Gracie Gold's book "Outofshapeworthlessloser" seems to be a very insightful book into skating behind the scenes. I read a couple of snippets and she goes through topics of handling of LGTBQ+ (she identifies as bisexual), eating disorder, sexual assault (John Coughlin's case especially), NBC commentary (she picksTara Lipinski's commentary apart) competing with the Russian's and the doping allegations (as in the TSL tweet) etc.

I really think she is right about whether skaters should really aspire to be competitive with Russian skaters if we know the price to pay?

Seems like a must - read!

(btw I dislike tsl, but they shared the take from Gracie so sometimes even they share something useful)

As details about the new Gracie Gold biography come out, a new WSJ article disclosed the following:

"Gold’s memoir “Outofshapeworthlessloser,” which will be published Tuesday, includes her explosive allegation that at 21 she was raped by a fellow skater at an event after-party—and that five years after the incident was reported to the U.S. Center for SafeSport, she has no idea whether the case has been resolved. "

This is so heartbreaking and horrifying and adds yet another proof of the incompetency and systemic failure of the figure skating community. I hope this story will get some follow-up because MY GOD.

I hope I'll get to read this biography, but what thing that is clear is how toxic fs fandom is. In 2016/17 season (and prior to it) everyone was getting a kick from watching her crumble, always perceived as an American princess who was a symbol of white privilege her demise came as entertainment to so many. I still remember the story of her throwing her team USA coat to the trash and how everyone responded to it (TSL celebrated it as DRAMA of course). I wish we would all learn something from this, but watching how fs fandom are celebrating the demise of Kevin Aymoz I suspect no one has learned anything.

When I I first started watching Gracie, I didn't know much about her life beyond skating. Her dress choices are always divine.

I did check out during a couple chapters. The John Coughlin chapter. The majority of the chapters about Gracie and James Hernandez. That one was more just because I was bored. I do love James and Phoebe as a dance team. I just get bored easily with love stories.

I love that Gracie is bisexual. Before reading this, I had no idea.

Gracie saying "adults skate too" I had a moment. She counted Kaori Sakamoto(and stumbled over her name in the audible narration) as an adult. At the time, Kaori was 22. Yes, an adult. But 22 is about the average retirement age for figure skating that I've been seeing and a lot of times, it's even younger than that.

This sport is not built for longevity. I applaud each and every skater, just for showing up and giving it all they've got. If that's all you do, retire at any age you want. Or be a longevity queen like Gracie Gold, Nicole Schott(GER) or if we're talking gymnasts, Sanne Wevers(NED) still in the Olympics at fricking 32 years old.

I wasn't planning on reading Gracie's book until the hype died down. But I'm glad I read it anyway.

I realize skating is fucked up. I realize that there's too much focus on quads and not enough focus on mental health. There needs to be more positive reinforcement in coaching. There needs to be better funding. No skater should have to retire just because they don't have the money to do what they love.

There's so much I could say about Gracie's book but this current chapter about her boyfriend and her cat is killing me.

How did she find the only anorexic cat on the planet?

James thinking at the vet that people are recognizing her when he made the appointment in his name and it turning out that they're all just psyched to see the very rare cat she has.
