underrated characters

KOTLC is great and all… but I always sit back and catch myself thinking about the things we didn’t get to see. The characters who deserve so, so much more.

Yeah, Sophie’s the main character, and she has a bazillion abilities for absolutely no reason and has been stuck in a dumb love triangle for how many books now? And she’s recently developed a personality that makes it??? Hard??? To even read her parts anymore???

I, for one, am… sort of done with Sophie. She was great—imo, she peaked somewhere between Neverseen and Legacy. But after that… I feel like she’s just slowly begun to get really annoying.

So instead, I focus on everyone else.

Dex. This boy has been with Sophie from day one. He befriended her when he didn’t have to. He stuck with the weird human girl with brown eyes that everyone was suspicious of. And where is he now? We don’t even know half the time. Think of the trauma he’s going through with the recent revelation of Rex. Think of how he can’t sleep thinking about it. Think of how, every time he sees his little brother, he’s overcome by despair of how people will treat him, and a sense of protectiveness to guard his baby brother from those awful, scathing comments.

Grady and Edaline. They’ve already lost a daughter. They are so, so brave to not break down in tears from watching their second daughter risk her life everyday. Think about their struggle to not let the grief rip them apart. Think about Grady, and how he let his Ability take control of him. Think of how he is willing to do anything to protect his loved ones.

Councillor Bronte. Think about how Sophie completely changed his world. Think about how, after thousands of years of being the only Inflictor, this twelve-year-old girl comes along and shows him a completely new side to his Ability. Think about just how much he’s experienced in five thousand years of living. Think of the joy, the devastating grief; think of all the missed opportunities, all the friendships that have come and gone. Think of the battle between man and self, between Bronte and his inflicting. For over five thousand years.

We know Sophie can’t sleep. But what about Dex? Grady? Edaline? Bronte? Heck, what about Wylie? Marella, Biana, Tam, Juline, Tiergan? Shall I go on? Do they stay up at night, shaken from past memories?

I had a point when I started writing this but it turned into a rant. So there you go. Do with it what you will.

I'm sure this has already been discussed to oblivion but I want to touch on Grady and Edaline dealing with grief and how Sophie impacts that in the first book.

We learn pretty quickly that grief is not a normal experience in the elvin world. The fact that Jolie died in a horrible way isolates the Ruwens from society. They then isolate themselves for 15 years until Sophie comes to live with them. This brings up a lot of memories related to Jolie and probably whatever healing the couple was able to go through together was shattered a bit with Sophie's presence.

But Sophie understands grief because she was raised by humans. She knows how hard it is and is empathic towards Grady and Edaline because of this. It's a really interesting dynamic to me because while Sophie brings up a lot of pain for Grady and Edaline, she also helps them heal.
