God said, "I need somebody willing to get up make breakfast, build a deck, clean the pool, rescue cats, fix my car, go to the auto parts store and find nothing, then invent a part to my car, stay up reading book reports, and giving a gentle hug to bed." So God made my Grandpafer. "I need somebody with arms strong enough to handle an abusive father. Somebody to give advice, woo broken television sets, build balsa wood airplanes, take care of his children's children as if they were his own, to retire twice, and give up his relaxing years." So God made my Grandpafer God said, "I need somebody that knows physics, plays pinball, who will whoop your ass at ping pong, but give you pointers on every little thing in life, who will not punish you with a spanking but a look that made you feel like you wanted to die, a man who in his late 70's could outlift you and your friends, who didn't judge, who just loved." So God made my grampafer. He needed a man that would be just as strong in his 80’s as he was in his 40’s to endure the loss of children and his wife. He needed a man who would truly become a “Great Grandfather”. So God made my grampafur. It had to be somebody who'd not cut corners. Somebody to seed, weed, feed, brake, disk, plow, plant, mow, replenish the family spirit. Somebody who'd be there no matter what. To watch over as memories of loved ones slipped away. "So God made my Grandpafer." For Leonard, my hero. Who became my best friend over the years. Who taught me about welding, physics, to cut down trees, to fix brakes on cars, to fly airplanes, to fix tube televisions, to keep every damned screw that ever was, to make chili and to drink milkshakes, to drive fast but cautious, to buy in bulk, that the best birthday presents are shoes from big five, to stretch before swimming, and that nothing can help the cramps, to bear through the pain of life and a damaged family/body.
