One of the best anecdotes I’ve read so far about Mickiewicz is about the time he bought a pet squirrel for his eldest daughter, Maria. (She had been begging him to get her one for a while.) One morning he’s walking along the street and sees someone with a squirrel for sale. Nice! He buys it and slips it into the breast of his frock coat to keep the poor thing from freezing in the cold weather. Then he suddenly remembers that he has to go give a lecture on Slavic literature at the Collège de France. Upon remembering about the lecture, he promptly forgets about the squirrel (which is asleep in his coat). Partway through the lecture, the squirrel wakes up. Mickiewicz has to keep lecturing, while (discreetly) dealing with the fact that there is a squirrel trying to escape out his sleeve.

The way his daughter tells the story, it sounds like he did manage to keep the squirrel contained. But what a distraction!
