In this cave i have to dive down to a narrow cave without any breathing equipment, without mask and with mermaid tail. It was around 10 meter down, then i have to swim forward. I was BLIND! IT IS DARK! I couldn't see anything until @adlephoto opened the light. I could see but it is blurred! Of course. The safety diver also the cave guide and cave expert @diving_robin would pull my hand and guide me to the surface slowly... (lots of stalactites could scratch your skin) damn! it was terrifying! BUT, I never feel so confidence working in this situation before. I knew i am with profesional people I was very honoured to get the opportunity to do photo shoot with this team. I had been with many photographers but Adam is a complete package for a great underwater photographer. I enjoyed so much of how easy the work when you collaborate with people who are expert on their field. We had already known what to do without explaining a lot He knows very well where to put the light, shoot the right angle, and know how to dive in the cave well without messing the sands. (Very important!) By far, he is one of my favorite underwater photographer. And also Robin as a cave guide who are expert finding the best cave to shoot. And what a morning bracer this is!

SOMEWHERE IN THE COLORADO ROCKIES NEAR ESTES PARK: Picture, if you will, just around sunrise ... Huckleberry Hound and yours truly, just getting acclimated to waking up at well above a mile above sea level. And just getting up out of our hammocks, even, getting fitted into our wetsuits for a morning's dive into a rather esoteric mountain lake, likely filled with glacial meltwater even ... the mask/snorkel combi gets fitted, as well as the fins ... and even Wally Gator, otherwise acclimated for more humid climes, can't help but put in the proverbial last word:

"THIS alligator wouldn't go diving in waters like these, even if he were offered a million bucks, don't you know?! I'm more the sort fond of the Everglades, the Florida Keys, even the springs country, if you ask me!"

You just could not believe the view inherent from the shore of the lake we were about to dive into, discover even ... witness the distant foothills of the Rockies proper some 30 miles off to the west, not to mention the High Plains heading somewhat southerly. Heavens to John Denver!!!

One deep breath as we step out of the shallows ... and thanks to the wetsuit, the coolish waters manage to feel rather interesting as we get into the deep-breathing exercise for the descent.

And into a somewhat murky-looking lake doth we descend.

Credit the sensation of Neoprene foam rubber and Lycra for keeping the two of us warm in waters which were probably closer to 40 degrees when we came in ... and something of a sheer sort of weirdness inherent in such a lake as here. A weirdness which can easily turn fascinated--or is it fascinating?

But at least you've got something new and interesting coming from underwater in these parts. Such which the forehead-mounted GoPro cameras manage to capture in their--how shall I best parse it--barrenness? "Which," as Huckleberry Hound managed to explain over some instant oatmeal we had after the dive, "may be, in and of itself, interesting considering its nature."

"So I imagine ... so I imagine!" responded I. "And yet, imagine how Peter Potamus would respond! But then again, not even WiFi Internet is to be had in such remoteness, and cell phone reception likewise!"

"Thankfully," Huck explained, "I was able to rent us some satellite phones to keep in touch during our campout."

"Which reminds me," saith I, as I decided to get in some time with one Peter Potamus, probably somewhere up in Wisconsin with a couple of his diving buddies, to explain our experience.

"One thing I find worth mentioning to you at this time," he explained. "If you all could find your way to Spring Lake out by Stillwater, Minnesota sometime towards the end of July--"

"Which would probably be just ahead of our next Convocation over Pie Day in Braham, Minnesota in August," remarked I.

"Thanks for the reminder," Peter remarked. "Anyway, the reason we'd like you up at Spring Lake is for a rather interesting underwater ceremony involving my Magic Divers, which will have you and Huckleberry Hound duly recognised!"

"Now that will be one for the flicktoons, even!"

Peter Potamus couldn't help but chuckle over that last remark of yours truly.

Snorkeling vs Scuba Diving: What's the Difference & Which is Better?

The underwater world is a strangely unfamiliar yet captivating one, and those of us who don’t venture past the surface will miss out on its infinite treasures. After all, our planet is over 70% water, and if you only stay up top, well, enjoy your 30%!  If you, like us, are big ocean lovers, chances are you’ve heard of two watersports that millions around the world enjoy: snorkeling and scuba diving.  While both sports share numerous similarities, there are distinct differences between them, and each has its share of pros, cons, and risks.  So which are you more suited for? If you are thinking of making your first foray into the underwater world, we’re here to help. In this blog post, we’ll share some characteristics of both sports, the differences between them, and what equipment you’ll need for each one.  Snorkeling vs Scuba Diving Snorkeling is way easier to pick up than scuba diving, which requires specialized training and way more confidence in the water. One of the key differences is that snorkeling is done primarily at the surface, and scuba diving is done below it. Let’s take a look at the features and differences.  What is Snorkeling? In a nutshell, snorkeling is when you swim along the surface of the water facedown. You’ll be wearing a mask, snorkel, optional fins, and an optional wetsuit depending on the water’s temperature. You’ll wear a mask to protect your eyes and enable you to see underwater. The snorkel, which you breathe out of, will have a mouthpiece that you pop into your mouth, a clip that attaches to your mask, and a tube that sticks out of the water which is how you’ll get your air.  Some more fancy snorkels have cool things like a purge valve below for you to clear the water, and a splash guard or valve on the top to prevent too much water from getting in.  While you can use your arms to maneuver, a more efficient way would be to use fins, which can propel you greater distances with minimal effort. In addition, if you’re in cold water, you might want a wetsuit to protect yourself from cuts and scrapes as well as provide some form of insulation.  Freediving  Snorkeling is a big part of freediving, which is another sport where you use a mask, snorkel, weights, and slender, large fins to hold your breath as you descend on a single lungful. Snorkeling is usually a precursor to this, and most experienced snorkelers might choose to venture beneath the surface to see things from a different perspective. Freediving often is done recreationally or competitively, but it is also used for several tasks like spearfishing or harvesting shellfish, crustaceans, and other marine life. You’ll need special training for this, as extended breath holds can become dangerous if done wrongly.  What is Scuba Diving? SCUBA is an acronym for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. In addition to the equipment for snorkeling, you’ll also need a tank that contains compressed air, a BCD (Buoyancy Control Device) to help maintain buoyancy on and below the surface and a regulator set.  A regulator set contains a first stage that converts the tank’s high pressure into intermediate pressure. The air then goes through a hose to your regulator, where it gets converted into breathable pressure. In the set, you’ll also have a backup regulator in case your primary fails, as well as a gauge. Gauges are all different, but most of them have a depth indicator to show how deep you are and a tank pressure gauge to show how much air you have left in the tank. You’ll also need weights that can be worn with your BCD or on a separate weight belt. We’re all buoyant and will float. Very few of us are natural “sinkers”!  While this is the basic setup you’ll need, there are extra “nice-to-haves” as well, like a personal dive computer to show your dive time and calculate your profile, a GoPro to document your underwater adventures, or an underwater scooter for strong currents or weak swimmers.  Differences Between Snorkeling and Scuba Diving Both activities will allow you an incredible time in the water, swimming alongside some fascinating marine life and exploring a part of the world that some might not be fortunate enough to experience. However, snorkeling is done on the surface while scuba diving is done underwater. Snorkeling also requires way less equipment and scuba diving equipment can be cumbersome and clunky. You don’t need much training for snorkeling, but scuba diving requires specialized training and heaps more practice to become adept at it. The risk factor also differs. While diving is a relatively safe sport, it carries significantly more risks than snorkeling. After all, being submerged underwater for prolonged periods is unnatural to us and is only possible with specialized equipment.  When you’re snorkeling, you get a bird’s eye view of reefs and structures from the top, but when diving, you’ll be immersed in the world and part of the marine world, not merely a spectator from afar.  Purpose Snorkeling is done almost exclusively recreationally, but as mentioned before, there are some rare exceptions like freediving for spearfishing, or harvesting crustaceans, urchins, and other marine life.  Scuba diving is done primarily recreationally, but there is a large community of professional divers that dive for various purposes like underwater photography, scientific research, commercial diving, military operations, and underwater search and rescue.  How Old Are You? Depending on the training agency, the minimum age to scuba dive is ten, although some might permit children as young as eight, albeit with more restrictions on time, amount of supervision, and depth. Snorkelers can be of any age and do not have to be supervised by a professional.  Depth and Duration Differences Snorkelers stay on the surface although as mentioned before, freedivers can choose to go as deep as they want. Beginner scuba divers can go to a depth of 18 meters / 60 feet while advanced divers can go to 30 meters / 130 feet.  Commercial and technical divers that have loads more training and use different gas blends can go a lot deeper, but that’s not considered recreational diving so we’ll leave them out for the moment.  Is Scuba Diving Safe? In the spring of 2018, while working at a remote resort on a coral atoll off the coast of Belize, Elora Kooistra encountered an octopus she would come to call Egbert. On their first meeting, he was a quivering blob of nerve and muscle, not much larger than her hand, hiding inside a conch shell on the seafloor, his two bulbous eyes peering out at her. As a rule, Kooistra, an experienced scuba-diving instructor, never interfered with wild animals. In this case, however, her curiosity about the creature before her, and the affection she immediately felt for it, were too strong to ignore. She offered the octopus a few scraps of fish, which he quickly accepted.

In the following weeks, Kooistra routinely visited Egbert. She usually found him in the same shallow area, about three meters from the shore, nestled in one of several empty seashells scattered among the algae and seagrass. Kooistra would wear a snorkel mask and weight belt and sit on the sandy seafloor near Egbert, filming their encounters with a GoPro and periodically returning to the surface to breathe. Over time, Egbert gained confidence around Kooistra. He began grabbing her fingers and pulling her toward his conch shell. Kooistra started bringing him snacks in a glass jar. With some help, he learned to remove the lid, but he initially seemed more interested in examining the jar and exploring Kooistra’s hands than in eating his prize.

One afternoon, Kooistra couldn’t find Egbert in any of his favorite shells or usual hangouts. After searching for a while, she spotted him near a small log fuzzy with algae. She dove down and sat a few feet away. Egbert jetted over to her, wrapped himself around her hand, and pulled toward the log. As she approached, he swam to the log and began pushing against it, nudging it slightly, but not enough to roll it over. Kooistra stuck out her finger and Egbert guided it toward the log, which she pushed gently out of place. As the log rolled, Egbert slipped liquidly beneath it, grabbing a sea snail from its underside. Though Kooistra couldn’t be sure, she had the distinct feeling that she had helped an octopus hunt.

Kooistra had seen all sorts of wondrous ocean creatures in her career, including numerous octopuses, which were usually aloof and elusive. Never had an octopus been as inquisitive and charismatic as this one. She was astonished. “It was definitely one of the coolest experiences I have ever had with another animal,” Kooistra says. “I felt kind of special that this octopus actually wanted to interact with me.”

Punta Bianca - Liguria

When we headed back towards Tellaro from Spiaggia del Groppolo we thought our adventures in Liguria were over. We were, thankfully, mistaken.

The trail back was much more plesant than the trail there ( it was the same trail but going downhill makes such a difference!)

We were able to appreciate all the little details and tucked away houses on the cliffs that we didn’t notice before

When we reached our car, we once again had cell service and Alyssa received a message from her student! The lesson was cancelled! We now had all the time in the world to continue our adventure! We didn’t want to hike back up the hill to the beach but we thought we’d take this time to check out Tellaro itself.

It’s a cute little seaside village with narrow vias

and a shallow harbor that’s perfect for kids to play in

Not finding a beach nearly as good as the one we left we finally realized that we could drive to our original destination - Punta Bianca. The winding roads from Tellaro to just outside of Bocca di Magra took about 25 min - taking back roads and very little traffic. The turn off for Punta Bianca is pretty small. On your right as you turn a corner you’ll see a little brown sign and a short stop sign for the Punta Bianca road. When you park you can get a beautiful view of the mountains with large streaks of marble running through them that look almost like snow.

The trail down to Punta Bianca is short and sweet on a slight hill. Nothing too difficult.

You emerge from the trees onto an collection of large flat rocks. This is less of a beach and more of a dock. A dock made of rock. But it is beautiful.

There were a few pockets of people there, sunbathing and enjoying the warmth of the smooth stone. We dropped out stuff and got ready to jump into the cold water.

There are two options to get into the ocean - the first is to jump from the rock. It’s high but nowhere near the height of our jumping rock on Spiaggia del Groppolo. just enough to make you pause.

You can also climb down the side of the rock to where it meets the sea. This is also, incidentally, how you get out.

This sea is definitely not for beginners. The water is much deeper and there’s not a gradient. If the seas are rough it could be a really hassle. Fortunately for us, the seas were calm and we were able to swim about.

Because it was so deep we didn’t take the gopro in for too long. But we had our masks and could still enjoy the schools of almost translucent fish swimming around. You have to be careful of the rocks here as they are covered in sharp barnacles that will secret an irritant if you brush against them. Punta bianca is definitely a place better suited to sunbathing and diving ( or trying to  😂 ).

The rocks are perfect and because the trail was short and sweet we brought along our bottle of champagne! July 16th marked our 1 year anniversary in Italy and we wanted to celebrate!

Popcorn and champagne while watching the sunset over the Mediterranean...I couldn’t imagine a better way of celebrating surviving our first year in Italy.

We waited until the sun set - moving further and further along the rock to stay in the warm sunshine.

And then, when dusk began to settle and we actually began to feel cold, we packed up and headed home.

Our Ligurian adventure was over but it was wonderful, and nourishing, and beautiful.And I can’t wait to go back.
