“Well, funny you should say my dick fell off, cuz, wow, what a coincidence— I so do not look like you right now. I mean, would love to come into work, boss. But I doubt you want someone who looks like a shorter, woman version of you replacing you at meetings. What would people say?”
❝ ... Okay, yeah, I’m really not following. Care to be a little less cryptic, or is that just too much to ask? ❞
Because for once he’s too baffled to know what to say. Who could blame him for not jumping to the conclusion that his double had involuntarily swapped genders overnight?

"Heeey, what's up?" *sitcom laugh track*
First three in my in inbox get kisses. || No Accepting (3/3)
Nisha ignored the odd sounds in the background, contemplating, before moving to wrap her arms around the double’s neck, pulling him down to press her lips to his. It was clear she was holding back, not sure how Tim would like her getting rough from the get-go. She moved to press herself against the double, a smirk forming as she mutter against his lips, “I think your dick is.”

@goodtobejack from here X
Ah, there was the man he was hoping to see. Rhys was very happy that he didn’t have to wait all that long in order for him to finally swing on by. And the reaction he got from him was priceless as well. A wide smile came to his face at it and a light laugh came from the company man as he looked the doppelganger over.
“Well, hello to you too” he cooed at his boyfriend happily.
“Are you just going to stand there with your mouth open or are you going to come a little closer?”

goodtobejack replied to your post “Is that my shirt?”
"Well, as long as it isn't my pizza cat sweater. Not like you'd get that anyway, Rhys stole it. You guys are gonna take all my clothes til I got nothing, aren't you?" He laughed quietly, rubbing the back of his neck.
The sleepy assassin perked up at that, likely at the thought of maiming Rhys to get back something of Tim’s. “I can get it back for you.” He provided, “’sides, I am gonna give this back, just wanted something comfy to put on.” It was followed by a yawn as he rubbed at his eyes.

“Heyyy...Got a...problem. Swing by my office when you get time - by which I mean, if you still wanna be paid: right now.”
An untenable situation greets his morning shift. The leftovers of the previous night spent merrily inebriated had apparently left an acrid taste in the mouth of a few incensed individuals. Certain intractable statements had been parted with freely, ranging from the insulting to outright mean in terms of subject matter. As a direct result, those affected requested suitable recompense, appearing to favour physical justice over monetary offerings.
They wanted to punch him square in the jaw, and he wasn’t going to give them the chance.
Pooling his resources, Jack turned to the easiest option at his disposal, calling upon the services of his body double to lend a hand. He can but hope the request he sent to ‘Jack’s ECHO communicator finds him in a speedy manner; for time is certainly not in the engineer’s favour, especially when he was unable to recall who wanted revenge or what he had said exactly to earn their ire in the first place.

goodtobejack replied to your post: For those who wonder why people don’t like Fiona...
let me add to this: it’s very obvious that rhys’s character (concept and personality) was largely influenced by jack who is a fan favorite of the fandom. fiona’s character was largely influenced by nisha, who people often ignore as jack’s canon girlfriend in favor of other jack ships. not to mention most female characters in borderlands fandom are demonized anyway so fiona’s yet another one that falls under the tracks))
Ehhhh....
I’m with you on the Nisha bit as she’s one of my favorite characters, but I don’t see any of her in Fiona. Nisha’s actually fun and interesting.
I haven’t, however, seen the female characters in Borderlands demonized by the fandom FOR being female (though this could just be me not seeing wherever it is which is highly possible XD). I’ve seen characters that are female being demonized, but it’s usually for other reasons;
Lilith: Because she’s the “antagonist” to the fan favorite Sasha: Because many people didn’t appreciate the forced romance with Rhys Nisha: Not so much demonized but does tend to be forgotten
That has nothing to do with them being female, even if sometimes the arguments are dumb (I personally love those three). Hell, I’ve seen more of the OPPOSITE where the female characters are put on a pedestal by the fandom because they’re female and anyone claiming not to like them for X reason is immediately called sexist or misogynistic even if their reasoning have nothing to do with them being women.
Fiona’s character probably isn’t as popular because she’s flat, boring, is barely funny, and in general is UNRELATABLE. She’s the perfect badass, she never really reacts to anything, she NEVER messes up or embarrasses herself, and never truly struggles. The writers give us no real reason to give a shit about her, and instead jam her down our throats which tends to turn your audience off. (Again, I blame this more on bad writing because I feel she could have been an awesome character if just used differently and that’s where half my salt comes from)
Rhys on the other hand is VERY relatable (not even taking into account the whole “Jack” connection). He’s cocky, sometimes cowardly, he makes mistakes, he’s out of place and unprepared for Pandora, even the smallest things are a struggle for him, and he goes through some serious character development even by the end of episode 1. We like and relate to Rhys, we cheer for him because we watch him struggle to overcome even smaller things, and it’s his flaws that we can relate to.
It has nothing to do with him being a man and Fiona being a woman, it’s (at least for most people I’ve seen) a case of Good vs Bad writing.

@goodtobejack wants to make a deal with a Demon 😈
All it took was a little bit of want and desire. Something so simple yet so powerful at the same time. And so easy to pull a poor soul in. Whether it was a legitimate summoning or something that the demon felt he could be called as quick as a snap of one’s fingers. And in the same motion, he could grant the construct of desire more or less. It all came down to the fine details afterall and if people were not specific and worded themselves carefully well...
It wasn’t always pretty.
But, still, he wasn’t one to pass up a good bit of fun. And his latest target seemed like it was going to be more than a bit and he loved the thought. He loved the pull he got from this man and in a just like a snap of one’s fingers he was right where he wanted to be. Rhys wasn’t too far from the doppelganger but still out of sight from him and any of the other patrons for now at least. With a flick of his wrist and a small murmur under his breath he looked as close to a human as he could possibly be.
Humming a happy tune to himself he easily slid up next to him and took up a seat. He ordered something fruity as he leaned against the bar, his head tilting a bit lazily to look at the other.
“Hello there, Handsome” he started off sweetly to gain some sort of conversation. “This seat isn’t taken is it? I don’t want to start a fight at some bar over something silly such as this.”

goodtobejack replied to your post: goodtobejack replied to your post: ...
I literally never said it was for /being/ female, friend, lmao. moxxi is demonized for what she did to jack in blps. yet people will automatically forgive jack of all his wrongdoings just because he’s charming and funny. fiona is just “flat and boring” because she gets lost in the sea of other characters, namely rhys because everyone relates to the soft dorky boy and not the orphan raised in the slums))
Oh, well that’s the way I read it XDD whoops!
I think more ‘cause them being female... really has nothing to do with it. For example I’ve seen a lot more fan works of Maya rather than Salvador. These characters just happen to be female (probably because Jack’s male XD). The way I read it was kind of like if someone said; “The fandom demonizes redheads!” You assume they mean if they weren’t redheads they wouldn’t be demonized even if they were the same.
And don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen this kind of treatment with female characters in other fandoms, so I know it happens, I just haven’t seen that specifically in this one; usually it’s for other reasons (be them dumb ones or not).
Yeah, I think a lot of characters get this treatment with Jack because they made him a little TOO likable and charming (probably Damian Clarke’s fault XD), so people automatically go against anyone that goes against him... even though he’s an awful person. I personally love Jack being a piece of shit (if you couldn’t tell), but yeah I have seen people try to say he’s not that bad or something which- no! Let my evil piece of garbage be an evil piece of garbage!
(Putting the rest under a cut because it’s long, but I’m mostly focused on the mechanics of storytelling because I’m a nerd. Basically why I believe Fiona’s a poorly written character:)
I don’t have a problem with people who like Fiona, I can see why (and again I love Fiona RPers most of the time), but speaking as far as what makes a good character... I’m sorry, she’s NOT written well. It’s not because she’s overshadowed by Rhys (though admittedly she is), it’s because she does not grow or change at all through the story, and barely emotes or loses anything. The ONLY times I was remotely invested in Fiona was when she thought she lost Sasha because she actually SHOWED EMOTION. Otherwise it’s just this “suave”, “never lose your cool” attitude no matter what happens (which I hate just as much in male characters)- even her so-called “embarrassing” moment with Vallory was... just her freezing up for a moment. Whoo-hoo.
I THINK they might have been trying to go with “only sane person” or the “straight man” with her character by not giving her a kooky personality, which could be very funny for this series, but even that they didn’t do well. She would have to really REACT to the insanity going on, but she doesn’t. The most we get is vague alarm, mild worry, a TINY bit of interest, or just a little smugness. She doesn’t seem to really be invested in her own story.
To quote the Nostalgia Critic: If the characters never express any emotion, why should the audience?
And really, a lot of that whole clip is my issue with Fiona (though not NEARLY as bad, and with slightly different context, but the general criticism.).
There are a lot of storytelling sins with the way her character is used:
Fiona’s character is a mess of TELLING rather than SHOWING- we’re TOLD that she has trust issues because of Felix, but we’re almost never SHOWN it (she’s the exact same pre-Felix as she is post-Felix). We’re TOLD that she gets greedy but SHOWN that it’s “never her fault” or that it never negatively effects her. We’re TOLD that she’s “only good at talking” yet every problem that needs to be solved through fighting she does near-flawlessly.
She does not grow as a character. From episode 1 to the very end, she is basically the same character, only likes Rhys more because he apologized and took the blame for HER mistakes. Otherwise, she has no real flaws so there’s no room for growth in the first place.
There’s no real struggle. Related to the above one, a character needs to struggle in order to grow. It doesn’t need to be physically- Vaughn struggles with his self-confidence, Sasha struggles with her blind hatred for Hyperion, Rhys struggles with... everything. But Fiona is rarely given a challenge, almost everything she does comes easily to her and she’s never had to take the consequences for her actions, or overcome some sort of negative trait, thereby preventing any growth or investment from the audience.
She’s not received realistically. Again related to the above point, other characters don’t react to Fiona in a way previously shown in the series. She’s given a free pass for almost everything and the people that ARE angry with her (usually for good reason) are portrayed as being just sore that she’s so badass or as overreacting. It’s not that she lies, bullies, and generally ruins several characters’ lives (that could make for a fun dynamic), it’s because she’s usually immediately forgiven for it or is shown as not being in the wrong when any other character is or would be. Rhys is called out (usually rightly) for ANYTHING he does that isn’t siding 100% with Fiona. Fiona is almost NEVER called out for some of the stuff she does or can do, and it makes the poor writing stand out when you have the two do the SAME thing back to back and Rhys is ridiculed while Fiona is praised.
Fiona is generally forced on the player. One of the reasons people didn’t like the Rhys/Sasha romance is because it was forced on the player. Generally speaking, if the writer tries to force something, be it a plot point, a relationship, or a character, rather than let it flow smoothly through the story, their audience will reject it. We can usually tell when we’re being fed something, and when someone suddenly breaks their established character to either praise Fiona or immediately forgive her rather than make her work for their approval, it jars us out of the story.
It doesn’t have anything to do with her being an orphaned street kid (the series is full of tragic shit like that so it doesn’t really effect much, it’s pretty par for the course in the setting), it’s the fact that looking purely from a storytelling point of view (’cause it’s telltale) she’s not a dynamic character. She could have been, but the writers dropped the ball there.
