-The sole remaining M6A1 Seiran at the NASM Udvar Hazy Center after an 11 year restoration. | Photo: Karsten Palt
Flightline: 53 - Aichi M6A1 Seiran
Capitalizing on the successful raid on Pearl Harbor, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, Commander-in-Chief of the Japanese Combined Fleet, proposed a fleet of large submarine aircraft carriers to attack the continental US.

-I-401 underway, date unknown. | Photo: IJN
Work on the I-400-class submarine, the largest sub constructed until the ballistic missile submarines of the 1960's, began in 1943, though the planned fleet of 18 was scaled back to nine, then five as the war turned against the Japanese. The leviathan subs had a watertight tube which could hold three airplanes, as well as torpedo tubes and a deck gun. Each plane would be rolled out, rigged for flight and launched via a compressed air catapult. In the end, only three were completed, and only the first two, I-400 and I-401 were launched before the war’s end. The US captured all three subs, though I-402 was sunk off Fukue Island to prevent the USSR from also inspecting the sub. I-400 and I-401 were sailed to Hawaii for further study, though they were eventually sunk in 1946, again to keep them out of Soviet hands.
Aichi Kokuki KK was tapped to build the new torpedo/dive bomber, which would be launched from the subs, attack the targets, then return to the sub’s position, which would then surface and retrieve the crew before sinking the planes. Initially planning to adapt the D4Y1 (Judy) dive bombers Aichi was building under license, eventually a clean-sheet design was needed as the modifications would be too extensive.

The final design was a low-wing monoplane with pontoons. The plane featured a crew of two and was armed with an 850kg torpedo or bomb, as well as 13mm machine gun on a flexible mount for self defense. The plane was powered by a license-built copy of the Daimler-Benz DB 601 V12 engine, which provided a cruise speed of 296km/h and a range of 1,188km.

In order to cut down on prep time, the aircraft, given the designation M6A and called the Seiran (lit. “storm from the clear sky”) would be launched from a cold start, with oil and water preheated separately and pumped into the engine prior to catapult, an idea borrowed from the Nazis, who developed it for their incomplete aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin. The first Seiran flew in 1943, and production started in 1944. Two trainers, designated M6A1-K Nanzan (“South Mountain”) were constructed, with hand-cranked landing gear replacing the floats.

The M6A1 were organized into the Shinryuu Tokubetsukougeki-tai (“God-Dragon Special Attack Squad”), and commenced training to attack the locks on the Panama Canal, which would cut American supply lines. The plan was for the I-400 and I-401 to be joined by two smaller subs, the I-13 and I-14, which would be modified to carry two Seirans each, and attack the Gatun locks on the Atlantic side, as this would maximize the damage. Crews trained on a full-scale wooden mockup of the locks, with training concluded on 20 June 1945. The aircraft were painted with false US markings and the subs were set to sail when the Allies captured Okinawa.
The loss of Okinawa resulted in the attack on Panama being canceled, and the sub’s target was changed to Ulithi atoll, where the US Navy was massing in preparation for attacks on the Home islands. The Seirans would be tasked with making Kamikaze runs on the Allied ships. The I-400 and -401 would then sail for Hong Kong to take on additional aircraft to continue raiding Allied warships. The Emperor ordered surrender before the attacks could commence, and the M6As, without wings or tails, were catapulted into the ocean in accordance with orders to disarm.

One Seiran was surrendered to US forces by Lt Kazuo Akatsuka of the Imperial Japanese Navy, who ferried it from Fukuyama to Yokosuka. After examining the airplane, the Navy placed it in storage, and eventually donated it to the Smithsonian in 1962. Restoration work on the Seiran began in June 1989 and was completed in February 2000, when it was placed on display at the Air & Space Museum. The M6A was moved to the Udvar-Hazy Center, where it remains today.

Produced from 1933 to 1939, the Avia B-534 was a Czechoslovak biplane designed and built by aviation manufacturer Avia. As one of the last designed and built biplane fighters of the era, the B-534 was perhaps one of the most well-known Czechoslovakian aircraft. Its production time of over 6 years was partially the result of its impressive maneuverability, and the fact that some operators held on to a preference for the established biplane designs over newer generation monoplane aircraft.
The B-534 was a single engine biplane fighter, equipped with an inline Hispano-Suiza engine of 850 hp. which gave the aircraft a topspeed of just a little over 400 km/h. Its fuselage had a rectangular steel tube structure, which was attached using a mixture of bolts and rivets and braced together with streamline wiring. Its wings had a riveted steel structure covered by fabric. These were attached to the fuselage with N struts; Such N struts also attached the outer sections of the upper- and lower wings. The front section of the fuselage had metal covering, while the rear section was covered in fabric. The aircraft was armed with four 7,92 mm. machine guns which were placed in the nose, firing through the propellor arc using interruptor gear.
Upon its introduction with the Czechoslovak Air Force in late 1935, the B-534 was put to use in the fighter-interceptor role, besides types such as the Letov S-31. Come 1938 the B-534 was the only type left in Czech service to be tasked with this role. In November 1938 the Czechoslovak Air Force had a total of 370 B-534’s in service. When in September 1939 WWII started, the aircraft had been delivered to the air forces of Czechoslovakia and Bulgaria. During the fighting early in the war, the B-534 proved to be outclassed and all surviving aircraft were taken by the invading German Army.
They divided the aircraft and supplied them to, amongst others, Romania and the independent State of Kroatia, where they saw limited service. Astonishingly Germany also took an interest in possibly using the B-534 as a carrier-based aircraft. To evaluate its suitability for that role, three aircraft were equipped with a tailhook and were structurally strengthened before the flight test program started. It was never to be, because none of Graf Zeppelin class aircraft carriers Germany intended to build were ever completed.

Greyhawk Initiative’s Newest Warships

Admiral Summerdawn-class Carrier
The Admiral Summerdawn-class was under development at the beginning of the Void-G.I. War. The first vessel launched under it’s namesake, the Admiral Summerdawn, and joined the Second Fleet of the Initiative. A second vessel is under custruction, but isn’t due to sail until at least June 15th, 42 L.C.
With a compliment of ten attack aircraft, five torpedo bombers, and six air superiority aircraft, as well as ten five inch dual purpose guns. With a torpedo belt, medium armor, and a speed of 28 knots, the carrier can respond to threats or evade enemy forces. (Reference, Graf Zeppelin-class, Kriegsmarine)

Defender-class Light Cruiser
An upgrade from the Feathermoon-class Light Cruiser, the Defender-class Light Cruiser houses multiple improvements developed during the conflict with the Void Fleet. Armed with nine 8″ guns housed in three turrets, as well as two sets of Quad torpedo launchers, the cruisers are capable of punching higher than their weight class. With light armor, a speed of 32 knots, and formidable anti-air capabilities, the vessel is cable of evading and defending itself.
The first three Defender-class cruisers were launched on May 15th, the Defender, Renown, and Darkshire, joining the Second Fleet.
(Reference, Leipzig-class, Kriegsmarine)

Westfall-class Heavy Cruiser
The first independently developed heavy cruiser outside of Stormwind’s Purview, the Westfall-class Heavy cruiser, or battlecruiser, represents the evolving nature of warfare on the high seas. Armed with twelve 10″ guns in four turrets, as well as 20 anti-ship secondaries of various smaller calibers and moderate air defense, the ship is designed to combat capital ships when a battleship is not present. With a speed of 30 knots, and moderately heavy armor, the ship can take most hits, and outrun most vessels that can indeed hit extremely hard.
The first vessel, the Westfall, was launched on the 16th of May, 42 L.C., and assigned to the Second Fleet.(Reference, Roon-class, Kriegsmarine)

Class C Destroyer
An improvement over the Class B destroyer, the Class C destroyer has six 5″ guns in three turrets, and three Quad torpedo launchers. Still having little armor, but excellent agility and a speed of 38 knots, the Class C can evade most shots.
A total of eight ships, Z-7, Z-8, Z-9, Z-10, Z-11, Z-12, Z-13, and Z-14, were launched, with Z-7, Z-8, and Z-9 assigned to the First Fleet, with the rest sent to the Second Fleet. (Reference, Type 1934(c) class, Kriegsmarine)

In 1947, she served as a target ship and was sunk in the Baltic Sea. However, it was not qualified for renovation. In the summer of 1945, the raised and partially repaired ship was incorporated into the USSR Navy. At the beginning of 1945, fearing the advances of the Red Army, the carrier was partially sunk and shelled by artillery. The aircraft carrier was towed to Szczecin, where useful equipment was dismantled. This was due to the withdrawal of all large units after the Battle of the Barents Sea. At the behest of Adolf Hitler, work was stopped in 1943 despite the progress of the construction at over 90%. Graf Zeppelin is the only aircraft carrier in the history of Germany. This advanced and exclusive collector’s set is sure to please fans of navy, history and modeling, both big and small. The COBI Graf Zeppelin aircraft carrier can be displayed on the display stand included in the set, which features a plate with the name and scale of the model. The set also includes a special transparent brick which, after attaching it to the base, can imitate a plane taking off. The model comes with eight block micro-planes, which are made in new color versions. With the help of a knob located in the invisible lower part of the hull you can raise and lower the elevator with a plane attached to it.
