teenage agnès in all her “too cool 4 school” young artist glory would probably express how profoundly she dislikes romcoms, because of how uninventive they are - both on story and on cinematic technique. more broadly, she doesn’t like films that feel like recorded theatre, where the camera just follows the characters, and most of the artistry and storytelling is done through dialogues. 

adult agnès still stands by that statement - but doesn’t restrict it to romcoms only, and acknowledges that some romcoms do better than this. adult agnès is a bit of an omnivore, who has learnt that there is something cool to learn or steal from every genre and almost any film - even the less ostentiously remarkable ones. hell, speed (1994) is a ridiculous movie, but is it her guilty pleasure because the action sequences are epic and nail-biting? hell yes!

agnès always says that her version of a midlife crisis will be that she will interrupt her career as an independent documentary and art filmmaker to make an action flick. something with tight-knit stunt sequences as crisp and over-the-top as jackie chan’s best, for the beauty of the choreography and movement. or maybe a horror film, with the same low-budget, stitched-together vibe as the very first saw or the original blair witch project.

as for inspirations for her own style and career -- she got into agnès varda’s films when her parents told her she was named after her, and varda naturally became one such inspiration, along with experimental filmmaker chris marker from the same french new wave movement. she hasn’t done much fiction, but if she were to name one inspiration that informed the way she films the subjects of her documentaries? it would probably be 12 angry men.

I can’t condition because I sprained my ankle again so here you guys go. Also I’m so sorry for the oddly specific name but if you want the other setters lmk 😭 I’ll do them later I’m too tired. ⚠️SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2 ⚠️

Oikawa Tooru

You were over at his house to study and maybe pass around a volleyball for a couple hours.

It was a pretty peaceful setting, you were splayed out on the floor looking at the ceiling

And he was on his computer doing god-knows-what.

It definitely wasn’t homework-

The silence is destroyed by your phone buzzing.

Your ride was here.

So you pick up your stuff, and you’re just about to walk out the door when it slips out.

“I love you, bye!”

This smooth fuck will pretend to be totally chill on the outside.

But on the inside he’s probably exploding.

He has seen this in movies, read it in books, seen it told to other people.

A couple of people have even said it to him.

(Even though he had no idea why because he had only known them on a last name basis for thirty seconds.)

So he knew alllll about it and exactly how to respond.

But...He didn’t execute as well as he wanted to.

So he ends up giving you some weird ass eyes as his whole face flushes.

‘Yahaba does not get annoyed at much’

Lies. He gets annoyed at so much that he thinks he might have some repressed anger issues.

The butt naked screaming in the bath after losing to Karasuno helped him come to that conclusion.

But not much actually sets him off.

In other words, he’s not slamming anyone against the wall unless it’s really fucking important.

Or, nowadays, when someone does something to cross you.

Now, you did not know that Yahaba was capable of throwing hands until today.

Because most of his wounds were dealt out verbally.

However, you figured the guy that stole your gym clothes deserved it.

You were just planning to leave it alone, but there he was.

Off campus.

Tackling this random dude.

The fight lasts about thirty seconds before you can run into certain death and break it the fuck up before someone goes to jail.

The dude has a bloody nose already and he listens to you and steps back.

“Apologize.”

He mumbles out a sorry before stalking away.

Yahaba is looking way too pleased with himself.

“That’s assault.”

“That’s chivalry.”

“Shigeru, I love you, but don’t fucking do that again.”

He mumbled a response back. “Yeah yeah I won’t. I love you too.”

It will probably take him at least an hour for that to hit-

Kageyama Tobio

He doesn’t have a very affectionate family, so that phrase has probably only been used sparingly around him.

But he has been silently willing you to say it to him for a while.

He’s already on top of the world when he beats Aoba Johsai.

You are so proud of him for finally taking down his rival.

When that final point is scored, you’re going crazy in the stands with Yachi, Saeko, and Shimada.

It was the most excited you had seen him in a long time.

He achieved his goal! He was now the best setter in the prefecture.

Not that he wasn’t before, obviously 🙄

But you’re sitting on the bus with him after they win, and it’s quiet.

Kageyama’s happy, you’re happy, and there’s almost no one on the bus.

You rest your head on your shoulder.

“I’m so proud of you. I love you so much, Tobio.”

On the outside he gets that wobbly look on his face, but on the inside he’s like

TWO IN ONE DAY?!

And at first you’re like.

He explains that a new first year setter had arrived with much better technique.

And that the coach had sat him down and explained that to him.

And that he knew that Kageyama was better and that he would be supporting the team from the bench.

You can tell his heart is breaking with every second he tells you this.

So you need to shut him up. Getting mad at the coach wouldn’t help.

You start telling him all the things he can do to still be a significant player.

He could stat games, keep a notebook, make hand signals, paint the notebook-

You can tell he’s feeling much better about himself by the end of your talk.

You pick your next words very carefully.

“You’re gonna have a great season, trust me. I love you, okay?”

Alllll the color just drains from both of your faces.

He’s like “yeah-wait. You love me?”

You rethinking your life decisions: “Yeah?”

Was very well planned out and very thought through.

And you had it written down in a card because you were pussying out you were a little nervous.

Plus, you could always brush it off and pretend like writing it down wasn’t as big of a deal as saying it.

On the other end, Semi was also planning to tell you.

Like, he was sure you already knew.

And he was sure he was making it into a bigger deal than it should have been.

But whatever, Semi’s never been one to do things halfway anyhow.

He just wasn’t obvious about it.

So, Shiratorizawa was just g l i t t e r i n g that morning.

Which was why you both were currently at a cafe, very far away from it.

This had also been planned, because his coach would not like it very much if he knew he didn’t have the Flu.

So you guys are laughing, talking, awkwardly holding hands over the table.

It’s so obvious that both of you are nervous.

And Semi’s like “wHats wRoNg bAbY?”

As if he’s not in the exact same situation.

So you just hand him the card and the gift you got him for Valentine’s Day and he opens it up.

And you’re basically ready to melt into the floor when he puts the card down.

“You love me huh?”

No answer.

He got so quiet at the end, but the words were finally said, and you were both satisfied.

Haikyuu Musician AU: Composers and Conductors

Hinata and Kageyama

* Hinata is a musical disaster. He’s always messing around with different styles and techniques. And “mess” is the correct word. He’s always “messing.”

* Until recently, he was a music ed major, content with teaching little brats recorder, but he went to a lecture featuring a composer named Udai Tenma and got inspired to WRITE.

* He has almost no technique, he slept through any and all 8 a.m. music theory classes he had, but somehow he’s churned out the most mind-bogglingly innovative compositions.

* He constantly fights with Kageyama on artistic vision, but they adore each other and are basically attached at the hip.

* From the beginning, Kageyama had a reputation for being a musical genius but an absolute ass to everyone around him. His first orchestra completely quit on him because of his controlling attitude. He kind of faded from the limelight for awhile, and then popped back in with Hinata by his side.

* An overly serious perfectionist.

* He’ll roast Hinata’s music constantly, but god so help however else tries to badmouth his precious sunshine.

* He famously almost threw a public tantrum over a critic of a popular music magazine insulting Hinata. The only reason he didn’t commit murder was because of Suga.

Daichi and Suga

* Daichi and Suga work for the same organization as Kageyama and Hinata.

* They’re the power couple of the music world. It’s adorable. They’re always at each other’s events.

* Daichi’s music was steady, kind of plain, he didn’t like going out of the box a lot. People accused him of being too normal. Then he started coming out with weird shit. Nobody complains anymore.

* Does a little bit of everything. He’s currently working with Director Ennoshita on a musical movie.

* Suga is a steady, average conductor with a playful attitude and an reputation for simultaneously being a mom and a demon.

* Gets really pissy and stressed for all his concerts a week in advance, but has relaxed a bit, since Kageyama is around to bear a lot of the burden.

* He’s taken Kageyama under his wing quite a bit.

* King of passive aggressively blacking mailing his (and Daichi’s) enemies. It doesn’t always succeed, but he has managed to soften to blows to his and Daichi’s work.

Iwaizumi and Oikawa

* Iwa-chan strictly writes film scores. He’s mostly done action and thriller movies. (He’s collaborated a lot with a certain Director Ennoshita.)

* His life long dream has been to compose the score for a Godzilla movie.

* He and Oikawa were college roommates. Iwaizumi was a comp major and Oikawa did music education. They have continued to live together.

* They teach kids together during their free time.

* Oikawa has dabbled in composing as well, but he sucks ass. Usually he gets inspired by Iwa-chan and just runs with it...Into the ground.

* On the other hand, he is the best conductor out of the bunch. He takes the shit-talking in stride, maybe even encourages it a little bit. Even though they bully him, his orchestra genuinely respects him. He has a commanding presence and a will that must be followed.

* Ushijima wanted Oikawa to be his prep conductor, but Oikawa gave him the middle finger and ran back to Iwa-Chan.

* He’s currently mentoring an up-and-coming conductor named Yahaba, and everyone is afraid. It’s like looking at two Oikawas, the salt level is so high.

Kuroo and Kenma

* Kuroo is surprisingly controlled and elegant in his writing. You won’t get any weird, modern bullshit from him.

* He gives off an intimidating aura of “fuck with my music and you’re dead.” Kenma fucks with his music all of the time and he doesn’t mind.

* As soon as he gets out of a professional situation, he reverts back into a fun-loving, manipulative little shit.

* Tries to set up his fellow musicians. There’s a reason one of their percussionists somehow started dating the concert master.

* BFFs with Bokuto. They are constantly collaborating.

* Kenma’s orchestra adores him. He’s not great and socializing and would honestly rather be in bed than dealing with their raucous asses, but he has come to appreciate them too.

* Originally didn’t want to conduct at all. He’s a composer at heart.

* He writes video game music in his spare time and is working on his goal to program and write the music for a game idea he has.

* He’s friends with Hinata, but feels as if he could never work with him.

Ushijima and Shirabu

* Ushijima is considered one of the best composers of his generation.

* Writes the most bombastic pastoral shit ever. He has several large-scale works dedicated to farming. If anyone thinks this is amusing, they don’t dare tell him.

* I swear, the guy’s probably written an entire opera about a farming catastrophe that somehow got raving, five star reviews.

* (Side note: my choir is singing “Make our garden grow” by Bernstein, and I keep thinking about Ushijima ^^’)

* Shirabu is Ushijima’s prep conductor, since Ushijima likes doing the performances himself.

* He’s actually Ushijima’s third choice of a prep conductor after Oikawa and Semi, but Oikawa hates Waka’s guts and Semi had some...artistic differences with Wakatoshi. Shirabu showed up, intent of conducting for Ushijima with the skills to back it up, so they went with him instead. (Also, Semi wasn’t a big fan of the farming operas.)

* A salt cake. He roasts everyone, especially Goshiki, their new trumpet player.

* Feels kind of bad about how set (haha) Ushiwaka is on getting Oikawa in as his conductor, but never actually says anything.

* (Ushijima is absolutely 100% happy with working with Shirabu, but is really bad at expressing it and toning down his enthusiasm for Oikawa’s work. So...MISUNDERSTANDINGS? FANFIC FODDER >:D)

Bokuto and Akaashi

* Bokuto’s music is just as moody as his personality

* He’ll be working on a tonal orchestra piece with romantic strings and sappy bullshit one day, and then the next day he’ll have pulled the weirdest serialist shit from his ass.

* You can definitely tell he’s Hinata’s mentor.

* Fortunately, Akaashi’s used to it and excels at adapting. His even-tempered style contrasts with the shit Bokuto gives him, but it somehow works.

* Like Kuroo, Bokuto tries to set up his colleagues, but he’s not as skilled at it as Kuroo is and ends up making a fool of himself.

* Akaashi is Bokuto’s biggest fanboy. He cries more during his premieres than Bokuto does.

* The orchestra he conducts has a respectable reputation, but didn’t get much attention. Then Bokuto showed up and was like “hey, how do you feel about twelve-tone serialism?”

* Akaashi was skeptical, but quickly fell in love with Bokuto’s vision.

* Akaashi originally played violin, but sustained an injury before college and went for music Ed instead.

reactions to Haikyuu season 4 “To the Top” ep1-5

6:18 PM 3/9/2020 HAIKYU‼ TO THE TOP Episode 1 – Introductions I was reluctant to watch this right now, because this series was a big deal to me, and I just wanted to watch something light, that I didn't have to pay attention to, while i eat...  But my watchlists are outdated and I had been meaning to watch this FOR A WHILE NOW.  Whenever I watch something intense or important to me, I feel like I have to set aside all this time and focus, and carefully document every reaction I have, so I can look back at my fandom in later years for this precious milestone of nostalgia,...  Bu treally, it's just making me postpone a series that I love.  I can't keep doing that.   Acchan.  New side character, huh?   I'm so glad to hear Burnout Syndromes again.  In Haikyuu.  They were great in Dr. Stone.   I'll admit, I wasn't looking forward to season 4 when I found out the director changed and they changed the character designs to more closely emulate the manga-ka.  Because...I actually preferred the anime character designs from season 1-3..!  I have a habit of this.  Atsuko Nakajima's anime character designs for Get Backers were better than the manga-ka.  I preferred Sengoku Basara's anime character designer, over the original videogames' designs...  It's just a thing with me.  Please don't kill me.   I'm so glad Yachi Hitoka's poster turned out so cool!  *o* I like how this series can relax intos ridiculousness like making a big deal out of measuring their heights.  lol "I order you to shrink, Tsukishima!"  Tanaka...!  LOL   I missed your sudden outbursts after your sudden coolenss, Noya-san! I love how this once scene at the end of season 3 is being stretched out to have so much weight.  ^-^   So many handstands, Noya-san.  lol Yup, Tsukishima.  Everyone reviewing season 3 kept saying Tsukishima really shined.  Also, Ukai said at the end of the match that Tsukishima was the MVP.   Evil Kageyama grin! LOL  I was going to enjoy the humor in it, but then that somber music kicked in.  o_o So they're still having practice matches against other schools in that montage? Oh no...Kageyama can't read all the kanji??  lol Waiat a sec.  Shiratorizawa, Aoba Josai, Date-tech...?  Oh, it's the first year special camp. Cute!  They finally brought the little chibi crows into the anime!  ^o^  Good idea to use them for the commerical break bumpers.   LOL  Tsukishima is suddenly filling in Kageyama's "yelling 'BAKA!' at Hinata" role1  LOL Well, I do want to see all these different schools students interact with Hinata in training camp settings.   I like that NOya is praising Hinata's crazy infiltration.  ^^; OMG  Takeda-sensei angry...!  O~O! Bowed right into the desk!  LOL Well, I guess if the host school's coach says it's ok, then Hinata is ok to hang around?? "Wakatoshi-kun"?  Why "-kun"?  Are they rivals?  Friends?   Well, that got me fired up. Nothing without Kageyama?  Don't make me laugh.  This is what I was excited about the different school mixing interactions for. I want to see Hinata meet this challenge.  Actually, this reminds me of Shokugeki No Soma when Tadokoro Megumi was just relegated to washing dishes during the stagiaire, but even from that position, she could make valuable observations and give invaluable input.  I suspect that even if Hinata is technically just the "ball boy", he'll learn an amazing amount.  And frankly, if he jumps to retrieve the balls, especially with his running speed, that'll probably hype up the players to want to challenge him.   But I've actually wanted to see Hinata work with Oikawa, and see how Oikawa would use Hinata's athleticism.   Sounds like an important thesis statement.  "Skills and talents arne't meant ot be had.  They're meant to be shown."   I love how proud Hinata is, even of being ball boy, like he's unfettered by doubts. 7:03 PM 3/9/2020 End of ep.  I can relax.  Maybe I should re-watch without taking reaction notes? ===================================================================== 7:05 PM 3/9/2020 HAIKYU‼ TO THE TOP Episode 2 – Lost I really dislike all this talk of just praising how tall all the players are.  All the one's the dialogue has picked out so far, are the ones with the least skill.  There are already impressive players, who just aren't as tall. Are these coaches in the back from the other schools. I like that one of them is saying it's be a waste to ignore Hinata because he's short and not turn him into a wing spiker. I love how Hinata is just staring and absorbing everything.   Oh, yeah.  Hinata's serves are the thing he needs to work on the most.   I like how Hinata hitting the ball against the wall by himself calls back to when he had to practice by himself all during jr. high.   I'm pretty sure Hinata is apologizing because he's going to ask Tsukishima to practice with him.  That's the type of audacious, crazy thing I'd expect from Hinata.  lol Chubby bird!  ^o^ Glad it seems like Ukai understand there's something Hinata can learn even from being a ball boy. Is thatt the vice principal?  He's afraid of angry-Takeda-sensei too???  LOL!!! I love how instead of getting angry, Hinata is just impressed by everyone.  Even when Goshiki clearly tried to insult him by stealing the ball before Hinta.   This is strange.  Why is Hinata shaken by Ushijima asking why he's even there?  I thought Hinata already figured out he could get good practice, even as just the ball boy, and even just by observing?   Well, he "fell"?  And then Goshiki walks by...~.~;;;;;   That's the Hinata focused face! 7:41 PM 3/9/2020 Aw, man!  I want to keep watching!  Noooooooooo~!  I have stuff to doooooooooo!  ;o;!! What else is Production I.G. animating this season?  Because this ending theme is almost ALL stills, like they had no budget for it.  Whereas, most of the ending themes for the other seasons were animated.  Maybe they realized how much better the episodes are when they pour the money from the ending theme budget, into the episodes instead? Forgot to note i lvoe the joke about NOya crashing into Tanaka. lol ======================================================== 7:43 PM 3/9/2020 HAIKYU‼ TO THE TOP Episode 3 – Perspective Go get that Growth, Hinata!  Evne if you have to scrape on your hands and knees!  ...Oh, now I get the first image in the new opening theme.   Hey, if I have to rewind to read a subtitle that got interrupted by the commercial break, and it crashes again, I'm going to start to get annoyed that the commercial breaks keep coming in the middle of dialogue.   HINATA!  ---Oh!  He caught it!  ^O^   OMG LOL  Does Goshiki really not know how to deal with Hinata's compliments?!  LOL!!!!  Oh, I see...He's starved for compliments at Shiratorizawa...  LOL   Commercial.  So of course I browse Tumblr.  I forgot how little I'm on social media, while I'm engrossed in an anime.  I need to watch more of my watchlist.   I lvoe that this show has gone on long enough for little callbacks to mean a lot.  6-6 Almost didn't recognize Tanaka's body language.  He's almost never jsut standing straight.   Oh, right!  Tokonami is where Daichi's old friend plays now. FINALLY.  A solidly rendered close-up.  Hinata's face.  I know they changed character designs this season and it does seem to be more flexible to accomodate more motion and expressiveness in the animation...But it's just not as cool as these soldily rendered shots, that used to be almost all the fames in seasons 1-3.   OMG  Is Kageyama keeping up with the All-Japan group??  I thought I saw a spoiler from this part a long time ago, and he was having trouble keeping up?  I'd like it if he was keeping up though. Commercial.  I should probably watch In/Specter.  I used to always say I like yokai series.  ...Do I really?  Maybe it was just that some manga I used to read had all these tropes I liked attached to yokai.  Anime goes in so many different directions, you can't expect the same. tendou would get a prank gift (a squirting flower cuz wakatoshi loves plants) but then after the water, he’d give him something more meaningful like a heart pin or something sweet

Yamagata would buy a cake but the candles can’t be blown out!! Poor ushijima would just blow on those candles forever and he’s so confused???

Semi and Kawanishi buy him something gardening related. Semi buys him a mini potted lemon tree and Kawanishi gets him a book on farming

Goshiki gets ushijima some cool socks with volleyballs on them! Ushijima doesn’t really like them but he thinks it’s nice of goshiki to think of him!!
