something Iāve been thinking about is like, the internet is this magical system of technologies, never before seen in human history, and one of its capabilities is to answer virtually any question you ask of it. Which is not even remotely a novel observation obviously lol. But Iām thinking about this in the context of a point that Adorno & Horkheimer made (in The Culture Industry I think?) about the radio: that to expedience the radio, to live in a social context where there is this vast incomprehensible system of technological infrastructure that you do not understand or control, and which allows you, a mere peasant, to listen to news broadcasts, music, and advertisements, is effectively like listening to the voice of god. Like the average personās relationship to modern telecommunications is so mystifying, incomprehensible, and abstract that we experience technologies like the radio as an all-powerful, indestructible authority, and this (obviously) shapes our relationship to the information that is shared through it. People make jokes on here about how transmission towers are angels, but like tbh that is essentially how we experience them - vast, incomprehensible, highly dangerous objects whose impact on our lives are at once all-consuming and unknowable. We do not just turn on the radio and listen to the news, we tune into what the voice of god has to say today - right now heās selling toilet cleanser!
and all that to say, I always find something a bit incomplete about discussions about wilful ignorance online - that we live in an age of mass information and yet people still seem as ignorant as feudal peasants, or whatever. Nobody googles things, nobody tries to branch out and experience new kinds of art, nobody educates themselves on important topics they donāt understand. and like this frustration is very real and well taken, I feel it frequently, but what Iām grappling with is whether this is the correct framing - that maybe āwhy donāt people just google thingsā is the wrong question to ask, because I tend to find the explanations offered unsatisfactory. Like specifically Iām thinking of discussions on here that are about like, āanti-intellectualismā, kids these days are so ignorant even though they grew up with the internet, reading comprehension is piss poor, and so on. Recently Iāve seen a lot of weirdly moral-panicky posts about children not knowing how to type on computers because back in my day we were forced to learn how to touch-type by age 8 even though we couldnāt look up any tutorials on YouTube to help us, etc etc. And like I just do not buy that people are individually choosing to be ignorant, that people are āgetting dumber,ā and that this state of getting dumber is inversely related to the amount of information we have access to (which makes āgetting dumberā even more dumb). An unstated assumption that goes into a lot of these āanti-intellectualismā discussions is that āinformationā is this universal object that has a standardised enlightening effect on the people who interact with it - that the only reason to have an ignorant, sheltered, or ill-formed opinion on something is because you have individually chosen not to Look At Information that will cure you of your ignorance. And so going back to the god radio thing, having regular access to the google search bar is not just having access to an encyclopaedia or dictionary - it is like having a direct line of communication to god, this authority that can answer any question you ask of it. But itās not just one answer, itās many answers, more answers than you could ever possibly read through. Google reports the number of hits it returns for whatever you type in - you will regularly get millions of answers to your question. And these answers are embedded with advertisements, just as radio news broadcasts are. Like if god is selling you toilet cleanser while telling you the number for a suicide hotline or news about whatās happening in the world, how do you psychologically deal with that, how is your relationship to capital-I Information shaped by this relationship?
The corollary to āwe live in an age of mass informationā is āwe live in an age of mass misinformation,ā but they both show up as answers on google (again, not a novel observation). but in the face of that how do you not simply stop asking questions? & of course this decision to stop asking questions is given form and substance by social circumstance, it reinforces systemic privileges and violences, and so this decision is not one free from consequence, and in many cases it is not an innocent decision. a white person deciding not to read the news because itās too hard to figure out what is happening/too frightening/etc has the consequence of reinforcing the white supremacist outlook that is foundational to the social context of white people because theyāre not reading anything that challenges that outlook. ignorance has many social contexts and many of them are violent. etc. like the consequence of āwhy does nobody google anythingā is just a continuation of the status quo, just with this supposedly glaring and easy fix to it (simply google it). but that just leads us back to a discourse of individual choice, of people individually choosing not to āgoogle shit.ā it is a deeply individual fix to a systematic social problem. and so maybe the question is not, why doesnāt anyone google shit, but rather, why is the primary delivery system of knowledge a god that sells you toilet cleanserĀ

Hi, im a 19 yo nerd, yesterday some kids wre playing with a soccer ball in front of my house, the ball got into the garden of my house and when i threw it out, i didnt nlticed i threw it a bit far and it arrived into the house across the street, breaking a window, the neighbor, a single man, came to my house and told my parents what i did, he demands i repair the window by myself, i dont know how to do that, can you give me a little help?
First of all, you do what you do best. You sit down at your computer. Enter "repair soccer window" into Google. A lot of things come up that won't help you at all. Care tips for footballs. And advertisements for household contents and liability insurance. The soccer care thing doesn't look very helpful, but it might be interesting.
Shit, you can waste a lot of time on the Internet very quickly. After half an hour, you're back to the current and upcoming match day in the Premier League. But you still don't know anything about repairing windows. "Repairing windows". Perhaps it would help to remove soccer from the search query. It doesn't matter why the window is broken. It just needs to be repaired.
Now we're getting closer to the point. Lots of tutorials on youtube. Surely there's something there. Unfortunately, you don't even know what kind of window is broken. And what exactly is broken. Damn, just how many different types of window panes there are. You can find an article about German windows. They have a lot of damn cool features. I wonder if that would be a market to sell and install German ones here. What this tilt function is supposed to do is still not clear to you. But these shutters on the windows are hot shit. You'd like to install something like that at your parents' house.
You're guaranteed not to install something from SchĆ¼co for a few thousand dollars in your neighbor's houseā¦ You're assuming that your neighbor will have vertical sliding windows in most of the rooms, just like you do. Probably made of aluminum. A shame, really. Horizontal sliding windows made of wood with glazing bars would fit the character of the house much better.
Haven't you ever worked for your neighbor? You must still have plans and views from the street side. Or at least a photo. Yes, here. Where were you standing again? How hard did you throw the ball? What was the wind like? Just because you did an apprenticeship as a carpenter doesn't mean you're stupid. So it's probably the window of the study on the second floor. Yes, it must have been rotten, you can see that quite clearly in the photo. Just replacing the glass won't help much.
Nowadays, working on the computer is half the battle. Calculating material requirements, programming saws for cutting. And downloading some porn in between. Hehehe, unlike your father, you don't need to hang up raunchy calendars in the workshop anymore. Your father is hardly ever seen here anyway. It's no longer his world. In his day, a carpenter needed a hammer and a saw, he used to say. Old man, those days are long gone.
Before you start, you went to your neighbor's house across the street. Real life is sometimes more reliable than virtual life. But it was the right window, you measured it again with your laser measuring device. You had miscalculated by a few millimeters. You are a craftsman with passion and dedication. You don't mess around. You deliver precision work.
"Mr. T, better than before my throw," you say with a grin. But it's the pure truth. But you know exactly why your neighbor insisted that you carry out the repair. He'll do anything to get you to fix things in his house. And when no more chairs tip over and no more doors squeak, you'll take care of Mr. T. yourself.
He asks if you can have a look at the shower after the window. While you take off your dungarees, you say that you are a carpenter and not a plumber. You will probably need help. You don't have to ask Mr. T for long.

Hello my lovelies! š¦ You might be asking yourself 'Sea, this is weird, You don't update during the week!' and you would be correct. I was supposed to push this update out by the end of my long weekend as an addition to this; however, due to a bunch of irl stuff I won't go into here, it was delayed. I want to put my community on the compendium but we have an application process. Is this okay?
Yes! Just note somewhere in your application that's a requirement. The only thing that is mandatory for the Compendium is that you must be open to new members or have a public-facing/accessible facet. There's no point advertising a community if no one can join it in some way!
I want to put my community on the compendium but I only have x number of members ā
Also totally okay! People don't start with large communities. Activity is a must but, whether your server has two or two thousand members, if you're looking for new people to join, I'd love to help you find people.
I want to put my community on the compendium but I worry its too niche?
Okay, and? If your Eorzean Fishing Alliance has four members but you roleplay every second weekend, I still want to know about it.
What resources/communities can I add if I'm not the owner of them?
Mutual consent is extremely important to me, so anything that isn't a large-scale community OR a publicly accessible resource must be endorsed by the owner/admin/moderators in order to be added to the compendium. I operate under the assumption that a resource posted to a public space (tumblr, googledocs, youtube, etc) is open to all. A large-scale community is one with a significant member count or openly advertises itself as being accessible to everyone for whatever purpose it serves. If in doubt, please get in touch with me. I'm happy to contact your community owners for you!
How active does a community need to be?
If you find a community has not been active in about two/three months, send me a message and I'll take a look at it. Communities have ebbs and flows, especially event spaces that may take hiatuses depending on member interest/life events. I'm not strict in my implementation provided a space isn't dead. If a link or anything is broken, absolutely contact me about that.

Needlepoint hyperobsessives, gather round and lend me your ears:
Where do I learn how to construct my own WEARABLE embroidery work? Like... I need a hand-holding tutorial or resource that gives me the skillset to create my own patterns and execute them.
I can cross stitch like a golden god (It is pixel art made one X at a time. My brain was built from the atoms of dead stars for this very purpose), but when it comes to how embroidery "works" I just get confused.
I see people making beautiful things. I see them doing different types of stitch... but it happens too fast. Or I see a kit with instructions and it's like "Fill in this area"... okay I get satin stitch but... that's a big area. Is it not going to be flappy gappy mush? How do I prevent the threads from gaping and fraying and falling apart? No one explains how.
I have the water soluble interfacing and I can back pieces with extra fabric as-needed for strength. I have most of the hand-eye coordination.
Google has just become a pointless wasteland of sales and advertisements and I don't even know where to look or how to get to the message boards where I know the good secrets are still whispered.

How to Research Pt. 1 - Google-Fu
Alright. I have decided to make a little tutorial in how to use different ways to access information, especially scientific information. The reason for this is, that... Well, research has found that a lot of Gen Z and especially Gen Alpha struggle with doing online research, mostly due to being so used to use the internet via Apps. And having had to do a research project at university, where my fellow students massively struggled to find anything on the requested topic.
So... Let me start with the most obvious topic: Google.
Funnily enough I gotta say, that even a lot of my fellow Millenials struggle with google. Mind you, Google has become a lot less user-friendly over the years. Ten years ago it was a lot easier to google stuff, because Google pushed less advertisement.
It should be said, that these techniques also work with most non-google search engines. So, let me go through it.
How to Google
For reasons the question I will use to demonstrate this entire thing will be: "How many biological sexes are there?" Just because I had to show research on this in online discussions too often. (Me, that is, as an intersex individuum.)
The most intuitive way would probably be to directly ask google.
Now, on the first glance the results of this search do not look that bad.
Again, I am intersex. I am definitely not a male or female based on my biology. And obviously, as such I have read quite a bit on the topic before.
Now. One of the things you need to do, when doing research, is to be able to judge a source.
Scientific American is somewhat reliable as a starting point, but it is popscience, hence you should definitely not cite it if there is any other way.
The NIH is usually a reliable source. But, if you just look into the preview text (or read the abstract on the side) you will find, that the scientist completely just mixes through sex, gender and sexuality. Which... might not make for the best source.
The next one - from the Arizona State University - also is a bit too much on the gender part, and too little on the sex part. And if you look at the preview, you will also find something else there: Google has marked "gender" as an "exact result" by using bold fonts.
And lastly we have a result that is the private blog of some economics guy. Which... might not be a good source for this.
And if you scroll just a bit further down, you will find openly trans- and interphobic sites like Women UK and Emma.
This is the point where you should realize two things:
Maybe we should change the search
You really gotta be careful with what pages get brought up, when you use your google-fu.
See, here is the thing. Why in the nine hells is the 4th (!!!) result of the search some private blog of some dude? I can tell you: Google is basing the results partly on the SEO of the pages. And it just turns out that some economics blokes are actually really good at SEO stuff. That is search engine optimization.
Other than that, Google also basing stuff on traffic and how many people clicked at what link and probably some other stuff that us normal mortals will never understand.
So, how can you change the results? Well, you use the tools that google gives you.
Using " around a group of words or a single word tells google, that you want this exact group of words in the result and no variation of it.
Using - in front of a word or a group of words marked with " before means that you want to exclude these results.
And using * somewhere means, that a word can end differently and you will still accept it.
So, what have we learned from the other results before? Well, for one: We should definitely tell google, that we want to know about biological sex, not about gender. So we should probably mark "biologial sex" as an exact group. It probably would help also to include something like "intersex" because that way we give google something to go off on. Lastly: A lot of supposedly "feminist" sites will actually push their TERFy agenda. So, to exclude them, I will tag this search also as -"women's rights". And because I am not interested in someone's blog, I will also use -blog.
Hence we get the search term:
And look at the results I am getting:
Now, this might not be perfect - but it is much more like what I was looking for, right?
So, that is a quick primer on how to google-fu.

Visibility Features + Preventing Third-Parties Sharing Our Info.
So I was in the process of making my new blog strictly for advertising my fanfics, original fiction, worldbuilding, and what have you. Now because of the recent events that came about with Tumblr being Stupidr and giving out everybody's shenanigans "to train AI models" as they claim, I wanted to go ahead and go out of my way to Enable it (something I strongly encourage literally everybody to do btw).
Hide <username> from people without an account. This blog will only be viewable to people that are logged into Tumblr and its submission form will only be available on mobile apps. Learn more.
Discourage external searching of <username>. External search engines like Google or Yahoo will be discouraged from indexing your blog and showing it in search results. It is ultimately up to them to honor your request. Learn more.
Exclude <username> from Tumblr Search. Your blog will be hidden from Tumblr search results, and the in-blog search function will be disabled for everyone, including you. Learn more.
Prevent third-party sharing for <username>. Prevent this blog's contentāeven in reblogsāfrom being shaerd with our licensed network of content and research partners, including those that train AI models. Learn more.
Three of the four things listed above are, in my opinion, strictly optional (for the most part) whereas one of them is obligatory. And that, once again, happens to be the Prevent third-party sharing for <username> option.
Now using programs such as DeepL, Grammarly, Hemmingway, ProWritingAid, and what have you are fine since they're writing assistants. What that means is that they're used for improving our grammar, punctuation, phrasing, etc. But using AI Programs to "create" fanfics or original stories or fanart or adoptables to sell?? No. That's not okay.
It's one thing to trace over things to learn how to make body parts proportionate in various angles. In fact, it's encouraged for young artists to start out by tracing and then watching/reading/viewing tutorials on how to draw things via freestyle and by merely looking at them. And when it comes to improving our writing styles it's best to read a lot of books, poetry, scripts, articles, songs, etc. because this helps us learn a wide variety of different literary devices and point of views and writing styles. Not only that but it also broadens our vocabulary. The same is equally true for constantly writing. The more we write the better our writing, style, vocabulary, and what have you improve.
This is why so many of us are anti-AI. There are so many people who pour their hearts and souls into their art (be it writing, gfx, drawing, or whatever) and these AI Bots are taking all of these away from us. They're also very privacy invasive (in which the internet is already hella problematic when it comes to being invasive and not caring about our privacy so there's that to consider).

I know we all have our own subjective scale from 1 to 10 of how much the suffering or even assumed suffering of an animal would bother us bc we can bring up stuff like how they "experience pain differently" or "their nervous system is not as complex" but I still think that for a search engine as widely used and trusted as google, there is a moral obligation for them to be less focused on taking money from companies who want to sell us "solutions" on how to rid ourselves of creatures that are inconvenient to our lifestyle. the top results for many animals should not be advertisements on products made to kill them/ detailed tutorials on how to end their lives. we learn so little from this. i think they need more focus on how these often overlooked animals contribute to their environment, how their history vastly precedes ours, and how by understanding them more we enrich ourselves as human beings. of course me saying this isnt going to change anything about google's ad practices. its just something i think about a lot..

Hello everyone! š It's Friday here, just before the Live Letter, so I thought I'd whip out a small Compendium update before it gets crazy!
There's not that much this week but, with Dawntrail, so close, I'm not worried ā I'm sure I'll be swamped with people coming back very soon. With that in mind, however, as of today (06/14), the following resources have been added to Sea's Community Compendium for XIV Creatives.

We're a Tumblr Community now! For people unfamiliar with the concept of Communities, I encourage you to check out the tumblr post by staff made about them here. However, copy/pasting what I have written in the Compendium, the Community functions as so:
SEAFLOOR (A FFXIV Community) is a Tumblr community whose duel-purpose focuses on my projects ā the Compendium, question drives and screenshot events ā whilst also reblogging member created works, resources (including events, commissions and looking for content/roleplay/free company posts), affirmations and other xiv-related content. If you are interested in supporting my projects without the social aspect of a Discord, I highly encourage you to join the Community. Everything hosted on the Discord will be cross-posted there; you will not miss out on anything. As Communities are still in beta, members need to be manually invited. Below are the following things I do not accept on the Compendium:
Personal/Single-Character LFC ads.

Communities that do not have an RP/writing element (large-scale exempt).

I want to put my community on the compendium but we have an application process. Is this okay?
Yes! Just note somewhere in your application that's a requirement. The only thing that is mandatory for the Compendium is that you must be open to new members or have a public-facing/accessible facet. There's no point advertising a community if no one can join it in some way!
I want to put my community on the compendium but I only have x number of members ā
Also totally okay! People don't start with large communities. Activity is a must but, whether your server has two or two thousand members, if you're looking for new people to join, I'd love to help you find people.
I want to put my community on the compendium but I worry its too niche?
Okay, and? If your Eorzean Fishing Alliance has four members but you roleplay every second weekend, I still want to know about it.
What resources/communities can I add if I'm not the owner of them?
Mutual consent is extremely important to me, so anything that isn't a large-scale community OR a publicly accessible resource must be endorsed by the owner/admin/moderators in order to be added to the compendium. I operate under the assumption that a resource posted to a public space (tumblr, googledocs, youtube, etc) is open to all. A large-scale community is one with a significant member count or openly advertises itself as being accessible to everyone for whatever purpose it serves. If in doubt, please get in touch with me. I'm happy to contact your community owners for you!
How active does a community need to be?
If you find a community has not been active in about two/three months, send me a message and I'll take a look at it. Communities have ebbs and flows, especially event spaces that may take hiatuses depending on member interest/life events. I'm not strict in my implementation provided a space isn't dead. If a link or anything is broken, absolutely contact me about that.

So I just start playing the free trial of ffxiv because of your posts about it several times pique my interest, any tips?
I'm always happy to lure more people in this amazing game!
Hmm.
Don't rush, endgame is not as important in ffxiv as in other mmos. If you want to level a crafter, take a two month long fishing trip instead of the main quest or just do all the side quests in an area these are all intended ways to play the game.
Don't skip cutscenes for the sake of the party, an important part of this game's etiquette is to wait. It's Final Fantasy, we are there for the story and most people want other players to experience it uninterrupted.
Don't fret over which class to level first, eventually you can have all classes on one char. I would avoid picking a healer or a tank as your first though (conjurer, maradeur or gladiator). Navigating dungeons as a class with more responsibility can be stressful, while dps can just follow others and hit things.
Do the training instance before your first dungeon. It's called "Hall of the Novice", story gets you there around lvl.15 and it gives you cool gear and tips for your role.
Update your gear as you level and do the class quests. Your weapon is the most important piece, leg and body pieces come next. You can buy gear from city vendors if you didn't get dungeon drops, a lot of side quests give gear too.
Around lvl.35-40 look up your class rotation in google. The game doesn't really teach you that.
There's almost always some event going on, they are advertised on the launcher screen and usually start at the upper level of Limsa Lominsa. These give cool glam and minions and it's more fun to travel around well-dressed. You'll need to be lvl.15 to participate.
People often say the base game is boring and you need to just endure it and push through to get to the fun parts. Personally, I don't agree with it (it's doing a lot of important worldbuilding that is necessary for the later story beats to work) but it's indeed a glorified tutorial. Something resembling a story starts around lvl.35 when you beat Titan, proper story only starts right before you get to Ishgard.
I highly recommend to do Rogue quests even if you don't intend to play the class (So You Want to Be a Rogue quest on Limsa lower level), they were written at a later stage of the game by a better writer, so you'll get a taste of how later story looks.
Do the Crystal Tower raids ("Legacy of Allag" quest in Mor Dhona) once you've done with the lvl.50 base game finale. They become mandatory at some later point anyway and it's a lovely story.
An important technicality is to decide whether you want a Steam or a non-Steam version, you character isn't transferable between them (which can be a bummer if you decide to buy the game on a different platform).
