Summary: Harry Styles and the Reader Y/N did the couple Glamour interview.

“My relationship with Harry?” You smiled into the camera while, Harry stands next to you smiling curiously. You and Harry has been extremely nervous accepting this interview, since even though you both are public figure, you guys choose to be very private with your life and relationship. But since it’s been almost 2 years since you guys are together, this would be the first time you both did a couple interview. And as Harry said it would be a good present to the fans who has been supporting you.

“Ok, perfect who wants to go first?” The director asks us. I turned to look at Harry who has his hand ready for me to hold, and squeezed my hand before turning to the camera.

“Ladies first!” he said while bowing and guiding me to the shot.

“How did I met Harry? hmmmm..?” you said “Well, we met at Selena Gomez concert, we were both seated on the VIP section, And I did the awkward hello. I mean he is Harry Styles, I know him and been a huge fan of his music, while I’m just a friend of celebrities. But yeah for me it was awkward and shy introduction.” Y/n stated while recalling how you first met Harry.

“Cut, Perfect. Harry your turn”, the director said. while Harry nods and walked to where I was. he winks at me while playfully pushing me off the shot.

“The first time I saw Y/n was at Selena’s concert. She said hi to me awkwardly, but I actually heard of her from a mutual friend, so I know she’s a fan of my fan” Harry smiled cheekily.

“That’s good. Y/N, your first impression of Harry” the producer asked.

“The goofiest man I have ever seen” i joked truthfully, and everyone on the studio laughed with me. “But honestly since I known him as a part of One direction, I though, he was your typical celebrity. But seeing him at Selena’s concert singing the lyrics while doing this goofy dance, I just thought maybe he’s not your typical rock star!” Y/N said sincerely while giving a Harry a smile.

‘Okay Harry, your first Impression of Y/N?” the producer said.

“Honestly, Gorgeous! simply beautiful”. Harry exclaimed. “I was honestly star-trucked. I mean she is gorgeous, but very simple. she got the biggest and most sincere smile I have ever seen. ‘How do you describe your relationship’?

“Okay, this time I’ll start’, Harry said “The best way to describe my relationship with Y/n is like were childhood couple and married couple at the same time” he smiles “We are so comfortable with each other and we simply complete each other” he finished making you and the other staff smile. 

“My relationship with Harry, is super fun!, I feel like I can be myself. Our relationship is very effortless that we just match. My Relationship with Harry was the most sincere and easiest relationship I ever had” Y/n answered.

‘What did you learn from the other person?’ the director asked

“Y/n has taught me to always be sincere and real, to always be thankful and give back. To simply be a good person. I mean in this industry that I am in there can be time where I feel superior and vain, but Y/n has always been there to keep me grounded and I’m very thankful for her”. Harry said sincerely.

“Harry taught me how to have fun and enjoy life, he taught me that life is short and to enjoy everything that I do. he taught me how to forgive and move on, he’s really good at that” I tried to smile while feeling my eyes getting watery.

‘Love’ Harry interrupts, while approaching me. The room grew quiet as he wrap his arm around me and pecks my lips.

‘Something you guys bond over?’ the director asked

“We like to explore, we bond over how we like to explore new places , we find new placed to eat. we both love to travel, but there are lazy days where we never leave the house” He admit while squeezing your hand.

“Definitely our love for food, we both enjoy cooking so we would experiment new dishes to try. and just spend out time at home watching movies and just being together.” y/n smiles

‘What does your relationship means to you?’

“Being in a relationship with Y/n means everything to me, She’s my person you know” he smiled lovingly at you “She is one of the most important person in my life, and right now I cant imagine life without Y/n.” he added sincerely.

Harry smiles at me sincerely, his smile that can calm me down while starting.

* You and Harry continue complimenting each other for a while until the director said its time to move on.

“Thanks you!” Harry started quietly and sincerely while staring at you lovingly, “Thank you for coming into my life, I am thankful that I have met an incredible person who has been always there for me. I know that I’m a handful sometimes but thank you for understanding and loving me. Please understand that I can be too much sometimes but know this, I am always your Harry and your Harry that will never stop admiring and loving you.” Harry sincerely said making you cry and laugh at the same time. “I love you so much” he whispered to you while giving you a peck in the lips.

“Okay your turn make me cry” he jokingly said lifting the mood.

“Dear Harry” you jokingly started making him smile. “I want to say thank you for coming into my life and making my life an adventure. I want to tell you that I am always here cheering for you and always supporting you on whatever you do. I am so proud of you. Thank you for making me a better person and for making my life fun and exciting. I honestly cannot imagine my life without you in it. Keep being you, and I will always be your Y/n.” you sincerely said looking at Harry’s teary eyes. “I love you so much too” you whispered while hugging him.

*After the emotional messaged from each other, the director instructed Harry and Y/n to say goodbye to this interview*.

My gut says that you would work well with Yoongi, it would be adorable if you ask me. I think your quiet personality would be what he seemed drawn to, and the resting bitch face you always seemed to have. It would make him curious mainly because he thought he always had one as well.

Over the course of knowing each other seeing a different side of you, specifically that you were a hopeless romantic, he would think it’s pretty adorable. We all know Yoongi loves to amerce himself in his work, always working and doing his best to just keep up with that. Both of you being an introvert would likely work well too because all you two would want to do is just be in each other's company. 

The next thing, I think having found someone that matches his height wouldn’t particularly bother him. The other members would likely tease him, as they usually do with him and Jimin, but he would just know that he honestly had found someone that he could enjoy spending his life with. 

Now after writing this, all I can think about is you and Yoongi sitting in his studio, just another day to be honest. He would be sitting at his computer, working hard on something he had yet to show you. You would be sitting on the couch in the background, trying to keep yourself occupied mainly so you wouldn’t feel the urge to want to distract him from his work. He could easily get cranky when someone does that but you could understand why. You would be caught off guard when he would softly speak to you, asking you to come over, a set of headphones in his hands, you weren’t sure what he was gonna have you do. You would do as he said, he would let you sit on his lap and place the headset over your ears. He wanted you to hear what he was working on, though you may not have been really well versed in the production of music, he wanted your feedback. So of course, you did, listening to the beat and any lyrics that had been incorporated, if any, and you couldn’t help but smile through the entire thing. Listening to what he could do always made you so happy, you knew that this brought him joy. You would tell him everything you feel and you could tell that he would take all your words and remember them. You would prepare to get off his lap but he would stop you, he would hold you close and proceed to work. I can also just imagine, you would be sitting on his lap as he worked and one of the members, likely RM, would walk in quietly to ask him something and would see the two of you. RM would likely freeze but leave you both alone, but the maknae line would likely squeal and then run away giggling. It would startle you both, but I feel like Yoongi would just kinda roll his eyes and get back to work.

Now hear me out. His goal is to always make you smile. He would see you have a RBF, once he saw that he would make it his goal to make you smile and giggle so that any time you’re around him he wouldn’t have to see it. Not that he didn’t like it, he would think you look adorable that way, especially with pursed lips. I also think he might tease you about it, mainly to see if it would make you smile, if he succeeded he would have the biggest and goofiest smile on his face mainly cause he would be so happy to be able to see you in such a happy state.

As an idol, it would be hard for him to do things with you, especially if the relationship was still a secret. I think that it would stay a secret for a while mainly because he wanted to keep you safe because he knew how fans could be. Taeyong would worry that the attention would make you uncomfortable or potentially scare you away. So you both of you would go on really late night dates, usually late-night walks or picnics in areas that not many people knew about. Or a sweet date at your apartment. It would just be so wholesome I can’t even handle it. 

I also think Taeyong would slowly break you out of your shell, he knew you were quiet but he would try his best to try to get you to speak more. Even if it was just around his friends. He would really want you to speak with his group members so that they could see just how amazing you were. It would be a slow process, probably introducing you to one or two of the more calm members who weren’t extremely chaotic. He knew that his group could be a bit over the top but he had honestly warned you about that. He also wouldn’t leave you side, keep that in mind, cause he wouldn’t dare leave you just encase you got overwhelmed, especially when you first meet them. Over time he would hope that the others would treat you with kindness and not be too overbearing. I feel like they would absolutely love you, and while you weren’t around, would likely tease Taeyong about silly things.

Yunho would absolutely love you, I feel. That man is an absolute puppy and, much like Taeyong, would honestly live to see you smile and be happy. I can’t say I have ever seen that man not smiling or being an adorable bean unless he’s performing but even then he’s adorable. He would absolutely be at your side as much as he could because he just loves being close to you. 

You’re sitting on the couch? He would have his arm either wrapped around you or have you sitting on his lap so you could cuddle into his chest. Sitting at dinner with the other members? He’s holding your hand under the table. You haven’t seen each other all day? You bet he would rush to you and just embrace you in the tightest of hugs. I don’t think he would be against pda around his friends, he would be all for it as well. He would always be trying to hold your hand or hold you close, the other members didn’t mind this. I think they would become so used to it they would just kinda dismiss it. 

Your quiet nature would also intrigue him a lot too. I see him being fairly outgoing, not as much as Wooyoung or San, but he would love trying to help get you out to try and do things. Whether it be bringing you to one of their concert, or something simple like a late-night movie where he knew you wouldn’t get caught together. He would understand that sometimes it was draining but he would want you to experience new things, especially if it was with him. 

I also feel like if your relationship became public, whether it be on purpose or by accident, he would want you to always be with him. If he could and was aloud too he would bring you to award shows. He would love seeing you all dressed up. He would want you to match with you, making those who see you jealous because you were looking so beautiful. He would also just openly hold your hand, for both comforts and just loving having you around. He would gently squeeze your hand if he sensed you were anxious. He would want you to be comfortable. I also think that the other members would want the same thing too, mainly because you would be such good friends with them. So if for some reason you were bombarded, they would all be by your side. They would see how Yunho looks at you, they would want you to stick around and wouldn’t want you to be scared off. So they would protect you, just as much as he would.

bugs. i am so genuinely terrified of bugs. in the less concrete sense, being alone forever and general failure/being forgotten.

oof. okay. so, i have a small zoo. we’ll start with the og baby, lily. calico housecat. she’s my cranky grandma and just...the love of my life. she made me a mama and will forever make me emotional ty. roxie is our tiny baby. she’s a little 4 lb yorkie that was supposed to be average sized, but decided from the jump to be a drama queen and giant pain in the ass. technically my mom’s but...i love her SO! then there’s sophie! my sweet princess sophia sausage - precious lil burnt sausage roll. she is the sweetest, homeliest girl and my soulmate, i’m pretty sure. she’s vvv overweight and more beautiful than i could ever be these are the facts. lastly, the boys and my favorite lil surprises. p kitty aka puff/puffy/bubba/lil man and suge knight aka shoogie/boog/stinky. i found them behind a redbox at a former job and tricked them into letting me bring them home when it was supposed to be, like, -50f outside. i had zero intentions of keeping them, but we bonded and now they’re the goofiest, stinkiest little bundles of joy and i couldn’t imagine them not being apart of our family.

i am aggressively anti-pants, so if we’re really going for comfort? my favorite lil pair of boy shorts and a softball t-shirt i stole from my brother.

what year of high school was your favorite? 

honestly, none of them. i was not a fan of high school. if i had to pick, though, my senior year? just because it was pretty dope as far as dance went? the summer going into that year at camp i was one of five selected for a scholarship, placed with my solo that competition season, and our team made it to state with a routine i helped choreograph. as a dancer, it was my most accomplished season and the most fun. i also got to help choreograph our musical that year which was insanely cool.

how many concerts have you been to?

not. enough. roughly ten? i think. i’m probably forgetting some, tbh. but there are so many more artists i want to see? but most of my friends don’t listen to the same music as me so like...i need concert buddies. help.

Out of the band, I ship you with John! You meet John, or rather, see him for the first time at a concert your friends drag you to. You didn’t particularly want to go out that night, but goddamn, you’re glad you did. You see him on stage and the world stops turning for a second. You’d heard of the band, people loved them and you could tell why. They got to a song called Liar and John had a solo. It was flawless, like actually flawless. It was so intricate too, you loved it.

So when you got home, you made it your mission to learn it. You bought the record and spent the next few weeks learning the song. Not that you’d ever see the bassist again, but you’d get to carry this one part of him with you. It was a truly inspiring night and it lights a fire under your ass to go out and chase your passion.

To your surprise, you do see him again. You were auditioning for a part in the same building that the band was recording their new album. You quite literally bump into them on the way in. A man, who you soon know as Roger, is walking backward and waving his arms exacerbated and something the other man, who you soon know as Freddie, said. He bumps into you and you stumble sideways, bracing yourself for your landing. You didn’t hit the ground though, someone grabbed your arm and hauled you up. You turn and swallow a gasp. It’s him.

Roger apologizes profusely and you laugh it off, saying it’s fine. It really is, because now you and John can’t keep your eyes off of each other. When the boys realize that they really like you, they invite you to come and listen to them record after you’re done with your audition. They’re sure you’ll get the part, by the way (you do). It’s an offer you can’t refuse, to see the magic done in person. You agree and it’s just as magnificent as you imagined it would be. The whole time, your focus is dedicated solely to John. He’s so talented, he plays effortlessly.

You applaud when the song is over and they invite you into the room. Freddie asks if you play anything and you say you play a bit of the bass. Without thinking about it twice, John is taking his instrument off and handing it to you. You feel your face redden, honored that you’re playing his personal bass. You look back to Freddie and he gestures for you to start. You know this is your moment, what all those weeks of practice were for. You play the Liar solo.

You finish and look up to see their astonished faces. Roger makes a comment about keeping you around and you chuckle and look down. John comes up and compliments you, brushing a stray strand of hair out of your face. Freddie makes an off-handed comment about you two getting a room and now it’s John’s turn to redden. You brush it off and grab his hand, look Freddie dead in the eye and decide to sass him back.

“Maybe we will”

The room erupts into howls of laughter as Freddie smiles. He likes you. You look over and John is grinning like a mad man. He likes you too. You can tell, this the beginning of something very special.

Out of the cast, I ship you with Gwilym! You and Gwil had been dating practically forever. You two were that super cute couple that everyone groans about but is actually secretly super jealous. He knows you unlike anybody you’ve ever dated and he just feels like home. You’re his biggest supporter and are super proud of him when he gets the role of Brian in the new Queen biopic. He’s always there for you too, super proud at how talented and passionate you are when it comes to acting.

Your date nights are your favorite. You two live together and you’re convinced that your studio flat is the coziest place on earth. You’ve got an old fashioned projector and the two of you love to cuddle up and watch movies. You two also love to go on walks downtown, your camera in hand. You snap the goofiest pictures of him and keep them to put in your album. He always knows how to make you laugh and cheer you up when you’re down. He’s the love of your life, he really is.

my concert experience: Arctic Monkeys @ Berlin, 23rd May 2018

Yesterday the first people were at the venue at 5AM and today at 8AM - I got there at 11 and was 6th. We all had a good time waiting (despite the heat) and we got in and into the first row. The gig started at 8 with Cam and he was the sweetest :’) He almost knocked the mic over when he sat down at his keyboard and gave us the goofiest smile :’))) Plus he was super happy to find his lighter by the keyboard (”I’ve been looking for that for two hours!”)

I almost started crying when they played the extended version of C'est Toi because I’m really emotional and this song just- fuck anyway. Before they played that, Cam was like “This next one is another smash hit I’m sure you’re all aware off…..” and I just wanted to give him a hug :( I thought more fans would know him tbh. Anyway. Whoever Said Gambling’s For Suckers sounds SO SO much better live. Watch Me Take It Away and Do You Know Me By Heart made me melt. He spoke a lot of German in between songs and it was absolutely adorable.

Then AM got on stage and my heart legit stopped for a second I was just asdsffafsd feeling like I was going to explode and they are SO HOT?? Anyway. They were all so tiny and beautiful?? All of them look at least 300% as attractive in rl compared to images. Like I was standing one and a half meters away from them ugh. Al was being as dramatic as ever and he locked glances with me during Do I Wanna Know? and stared at me for a couple of seconds. Part of me died then and there (another part later during Fireside). He took his jacket off a couple of songs into the set and undid a button of his shirt right after and wOW my poor heart. Uhh anyway. The crowd started going insane during Crying Lightning and Brianstorm (which came right afterwards). Jamie was rocking out to every song and Nick legit looked what I imagine a children’s book prince should look like (SO SO GOOD I WAS-). Matt chewed gum throughout the entire gig lmao. I couldn’t get good pics of him because Al was in the way haha. My friend threw her bra on stage and Al almost tripped over it asdfsfaff (he had his back turned when she threw it). Four songs into the set all of us were sweating like crazy (it was horrible, really - luckily the security handed around water bottles) and during Brianstorm which they played early in the set, the crowd just went bonkers. There was lots of pushing, elbows hitting everybody (I’m covered in bruises) and I couldn’t breathe half the time but eh. The moshing wasn’t as wild as yesterday but it was insane regardless. (edit: From how much breathing still hurts I’d say some of my ribs are slightly cracked.) Oh and I got either Jamie’s or Al’s pick.

Many people were disappointed by the setlist (8 songs off of AM) but honestly I didn’t mind it that much because seeing them live was such a gift in itself.

When I got home I was just a crying mess lmao. All the waiting and the pain was so worth it in the end. Would repeat it anytime. I love this band so fucking much.

Released “Isolation Compilation - Pt. 1” Thanks To A Successful Kickstarter Campaign

My “good news / good music” story is that my indie label (MediaGroove) released a compilation album this year - really against the odds - because there were so many unfinished tracks when we started. In December 2019, my label raised money on Kickstarter for a full album by one of our artists, but when the pandemic and lockdown hit - it was damn impossible to wrangle all the tracks into completion. So, we decided to put out a compilation EP of a handful of different artists instead, with songs that only needed editing, mixing and mastering - not full "construction and renovation." MediaGroove’s “Isolation Compilation - Pt. 1” was released October 23rd. I learned a lot in producing and releasing this EP.  For instance, how Spotify doesn’t let you promote / pitch songs from a compilation for advance playlisting!   That was an eye-opener and a bit of a rude awakening.

Did A Drive-In Show For 300 Paid Attendees, NPR & Magazine Interview

We are a country/Americana band out in Montana called Calvin and the Coal Cars. Our debut album release show was scheduled for March 21, 2020 and was looking like it was about to sell out at The Pub Station in Billings. However, six days before the show it was postponed indefinitely. Despite the obvious drawbacks, we have kept a bit of our momentum. We immediately scheduled a Facebook Live show that was streamed on a couple other platforms, and because of our quick action we got an interview on NPR (our first on terrestrial radio). We also produced a Drive In show that was a great success. We had nearly 300 paid attendees and hired a production company that was able to project our band on the big screen, with 4 camera operators. That show ended up getting our first magazine interview. We also used the time to record our follow up album, The Greatest Hits Vol II, which we plan to release March 21, 2021. So while times are tough, we’ve managed to keep creating.

This song touched me deeply because of all the non equality for some people I dedicated this song to that and Jacob Blake who was shot 7 times in his back, at that point enough is enough, and as an artist I had to say something. I said I want this song to really sink in and touch the hearts of people to wanna make change in the world. I can't lie, producing this song brought a tear to my eyes because I couldn't wait for the message to be heard. We are the ones, the hook came to me super fast I knew right then that the message would have to be heard.Being African in America is not easy you have to go 10x harder then others to be recognized but where there's a will there's a way, a passion that can't be turned off by anyone.

Played A Senior Center onThanksgiving And Changed A Woman’s Life

On Thanksgiving I was fortunate to have a rare live gig playing piano for the residents at a senior living facility. This has been an especially tough year for these folks since they are not able to have outside family members come visit, all their usual activities are extremely limited and no live music or entertainment since March. I had a fairly small, yet very attentive audience that stayed throughout my entire 2 hour performance where I shared music, stories and gratitude. When it came time to wrap up, I thought I'd conclude with a sentimental Christmas piece (from my album releasing the next day). As I finished, "I'll Be Home for Christmas," a woman approached the piano with tears in her eyes and pulled her mask down and said, "I asked to receive a sign from my husband in heaven that he was here with me right now [pause and sobbing] and THIS was it." She gave a soft smile through her tears and I immediately wept and then she walked away.

Learned Production, Experimented And Pushed Her Limits - Wants To Help Other Women Do The Same

When we met Ariel in 2017, I didn't know the first thing about production. Fast-forward to today, I can now engineer, produce, mix and master our records. Several of our self-produced songs have been signed to publishers and agents. I've even started producing other artists in addition to George's and my own solo project. Music supervisors and major label producers alike have told me that I'm a talented producer and should seriously consider it as a career path. So I spent most of 2020 learning, experimenting and pushing my limits, all while having a blast doing it. 

In "Wasted Space In My Heart", I used office supplies to create the percussion elements and processed them to create a fun indie pop song. I hope that sharing this will inspire more women to get into production and experience the thrill of realizing a musical vision from idea to master.

When Covid and the shutdowns and that reality started to kick in...I freaked and I thought, "Even though i'm 'older' , what if I miss my chance at ever achieving some form of success?" I blurted out,  "I don't want to be a wannabe anymore!" Then I thought, cool song title!

So I quickly wrote and recorded the song at home and put it out, lack of professionalism be damned! 

Then a magical moment: One of my goofiest songs, "Wannabe" got added to several artists playlists on Pandora and I went from a pitiful 5 or 6 streams a week to over 900 a week!!

Wrote A Custom Song For A Frontline Worker

I was contacted by Desjardins Group and asked to perform a song for somebody in Canada that was going through a rough time because of the pandemic. I was given a girl named Autumn, who was a frontline worker. Her sister contacted Desjardins with the most wonderful message about how hard her sister is working. That night, I wrote this song called "Autumn" and sent it in to Desjardins. Within a few days, Autumn had her very first song written for her and she was brought to tears. It was really nice to help a stranger out during this time.

Inspired By BLM Collaborated On A Track To Raise Money For Charity

This has indeed been one hell of a year - but the Black Lives Matter movement really impacted me the most. I was straight up experiencing white guilt and felt I had to do something. 

I partnered with two of my close friends who are amazing talented artists and we wrote and created a track with 100% of the proceeds going to charity. The track also raised awareness of police brutality - being named after Daz, a family member of one of my friends who passed at the hands of police. A lot of people helped out and gave their time for free to create a music video and to promote the track and we are now raising money for the charities that need it most!

— Dad Jaebum - One of those guys that worries about everything for the entire duration of the pregnancy - But when the baby is delivered safe and sound, he’s overjoyed - Let me tell you though - Jaebum is 289% an aggressive baseball dad - Throws his ballcap on the ground - Hands on his hips - Angrily spitting out sunflower seeds - But when you slip your hands into his, he relaxes and reminds himself that it’s just a game - He’ll defend his kids against everything though - Likes to pack their lunches for them - Never cuts the crust off of his kids’ PB&J sandwiches - Daily trips to the playground - Cries the first time they say they don’t want to go - Family night is a ritual - If one of his children disrespects your cooking, he blows his cap - “Your mother spent all day trying to cook this delicious food for you while you got to go play. How about you stay and cook and she’ll play with us instead? Doesn’t sound fun, huh? Go apologize to her mother and thank her for this lovely dinner.” - Can’t stand it when his kids don’t eat their vegetables - He makes them drink tea before bed - Reads them a bed time story every night - Jaebum overall would be an amazing boyfriend, husband, and father. - He’ll doubt himself along the way but he knows he has your endless love and support, so he keeps going. - pls take care of him & feed him well

toni loves thrift shopping for lovi. even tho lovi loves super nice clothes, his eyes always light up when toni presents t-shirts and sweaters for concerts or schools they've never heard of

im just imagining him finding the goofiest shirts and roma laughs at them but refuses to wear them out but tonio most definitely will. and does. and roma is so embarrassed

Some thoughts of hob at the concert

-he’s exactly as beautiful as I imagined him to be. He /is/ an angel. -his English has gotten so good and he led a call/answer thing with the sections and he was just so comfortable with himself?? -he thrusted in my direction (not choreographed) hhhhhhh -HE PUT THE DUCK HAT ON I WAS CRYING SO HARD -when they were talking at the end he turned to my section and did like this impromptu little dance and gosh he is the goofiest thing - he honestly has the cutest most perfect butt like I already knew this but in real life dksksjsjjsjeje -in BME his dance was the most incredible thing like even from a completely objective view he is so fucking talented -he wasn’t wearing lenses!!! And y'all know I love his beautiful face no matter what but his gorgeous brown eyes were so bright and it just felt so special to me?? Idk -his makeup was so natural SO HIS LIP FRECKLE!!! HIS PRECIOUS MOLE!! I COULD SEE IT HHHHHH -k this sounds fake but I /definitely/ made eye contact w him and I smiled my widest and hhhh my heart will be warm forever -he smiled during spring day?? And seeing him be bright and hopeful in a song that's so incredibly important to me just... makes me hopeful

rewrite of a previous post

Here is a new draft of my previous memoir. I feel this captures it better.

There are stories that my family always talks about when the subject of my drumming career comes up. I started out with wooden spoons in my hands banging on pots and pans. Instead of sitting on a drum throne, I was sitting on a diaper on the kitchen floor. Mom always says her favorite picture of me is a curly headed four year old version of myself. I’m in these sweet santa claus and christmas tree onesies railing into my first dinky drum set. I would pencil invitations to solo concerts I was performing and stuff them in the mailboxes of my next-door neighbors, the venue being my bedroom. The show always sold out.

It’s no far stretch to say that drumming came easy to me. I don’t really remember starting, I just always was. Through the rest of my formative years, I gained other interests. Flying helicopters seemed really cool, skateboarding was a lot of fun, but drums remained. Sixth grade began my formal education and shift to become a proper percussionist.  I started beginner band. I learned to read music. I was slow at these new concepts, but deliberate in my path towards the dream to achieve something incredible. I knew the possibility and drive was there.

I stuck with it, and in my own humble opinion, I got pretty good. I left the beginner concert band and moved on to high school drumline. I was officially one of the big kids.

Drumline was a ton of fun. A natural progression from the energy I had, but focused in a more regiment approach to playing directly in time. I was learning an entirely new way to drum. I was learning the art of bass drumming.

At first, I though this bulbous thing that hung out in front of the goofiest of kids called the bass drum was merely an afterthought for all the notes you could ram on the coveted snare. When I was placed on the bassline I felt I had been insulted, demoted to play the hokey part of the boom-chik-boom-chik rhythm. Quickly, I learned to love the bass drum for the sole reason it was so hard to understand.

A marching bass drumline is peculiar thing, because to do right, you need four other players. Aside from being the classic boom in that boom-chik rhythm, the bass drums also provided the melody. The catch is, each drum only has one pitch. So, a new skill is required.

The act of splitting.

I always use this analogy: Imagine a piano player and the fingers that glide up and down the keyboard playing a song. Replace each finger with a guy on a bass drum. What if you were to just play the ring finger? The pinky? What would that sound like in your head? In a line, each bass drummer is allocated a finger. Combine these five guys playing unique syncopated parts and they make one single instrument...

For kids that grew up wanting to play baseball, the ultimate dream was to play in the MLB. Play under the bright lights and be regarded as a high caliber player and if he was any good, be considered one of the greats. For kids that did marching band, that dream was DCI. Drum Corps International. That was me. That was my dream and I was on my way.

DCI is a funny thing to explain. It’s labeled as the major leagues of marching band, and yeah, that’s a pretty accurate description. The difference: sub the multi-million dollar contracts and ESPN primetime coverage for membership fees and a few YouTube videos to show your friends. In keeping with the baseball analogies, by the time I was 17, I found myself contracted with a minor league team, with strong potential to make it to the majors.

In a drum corps, there are brass players, colorguard members and percussionists. We spend the summer traveling, perfecting and performing a 11 and half minute show. A majority of the time is spent in and around high schools. We sleep on gym floors and rehearse on practice fields.  

Corps travel around 10,000 miles in a typical season and compete in around 30 shows. My first season I spent with Music City Drum and Bugle Corps cutting my teeth and learning how to play at this level with other kids from around the South. I learned learned a great deal about myself and my weaknesses. The following year, I moved up to perform with a more prestigious corps. The Madison Scouts, an all-male corps based out of Madison, Wisconsin .

The Scouts were older, played faster and on a near superhuman level. We had bravado that other corps didn’t have.  We were known as the Men of Madison and we played like it.

I spent three more years with the Scouts and by the time I had aged out I was a part of one of the greatest bassline’s Scouts ever had.

Now that my time with drum corps is over it’s hard to reflect. I try live like I am still in the mode of hoping on a bus traveling through the night and waking up to do one of the things I love, but It’s hard. That part of my life is no more. I had my fun, I had my glory, but what to do with that now? What is the legacy that lives on?

I take these lessons learned, these friends made and places traveled. I carry on and share what I can.  I give back and teach the younger guys the art of bass drumming. Humble myself when a difficult task is at hand and plow through. Take pride when the time is right.

I made the majors. I had my time in those lights.
