Pangolins are wonderfully bizarre -- they're the only mammals with scales (made of keratin, like our hair), and they have sticky tongues that can be as long as their body (for helping them fish termites out of their nests). The Cape pangolin is extra-cool because it walks on its hind legs like a tiny T-Rex. Unfortunately, thanks to the illegal wildlife trade, all 8 pangolin species are highly endangered. In Asia, people eat their meat and use their scales as "medicine" (though you might as well just bite your own fingernails, it's the same substance). We're now recognizing the consequences of eating wildlife; it's thought that CoV-19 might have come from pangolins in the illegal trade. It's better for us, and for them, if we just let them be wild. . . . Recently I've been involved in an initiative called the New Big 5 (@newbig5project), which aims to name a Big 5 of wildlife photography, to be shot with cameras instead of guns. The first reintroduction of African wild dogs to Mozambique has just been completed! The pack’s new home is in @gorongosapark where they are hoping to establish the Wild 🐶 population there. Follow their progress as they get adjusted to their new home. I was in the Tetons last week (after too many years away!) for the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival and the Cat Conservation Summit - www.jhfestival.org – there were so many inspiring people trying to change the world and save the planet, and the films were astounding, gripping, moving. and \ Critical issues such as wildlife poaching, climate change, species extinction, etc., were addressed and numerous ideas and solutions were presented. Kris Tompkins was honored with a hugely deserved Legacy Award for her work (along with the entire Tompkins Conservation Team) on park creation and wildlife restoration in Chile and Argentina, along with Greg Carr for his work to save Gorongosa Park in Mozambique.
