooobably the oldest card i have?#cartomancy#collections

From our stacks: "A devil from the so-called 'Grand Etteilla' - a set of Tarot cards originally published in 1789. Etteilla was the name adopted by Jean-Baptiste Alliette (Etteilla is Alliette spelled backwards), a French occultist who was instrumental in the early development of the esoteric Tarot, by which the cards were used for divination purposes. Etteilla was the first to publish a deck purely for occult purposes. This card - number 14 in the Etteilla pack; 15 in the Tarot deck - represents Force Majeure (Absolute Necessity), or the Devil. The Devil is depicted as part Pan, the half-goat god of nature, and part scaly, winged demon. In the Tarot the Devil symbolizes temptation and excess, particularly in terms of earthly desires - in other words, the unconscious, or 'shadow' self."
From the book, Demons: Visions of Evil in Art. Laura Ward and Will Steeds. London: Carlton Books Limited, 2007.

🔮 The Sufi Tarot Brings Us Full Circle ✨
The Sufi Tarot is a reminder the great thing about circles is there is long journey around them only to return where you once stood. Without Islam and the Mamluk tarot and many of the other familiar card games we know today would look very different or perhaps not exist at all, and so Ayeda Husain's work brings the tarot full circle reconnecting it with its historical roots.
