So this guy, Kid Cameraman (Grady Dawes), their friend, went missing.
And apparently he is to the Teen Titans what fanon Tim Drake is to the Batfam (their stalker / photographer whom they adore)
So obviously, they're all real torn up and sad about it and they go out to try and rescue him from this fictional country.
They go off and apparently face off with the real four horsemen of the apocalypse and stuff, but the main point here is that at some point, they actually successfully stopped Death from killing a mother and child, BUT inadvertently caused their friend to die because of it!!!
THAT'S LIKE... LOWKEY REALLY MESSED UP?!?!?!

Backstory: Being raised by his father, Hongjoong had always wanted to see the world. He had traveled both by sea and sky with his father and learned under his wing, but after his father’s death Hongjoong inherited the ship and renamed it The HALA at the age of eighteen. “Hearts Awakened, Live Alive,” his father always taught him. With his friend Yunho, he was able to repair and upgrade many of the ship’s engines and technological aspects all making a comfortable environment for his future crew. One night, Hongjoong went to a bar to try to relax but ended up rescuing a girl whom he would fall in love with, Jo Da Hae. For three years, the three of them began recruiting their teams in order to search for the greatest treasure to ever be discovered.

She found work in a local bar and was making a decent living but never felt she was getting anywhere. The night she met Hongjoong was the night her life changed for the better. Two men had tried to flirt with her as her shift was ending, but she rejected both of them. The men fought, and Hongjoong pulled her out of there just in time. His father never quite recovered from the tragedy but never failed to show love to his sons. After his father died, Seonghwa and his brother parted ways but kept in touch. Studying oceanography at the university, he met Geology major Grace-Anne Dawes, and the two hit it off immediately. Although, he hadn’t quite completed his schooling, he was able to gather whatever medical books he could find and study from them. Now, on The HALA, he’s the medic and the Quartermaster. He often would hear her sing whenever she studied, was getting ready for the day, getting ready for bed, anything. Her voice melted his heart; and knowing that she’d be the woman for him, he saved part of what he made for a ring to propose to her with. For years, they had been friends, but it wasn’t until they were both eighteen when San confessed his love to her and she had felt the same. The two eloped shortly after San’s twentieth birthday. However, after a break-in in the Wilcox home, he and Celestia had to escape without looking back. After mourning the loss of Celestia’s parents and two older siblings, the two were soon recruited by San’s friend Hongjoong. However, one fateful night, robbers broke into her home, causing her mother to give her a large amount of money to take with her and San to escape. Mrs. Wilcox was the only one who knew of her daughter’s marriage to San. Once on the captain’s ship, the two feel safe again. Due to her pregnancy, she spends most days quietly studying the artifacts the crew finds on their journey.
___
-Mingi

He spent countless hours studying both aeronautics and pirate ships until he was able to teach himself how flying ships worked. Mingi was also known for being a sweetheart despite his strong features, and when he met Kim Taeran, she had rocked his world. When she got to college, she met Mingi but didn’t trust him right away as she did with others. As time went on, she opened up to Mingi more and eventually found another one of very few people to trust. One of those friends was Dinah Grady, and eventually they became lovers. He studied physics all throughout his schooling, and eventually earned himself a degree in that field. However, he’ll have times where he doubts if people genuinely love him due to the lack of love from his folks. In order to get a fresh start, he and Dinah ran off to begin a new life for themselves and eventually stumbled onto The HALA.

When her heart was stolen by Jung Wooyoung, she knew she wanted to be with him for the rest of her days, but she’s always there for him when he needs someone to hold. The two of them eventually joined The HALA, and were the last ones to join, completing the crew. He was often neglected, and eventually led him to be a troublemaker, often getting his hands on matches and fireworks. When he was in middle school, he was sent to counseling and his mentor waisted no time in helping Jongho get back on his feet. His mentor was also a gunman, so he taught Jongho how put his pyrotechnic skills to good use. Once Jongho was able to go off on his own, he ran from home, and sneaked onto The HALA, but not without Dahae noticing and taking him to Hongjoong. Since then, Jongho has been in charge of the weaponry on The HALA. He might have a short temper sometimes, but he’s learned to control it greatly.

Shakespeare and Fury Incorrect Quotes
Don ‘Wardaddy’ Collier: Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more: it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
Grady Travis: Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, and therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.
Boyd Swan: What's mine is yours, and what is yours is mine.
Trini ‘Gordo’ García: By the pricking of my thumbs, Something wicked this way comes. Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.
Pete Binkowski: They have been at a great feast of languages, and stolen the scraps.
Michael Parker: I will wear my heart upon my sleeve; For daws to peck at.

The newest weight loss craze is… Gypsy curses!
After pounding through (phrasing) The Talisman, it was 10am on a Sunday and the forecast was calling for rain. So I set out to bake some sourdough (it takes 8 hours start to finish, that’s how much I love carbs) and settled in with Thinner.
So Thinner is the book that ended Richard Bachman in 1985. I’ve told the story of my pal, super nerd Steve Brown, but after having read 5 Bachmans, I wish I could find good ol’ Steve and plant a big ol’ kiss right on his lips. If Stevie hadn’t cracked that code for a few more years, I might be in the fetal position with more Bachman to read. Thank you Steve, Thank you.
All said and done, after King was outed and Bachman died of “cancer of the pseudonym” (as King was quoted), Thinner was the last published Bachman for a while. Eventually we’ll get to The Regulators (published in 1996) and it’s twin, Blaze (published in 2007) but we’ve got a long and winding road of books between here and there. And that makes me so very happy.
Like most King, the story begins in his own life. Weighing in one day at 236, his doc told him to lose some weight. I’m speculating that the weight gain had something to do with his alcoholism, but I’m not sure when King stopped drinking and maybe he just liked bread as much as me and Oprah. He lost the weight, but griped that he didn’t have a choice in the matter, and there, the idea for Thinner was born. Why he chose this story to publish as Bachman, I don’t know, but ultimately the similarities of this story to King’s own was too close for ol’ sleuthin’ mc sluetherson, Steve Brown.
To be fair, I didn’t hate Thinner as much as other Bachman novels. It was the first with a supernatural element, which is a plus for me. The protagonist was actually not a terrible dude. Well until the end. Much like Ben Richards in The Running Man, he was kinda a dick, but not on the same level as, lets say, Barton Dawes or :::shudder::: Charlie Decker.
Billy Halleck is your run of the mill American suburban guy. He lives in Connecticut, is a lawyer, overweight, and has his vices, much like most of us do. His take the form of Doritos and Budweisers. I like bread and white wine. I get it. His wife nags (why does the wife always have to “nag”??) him to eat better, but she doesn’t really ever do much besides scold him. Typical wife stuff. Sigh.
So, Billy wins a big court case and goes out to celebrate. On the way home, his wife gives him a handy while he’s driving. We’ve all been there, right? Just kidding, I haven’t. And he accidentally plows over an old lady who was, to his credit, jaywalking at night.
All of mens downfalls fall squarely on women giving them handys when they’re not suppose to, amiright?
(Fair warning - I don’t always do straight up plot summaries, but I’m going to on this guy and spoil the ending. Fair warning on a 33 year old spoiler.)
So Billy gets off on vehicular manslaughter because he’s a white guy that lives in Connecticut. Seriously. Apparently the Judge grabbed his wife’s tit once at a party and I guess that means he owes Billy one? Jesus Christ. The local police chief testifies Bill was sober, the case is dismissed, and everyone goes back to their TV sets.
Except, the old lady’s dad, who is clocking in at 106 years (seriously, what’s his secret? tell me it’s bread) decides to put a curse on our pal Billy. He places his hand on Billy’s cheek outside the courtroom and whispers…. thinner. Yeah, that’s the name of the book alright.
Now I’m realizing I’m making Billy sound like a monster. And in hindsight maybe he was. But I truly didn’t hate him through this book. He was losing 5lbs a day for weeks, wasting away to nothing. He was scared. I felt bad for him, mostly.
Billy is dropping pounds left and right, and at first everyone around him is amazed. He’s not, as the gypsy’s words linger in his mind and he’s rightfully terrified. But now that he’s thin, his wife wants to have all kinds of hot sex with him and he’s loving every minute of that part. Ok, maybe he is kinda terrible.
Once he starts to look emaciated, he’s off to the doctors and clinics (by order of his nagging wife, of course) which does nothing. He finds out the tit-grabbing judge is slowing turning into a lizard, and the police chief has boils all over his skin. Cool. He’s off in search of the gypsy to take the curse off.
He calls in the help of his mobster friend from New Jersey, who runs an italian restaurant. Can’t make these stereotypes up, folks. They find the gypsies and basically scare the shit of out them until the old man decides to agree to remove the curse. There’s some pretty fun cat-and-mouse and mobster stuff in the back half of this book that help make it a quick read.
The gypsy removes the curse but under one condition - the curse now lives in a pie (serious), and Billy has to make someone eat the pie to pass the curse along. It’s like It Follows, but with pie instead of sex. Give it to the guy from American Pie and kill two birds with one stone I say.
So Billy heads home, to give the pie to his wife. Yup, his nagging wife whose handy was what got him here in the first place. He legit blamed her and thought she deserved to die. This was when I gave up on Billy. I’m not sure what I would do in that situation, but I certainly wouldn’t do that.
Turns our Billy’s daughter (think I forgot to mention her, my bad) comes home early and while Billy is asleep, shares a piece of pie with her mom. Billy awakes to find they’ve both eaten the pie and hates himself. Very little sympathy for ya there bud. The book ends as he lifts the pie plate and takes a bite, sealing his fate with his family. You’re still an asshole, Billy.
First Line: “Thinner” the old Gypsy man with the rotting nose whispered to William Halleck as Halleck and his wife Heidi come out of the courthouse.
Last Line: “Eat hearty” Bill Halleck whispered in the sunny silence of the kitchen, and cut himself a piece of Gypsy pie.
5/10
Adaptations
Good lawd, this movie.
Thinner was made in 1996. By then, there had been 22 original King feature films. TWENTY TWO! That’s not counting sequels, tv movies or short films. Y’all, these were some bad movies. Cat’s Eye. The Running Man. Maximum Overdrive. Children of the Corn. The Mangler. Murky Waters. That last one isn’t actually a King movie, but you don’t know because you haven’t seen any of these. Even I haven’t been able to make myself watch some of these.
The initial fascination after Carrie and The Shining had wained. King’s most successful movies in the 80s - 90s (Stand By Me, Shawshank) were decidedly un-King-like. There were some redeeming tales of horror (Pet Semetery and Misery) but mostly there were a whole lot of turd burgers.
Thinner was made on a modest 17 million budget, and barely made it back at the box office. My favorite part of this story is that the initial screen tests showed that audiences hated the ending, and so they “fixed” it by making it so. much. worse. The movie ends with Billy poisoning his family, then rather than kill himself, he choses to murder his wife’s maybe-lover with the killer pie instead. Great stuff.
But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. This movie features tons of people I know fondly as other characters. Billy is played by who I know as Bart Bass of Gossip Girl fame. He plays Billy with all the subtly and voice acting of Christian Bale’s Batman. He was bad in the book but he’s a monster in the movie; constantly shoving food into his face and calling his wife a bitch. Not getting any sympathy points from me Bart.
The gypsy is played by the dad from My Big Fat Greek Wedding that just wants to spray windex on everything and drink ouzo. I love him! He’s got Billy Crystal in The Princess Bride makeup on and it’s just dreadful.
The chief is played by Chief Grady from Super Troopers, and his part is small and I can only picture him saying “I’m going to pistol whip the next guy that says shenanigans!”
The only redeeming character is Joe Mantegna as Billy mobster friend, who lays on the New Jersey mobster schtick as smooth as butter.
This movie being made well requires realistic rapid weight loss. Although the guy that played Billy lost 20 pounds for the role, it was not nearly enough to be believable. He spent the first half in a terrible fat suit which I was saddened to learn was made by the same special effects team as Mrs. Doutfire. This guy wasn’t even Tobias Funke as Mrs. Featherbottom believable. The second half of the film prosthetics are applied to make him look skinny but he just looks like droopy dog.
I’d see this movie again as a midnight feature you could yell at and throw popcorn at the screen.
Y’all, I have Skeleton Crew next, which is more short stories. After ranting about bad King movies, I was happy to learn that only one film, Frank Darabont directed The Mist, was birthed from Skeleton Crew. Thank goodness.
