Let’s Be Weirdos Together (Chapter 2)

Summary: Alice O’Riley is a lonely outcast. She’s ready to finish the senior year and get the hell out of her hometown… until she meets Kostya and he turns her world upside down.

2 American Graffiti

We walked to our lockers. I froze up, the walls crumbling over me and the floor moving like we were in a boat. Someone had written in big, red, dripping letters the word “killer” over mine. My knees buckled and I began to feel very dizzy.

—Alice?—I heard Kostya calling me, but his voice sounded distant.

Unable to take any more, I fell to the floor.

Alice was crouching, with her arms around her head. A crowd started to form around us, people laughing and pointing at her. I knelt down beside her, trying to reach her, but to no avail. She seemed to be in another place, a bad place, as her breath was shallow and tears were streaming down her cheeks. She was having a panic attack and I didn’t know how to help her.

Letha elbowed her way through the people and looked at the graffiti in the locker.

—Y’all disgust me sometimes—she said, her voice as cold as ice—. Go fetch rubbing alcohol and erase that!—she commanded to her boyfriend.

—But…

—Do it now, Danny, or I swear we’re over for good this time!

—Okay! Jeez…

Letha crouched too and took a look at her friend. She sighed and looked at me.

—How long has she been like this?

—A minute or two.

—We have to take her to the nurse. Come on, help me.

With her help, I made Alice stand and we practically dragged her to the infirmary. The nurse examined her and shot her a dose of tranquillizer.

—She’s better now, you two can go back to class.

—I’m staying—Letha said, defiant.

—Me too—I quickly added.

—Okay, whatever you want, not my division—she said, returning to her chair.

Letha and I sat down and watched Alice sleep for a moment before I broke the silence.

—What was all that about?

Letha grimaced.

—This gonna be ugly, I warn you.

—I want to know—I said firmly.

—Okay. When we were ten, we had a guinea pig named Fergus as a class pet. Each week, one of us was in charge of his care. The person in charge of Fergus would feed him, make sure he had plenty of water and would clean his cage.

“One Monday, when we came into the classroom, Alice was there, crouching on the floor. Fergus was dead in his cage, and he wasn’t just dead, he had been brutally dismembered and gutted. There was blood everywhere… one kid yelled ‘Killer!’ and suddenly the whole class was chanting it. Alice’s panic attack worsened and later she had to spend a week in the psychiatry ward at hospital because she was having PTSD about the whole incident. She didn’t do it, but… you know how cruel people can be.”

—I know.

Unfortunately, I just had seen an example of this.

—Alice loved Fergus—said Letha—. She was always the first to raise her hand when the teacher asked for volunteers to take care of him during Christmas or summer.

—Did they ever find who killed Fergus?—I asked.

—No, and I just… I get very angry everytime something like this happens—she said, fists clenched—. Even if they couldn’t see how much Alice loved him… whoever did that would be stained with blood, and Alice hadn’t a single drop on her.

—People tend to overlook logic when it suits them—I said.

—I am glad you are here, Kostya—she smiled at me, looking a bit tired—. She needs you.

—I always will be here for her.

—Good, because if you mess with her feelings, I’ll mess with that pretty face of yours.

—You really are a good friend, Letha—I smiled—. Any ideas of what can I do to cheer her up?

—Do you cook?—she asked.

—Yeah, sometimes.

—Cook for her a dessert from your country—she said—. She loves trying new food, especially desserts.

—Okay, I will do that.

First thing I saw when I woke up was Letha and Kostya, waiting for me.

—Guys…—I managed to say.

—Oh my God, you are awake! I swear I will find who did that and report them to the principal…—said Letha, slowly trailing off.

Kostya was looking at me, eyes on fire, and I couldn’t stop looking at him. The whole room disappeared as I dived into his eyes.

—How are you feeling, my angel?—he asked.

—Exhausted. My whole body hurts.

—You are going to be okay, I promise—he said, and I believed him.

—You two should go now—the nurse said then.

—Farewell, my angel—he said, kissing my forehead.

My heart skipped a beat and I sighed, blushing. My vampire prince really liked to be theatrical and I liked it that way, it made me feel warm and tingly inside.

—You should call it quits and go home for the day—the nurse said—. I’ll talk with the principal to excuse you.

—Thank you.

—You have really good friends.

—I know.

The principal called my mom and we went home. She was really angry after the principal told her what happened, but she refrained from saying a thing in front of me, but she had that “we’ll talk” look. Even the principal shrunk a little under her glare.

I was so tired when we finally got home that I slept for two hours.
