What Is Embroidery And What Are The Main Types Of Embroidery?
If we want to define it in the simplest way, we can say that embroidery is the artisan technique by which textile pieces are decorated with the help of a needle and using a thread. However, there is much more to say about the importance of this technique. What was traditionally dismissed as a minor creative activity is now recognized as an artistic expression. Learn more about this exciting activity, which you can start practicing right now.
What are the main types of embroidery?
Embroidery has a long history and it is amazing to discover that it has been present in practically every culture in the world for centuries. Although the techniques may vary, some stitches are almost universal and the principle of needle use is almost always the same. Embroidery almost certainly derived from sewing. Before the industrialization of textiles, people made their garments by hand, with the help of needle and thread. At some point, the interest arose to decorate the garments, to denote certain social aspects or to reflect the personality as a means of expression.
The arrival of industrialization and the looms
The arrival of industrialization affected the world of embroidery. The Jacquard loom (a power loom invented by Joseph Marie Jacquard in 1801) wove complex brocade and damask patterns with a punched card system, precursors to the first data systems used from telegraphs to the first computers. This machine revolutionized the industry and accelerated the production of embroidery which, until then, was painstaking and very laborious work.
Later, the Schiffli embroidery machine would complete the automation process, until the hands were no longer necessary for embroidery. Twinkle Industries is the pioneer in producing high-quality Schiffli embroidery fabric at affordable prices and according to your custom demand. From nylon laces to embroidery laces, you can purchase genuine fabric online at Twinkle Industries.
Most popular embroidery types
In general, you can start embroidering right away with a free technique if you know the most basic stitches. If you want to follow some of the more elaborate techniques, in this article we compile some of them. Some of the most popular techniques are –
Cross-stitch: Typically on an Aida fabric, cross-shaped stitches are created that form the design. Contemporary examples recreate pixel art by the square finish of each stitch.
Embroidered relief: With slightly more complex decorative stitches, you can add volume to your embroidery.
Needle Painting: It is a technique with which great realism is achieved. Imagine that your needle is a brush and the thread is paint, you will use painting and drawing techniques to compose images.
Painting and embroidery: You can mix textile paint, with materials such as watercolor or acrylic, to create spectacular pieces on fabric that you paint by hand.
Miniature embroidery: It is a trend in which pieces of even millimeters are created.
What materials do I need to start embroidering?
Needle
The most essential material is the needle. You can find needles in many sizes and types, but it's a good idea to start with special embroidery needles, known simply as embroidery needles. There are specific needles for different embroidery techniques –
· Crewel embroidery needle: It is a type of embroidery with wool.
· Punch needle or magic needle: It embroiders quickly creating rich textures.
· Kantian needle: A special needle for this technique that creates textures.
· French embroidery: It is used to add beads or rhinestones, very typical of haute couture dresses. Beads can also be added without using this needle.
Depending on the material you use, you will want to experiment with needles of different sizes.
Thread
There are specially made threads for embroidery. The best known is the cotton embroidery thread, which comes in six strands. You can separate the strands depending on the finish you want to achieve. Cotton pearl thread is also widely used in embroidery, and is characterized by its shiny, polished finish. It is manufactured in different thicknesses. You can also embroider with wool, rayon, silk, metallic finish threads. In any embroidery supply store you will see the wide variety of materials and colors.
Frame
A great idea, especially if you are a beginner, is to use a hoop. It allows you to create tension in the fabric, so that your stitches are secured in it. An advantage of the hoop is that you can use it directly to decorate your walls with your embroidered pieces.
Cloth
The best things to start with are cotton fabrics and other natural fibers. You don't want to start one with a weave that is too tight or too loose. A popular fabric is the Aida, typical of cross-stitch embroidery. Also many people choose fabrics made of silk, felt, canvas, linen and wool. You can embroider on practically any type of fabric.
Embroidery and its uses in garments and decoration
By pure thread and stitch, embroidery is added to all kinds of garments. Just as Crochet Laces were the rage at one time, today embroidered fabrics are stomping on stained glass, especially on shirts and dresses. They have become a distinctive detail. The arrival of spring and the heat only means one thing: buying a mini dress with embroidery is a good investment for those moments when you need to shine and be the most chic of a party, cocktail or meeting at work. Also the pants will add embroidery to your designs. They will be seen a lot in jeans and also in other genres.
If you dare to embroider it yourself, remember to buy threads that do not fade, so that the garment is not ruined. The hand-embroidered shirts will be the star of this season. They will be seen a lot on different types of fabric in white and light blue, and also in super intense tones. If we are a little afraid of embroidery on clothes or do not know how to combine it with our style, a good option is to resort to purses, bags, wallets or other accessories with some embroidery. Embroidery is also going strong in decoration. The revaluation of craftsmanship makes more and more people want to put their stamp on different objects, such as pillows, squares, towels, curtains, tablecloths and placemats, etc.
Like Embroidery fabric, modern garments industries also fond to Lycra Fabrics.Buy genuine quality fabrics from Twinkle Industries.

“This is sacred ground. If this isn’t worth preserving, what is?” Richard Holmes.
Bletchley Park was built, in its mansion (1) and grounds, in 1883 for banker and politician, Herbert Leon, who supported the Liberal Party, was a friend of David Lloyd George and other leading lights in the party, and was part of that new breed of financiers and industrialists who nudged out the old aristocracy as the leaders of the nation, while aping their lifestyle.
(Leon was Jewish, and until 1858 men of his faith were not allowed to sit in Parliament; they were not made fully equal with Christians until 1890, though as you can see Leon was fully establishing himself as a country gentleman without ever converting to Christianity as other people of Jewish heritage had felt the need to do before and after 1858).
After Leon died in 1926 his wife, Fanny, lived here until 1937. Although he had two children, they planned to sell the land for housing, until in 1938 the far-sighted Admiral Hugh Sinclair bought it for the new Secret Intelligence Service, later MI6.
Sinclair foresaw that the nation would need such a site, near a railway station with links to London and leading universities, built in 1838-9, one of the main reasons Leon moved to the area, and still going (albeit torrential rain slowed down my journey to my brother’s house in Bedford by two hours!) but far enough from London and industrial towns to avoid being bombed, especially since all road signs were removed in 1940 in case of invasion.
Although you can see the rain, very rare for south-east England in summer, I made my way through the museums at which geniuses such as Alan Turing and the unsung heroes of Bletchley are celebrated; as well as the library and computer rooms, and the National Radio Centre and National Museum of Computing, reflecting that the weather was actually like this in June 1944!
Here, mathematicians and male and female workers of all kinds, many of them Poles who fled their country after it was invaded in 1939 and brought their knowledge of mathematics and Nazi activity here (9 is a memorial which honours them, and 10 is for all Bletchley workers) did hitherto unheard-of work and helped crack the Japanese Purple code and the Nazi Enigma and Lorenz codes, once thought unbreakable).
They were presided over by John Tiltman, head of the Military Section, Commander Alastair Dennison, head of GC & CS until 1942, and Commander Edward Travis, who took over in 1942.
D Day, the Allied invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944 which sealed the liberation of Europe, was another project on which the Bletchley men and women were at the heart; using their knowledge of coding, they fabricated an operation called Operation Fortitude, convincing Hitler that they would attack Calais, and diverting the Nazis from the real operation.
After the war, Bletchley was little used; it was a teacher training college and a GPO site, but didn’t find a permanent use. Travis served as the head of GCHQ, but it was not based here; only in 1974 did the British government admit what had happened here during WW2, and by then the site was empty and was almost built on in 1990. Mercifully, it was turned into a museum in 1994 and restored between 2011 and 2014.
Couples would often court around the lake, and form lifelong marriages having met at Bletchley people they would not have ever set eyes on in peacetime. They all signed the Official Secrets Act though, and as Queen Elizabeth II acknowledged in 2011, “some of their families will never know the extent of their contribution”.
From the bicycles to the vintage cars, to the ballroom (7) and the rather utilitarian cinema (8), the feel of life at Bletchley in wartime is preserved; unlike most of Britain, it was a place where talent mattered more than birth or wealth, and eccentric geniuses could find a home.
(Sadly, not all of Britain was like this, as Turing found when he made the ‘mistake’ of being openly gay and finding that the tolerance and acceptance he found at Bletchley was not always found in the outside world; please see my other post on him).
But since 1994, we have been giving Turing ahd his colleagues the recognition many of them never got in life, and I’ll give the last word to frontline soldier Les Wagar, from Canada, who was as grateful as you should be for the help given to him on D Day:
“We knew the width of the beach we had to cross, the mines we had to avoid, the bunkers, the gun positions, the wall we had to get over or through, the streets and the buildings of the town we had to take, the minefields, the possible enemy strength, the perimiter we had to establish for the next wave to go forward...”

Between the not-yet and the no longer, modular relics preserve the only memory of its context.
Portrayed as a dream, the Metabolist capsules reintroduce lost histories, in an attempt to salvage the true character of the city, rather than creating something superficial and completely new.
Housed within the GPO, this is the first iteration of the movement. A post office. Resurrecting the lost memory of what it once was.
Reborn from the building blocks of its own demise, the object synthesises the tension between the past, present and future.
The GPO begins to contain a metabolic Melbourne, a prototype city, represented as an arcade, also housing my ideas throughout this studio.
As part of the studio narrative:
The role of memory in architectural perception is referenced as the project incorporating the history of the site: The first module is a post office. Like what the GPO once was.
Not dissimilar to my artist residence weeks ago, the project embodies the manic process of re-assigning the ready-made as an artwork. Here, a museum or a service.
Watching life unfold next to us in the position of the other, was explored in my office/apartment blocks, also captured in this project, as the semi-translucent curtains hide and reveal the boundary between function and relic.
The modular insertion of an unfamiliar program, harnessing the existing framework was explored in mid-sem balcony project.
Similarly, without an architectural insertion to bridge the gap between observation and function, a private bathroom is not used by the public, it is destined to only observed by the city, the same way we watch a relic in a museum.
The project was included on the Association Architecture Wikipedia page because it targets history as a fabric to be repurposed.
The prototype city aims to resurrect the historical foundations it was laid upon, whilst also challenging our tendency to create something entirely new, as seen on arch daily.
That narrative lacks the metaphysical calm which attached to the decay. Ware and tare is part of the architecture, not something to be dismissed and forgotten.
Association Architecture also wrestles with this process, reinvigorating the unused ruins which are peppered throughout our city.
It is unclear whether the post office is operational. The sign is put out every day. The plant is always watered. Sometimes mail is sent. And sometimes it lays there for months.
Does this make it a museum, or a service? An artwork, or an everyday?
Like a puppet, the GPO carries the second iteration of the metabolism: H&M: The second program of the site, only accessed through the first, maintaining the order of historical lineage.
The project also leaves stairs to nowhere: reiterating the element of time in architecture. In the future, something else will exist here. We are fools to think our completed product will be the final.
The project will continue to manifest at the same pace as history.
Finally, above all else, today’s project proposes a new age of harmony between the past present and future, rather than the need to dominate it.
