ok in my head 'EDM' is like Steve Aoki-ish post-Deadmau5 kind of prog house whatever, like so
youtube
which tbf i also don't really care for. but i am starting to suspect that, much like 'electronica' once extended to 'anything made with electronic instruments' instead of localizing as big-beat, you know, Fatboy Slim kinda thing, 'EDM' truly is 'Electronic Dance Music' in a very broad sense, theoretically encompassing anything from hi-NRG disco to Ilian Tape-type chill, thinky techno to gqom to jungle to UKG to EBM to etc. 'oh i hate EDM' how. it's like saying you hate guitar music. what. all of it? you hate "I Feel Love"? not even a whiff of an attempt to recognize the genre's roots and continued importance in BIPOC and queer spaces? im gonna throw up into your mouth

TAEYONG, JENO, HENDERY, YANGYANG, GISELLE - ZOO (2022)
youtube
Release Date: 14 Jan 2022
SM has a house full of artists that they are not afraid to use. Pairing NCT rapline with Giselle was definity a success, mostly because of the song they got to perform. K-pop borrowing *heavily* from African sounds is no news (BTS’s Idol must be the most prominent example) but it’s always great to hear that somewhat experimental coctail.
3 things that got me hooked:
Oh what a rythm we have here! First thing that comes to my mind is gqom but I am not well versed in what is going on in African music landscape. It’s definietly something that could have been played in Jo’burg though.
The chorus and those tiny vocal samples in the background.
Endings of Jeno’s prechoruses. “This is awesome wild” could be a meme in and of itself along with the cartoonish “weeee!”. Got me cackling.
all the songs can be found on the ever growing playlist

IN SESSION
In for a guest mix this week, it’s French producer Flore. Label head of POLAAR, she has been on our list for a long time. Her session does not disappoint, expertly showcasing her love of percussion rich bass heavy dance music. From her early days as a breaks producer releasing music with the likes of Botchit & Scarper, Splank, and Mofo, to launching POLAAR, with Marc Weistroff in 2014 she has continued to purse her love of drums and bass.
