Can Mellanoids be effected by mind altering substances like alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, and cannabis?

If so, do their respiratory systems allow them to smoke?

They'd probably be affected by very different drugs than humans are, though alcohol has the same effect, and if caffeine doesn't work, there are certainly analogues native to Mellanus that have the same effect.

(See also: the neurotoxins that make mellanoids indigestible to local insects have no effect on most aliens/humans, except that for Orions, it makes them taste kind of chocolatey.)

A Mellanoid with lungs can smoke. They'd have less of a risk of lung cancer, but if they did get cancer, it'd affect their whole body. Cancer is more curable for mellanoids than for other species, except that it has to be done using donor slime transplants from close relatives like parents, siblings, and children, so if compatible kin are not available, they are screwed.

Despite this risk, smoked drugs are absolutely a thing on Mellanus, with varieties of effects. Nowadays, drugs are either legalized or at the very least decriminalized across most of the planet, but that's a very recent phenomenon resulting from Federation membership. Terrestrial mellanoids have a somewhat conservative and austere culture, and so recreational drug use is still looked down on socially, even if it's not actually illegal anymore.

Mellanus' medical system hasn't really caught up to Federation standards (unlike a humanoid species, they can't just bring in trained xenomedical doctors from other planets to meet demands and learn from), so in addition to recreational drug use, there's also self medication using addictive recreational drugs.

Surviving Schwil shows the example of a mind-altering drug used as a painkiller or general anesthesia, slopuprofen. The Mycomol class of drugs is a weaker, non-mind-altering painkiller. (Though Guz has a paradoxical reaction to some varieties of Mycomol, which is part of why she has medical trauma and a fear of needles)

Guz is a straight edge when it comes to drugs, only having even touched alcohol during her time on the Cerritos. I'm not sure about Slamtha. At the very least she'd have tried some wacky stuff at parties at gooniversity.

Amusingly, some of the compounds found in some earth foods, such as bird eggs, have a similar effect to alcohol. The albumins found in the egg whites coincidentally react with protein receptors associated with nervous system connections, resulting in a loss of coherence (gettin' all melty) and inhibition (gettin' all silly). This was discovered at a holiday party in 2381 when Guz had some non-alcoholic eggnog.

The replicator is now programmed to avoid producing those proteins in foods Guz orders.
