RANDOM PROMPTS
assorted list of prompts that I have used across the years for various drabbles and starters. adjust and change pronouns as necessary. please don't add to this list as I may make a second part.
“Well, what can I say? I’m a badass.”
“Why didn’t you listen to me?”
“You’re always number one."
"I love you. You enormously stubborn pain in the ass."
"You can’t keep it all inside, you know? Bottling it up won’t do any good"
"You haven’t been yourself lately."
"Just shut up and kiss me."
"You’ve thought about this, haven’t you?"
"Do I get bonus points if I act like I care?"
"Wait! What if we get caught?"
"Why are we whispering?"
"You don’t see me."
"Hey, I know you’re hurting.. but you’re not alone, okay?"
"I couldn’t sleep.”
“You could have died.“
“We need to talk about what happened last night."
"You said you'd be there."
"This was a mistake."
"Were you ever going to tell me?"
"It's hard to forget someone who gave you so much to remember."
"I don't remember what it feel like to not be broken."
"You knew about this all along, didn't you?"
"It doesn't matter who hurt you, or broke you down, what matters is who you smile again."
"Just talk to me, please."
"I'll never let you go."
"I am coming with you."
"I fear a cage."
"To the ends of the Earth, would you follow me?"

That blank grey orb darted to the gentle hold on his hand, before resting on it’s owner- and paused. He knew Beleg. Most of the Northern Rangers knew the famous elven bowman on sight but for years, Arathorn had kept his soulmate’s name hidden from outside of his kin. A move that had been instinctive to protect himself.
“I.. I don’t remember getting here..”
"I am here." he said softly, not wanting to startle Arathorn any further than he already had. He brushed the back of his hand with his thumb, tender and anxious. "You are safe, in Elrond's care, and mine."

Arathorn needed little encouragement to lean against him, resting his head against Beleg's shoulder with a tired sigh. Although he was rather pale and cold to the touch. "It was you or the floor." in fairness, he just wanted to sit.
"Had to make a visit to some of the tombs on the Barrow-downs. The barrow-wights didn't appreciate the disturbance."

[ nightmare ] from the soulmates prompts.
(you knew this would be coming didn't you? <3 choose the setting, universe, etc.)
Hal wasn't known for her ability to sleep. Only when she felt completely safe, did rest finally come. But it wasn't always peaceful and most of the time, she woke unrested. Finding her soulmate was something that few thought she would do. Not that it came as a surprise, given the nature of her nightmares.
Falling asleep in Rivendell had not been planned but the Dwarves were there, so the young Ranger felt safe. Yet her dreams weren't peaceful this time. Dark grey eyes blinked as she found herself standing within Bree. Watching a much younger 9 year old peer around the legs of men dressed in the neutral colours of the Dúnedain.
"I'm not someone you'd want as a soulmate..."

Most would say that having an extraordinarily high pain threshold was a good thing, especially when it came to being a Ranger. But it wasn't. Being unable to feel the pain meant that she couldn't tell how bad the injuries were or if there were any injuries at all. Normally Hal would have refused his assistance but this time, she didn't give even a token of protest. In fact she was rather grateful for his help, not that any of those words would be spoken anytime soon.
It wasn't the first time that the dark eyed Dúnadan had fought against the Uruk-hai. The journey South meant that the Grey Company had kept coming into contact with those who followed Sauron and in a lesser way, Saruman. Neither was it the first time that she had been injured by them, although she had never been poisoned before. Her kin were a different matter however; they had been poisoned in fights with Orcs and they all carried antidotes in their medical kits.
A slight nod was the only response Hal gave to his soft words of encouragement, trying not to detach emotionally from the situation. But a few minutes after Boromir called out, she leant against him heavily as she was tiring out far faster than normal. "Stronger poison than.. before... Normal antidotes won't.. work..."
Aragorn arrived quickly with Legolas on his heels, storm blue eyes sharp as he took in the situation quickly. "Put her down, Boromir. She won't make it to camp otherwise." He replied, pulling a small vial of blue liquid from his medical kit.

❝  sometimes i get these phantom pains i guess you could say.  little aches and i find them oddly comforting.  because my soul still hurts even if my body is healed.  ❞ (Arathorn)
Arathorn was curled against Beleg’s side, one arm wrapped around that of his sleeping son. He listened quietly, before shifting his gaze to focus upon his partner.    “Also means you’re still alive. Something I’m glad about.”

It was always fun to train with one of the elves but more so, Beleg or Glorfindel. They never counted steps, preferring more to use their speed and the land around them. Which worked for most people but when it came to Beleg; not today at least. The soft spoken Esteldin Commander let the corner of their lips lift up into a slight smile when they were pinned.
  ”Victory is definitely yours.”

For: Myndilon :: @roquenxnar Unspecified Muse: Arathorn
There was a point at which his level of patience had a tendency to just... evaporate. And when that happened, it didn't bode well. Not many people actually managed to push him to that point though and those who did, preferred not to repeat the experience. Provided that they weren't dead that was; this was usually reserved for Orcs and anything or anyone in that category of evil.
Elladan and Elrohir on the other hand?
They were in a category all of their own. Simply because they liked to try and test his patience more than once. Not that Arathorn had ever lost his temper with them yet. ...Although it wasn't from lack of trying. As much he appreciated the twins for getting him back to Rivendell in time to save his life, he also had a limit.
A lone slate grey eye gazed out across the Bruinen Ford, hidden from sight. The Dunedain Chieftain wasn't in the slightest bit bothered about making himself known to folk. Elrond knew where to find if he was needed as did some of his kin. But no one else did and he was grateful for that.
As the last of the sunlight started to fade away, Arathorn was thinking about moving to visit Tornhad. At least, until he heard footsteps nearing and stood up to see who it was. Not at all surprised to see the old elf.
"Myndilon."

The soft spoken Dúnadan hadn’t realised quite how much she had needed Éomer’s reassurance about Theo, until tension visibly faded from her. She was happy to stay there, leaning against the taller man and, unnoticed by her, completely relaxed. Something that was rare now.
Dark eyes shifted to meet his own, relying on more than just his words. Although Hal trusted the Horse-lord, time and experience had made her apt at checking emotions and body language to make sure it matched. Not that she had expected anything different off him.
“I didn’t want to move him anyway, Éomer. Not when you, the Rohirrim and Aldburg are all that he knows. And crossing the Rohan Gap is perilous enough now, even for experienced travellers. Taking the path over Caradhras by Lothlorien would have been my only option and that isn’t easy to traverse at the best of times, given the weather.”
Hal went back to watching Theo, aware that many were worried about the rising dangers of the Mountains. And the fears that she wouldn’t come out the other side, especially after Orcs had attacked her whilst crossing the Rohan Gap last time. That had NOT been a pleasant discussion when the Third Marshal discovered her sorting her injuries out on her own.
Continued from here. For @rangers-arecool.
♘ ♘ ♘
Éomer felt Hal leaning into him and a slight, contented smile entered his face as he still kept an eye on the little boy playing. He knew Hal had been hurt and was healing, so thus allowed her what brought relief. Yet he dared not to let his body respond.
He quickly shook his head and returned his gaze to the ranger at his side when she suggested she could take Theo elsewhere. He had spoken of duty but regretted it not. In truth, he cared deeply for the boy and it would be sad to see him go away. He brought light and laughter to a dark time.
"No, Hal, he can stay here. A hole would he leave behind if you did so. He is no burden to me, or any of the folk who live here. Éowyn also does adore him. I did not mean to imply that he is too much."

@menelvagor :: halbarad | reply to this ::
Aragorn looked up with a small smile, before he straightened up and returned the touch lightly. Despite the concerns that been the reason for his visit here, he never minded seeing his old friend. Hence the reason why Arathorn had sent him out to Esteldin, instead of coming himself.
The warmth at seeing Halbarad quickly faded back to grimness at his question and he sighed, glancing down at the letter. “It is. But I would prefer not to discuss it out here, especially as it involves some of our kin.”

“There is evil there that does not sleep.”
-- From Hal for Hal on @fxrest-bcrn! :>
"Because it is barred from doing so, until it's bones are recovered and finally laid to rest for good." There was a eerie confirmation when a sudden rush of cold air came from out of nowhere at their words. But the gender-fluid Ranger didn't bat an eye at the chill, for they were far too used to it by now.

”Ada.” The little boy returned solemnly. Well as solemn as he could get when there was a massive grin on his face. He stopped just inside the main entrance to Imlad Gelair and let go of Beleg’s hand, before pointing in the direction of the inner part.
”Papa’s that way. People keep tryin’ to peek in.”

Aragorn shouldn't be stood here worrying about her, not when he had far more greater things to be worried about. Like the current fight to defend Minas Tirith and Gondor, which was being fought on the Pelennor Fields behind them. Injuries and death tended to be an occupational hazard when taking part in a battle or war. She was merely collateral damage.
Yet Hal knew he didn't think of it like that; knew that he didn't think of her like that. It was just the way her mind worked while detached from her emotions. She leaned into his touch slightly, her instincts easing momentarily. "I will." Ignoring his words wasn't something that she liked doing, especially not when he used that tone.
But then the dark eyed Ranger stepped back, breaking the contact and features closed off more than usual. "You're needed back out there, Aragorn. Before they lose what's left of their hope." I'll see what I can do to help in the city."
@rangers-arecool asked: [ 𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐭 ] : sender has gotten injured protecting the receiver. // Aragorn - Hal
He hated when Hal had done this. Though he understood why it was done, because she was protecting him it still didn't sit well with Aragorn that she would step in the line of fire when the attack was meant for him.
Checking the other over quickly, the concern upon his features turned to a softer expression for but a brief moment. Carefully, the brunette pulled her out of the battlefield making sure to hide her so that she could not be seen as he tended to the wound. With each, gentle touch his movement had been swift to remove whatever would be blocking him from the wound.
And once his eyes laid up on the red covering her, a grimace appeared upon his features as he took in the wound fully. It was deep but could be mended with time and rest - knowing how the other was, it remained to be seen if she would comply with such things. "I'm going to tend to your wound. Relax, rest - sleep if you need to."

[ mock ] your muse mocking mine. (For Almáriel) @zimrazagar
"I don't know why you're mocking me but it would be a good idea to stop. Now." Anyone else and the curtness would have been ignored. However. This was Almáriel. The young woman who had practically grown up alongside Isildur.
When her tone differed from it's normal warmth and cheerfulness, PEOPLE TOOK NOTICE. And the guards doubly so, for she was keeping an eye on Anárion for Elendil that afternoon.

He squeezed back gently, leaving his hand in Beleg's for the moment. Something that he knew Estel would pick up on rather fast.
"Well you're as tall as a tree and older than some of them. So tree elf." The little boy grinned mischievously at him, before tilting his head with unspoken confusion.
