On Autumn
I call these chilly, wet days with bright colors and overcast skies the Dying Days. Nature's nowhere close to dying, she's just tucking herself into bed. No, what's really dying is a chapter of life itself. Maybe I see too much syncronicity in this, but defining moments in my life usually happened somewhere between late August and late November.
Today felt like one of those days: colorful, vibrant, chilly, with the earth smelling of decay outside the office - and everything telling me to get the Fuck outta Dodge while I still can.
The Big Boss is in denial. He's repeating to anyone who'll listen that the chip shortage is on its last legs. It's not. Appointments and referrals are in the pits, our no-shows are through the roof, and our clients are down to basically begging and groveling, plastering superlatives on dogshit rebates and hoping beyond hope that calling Joe Average for his 2014 Corolla's going to land them a buyback. My call center colleagues are filling in for the satellite teams that handle tire-change season for local garages. Hours might shift to a nine-to-five to reflect this, which I don't mind.
That covers October, and only October. November is usually dialed in months in advance, ahead of the Holidays, and now we have nothing. The salesforce might see its hours slashed within a week. I'm fine, being on the Production team, but the Sword of Damocles is still up there, all dangly-like. For the second week in a row, we've got nothing planned for Friday.
Next week? Hey Google, play The Twilight Zone's theme.
All because the global chip shortage is driving prices and import costs up the wall. Things get spread out across the chain, but the consumer ends up picking up the saltiest part of the final tab. It's hard to present anything as a great deal when you're looking at a 10% upmark cost for even last-gen sedans. That means no buyback offers. That means no clients for us, and those that do hang on are told to revise their expectations.
When I took the phone, I used to be able to bring in fifteen, maybe twenty referrals and appointments a day. Now, with the same skills and toolset, I bring in three. Sometimes five or six, on my better days - and that's for the mid-range and high-end sectors.
Try calling in and around factory and manufacturing districts. Try convincing a young mother that's already struggling to make ends meet in the midst of the Delta wave that shouldering a debt in the tens of thousands is worth it when her car's barely six years old.
Fuck, no.
The call center's deserted, our huddles turned into the seven or eight remaining regulars hashing things out around the coffee machine, and it's gotten harder than ever to keep the froshes motivated. Now, more than ever, they're aware of how upper management sees them.
They're disposable, and it pisses me the fuck off. We're some of these kids' first job ever, some of my youngest colleagues are still in their mid-teens - and the fun they had over the summer's evaporated. Now we're just the breadline they need for their smartphone contract or their tentpole console and PC releases. The breezy ones turned into cavalier types, then turned brazen - then stopped giving a shit. Four of them are playing hooky almost weekly. Instead of addressing things responsibly, the floor manager's pacing around the lanes and aisles, taking anyone aside who isn't transfixed with their desktop's set of Web apps.
"I'm afraid you're not giving us your 100%" is something I've heard several times over the past week, now. She's given it to me, too. I used to think Floor Manager Boss Lady could look fierce when she needed to - a moderately non-cliché Girlboss type - and now all I'm seeing is a cornered animal. Whenever she reports back to The Actual Boss, it's with taut skin and deepening worry lines. She's terrified.
The veterans feel it, too. Apart from their pension, the paycheck made their modest lives livable. Now, though? Those with enough strength left are scrambling, and those that can't are in the process of navigating HR's darkened halls to try and find an exit that doesn't land them on the unemployment line. Half of these guys' work is starting to look like the kind of stuff you'd see pushed around work placement agencies: pages and pages of LinkedIn printouts and Indeed screengrabs.
The Actual Boss is spending more and more time at the gym. He handles things well, but you can tell that there's a punching bag, somewhere, that's taking the blame for everything from the strikes in South Africa's silica mines to the various manufacturers' head offices being stuck trying to keep the shareholders in line with offers that aren't too generous.
Others don't have release mechanisms. Some colleagues of mine stormed out of the floor manager's office, cussed out shitty scripts in full view of Production team members or just stopped giving a shit. Our metrics are getting worse, which makes people feel worse.
People openly talk about looking for other jobs. In Quebec, at least, etiquette demands that you don't publicly discuss job-hunting while on the clock. There's been several reprimands, already.
As expected, nobody gives a shit. I sure as fuck don't. I don't give in to the temptation, but I also haven't worked my own authority as a fill-in supervisor all that much. I shield the other supers, all the while nodding at the mouthier types and adding I feel ya on the after-hours Discord group.
I've got three interviews lined up. Work's already notified. Supervisors and floor boss accepted that with looks of quiet resignation, but Actual Boss came up to me, offered to give me a raise out-of-pocket (assuming I didn't tell anybody) and more or less begged me to stay.
We get along well, but I also get along with girls in Accounting. How's it going to look for me if I drink from that cup and one of these girls notices weird extras in my slips? I can't do that, not in good conscience.
One of the sales reps took me aside, a few days back. They're not fazed yet, they're partly paid by commission. They make cash even out of sales they cinch outside of our referrals and appointments.
"You know why you'd never really hack it as a salesman, Brain? You're too nice. You empathize too much."
I realized that this was coming from the rat bastard in the salesforce; the salamander who's okay with pricing overused and worn-out demos as close to Stock price as he could without breaking the law.
I smiled icily, took a swig of coffee. "Yeah, it must be nice knowing you'll just go back to the same four Nissans and that you won't ever have to confront a customer's dissatisfaction. Betcha you sleep real well, at night."
He didn't pick up on my sarcasm. "They're just opinions, bro; I'm just here to deal, y'know?"
Sure. Deal away. In the meantime, some of my colleagues have been driving the same busted sedan to the point of being ordered by the cops to get their cars towed in for servicing - all because they can't structure their budget around a broken part that costs two hundred dollars to fix.
I caught one of my older colleagues weeping, alone in the cafeteria. An older lady, sweetest person you've ever met; everyone's Favourite Grandma, no matter the lack of blood relations. She was crying, because she wasn't sure how she was going to afford Christmas presents for her grandkids.
I hugged her after sanitizing my hands, social distancing be damned. If it weren't for my Disability Savings Account, I'd be forced to stick my inhalers on my Visa.
I figured the end of my tenure there would feel like a big, huge nothing-burger. Woop, one office - and zoop; another office!
Instead, it feels like I'm watching clumsy hunters trying to work out how to put a lamed hunting dog out of its misery. Doom and gloom around the water cooler, either in the meatspace or on Slack.
Time to send more resumés - except I'd rather stop and hug more people for a few days, first.

TGIWednesday and being thankful for your blessings
TGIWednesday News
This whole month in honor of Thanksgiving is about being Thankful. We all know that having gratitude can be a great way to shift our state and our perspective ie: from anxiety to calm. So regardless of who wins or loses elections, planetary changes, ascension and yes even a plague... remain thankful and express your gratitude in words and actions. If you’re reading this, you have electricity and internet. Most of us have a roof over our heads, electricity, running water, clothes and food. So you’re actually better off than 51% of the world. When things get rough or hard to navigate, I go humble and thankful and as Great Granny Ruth always said, “Count your blessings!” Here's something to look forward to and count as a blessing... the release THIS MONTH of our newest audio MP3 and PDF called MyBeliefWorks for Experiencing a Bountiful Harvest which appropriately enough reflects thankfulness for what you have, and blasts through whatever is blocking you from making financial gains going forward! This is a very unique audio we are adding to our prosperity collection that you’ll enjoy and that will benefit you financially for years to come. If you've purchased MBW audios in the past, look for the VIP 48-hour pre-sale email in your inbox within the next week or two. Following that, the launch will go live to everyone with our usual, never-to-be-offered again introductory low pricing.

A) "My friend that does what I do always says “I can help you with disease/illness or disorders but don’t ask me to find your car keys LOL" So that’s where I am at right now for sure……….but I know you can body dowse/map out, narrow down locations, rooms/cars etc. I like statements instead of questions……… where are my car keys? Q&A with Jimmy Q) "Hi Jimmy - I'm really sorry to bother you with this but I'm going to ask - do you still do that neat trick of finding things? I can see things have taken off and how busy you are and I don't want to book a session with you if you don't think its appropriate." - A.W. Instead make a statement, "My car keys are in the bedroom." and you’ll get a yes or no. When looking for stuff you can figure it out for sure." - Jimmy

Get To Know Me Tag
Rules: Answer the 20 questions in a new post and tag 20 blogs you would like to get to know better. Nickname: My middle name is Yasmine which is what I go by, but people call me Yazzy for short sometimes..., I don't really have a nickname, I guess Im kinda boring since no one has given me a nickname😂
Gender: Female
Star Sign: Pisces 🐠 Height: 158cm / 5'2
Time right now: it's 12:47 am 😬hehehe
Last thing I googled: The King Of Queens(TV show) LOL because Ive been watching that show a lot lately and I wanted to find out what year the show aired and when did it end.
Favorite Bands: Kpop: I actually am not an actual "fan" , in the sense of the word, of any other group other than BTS but rather casually listen to other groups. I really like some of Big bangs music, and also really like song "Fly" from Epik High. The only girl group I have liked is 2ne1, but they're gone :(
Non-Kpop: A while back I was into Backstreet Boys' music. Since I was little I have always liked Destinys Child, and still do and I also still listen to them regularly.
Favorite Solo Artists: Kpop: This is a side of kpop I need to explore more. I dont know many, but I would say Taeyang! I like his songs and love his voice.
Non-Kpop: I mainly like Soul and Hip Hop music. When it comes to Hip Hop though, I only like the hip hop music that doesnt have sexually explicit lyrics and has more of a life lesson and meaning behind it, also songs with a good beat lol. I like Alicia Keys Music, lately I’ve been listening a lot to her album “Songs In a Minor”, I love that album. Also I have been liking the Weeknd music, and listen to older Rihanna songs.
Song stuck in your head: Burnin Love by Elvis LOL my grandma is watching Elvis Presley’s concert in the other room so it’s stuck in my head now
Last movie I watched: I dont like watching TV all that much, so I cant even remember what movie it was... oh wait nevermind the last movie I saw was Frozen lol and that was like a month ago.
Show I watched: She Was Pretty/ King Of Queens
When did you create your blog: Over a year ago, I want to say December 2015
What kind of stuff do you post: Nothing special, I just reblog posts I like.
When did your blog reach its peak: It hasn’t
Do you have any other blogs: No
Do you get asks regularly: No
Why you chose your URL: I made this account when Taehyung was my favorite member, so it’s the first three letters of mine and Taehyung’s name together
Following: like 40? Posts: over 300
Hogwarts House: I took a quiz for this three times on different websites. The first time I got Slytherin, then on another quiz I got Gryfindor, but the last quiz my results were this VVV
“So, you're 27% Hufflepuff, 26% Gryffindor, 24% Slytherin, and 23% Ravenclaw! You seem to be an almost perfect combination of all four houses, which is incredibly rare – you’re equal in your intelligence, bravery, loyalty, and ambition. As we know, though, the Sorting Hat takes your preference into account...so it looks like you get to choose your own house. Congratulations”
I guess I would say I feel I would belong more in Huffle Puff. But a lil bit of Slytherin maybe
Pokémon Team: Based on the description probably team instinct
Favorite colors: I love so many colors honestly, but to be real I tend to gravitate towards black most of the time.
Average hours of sleep: I dont have a speific time I go to sleep, but I take a lot of naps so I think through the whole day I get maybe 10 hrs sleep a day? I would sleep longer but my grandma wont let me lol
Lucky Numbers: I wanna say 6 or 3 or 10
Favorite Characters: Courage from courage the cowardly dog.
What are you wearing right now: My pajamas! A white spaghetti strap tank top and some pajama bottoms
How many blankets do you sleep with: I love fluffy warm blankets, but I get hot easily so I sleep with either a sheet and comforter, or a throw blanket. Unless it’s Summer and I have my air conditioner on full blast I like to cuddle in a big fluffy blanket.
Dream job: Well if it were a dream I would want to be singer, songwriter, or something with music, but let’s be honest, I aint got no talent, so a realistic dream job would be to be a language translator.
Dream trip: I love learning about different cultures so I most definitely have one too many places I want to see, but I reallyyyy want to go to Dubai or Japan for a trip one day.
I got this Tag Game from @lolbtsaus so Im going to tag just a couple of my fave blogs to follow. But dont feel obligated to do it, you dont have to if you dont want to(: @kimmy-trans @bangtan-mental @officerjungkookbts

Come November and the air is crisp, the lights have started sparkling, hot chocolates are a chocolatier, everybody is buying gifts and all is red and we are getting ready for our old man Mr Santa. Well in all this excitement we decided to visit in November and with our 5-year-old daughter who was visiting NYC for the first time. The sight of the fall season with its colourful trees was a perfect welcome we were looking forward too.
This trip was a completely new experience as this was my daughter’s first international trip and we were worried about meals, sleep, weather and of course jet lag.
Our trip started with a direct flight from Delhi to NYC on Air India, which lands early in the morning NYC time. You get a full day to reach your hotel and settle in for the crazy vacation ahead. It took us around 1.5 hrs to reach Manhattan from the airport.
As we were not travelling outside New York, so our base for the whole trip was Hotel Pennsylvania. The location is just perfect, it is 10 min from Time Square, 15 min from central park and 5th Avenue. With 24hr restaurants near the hotel, food is never a problem, especially when you are jet lagged. The most amazing Penn Station, which is across the street. Most of the Hop on Hop off tours are being sold outside the hotel gate, you can choose from a couple of operators.
First things first … you are going to walk a lot so a Stroller is a must. Either get one with you or you can buy it in NYC. We bought it from a Kmart store 5 min from our hotel. And I can’t tell you how useful and convenient it was. Next is a 7-day unlimited subway pass, which will save you loads of money and time. Ohanna used to sleep by 6 in the evening and we used to cover her with a blanket and take her everywhere we went. I came back super fit after the trip, with all the walking and pushing around the stroller. When visiting USA kids might take 2-4 days to get over Jet lag. So keep the first few days travel plans light keeping in mind the sleep patterns and the exhaustion.
The first day itself we went to Times Square in the evening. It was really sad to see that the Toy store had closed down, but none the less there was a lot to do. After clicking loads of pics we went into M&M store right around the corner. It is really huge and fun for both adults and kids. You can get all kinds of M&M toys, clothes, mugs and accessories. Don’t forget the free instant photo booth.
A Broadway with your kids is a must. You can buy last minute discounted tickets from TKT located at Times square for some the most amazing Broadway shows like Lion King, School of rock, etc. We saw Mary Poppins and it was in a very vintage looking theatre with beautiful balconies and interiors.
Bronx Zoo
• It is by far the best and the biggest zoo I’ve ever been to. You can buy discounted tickets from their site or at the gate itself. In summers it is highly recommended that you do it online to save time standing in the queue, also it is free on Wednesdays. A very sturdy stroller can be hired at the entry gate for kids; I did and would really recommend it. Day is full of surprises, fun and lot’s of learning for kids and adults alike, with exhibits like sea lion feeding, birds of paradise, flamingos, polar bear, Siberian tiger, African lions, giraffes, penguins, African safari, train in summers, 3D show, bugs carousel and a huge canteen-cafe with good food and very nice coffee.
Staten Island Ferry
It is free and perfect for watching Statue of Liberty and later catching up with old friends. By evening we were exhausted and came back early, but not before spending time at Time square. You will go crazy with the 10000 plus eating joints in the city with a huge variety of cuisines to choose from. Try new places every day.
Central Park
We were extremely lucky with a beautiful sunny day to spend in the central park. The bright sun, fall colours on trees and the fresh crisp air are all we needed to make it perfect. Grabbed a quick bite and we were at one end of the park. Your kids will love the play areas they have built; they are so safe and full of interesting swings and obstacles. Next was the ice skating rink, it was super tiring and so much fun, It’s a must. Soaked the sun and started our long walk in the park going over and under bridges, crossing ponds big and small, statues, various courts and much more. The place was brimming with people running, exercising, cycling, walking their dogs or generally chilling on the lovely green benches. It has a small zoo too if you don’t get time to visit the Bronx.
Coney Island
Being winters we had to give it a pass as luna park was closed and the aquarium was under renovation. But summers you definitely can’t miss it.
Shopping at 5th Avenue and exploring the village- Soho-
On one hand, 5th avenue has huge stores on both side and on the other hand in Village you can find small boutique and designer stores and few of the most interesting restaurants and cafes in Nyc. Check Out High Line park built on an abandoned raised metro line.
Disney on Ice Show:
We found out about the Disney on Ice show in the time out the magazine for kids and were lucky to get tickets for it. Had to take the train to Newark for the magic show with all of the Disney characters. Got late coming back that day and experienced flurries, as it was really cold that day. It was a very special experience

[MF] "Namesake" - first short story, open to critique - 2532 words.
Kiara Driscoll scrolled through the lives of others, lamenting that she was not living them. Driscoll watched from afar as the people she passed on the street rushed to something important. She was less than a cog in the machine, the smallest cogs at least served a purpose. Her position as an office manager for the Human Resources Department of a multi-national Student-Loan corporation held no responsibilities beyond restocking pens people didn’t use and rotating K-Cup flavors people didn’t drink. Her classmates were fulfilling dreams in faraway destinations.
She racked up screen time on her dilapidated fold-out in one of those city-adjacent towns filled with residents that desperately wanted to call part of the actual city. Any attempt at recreating the “candid” photos of her peers spontaneously laughing before a group photo or meeting a touring artist was hindered greatly by the lack of returned notifications on her phone.
--
The Email notification in the corner of her monitor at 8:34 am from Carl who sat 15 feet away interrupted her morning perusal of Facebook engagements and prayer requests. After filling the tray with paper readily available to anyone in need of something to print on, Kiara sat back down and received no further communication. At 9:48 a phone rang - on the fifth ring she realized it was the phone on her desk, one she had never heard make a noise before. As the receiver reached her ear she recited what she thought was the standard company greeting, “Merit Lending, Kiara Driscoll speaking” it was the full sentence she spoke for 20 minutes.
The man holding court on the other end of the line was Malcolm Johnson, a 29-year-old car salesman that wanted answers. Car buyers skipped the hoard of salesmen and requested him to make a deal. His commission was reaching its limit yet he was struggling to pay rent, frequently skipped payments on his car, and ate ramen noodles as he watched TV on the 5 channels his interior antenna picked up. He wasn’t asking Kiara why he was struggling, he knew why he was asking Kiara why she and her company insisted on continuing their predatory policies that are putting people like him in such desperate situations. It was like he was audibly retweeting memes over the phone, “Why can’t I get a $20,000 business loan but when I’m 18 I can commit to a $200,000 loan just to go to school?”
“Sir, I don’t--” Kiara started to tell Malcolm she has nothing to do with policies, how she just makes sure the custodian dusts every once in a while.“You DO I know who you are and I know what you do. You lobby the government and go on NPR to tell us all we are lazy and need to just figure it out and get a 2nd and 3rd job to pay these loans at these rates,” Johnson ranted.
“Sir...NPR? Lobby?”
“Stop playing dumb, I heard your name, Kiara Driscoll, I called and called and your assistant kept answering”
“Assistant? I don’t have an --”“I searched some more, found this direct line, finally got you. You’re going to listen to what I have to say.”NPR, an assistant, lobbyist? None of this described the Kiara Driscoll she was. She tuned Mr. Johnson out and jumped online.
She googled herself (which isn’t rare, she sometimes google’s herself to confirm her lack of digital imprint) and added NPR to the end of the query. It brought up a story from All Things Considered, there she was defending the entire Student Loan industry, spinning the Democratic candidates’ plans of debt forgiveness as fairytales and myths.
She hadn’t said anything in some time so she mixed in an “uh-huh” so Mr. Johnson knew she was still there.Kiara searched her name in the Merit Lending internal staff directory available to HR employees. 2 results populated. There she was, office manager and her office number and extension, and another Kiara Driscoll, with VP next to her name, and an unlisted phone # and email. She clicked through to the personnel file, her namesake held the highest level of clearance in the company. She could make a difference, for better or worse.
Instagram revealed more about this parallel Kiara Driscoll, or KayDee as she called herself in her bio. KayDee lived uptown, within the zip code assigned to Philadelphia, not an off-shoot neighborhood. KayDee took spontaneous photos on exotic beaches. KayDee mingled with rock stars and had private tables at celebrity chefs’ restaurants. KayDee was single like her, but always around someone, or with someone, lack of human contact was not something they shared like they did a name.
“SO WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU GONNA DO ABOUT IT?” Johnson interjected into Kiara’s investigation of KayDee.
“Sir, there’s nothing I can do...I’m not who--,” Kiara stopped, still pouring over the pages detailing how someone with the same name, from the same part of the country, only a few years older, could hold so much more power at the same company and feel so much more fulfilled than she.
“Fine, I can help,” Driscoll relents. “Give me your account information and I will get back to you.”
Johnson was over the moon, he said anything to help make the payments easier is all he asked for. He thanked Kiara more in 20 seconds than she had heard during her 4 years on the job. She smiled to herself and pretended it was no big deal and told him to watch his account in the coming days.Hanging up she felt invigorated. She went about her day with a new stride, new energy. It wasn’t reciprocated, but that didn’t matter, she was going to do something that made a difference. But how?
She needed clearance to get to anyone’s accounts from the back end. She needed KayDee’s clearance. Inconsequential as an office manager is, she didn’t have full access to KayDee’s file, just the basic stuff, birthday, birthplace, and a few other minor details. No passwords, no lock codes for her office door. She would need to get on a computer with more access to that information.
When Susan, there’s always a Susan in HR, left for lunch, Kiara snuck into her office as fast as she could so the computer wouldn’t go to sleep. Once on, she went to the same personnel file she was on before, but this time there was considerably more to pour through. Much to her chagrin, the 2nd largest student-loan company in the country had higher cyber-security than her post-it note of various login credentials. There was a completed field for “account access password” that was asterisked out. “*******” was all that was available to her. 7 characters, no hints.Back on Instagram, Driscoll started sifting through the hashtags KayDee used - #ThirstyThursday, #Wanderlust, #livelaughlove (groan), nothing stood out, but she seemed happiest when she was hashtagging #RVA. Back on the staff directory, “Birthplace: Richmond, Virginia”.
She put in RVA and was still 4 characters short. Instead of truly guessing, she looked to the file on her computer one more time. She was born on May 13th, 1980. RVA1980 was the first combo she put into the Accounts Portal and it was the only one she needed. Cyber-Security at your company is only as strong as your employee’s passwords.
It was too risky to do anything more so Kiara closed out of all of the windows and went back to her desk to finish out her day. At home, she waited until 8:30 pm, once she knew KayDee was nowhere near a work computer. The Instagram story from a high-end wine bar confirmed that.Kiara signed onto the account portal and found Mr. Johnson pretty quickly. He had $100,000 to go, he probably told her that on the phone but her mind was elsewhere. She had told him, and her plan remained to just make his payments manageable, make the loan less predatory. Then she remembered his gratitude, and more importantly how it made her feel and found the option to delete the account altogether. 2 clicks later and it was done. $100K, more with interest... gone. Johnson was going to flip and call her a hero, she couldn’t wait.
--
She stared at the phone all morning. She had heard nothing by 10 a.m., however, it was payment day, so maybe Johnson was avoiding checking his account for fear of seeing the red numbers pile up.10:15, “Merit Lending, Kiara Driscoll speaking”, she made sure to sit up straight and speak a bit slower to sound more official.“The fuck did you do?”It was Johnson, he sounded angry for some reason.“Sir, I helped you.”“I mean, I know that, but can you do that? Is this allowed!?”
“Sir, I am the VP of Customer Accounts, I run the accounts department, I can make these types of decisions for the right cases,” the lie felt good rolling off of Kiara’s tongue, her posture continued to improve.“Thank you, lady, you saved me, I feel like I can breathe again! What can I do for you? What do I owe you?” you could hear Johnson pacing excitedly through his apartment complex, wanting to tell everyone but unsure if he should.“Don’t worry about it, just pay it forward,” Kiara cringed at her self-help cliche, but it struck a chord with Johnson.“Yes! Yes, I will - today is a new day! Thank you!”
Kiara put her phone down calmly, but couldn’t help but let out a small “woo!” as she felt like she was finally being recognized for something. She had to keep it to herself, but she wanted to post to her facebook, twitter, and Instagram about her nobility and willingness to help others.Within a few hours coworkers started to see Kiara’s stride pick up and elongate, she suddenly held eye contact and handshakes to an uncomfortable length. As she packed up her things (just her keys and purse) her phone rang again.“Merit Lending, Kiara Driscoll speaking”, she was a pro now.
“I hear you can help people,” the voice on the other line said as if he watched a mob movie to rehearse his line.“I do what I can.”Where is this confidence coming from? Kiara thought.
The man, Richard Podolski, 40, was still under a mountain of debt and was staring at another set of loans a few years down the line as his daughter matriculated toward her “dream school” of Yale.“Why can’t kids dream of PSU-Fayette?”
“Hey, kid’s gotta dream. Let me log on tonight and see what I can do, Richard, give me a little time,” Kiara had this down pat now.She kept signing on at 8:30 pm and free people of financial burdens by 8:32. They’d call the next day at 10:15 and a friend of theirs would call at 4:55, repeating the cycle all over again.
Kiara got high on the compliments and praise. She started following the clients on Instagram and twitter and watched as they lived their lives to the fullest without that shadow over their heads. They were going on vacations, committing to each other through marriage, and feeling comfortable enough to bring a child into this world, just living. She was still on her couch, still alone, but now she was the one responsible for their joy.
There was the grandparents calling on behalf of their soon to be Cal-Berkely Alumnae, surprising her with a clean slate.
The couple from South Bend that loved their miracle triplets after years of trying to conceive, but are now facing a life behind-the-eight-ball as the boys graduate. The bank manager that can’t dig themselves out of their financial hole.
The list grew for a few weeks. Her schedule was impeccable.8:30pm-8:32 pm relieve someone of soul-crushing debt10:15 am the next day they call and thank her profusely4:55 pm as she walks out the door, a new problem to solve.
This ritual didn’t leave her much time to live the life she had planned in her head, but people appreciated her so she was chalking that up as a victory.
Eventually, she found herself in another dead in routine. The people she was helping were living their lives, she was watching from the couch. The more she thought about what she was doing to help these people, she only saw it as a burden. She felt beholden by them and started to lose joy with each fix she performed as the callers expected more and became entitled to the service she was performing.
Eventually, Kiara had to make rules she was getting so many calls. They needed to be over $50,000 in debt, they needed to pitch TO her, there needed to be a wow factor for her to feel anything anymore. It had become another monotonous, thankless habit she performed mindlessly.“One more call,” she told herself after hanging up with someone who didn’t even seem excited to not have to worry about the loan ever again.
She waited until 4:55 pm and said “Merit Lending, Kiara Driscoll speaking”, one last time.
The last call started like the first call, she didn’t get a word in for the first 10 minutes, the woman on the other end had passion, she wasn’t just asking for a handout, she was asking for a lifeline.
This was the first call since Johnson that made her excited. What was odd was she cared about the caller, Mrs. Elliott. Kiara was happy this would be her last call, go out on the highest plane of nobility.8:30 came around and it was time to sign on. R-V-A-1-9-8-0. Denied. Must have mistyped it. R-V-A-1-9-8-0. Nope.
Instagram always had the answers. She signed on and KayDee had a new story, clicking on it was just a black screen with text. “No idea how this happened, do understand it. On to better things, I guess.”NPR offered answers yet again. In a story posted at 8:29, KayDee, or Kiara Driscoll, VP of Customer Accounts at Merit Lending has been terminated for secretly removing accounts and canceling debts of over 25 people, totaling in nearly 1 million dollars in debt removed from the books.
The story was on 27 minutes old and was shared thousands of times. The comment section was a unanimous chorus singing her praises. Memes were popping up by the second. Kiara was hitting F5 constantly, frantic to see her work credited to someone by the same name and without any of the work to earn it.
Kiara’s name is the #4 trending story in the United States, but she was never pictured, it's her namesake every time. Interviews on all the daytime shows followed, the person she impersonated now impersonating her, telling her story, taking her credit. The people SHE had helped were with KayDee on set, thanking her, inviting her on trips, having their kids hug her. Experiencing things Kiara could never imagine doing herself. No matter what she did or how hard she tried.

This game is free to download with all features which are totally free. Here are some user reviews:
Zach Myers: Great empire building game. I like its trade system and the research tree is good. They also have the other cultures challenge they are doing (Vikings) which I hope to see more of. Diamonds are a terrible deal outrageously overpriced to buy but at least the game doesn’t require you to buy them for advancement. I probably would if they weren’t so expensive. Overall good game with some decent strategy to the resource management and space management aspects.
Renita Wood: Great, it probably has better game control on other devices, extremely varying on my tablet at times it is extremely slow and others there is minimal loading time. On my cell phone when I have high-speed data it works rather well. Also, depends on the amounts of worlds played in you may spend anywhere from a few quick minutes up to an hour and a half for play time. Super great on the phone! Superb stress relief, great rewards!
Grace Symington: I LOVE this game. So much fun collecting buildings from different ages & arranging a City. I was reading some reviews & I will say they’re WRONG.!! I myself had NEVER read how to play, I’d only seen the TV ad, and I figured it out w/o any issues. I have a feeling ‘those’ people don’t READ the small print that states it takes 8 hrs to build a building. All they’re lacking is PATIENCE, not Money.! I haven’t even been playing for an entire year yet & I enjoy EVERYTHING about this game.!! FUN & ADDICTIVE w/o spending a DOLLAR.!!
ΔΗΜΗΤΡΗΣ ΠΕΤΡΟΠΟΥΛΟΣ: Great and very detailed game with no ads. The only problem is that diamonds are used for too many things, even to unlock a few technologies it seems, in large amounts while also being way too expensive and hard to get without spending money. If I were you I would reduce the price on diamonds and if that would cost you guys money you could add some optional ads.
A Google user: The fantastic game I have played for a while without paying a cent and get more diamonds than I need from GE. This game is perfectly possible to play without spending money. People saying that must be extremely impatient I don’t see why you would need diamonds to advance your city no matter what age you are in. Paying diamonds is for bad strategists and impatient people. Again great job into games.
sarah jewell: So good, no need to spend any actual money, no in-game ads, so multi-faceted, something for everyone and you can pick and choose how you progress in the game. My tip is to join a friendly guild!
Shanjeet Singh: Great game! Been playing this for the past 6+ years. I’d give full stars if Guild PvP is brought to mobile version. Nice to see that we can save the city edits as a draft, but what would be more convenient for us mobile users is the option to turn buildings into outlines layouts just like in for manager. That would make our editing way more efficient. Thanks. – play8oy Brisgard GoH
Alicia Gioia: I love the game but I hate that it costs diamonds for almost everything. It’s all so expensive and I don’t want to pay to play all the time. make expansions buyable with coins or goods. it shouldn’t cost so much to expand or make your city better.
Mark May: Enjoy the game. I have some suggestions. I think the game would be better if the player could face the buildings in different directions. I also think it would be better if the Police department actually created Police Officers. Another thing would be to have more Military Units per building. I also would like to see more decorative buildings such as a bank. It would also be better if the Electric Building actually generated Electricity. Lastly, if the game cycled through Day/Night.
Rodney Novotny: interesting game. purchasing diamonds does help, though not required to spend your cash, it helps and is slow going without diamonds or other packages. fun game though.
William Wolski: Love the game but touching stars don’t always hit the building I push and have trouble seeing the two very small white numbers . also seems some players have a way better understanding of the game and its secrets. maybe because of college education or business might be the reasons have read wiki leaks on the game and know it takes time. thanks.
P. Johannes Hoyer: It’s a great game and well maintained, but you can pay for this game literally hundreds of bucks each month and they do everything to get you to buy. Las Vegas style. So be aware and patient, but then to use some money here and it is OK and as said its fun and well-maintained
sasha davis: This game is so much fun and can be easily played for hours, but there are a lot of things that aren’t explained well when you start. Like what a PVP is or when and how you get access to even playing it. Then there’s what all the acronyms in the games even mean or what the symbols mean for each soldier in the battles. Outside of some of these things that could be solved with a tutorial when you sign up I love this game. I’ve been playing nonstop since I downloaded it.
Jessie DIab: I love this game. I think I have been looking for a game like this for 10 years. finally found it. Would be nice if there were more handouts of diamonds. And in the special events… if you are a starting player it is hard if not impossible to reach the end let alone a nice level.
Louise Flannery: I love this game. It is very challenging and addicting. some of the events a great, the carnival not so much. I hope they will rerun some of the other events in the future to let us work on some of the event buildings we missed. Lots of fun if you enjoy a challenge.
SteelChords: Great game. it’s my time killer right now. just wish that it wouldn’t force me to log back in every time I exit out to something else and come back. it’s gotten really annoying. that and trying to swipe across the screen to mass collect goods and stuff is a bit tricky without moving the camera over.

Life updates
It’s been a while since I wrote an update about my life so here goes:
Work: There was a period of time after I reported my boss to HR, that things were really stressful for me because I felt my boss was “retaliating” and targeting me. She sat me down and said she was “really annoyed” at certain things that I did. And her reaction was so disproportionate to what actually happened. For example, I once emailed her “let me know if you need help with anything, my workload decreased a lot after the site visit”, or something along the lines of that. I had been working really hard for the three previous weeks trying to get everything ready for this once every ten year site visit. So, after the site visit, obviously, my workload wasn’t as hectic and I wanted to help out more. She took it the wrong way and she wanted me to keep me in my place. She possibly sees me as a threat so she doesn’t want to teach me much. Since then, I just accepted that my boss isn’t supportive and I should focus on building relationships with people outside of her. I kinda have work friends now, one girl who I eat lunch with and go work out with. Would these friendships extend outside of our professional work? I don’t think so. As nice as they are, I’ve been accepting that its hard to make legit friends that you’ll hang out with even after you leave the job. That’s ok, because that means your actual friends are that much more special. I’ve accepted that I work at the office’s pace. If your boss is dumb and inefficient, then I work around that and stay in my place if I don’t want drama with her. I think as time goes on though, I am getting more and more work, so my days aren’t completely boring. I’ve gotten used to the commute (going to my workout program after work = better commute home). I’m working out regularly now. I don’t feel super exhausted as I once did. However, sometimes I spend my days at work just being really anxious due to how I was treated by my boss before. I just don’t trust her. Anyway, work is good. Having some “friends” and working out does wonders.
Relationship: My relationship has been fine. I don’t overanalyze it nor give it too much attention as I once did. Since the new year, I told myself to stop googling/researching relationship stuff. That includes clicking on stupid facebook clickbait links such as “10 signs your relationship blablabla”. I’m trying to be more lighthearted about it and not take it so seriously. Recently, D just quit his job. He put in his two weeks without consulting with me before. I knew it was time and his situation had to be really bad for him to do that out of the blue. Our issues these past months (and before that), was me being fed up with his negative mood, which was stemmed from his job. I reviewed my previous posts on tumblr and in a nutshell: he was unhappy at work, I was unhappy at work = we were constantly bickering about stupid stuff. This was before we took a break. After the break, the arguments have been much less frequent but something was still off. It was as if he was trying really hard to be happy but couldn’t.
It’s been one week since his last day and already I sense such a big change. He feels like a lighter person to be around. He looks more youthful. On Friday, we went to visit my old ABA client and her family. She has two older sisters who used to use my phone to text D while I was at their house. It was wonderful to hang out with them again and to see D spend time with the girls. The parents invited us to an Asian buffet and we all sat down at a round table. I sat next to Tanya, my old client with autism and intellectual disability. David sat in between the two girls. The mom was on the other side of Tanya. The dad and baby Matthew were next to the mom. The table was chaotic but it was imperfectly perfect. Tanya was trying to grab stuff and knock over drinks, the girls were being really chatty. I realized it was the first time that I had dinner family style with D. And I remember when I was working with this family, that I felt closer to them/more comfortable with them than I did with my own family.
Anyway, I definitely see the old him returning. That brings me comfort. I forgot to write that during his last month of work, I urged him to take advantage of his benefits. He went to see a therapist for the first time since college. The therapist said he has high levels of anxiety. For months now, his sleep hasn’t been good. He’s been having reoccurring dreams of him being in school/missing tests- basically dreams of anxiety. It was great to hear that his dreams this week have been fun/not worrisome. He’s more open to doing things. He has more energy overall and definitely has a better attitude. If depression was a demon, I’d say the demon inside of him is dying. It’s like he has a newfound appreciation for life.
I’m happy for him that he’s come so far in this journey. He has another job lined up which was literally offered to him a week after his last day. He didn’t have anything lined up when he quit. Sometimes, the way life plays out is funny. We had been talking about teaching abroad in Taiwan. We’re currently doing the online TEFL course and I was okay with doing it, okay with not, but I love Taiwan and traveling and would love to be able to go overseas with him. Hiring season for Taiwan wasn’t until June/August, so he’d still have some time in between. His new job is in Santa Monica, overseeing non-profits and working with grants. With his non-profit background, it’s definitely a great opportunity for him. He knows it too. The only sucky part would be the commute. I told him to suck it up and find a way to make it work. When he first got the news it was like a fork in the road for him - return to that 8-5 lifestyle, or travel the world by teaching abroad. I told him that he needs to be better at maintaining a work life balance. It’s definitely possible to work a full time job and travel (however, you’re just going to get that tourist experience). At his previous job, he had like 2.5 weeks of vacation saved up that he didn’t use. He also had every other Friday off so it was very possible to go travel. Also, side note: I went to Death Valley with him and his siblings recently and it helped me understand him better by getting to know his siblings. His brother worked at this non-profit for 5 years right after college and had the same mentality as D- stay loyal to the company, don’t take days off/work hard- and he had so many vacation days by the end of 5 years. The brother realized loyalty brought him no where and peaced out. Anyway, I told him teaching abroad was temporary. It’s harder for him to pack up and leave because he has to worry about his living situation and car back home. Where would he live when he comes back? What about car payments? etc.
Currently, we’re hoping to go to Mexico City before he starts his new job. I’ve been feeling anxiety at the thought of asking my boss. But, I have to suck it up too.

MONDAY GEAR GOBBLE! Garmin vivoactive smartwatch
Let’s talk about some running gear, shall we? Today, its the Garmin vivoactive smartwatch.
Allow me to begin in this fashion- I LOVE THIS WATCH. Truthfully my favorite thing about this watch is the size. It looks like a regular watch, but can do so much more. Maybe I am so enamored because I’m coming from the Garmin Forerunner 305, which is a lead brick in comparison, both in size and functionality.
Look at the SIZE of that thing!!
The F305 served its purpose well, and like all technology, was stellar in its peak. But the F305 is to GPS-enabled watches what digital cameras are to smartphones- It’s not impossible to find people still holding on to the romance of the old technology (Like my grandfather with his Nokia flip phone and velcro-style belt loop phone case. It doesn’t even have an address book in it), but the newer counterparts can do so much more, and do it so much better!
Here’s everything that I really enjoy about this thing:
1. Sleep tracker. It’s not perfect, but unless you attach electric nodes to my head, how could it be? I am a big fan of data in any capacity, and this does an awesome job at collecting data on your sleep patters and putting it in nice charts and graphs for you. It tracks ‘heavy’ and ‘light’ sleep and even will tell you when you wake up and walk around during the night. In the app, you set approximate sleep and wake times and it will try to guess when you’ve gone to sleep based on those approximations. But as long as you stay moving, even if you’re well past your preset sleep time, it will recognize that you’re awake.
Above, an option to start Sleep Mode. This blocks all notifications from bothering you through the night, which is awesome. I don’t care that Costa Vida sent me an email at 2:47am, and I don’t want to know about it at least until I wake up. (But please don’t misunderstand, I love Costa Vida will all my whole soul and I’m very happy they emailed me. Go read this post for proof)
Above, just one bit of Sleep Data provided by the app. This is part of something that I’ll have to cover more in-depth in a forthcoming review
2. Bluetooth phone connection. It transfers your workout data to your phone each time you open the Garmin Connect app, giving you the ability to analyze it on more than just a tiny watch face. If I wanted to track my GPS data on the F305, I had to upload the info to my computer and overlay it onto a map. Not impossible, but Garmin is all about removing hurdles, and here they’ve done a great job. This provides a detailed history of everything ever logged on your device. Again, more big data! You can also see hourly and daily weather snapshots on your phone, though it doesn’t go into much more detail. Another great feature is the music controls. You can connect Connect (see what I did there? Don’t worry I hate myself too.) with a music app like Google Play Music, Spotify, Pandora, etc and control play/pause, volume, and track selection from your watch. I’ve found this to be particularly useful when I’m on a bike: If a song comes on I don’t want to listen to but I can’t get to my phone in my pocket or bag, a few swipes on my watch and voila! problem solved. Getting app notifications is pretty awesome too! I have Gmail, text messages, NYT articles, even an app called Randomly RemindMe set up to send notifications to my watch, and it has changed my life. Sometimes there are too many notifications coming in (like a group chat from hell) and I have to temporarily disable Bluetooth, but seeing who exactly sent me a text or an email will let me know if its urgent and whether I ought to go through the trouble of getting out my phone at work or in class or with friends, etc.
3. Find my phone. A saving grace that should have been invented with the first cell phones to hit mainstream use. As long as your watch is connected to your phone and within Bluetooth range, this function will cause your phone to rapidly flash the camera light, vibrate, and make noise; even if your phone is totally silenced, this will temporarily override these settings until you locate your lost phone. Great for middle-console car traps, falling between the bed and the wall, or heaven forbid, someone hides your phone from you.
4. Sunlight readable touchscreen. Very impressive, if nothing else. Screens are often so hard to see in sunlight, but the Garmin tech geniuses have overcome this on the vivoactive. No matter where I am or what I’m doing, the screen is always as readable as a regular watch face. Never have I had any issue with reading it.
5. Customizable bands. A great feature to make your watch all your own. Nearly any color or design is available, and they come at very reasonable prices. With tiny screw heads, you need to make sure you have the proper tools to remove the watch bands, but it’s pretty simple. Be warned that durability of the wrist bands may become an issue depending on the seller, so whether you do it online or in person, only buy from a reputable vendor you trust.
***NOTE: I am not endorsing Amazon or this seller ***
6. CONNECT app. This is so expansive and incredible I’ll have to do a standalone review for the app in the very near future. Stay tuned!
7. Fast charging and awesome battery. It’s truly wonderful how quickly this battery charges. The charging station has a magnet that holds your watch in place, and is USB-compatible so it can charge nearly everywhere. Additionally, this watch has a great battery life. Without using the GPS and activities, the battery lasts around 2 weeks on a full charge, with variability depending on backlight use, etc. I can get about 6 days of workouts before it needs a charge, and though I’ve yet to run this far in one go, I can roughly estimate it has 8 or 10 hours of battery with constant GPS use (for example, using the run or bike function without stopping). Great for daily and weekly training, but may not hold up so well for those of you running 50- or 100-mile races!
8. All the old Garmin stuff you know and love. Pace notification and customizable data screens for all compatible activities, which include running, biking, swimming, golf, walking, and indoor biking, walking, running. This is so fun! During activities, you are required to have at least one data screen (duh), but can have up to three, with 2 or 3 data fields on each screen AND you can set them however you like. I have three data screens for running set up this way:
1. Distance, Timer, Pace
2.Lap distance, Average pace, Lap pace
3. Elevation, Time of day.
Again, these screens are not permanent. Not everyone is interested in the same things I am during a run, and that’s what makes it so great! You can do whatever you want!! The list of things you can add to these data screens and the combinations you can come up with is incredible! Take a look–

***You can purchase separately a HR monitor to sync with your watch. I don’t have one, and therefore anything in field #5 I know very little about. As you can see, the watch offers a plethora of options for you to see exactly what kind of data (there’s that buzzword again) you’re interested as you run/bike/swim/golf/walk. Way more options than the F-305, that’s for sure!
9. Waterproof. This made me nervous at first; I swam a few laps with it and was worried that it would short out, get waterlogged, or some other issue would arise. But to my great surprise it held up just fine! The swim function allows you to set pool lap distance, and it will do its best (which is pretty dang accurate, I might add) to vibrate when it senses you’ve reached the end of the pool and its time to turn around before you sustain some head trauma.
10. Vibrating alarm. This is a feature that I like, but again it’s not perfect. You can set up to three alarms to go off at any time, and your watch will vibrate for 1 min or until you snooze/ turn off the alarm. I do appreciate that it wakes me up without making noise, and in every situation I’ve found myself it is impossible to sleep through but it’s just so darn easy to deactivate! A quick tap with my finger and it’s back to Snooze City.
11. Connect IQ. This has some features that go with the CONNECT app, a review for this will be up soon! Customizable watch faces (not the bands I already talked about, but the touchscreen interface) is a considerable achievement. As I understand it, those with more design and programming savvy than the rest of us common folk can design any number of widgets and put them online through a place called Garmin Express, where you choose what you want your watch interface to look like. Garmin Express is available as a free download, click here to get a copy for yourself.
However, this watch isn’t flawless, and I don’t love EVERYTHING about it. Here’s what to take note of when it comes to negative things about the watch:
1. Buttons on side occasionally unresponsive. It comes with two physical buttons, one on each side. On the left, you’ll find the power button. Hold it down a few seconds, and it will ask for confirmation that you want to power off the watch. The button on the right will bring up your activity menus. These buttons work okay, but on rare occasion they won’t react right away, or I need to press harder, etc. No serious issues, but sometimes it’s a slight annoyance
2. Touch screen not uber-sensitive. Sometimes, probably due to the build up from my gross, oily hands, the watch screen doesn’t respond well to touch, and as an aside the easy-to-see smudges don’t add to the aesthetic value. This issue also arises when the watch is wet. I know I said its waterproof capabilities were great, but if there is a drop of water on-screen, this messes up functionality until it’s dried off. Not a big deal during a run, I just dry it on my shirt or shorts. This only becomes a problem when one is, say, swimming laps in a pool!
3. GPS mode sucks battery. As I mentioned before, using the watch during activity mode really sucks the battery. So I never use it to track a bike ride to/from campus or work or a friends house, and I don’t turn it on when I’m walking around. The GPS/activity tracking mode is only used for actual running or other designated workouts.
4. Disconnect/connect issues? I put a question mark after this one because I’m not sure if its a common thing or mine was just an isolated event. For the first three weeks I had the watch, there would be periods of a few hours when my watch would disconnect and connect again about every 30 seconds. Not anything life-changing or awful, but my watch vibrated with every change in connection, which I hated. Since then, I’ve had no problems, and the Garmin website was super helpful in resolving the issue
5. Inactivity timer. I had a really hard time adding this to the dislikes. I don’t love it, but think it belongs in some middle category because I certainly see the merits of it. As part of tracking your steps it will alert you if you’ve been inactive for too long (I suspect the timer to be 60 minutes, but that’s purely anecdotal). This is a great reminder to stay active and get up from your chair during the day, but it certainly has its downsides:
In my line of work, I am often up and moving, but it may be for only a few steps at a time and often not very far. If I walk too slowly to trigger the movement sensor or I’m back and forth in the same 8x8 area, it will remind me that I ought to be moving. At the very least, its a mild distraction. But it has gotten me into some awkward situations during exams. No professor wants to hear a vibrate during a test, and more than once I’ve had to explain away what happened.
After a long run, sometimes I feel justified in lying around for awhile. I mean really, if you’ve hit 10 or 15 or 20 or 25 miles today, you’re probably okay to take a little break. But your vivoactive doesn’t care, it’ll tell you to move regardless! And maybe you should. Maybe its beneficial to walk a bit after a long run so you don’t get too stiff or anything. Or maybe you’d be better off melting into the couch, and I wish the watch would let you do that if you so choose.
Overall, I would strongly recommend this watch to anyone. I think it is a great blend of function & form, though I do wish a few small things could be changed. Keep an eye out for my review on the CONNECT app and the IQ portion, which will be paired with info on the Garmin Express program as well. Do you have this watch? Do you have a different Garmin watch that you think is better/worse than the vivoactive? Is there a glaring misstep in my evaluation of the watch? Let’s talk about it, and tell all your friends!
In the meantime, let’s talk! I’m always interested in finding new people to share this passion and trade ideas & philosophies with. But more importantly, I want to hear YOUR stories. Find me on Twitter @KoltonGWilliams and we can talk about running. Or check out my videos on YouTube here. Heck, email me at [email protected] if you feel so inclined. And then, share your stuff with me! Drop me a message, comment, whatever. Let’s connect! I would love to read your blog and watch your videos and follow all your activities, running or otherwise. Teach me about your running gear and training, ask me a question, or tell me what you ate today. I want to hear it all! Run as fast or as slow as you need to have a good time, but get out there and run!
