How Vehicle GPS Tracking Canada Can Reduce Carbon Emissions in Cities?
In the bustling urban landscapes of Canada, where traffic congestion and environmental concerns are growing challenges, vehicle GPS tracking Canada technology emerges as a powerful ally in the fight against carbon emissions. The adoption of GPS tracking systems in vehicles across cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal offers more than just efficient navigation; it presents an opportunity to reduce transportation's carbon footprint significantly. GPS Canada Track offers solutions that play a pivotal role in reshaping how vehicles operate in urban centers by optimizing routes, minimizing idle time, and promoting eco-friendly driving practices.
Reducing Carbon Emissions through Vehicle GPS Tracking: A Sustainable Solution
GPS tracking technology is revolutionizing urban mobility in Canada, offering more than just efficient navigation; it presents a promising avenue to combat the pressing issue of carbon emissions. With cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal grappling with traffic congestion and environmental concerns, the adoption of GPS tracking systems has emerged as a game-changer. Here's how vehicle GPS tracking Canada can significantly reduce carbon emissions in cities.
Optimizing Routes for Efficiency:
GPS tracking systems analyze real-time traffic data to optimize routes, reducing unnecessary fuel consumption caused by idling in traffic or taking inefficient paths. By guiding drivers through the most time-efficient routes, vehicles burn less fuel, thereby lowering carbon emissions.
Minimizing Idle Time:
One of the significant contributors to carbon emissions is vehicle idling. vehicle GPS tracking Canada technology monitors engine activity, allowing fleet managers to identify and address excessive idling promptly. By minimizing idle time, vehicles burn less fuel, leading to substantial reductions in carbon emissions, especially in densely populated urban areas.
Promoting Eco-Friendly Driving Practices:
GPS tracker Canada systems monitor driving behaviors such as harsh acceleration, sudden braking, and speeding. Fleet managers can provide feedback and training to drivers based on this data, encouraging eco-friendly driving habits. By promoting smoother driving patterns, vehicles consume less fuel, thus decreasing their carbon footprint.
Fleet Optimization and Maintenance:
GPS tracking enables efficient fleet management by ensuring that vehicles are used optimally. By preventing unauthorized vehicle usage and optimizing maintenance schedules, the technology helps maintain vehicles in peak condition. Well-maintained vehicles operate more efficiently, consuming less fuel and emitting fewer pollutants.
Encouraging Public Transport and Carpooling:
GPS tracking data can be integrated into public transportation systems, allowing real-time updates for commuters. By providing accurate arrival times and route information, public transport becomes a more attractive option, reducing the number of private vehicles on the road. Additionally, GPS tracker Canada can facilitate carpooling initiatives, further reducing the overall number of vehicles on city streets.
Data-Driven Policy Making:
GPS tracker Canada systems generate valuable data on traffic patterns and vehicle usage. City planners and policymakers can utilize this data to make informed decisions, such as implementing car-free zones, optimizing traffic signal timings, and developing cycling infrastructure. Data-driven policies can lead to more sustainable urban transportation systems, thereby reducing carbon emissions.
Enhancing Urban Sustainability with GPS Trackers
Smart Traffic Management:
GPS trackers offer real-time insights into traffic flow and congestion patterns. City traffic management systems can utilize this data to optimize traffic signals, reroute vehicles away from congested areas, and reduce overall traffic snarls. Smoother traffic flow results in reduced idling time and, subsequently, lower carbon emissions.
Eco-Friendly Routing for All Vehicles:
Beyond fleets, GPS trackers can be integrated into everyday vehicles, guiding drivers on eco-friendly routes. By suggesting paths that minimize fuel consumption and reduce idling, individual carbon footprints decrease. Encouraging private car owners to adopt trackers can collectively lead to a substantial reduction in emissions.
Monitoring Commercial Fleets:
GPS trackers provide detailed information on commercial vehicles' performance. Fleet operators can monitor fuel efficiency, driver behavior, and maintenance schedules. By ensuring optimal performance, these trackers help commercial vehicles operate at peak efficiency, minimizing emissions per delivery or service.
Optimizing Last-Mile Deliveries:
With the rise of e-commerce, last-mile deliveries have surged, contributing significantly to carbon emissions. GPS trackers aid in optimizing delivery routes, enabling efficient parcel distribution. Reduced delivery times and fuel-efficient routes lead to diminished emissions, making urban logistics more sustainable.
Bolstering Public Awareness:
Publicly accessible GPS tracker Canada data can be used to create awareness campaigns. By showcasing real-time reductions in traffic congestion and emissions, citizens are encouraged to opt for eco-friendly transportation alternatives. This heightened awareness can lead to a collective mindset shift towards greener commuting choices.
Conclusion:
Vehicle GPS tracking Canada offers a multifaceted approach to mitigating carbon emissions in cities. By optimizing routes, minimizing idle time, promoting eco-friendly driving practices, optimizing fleets, encouraging public transport usage, and facilitating data-driven policy-making, GPS Canada Track offers a sustainable solution to the challenges posed by urban transportation. Excerpt from this article: Officials at the San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department are asking others and the surrounding areas to be cautious about potential mountain lions in Central Texas. Officials said the message comes after the department received a call about a potential sighting of a mountain lion at Upper Purgatory Creek Natural Area in San Marcos on Sunday, February 12. [...] In Central Texas, it’s extremely rare to see a mountain lion in person, according to a report from the San Antonio Express-News. [...] Only one mountain lion has been confirmed in Bexar County in the past decade, on November 24, 2013, according to TPWD. [End of excerpt.]

Excerpt from this article: A Nebraska mountain lion that found itself in a sanctuary in Indiana after a 700-mile journey through four states is now looking for one last souvenir: a name. Back in the fall, the big cat made its way from the scenic Niobrara River valley all the way to suburban Springfield, Illinois, according to the GPS tracker that Nebraska Game and Parks had tagged it with a year prior. "A lot of people were watching him," said [the director of an “exotic feline rescue center”] in Center Point, Indiana, where the mountain lion has been since October. When the lion overstayed its welcome near Springfield, it was sedated by federal wildlife officials, who offered to return it to Nebraska. Nebraska declined.’ [...] "I'm incredibly impressed with this animal; he crossed both the Missouri and Mississippi rivers [...]." [End of excerpt.]

Ozarks and Missouri:
Tumblr media
Headline and screenshot from: Julia Wilson. “Mountain lions in Missouri? We’re seeing more than usual this winter.” Columbia Missourian. 16 February 2023.
Excerpt from this article: Footage from a trail camera taken Jan. 3 confirmed that a roaming mountain lion made a rare appearance in northern Boone County. Since then, the Missouri Department of Conservation documented three additional sightings around the state last month — one in Callaway County, another in Montgomery County and a third that was hit by a vehicle south of St. Louis.  Reports of mountain lions, also known as cougars, pumas and panthers, have increased over the past decade in the state. Between 2013 and 2022, a total of 65 were counted around Missouri. Compare that to the years between 1994 and 2006, when only 12 were spotted. [...] The animals may come from an established colony in the Black Hills, cross Nebraska and wander into Missouri, according to the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. Missouri’s extensive forest coverage, which includes 35% of state acreage, then becomes an ideal destination for the animals. Mountain lions have roamed Missouri since pre-settlement times. Their range crosses the western hemisphere from Canada to southern Chile. [...] Although they are seen across the state, over half of all sightings have been documented within 40 miles of Mark Twain National Forest in southeast Missouri. [...] Trophy hunting by early colonists wiped out most of the population east of the Mississippi River. [...] Except for the recent encounter in Franklin County where a lion was hit by a vehicle, the last documented human contact occurred in December 2021 during another vehicle collision. [End of excerpt.]

Yellowjackets is a show about trauma. I don't know what else to tell you.
Alright, blood hive, here we go again.
We're about halfway through season 2 at this point, and I remain more convinced than ever that a large portion of the viewing public is not fundamentally listening to what the wilderness the showrunners are trying to say. If you're looking for a singular capital-R Reason for everything we see in the show, you're looking at the wrong stuff. So here are some more thoughts.
(Spoilers for all of Yellowjackets up to S2E5, "Two Truths and a Lie")
One: Yellowjackets is a show about trauma and its relationship to magical thinking.
I get another grey hair every time I see someone trying to puzzle out just what is in the woods.
There's nothing in the woods, y'all. Nothing. Until I'm proven wrong by the show itself, this is the hill I will stubbornly die on. But show has been EXTREMELY consistent this whole time in its ambiguity, and in my opinion anyone using the red string and thumbtacks approach to Yellowjackets is being played for a fool. It doesn’t matter if there’s actually an entity in the woods (there isn’t), or if Lottie actually has powers (she doesn’t); what matters is that the survivors are clinging to any answers they can grasp in a situation full of unknowns, and so are we. Part of what’s so devastating about their plight is that there’s no real reason for any of it. This is the basis for literally every religion humans have ever had; we’ve been grasping at ritual and magical thinking for millennia. We are observing the growth of that dependence and ritual right now, in the second season. We are also seeing the consequences of that situation in the future. We are seeing how the power of thought can provide both comfort and further trauma.
I suspect that we will never learn the meaning behind the mysterious symbol. I've seen theories that it's a witch's mark, or even that it's a miner's signal and that all the weird stuff happening to the Yellowjackets is the result of mercury poisoning because they're inadvertently on top of an old mine. That's a nice theory, but I don't think it's correct, and I also don't think it should be revealed anyway. It doesn't ultimately matter what the symbol meant to the dead guy or his cabin; what matters is what the symbol represents for the Yellowjackets themselves.
Two: Yellowjackets is a show about trauma and the way it twists the unknown.
I am fascinated but frustrated by the apparent age split with fans. It seems to me that there's a pretty good-sized gap between the older fans of the show, who would have been kids/teenagers in the 90s (including me), and the gen Z viewers, the latter of which seem unable to really really understand just how wild the wilderness is. The generational split here is with those who remember how VCRs work because we had them and those who have never needed to know. It's a split between we who went through our primary school years without access to Wikipedia and those who have had the wealth of human knowledge in their pockets since they were children.
I’ve watched people do all sorts of questioning and speculating, and it almost always traces back to whether or not you understand how the world worked before smartphones, AKA most of human history. Let me answer some of those questions right now off the top of my head:
How could the Yellowjackets not be found for 19 months?
People used to just fucking vanish, fam. We did not have GPS, we did not have trackers, we barely had battery-powered walkmen. People vanished all the time, and were never ever seen again. Sometimes they did it on purpose, and a lot of the time they disappeared by accident or malice, and a lot of times they died. 1996 doesn't seem that long ago in terms of technology, but it is. People still go missing to this day, even with all our tech tracking us everywhere. Canada is fucking huge and a lot of it is mostly wilderness. Here's a photo I found from Statistics Canada with the population density of Ontario; the black areas represent places where there's basically goddamn nothing but wilderness.
Tumblr media
2. How was there no road to the Cabin Guy's Cabin? How did he get there? How did he get supplies there?
He had a plane, and also, once again: people used to disappear all the time. In his case, he seems to have done it on purpose.
3. How could Shauna possibly deliver a child in those conditions? How could the baby be getting the nutrients it needs?
People did this successfully for tens of thousands of years, you guys. You're literally reading this post because our ancestors successfully birthed children in the middle of fucking nowhere with zero medical aid or support.
4. How could Lottie know about the bear or the starlings or or or...?
Easy: she doesn't. Not entirely, anyway. She's an empathetic person who's really good at dealing with the emotions of other people and has a sense of spirituality that appears brave and confident, and people in dire situations with a lot of chaos will depend on that with their lives.
And speaking of Lottie...
Three: Yellowjackets is a show about trauma and how it forces you to transform.
At the end of last season I believed that we were going to get a Lottie Villain Era, just like everyone else. I do not believe that now.
Everything we have seen of Lottie shows a girl who was subjected to medical abuse and/or neglect from a very very young age. Regardless of her actual powers or lack thereof, she was placed on medication by her parents and didn't come off of it until she was in a super traumatizing situation in the wilderness. During this most recent season, we have seen both Teenage and Adult Lottie struggle with her role as a spiritual leader and advisor; she's good at it, but it drains her. It isn't something she's doing out of a desire for power or control: it's something she's doing as a trauma response. That trauma response is helping others, so she keeps doing it, but it's still a trauma response. Trauma transforms you into somebody new, over and over again. The scars you bear become your armor, and then your mask, and then it's hard to know where you end and the trauma begins.
Taissa, too, is transformed by trauma. Her other self is a trauma response, similar to alters in a DID system. It comes to the front when Taissa can't deal, and it's both helpful and harmful. I'm willing to bet a lot of her college years were spent sleepwalking, as the Other One dealt with exams and soccer games and law school. Any one of us with dissociative trauma responses can speak to the way that dissociation can be a savior and an abuser in the same breath.
Four: Yellowjackets is a show about trauma and how it compounds on itself.
This most recent episode showed Natalie coming to a realization about the last time she saw Travis, and she says the words we've heard in the season trailers: there was something in the woods, something they brought back with them. Or maybe it was in them the whole time.
In my previous essay I talked about how each Yellowjacket arrived in the woods with her own traumas strapped to her back. In my mind, that's what Natalie is talking about. There is no entity in the woods to blame for all of this, no ghost or witch who can be credited with the trauma the girls experienced and inflicted. There is only the trauma itself, in all its many shapes and sizes, in all the ways it fills in the gaps and makes shadows dance by firelight and drives us to the very brink of madness, holding us back by a fraying tether.
Yellowjackets is a show about trauma. The show's theme song rings out every episode: No return, no return, no reason. There is no return to the way things were. There is no return that can erase what you've been through. There is no reason for all of this, except for the one that's been very explicitly outlined via themes and story and dialogue and flashbacks and framing.
Yellowjackets is a show about trauma. It's the only answer we have, and I suspect--and hope--that it's the only answer we're ever going to get.

It’s not easy to swim 175 km (109 mi.) when you’re starving to death. It’s not easy either to try to survive when you’re shedding body weight at a rate of 1 kg (2.2 lbs.) a day.
And it might be hardest — or at least most tragic — of all if you’re a nursing mom and your calorie intake has dropped so low that you can no longer produce the milk you need to care for your young.
As a new paper in Nature Communications reveals, all of those challenges and more are facing the world’s polar bears, thanks to vanishing sea ice in our warming world, denying the animals a platform that they need to hunt for seals.
If the trend isn’t reversed soon, the estimated 26,000 polar bears in the wild could start to lose their hold on survival before the middle of this century.
The researchers were less interested in establishing the fact of the bears’ food plight; scientists are already aware of that problem.
What they were more focused on learning was both how gravely the nutritional loss is affecting the animals’ health and the alternative food sources they’re scrounging for on land.
To do their work, the scientists followed 20 different polar bears in Manitoba, Canada, from 2019 to 2022, fitting them with GPS trackers and video collars and periodically tranquilizing them and analyzing their blood, body mass, daily energy expenditure — basically a measure of calories coming in versus calories going out — and more.
Tumblr media
“The polar bears in Hudson Bay [Canada] are probably at the edge of the range at which they can survive right now,” says Anthony Pagano, a research biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey and the lead author of the paper.
“Most of the modeling work suggests that around 2050, they are going to be on land and away from their primary habitat [on the ice].”
The contraction in range of the Hudson Bay community is likely to be reflected in the ranges of the 18 other polar bear subpopulations scattered throughout the Arctic as well.
Across the arc of the study, the data Pagano and his colleagues gathered was troubling.
Weight loss varied from bear to bear, with the daily loss of 1 kg representing just an average.
Some of the subject animals dropped up to 1.7 kg (3.75 lbs) every 24 hours.
That may not seem like much when an adult male polar bear can tip the scales at 550 kg (1,200 lbs) and a female at 320 kg (700 lbs), but it can add up fast.
And with less available to eat, the hungry bears have to travel farther and farther distances to find their next meal.
Tumblr media
The individual that swam 175 km — a young female — set the record among the bears studied, but another, older female also covered 120 km (75 mi).
The endurance swims in search of food are energy-intensive and often fruitless for the bears.
They are efficient hunters when they’ve got the purchase of ice beneath them, Pagano and his colleagues explain, but they are clumsy when they are going after seals and trying to swim at the same time.
That leaves them scavenging on land for foods they would not ordinarily eat — and getting little payoff for their efforts.
“Polar bears are feeding on ducks and geese — catching them when they’re flightless and molting — as well as on their eggs,” Pagano says.
Other foods on the desperate bears’ menus included berries and other vegetation, bones, antlers and, in one case, a beluga whale carcass.
None of that fare is as calorie-rich as a steady diet of live, blubber-packed seals.
Some of the bears vigorously sought out these alternative sources of nutrition; others opted for a different strategy: resting and conserving the energy contained in their body mass.
The latter approach costs stored calories, but so does the former, as all of the plodding and searching burns through energy too.
Tumblr media
“The amount of body tissue they were burning to try and find those terrestrial foods was basically the same as what they’d get from eating those terrestrial foods,” Pagano says. “So there’s no actual benefit.”
The researchers were surprised to find that the bears were going through not just fat stores to compensate for the poor rations but lean muscle tissue too.
Pagano is not certain why their metabolisms would adopt that strategy, but he has some ideas.
“There's some thought that burning lean body mass might be more energetically efficient in some respects relative to burning body fats,” he says.
“Also, conserving their body fat might provide them better thermal regulation once the winter and the ice return.”
That seasonal freeze-over is shorter than it used to be — though not by a lot.
Tumblr media
In the 1980s, polar bears were on land for about 110 days out of the year, with no need to eat terrestrial foods since the fat deposits they’d accumulate thanks to wintertime seal-hunting was enough to carry them the rest of the year.
Now they're off the ice for 130 days on average.
It’s a measure of the nutritional knife’s-edge on which the bears operate that just 20 days can make the difference between whether they live and thrive or starve and die.
The individuals most likely to perish when food supplies are poor are young adults — due to their less-developed hunting skills — and cubs, whose principal source of nutrition, their mother’s milk, can vanish in lean times.
“If females are fasting for extended periods, they will actually stop lactating,” says Pagano.
Full-grown bears are by no means immune to danger, however.
The authors cite earlier research predicting that the adult male population could decrease by 24% if the ice-free summer season increases to 180 days.
This is especially so given the enormous energy intake — about 22,500 calories per day — that the big males need to maintain their body weight.
Polar bears aren’t the only species menaced by these findings. Humans are in harm’s way too.
The more time bears spend off the ice and on land, the greater the likelihood they will wander into cities and towns in search of something to eat — and residents could easily be hurt or attacked if they get in the way of the hungry animals.
People might also even be seen as sources of prey.
“When polar bears are on land, they act like other bears and become omnivores,” says Pagano. “It does raise the potential for human-bear interactions.”

Factors Affecting Commercial Auto Insurance Rates in Toronto
As a business owner in Toronto, you know operating vehicles is essential. But commercial auto insurance Toronto? Not so exciting. Rates can vary wildly - it's crucial to understand what factors impact those premiums. Let's break it down.
1. Your Business Operations
What kind of vehicles your business uses matters. Semis and haulers cost way more to insure than sedans. Same goes for how you use those vehicles. Long-haul trucking across Canada carries higher risk than local deliveries. Taxis and rideshares get hit hardest due to their increased mileage and passenger liability.
2. Your Drivers
Insurers scrutinize who's behind the wheel. A roster of young drivers with spotty records? You'll pay through the nose. Experienced, clean-driving staff helps keep rates down. Frequent driver turnover is also a red flag.
3. Claims History
A blemish-free history works in your favor when purchasing commercial auto insurance Toronto. But file just one major claim and brace for premium hikes - sometimes substantially. At-fault collisions, costly repairs, high payouts...insurers have little patience for frequent claimers.
4. Security Measures
Taking proactive steps to enhance safety and security can pay dividends. Installing GPS trackers, dash cams, and even mandating safe driver training. It can be anything demonstrating your commitment to risk mitigation.
5. Location Matters
Dense urban areas like downtown Toronto simply pose higher risks for accidents, theft, and other costly incidents. If your fleet regularly navigates these high-risk zones, you're paying more for that exposure.
6. Deductibles
Like personal auto policies, higher deductibles mean lower premiums (and vice versa). Carefully weighing your up-front savings against out-of-pocket risks is key.
7. Coverage Levels
Choosing lower coverage limits translates to cheaper premiums. But is skimping worth jeopardizing protection? Most business owners opt for adequate liability coverage despite the extra cost.
Top Commercial Auto Insurance Factors Summed Up:
So to recap, your rates hinge on:
Type of vehicles/usage
Driver hiring standards
Prior claims history
Safety protocols in place
Geographic territories
Chosen deductible amounts
Level of coverages
While premiums are unavoidable, being smart about mitigating risk factors puts you in control. Affordable commercial auto insurance Toronto is possible with some strategizing.
Whether hauling payloads or shuttling employees, commercial auto insurance is non-negotiable. Rates can sting, but understanding the factors allows you to make smart choices that benefit your bottom line.
Work with an experienced Toronto insurance broker to capitalize on discounts. They will build a policy that makes sense for YOUR unique business needs.

Polar Bears are Trying to Adapt to a Warming Arctic. It’s Not Working.
The Bears Can’t Thrive on Land, a Concerning Discovery as Sea Ice Continues to Disappear at a Rapid Pace, a New Study Says
— By Stefan Lovgren | February 13, 2024
For the polar bears of Manitoba, Canada, the sea ice that envelops western Hudson Bay for most of the year is the ideal hunting ground for a feast of blubber-rich seals. But then come the dog days of summer, when the ice melts and the bears are forced onto land. There, life is no picnic for these giant creatures.
Deprived of adequate food supplies, the bears must live off their fat reserves for several months. Now, climate change is causing that wait to grow even longer, as warming temperatures melt the sea ice earlier in the spring and solidifies it later in the fall. The Arctic, research shows, is warming twice as fast as the rest of the world. The question is: How will polar bears adapt to more time spent on land?
The answer, according to a new study published in Nature this week, is not very well. The study shows the carnivores forage for food, such as birds and berries, rather than resting, which is what scientists thought most bears did while on land. But the study also concludes that doing so causes the bears to spend as much extra energy as they gain from eating the food. During the study's three-week research period, bears lost an average of more than three pounds of weight each day while waiting for the ice to form again.
“There’s no winning strategy” for the bears, says study leader Anthony Pagano, a research wildlife biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Anchorage, Alaska. “They will not be able to find the food they need on land.”
Forced to spend longer periods on land without sufficient food could cause vulnerable individuals, especially young bears, to suffer from starvation, scientists warn, eventually endangering the survival of entire populations.
With polar bears increasingly moving into new land spaces in search of food, dangerous confrontations with humans are also likely to increase, researchers say.
Tumblr media
Today is International Polar Bear Day … and we are discovering how the animals (above) are adapting to a warming environment. In Manitoba, Canada, the sea ice that covers western Hudson Bay for most of the year serves as their hunting ground and haven. Surprisingly Active
Polar bears live in 19 regions across the Arctic, from Canada to Greenland to Russia. While some populations live on permanent ice, others inhabit seasonal ice. Climate change has caused ice loss to some degree in all the regions, leading to drastic population declines. As a result, the International Union for Conservation of Nature lists polar bears as vulnerable to extinction.
Between 1979 and 2015, the length of time without ice in western Hudson Bay has risen by three weeks, according to the study. About 800 polar bears dwell in the western side of Hudson Bay, a decline of 30 percent since 1980. Those bears now spend an average of 130 days on land a year, a number expected to increase by 5 to 10 days per decade in the future.
To glean how the polar bears spend their time on land, Pagano and his team placed GPS-enabled video trackers on 20 Hudson Bay bears for three-week periods in the summers between 2019 and 2022. The scientists tracked the animals’ diet, movement, behavior, changes in body mass, and how much energy they exerted each day.
“Previously we only had snippets [of information] on what the bears do on land,” says Pagano, who led a similar study several years ago focusing on the bears’ activity on sea ice.
The behavior of the bears varied wildly. Three made long swims in open water, with one female swimming over a hundred miles. Video footage revealed the bear finding a dead beluga whale during her swim, but that she was unable to feed on it. “It highlighted how the bears are not able to eat in open water,” says Pagano.
He says the findings surprised him and his colleagues, who had thought polar bears mostly minimized their activity while on land to conserve energy.
While adult males did indeed spend almost all their time resting—reducing their energy expenditure on land to levels similar to hibernating bears—70 percent of the bears were shown to actively move around in search of food sources, which included berries, grasses, and bird and caribou carcasses. Those foods are far less energy rich than a seal's blubber.
Nineteen of 20 bears—regardless of age, sex, or size—lost weight.
The study predicts that a quarter of adult males, the largest and most resilient individuals that can weigh up to 1,700 pounds, would start running into starvation issues after 180 days on land. But more vulnerable individuals, such as young bears, would get to such a point far sooner.

Survival of the Fattest
Andrew Derocher, a Biology Professor at the University of Alberta in Canada who has long studied polar bears, points out that some individuals are in better shape than others.
“Some animals can go many, many months before they’re in trouble, while others may run out of energy in a matter of weeks,” says Derocher, who wasn't involved in the study. He says the fatter a bear is from the months of feeding on the sea ice, the better it can deal with the ice-free period. “I call it survival of the fattest,” he says.
With polar bears spending more time on land and actively moving about the landscape in search of food, “there’s an element of desperation that goes on with some of these individual bears that puts them into potential conflict with people."
In the past, the polar bears have usually come to shore and congregated near the town of Churchill in Manitoba, which has a long history of managing polar bears, including maintaining a holding facility known as “polar bear jail” where dangerous bears are held before being relocated far from town.
But there are now signs that more polar bears may be migrating farther north in search of sea ice, potentially moving into communities that are nowhere near as well set up to deal with problem bears as Churchill is.
“These bears may smell some dog food and go right in,” says Derocher. “It’s not like they want to feed on our garbage. They want to go out on the ice and start hunting seals. But increasingly they’re stuck on land.”
