Q: At what age should a man say “no” if he is asked to be a groomsman by a 20-year-old?

Miss Manners says: Age can be used as a shield against many unpleasant tasks, but Miss Manners would have thought that being asked to be a groomsman is both flattering and enjoyable. As the bridegroom making the request is likely a friend or family member, any refusal is going to have to rely on something other than age -- more “I’m so sorry, that’s when my surgery is planned” and less “I don’t like morning dress.”

Your Head Bitch says: I was going to say 150 year old, but also you could put that person in a wheelchair, so I’m not even fully sold on that number. I suspect you are feeling odd about the offer because you think weddings parties still look like they did years ago. You should not let this hold you back. People now chose to include those in their wedding party who have loved and supported them in life regardless of their age, gender, familial relationship, etc., etc. No one would look askance at a man including his grandfather or his sister in his wedding party these days. This man has asked you to be a goomsman as a show of love and respect for your relationship to one another. Don’t let tradition or vanity stop you from celebrating as well. If you really physically feel you can’t manage it healthily and safely, then of course you can try to beg off, but if age is your only concern, throw that one to the wind.

Get out there and enjoy yourself. Within reason, of course.
