“Bookmarks are for readers, I can say whatever I want in them” has the same energy as “I can say whatever I want in public, it’s not illegal.”
Like yeah, you can technically say whatever you want in public. But you’re not free from people judging you or being upset with what you say.
Which is to say. If you’re being a dick in the public bookmarks of someone’s fic, yes people are allowed to be upset. And no, you’re not cool or edgy or “honest.” You’re just an asshole who doesn’t know what a private bookmark is.
#also fic writers aren’t paid authors on goodreads#they aren’t paid or trained like authors for criticism#not a rant about myself#even though I’ve had my fair share of rude bookmarks#this is @ that Reddit thread lol#rants#ao3#archive of our own#writing#fic writing#fic#fanfic

i hate fanfiction because what do you mean i just read the most beautiful, life altering, tear jerking piece of literature and it’s about two minecraft men and their beef with purple eye creatures? what do you mean i can’t talk about this with anyone because it is not socially acceptable? what do you mean i just have to go on with my day? what do you mean???
#it was a treebark fic i’ll be honest#and it was 10k words i should be getting goodreads credit for this shit#life series#mcyt#treebark#ao3#trafficblr#fanfic

Actually it should be illegal for authors to write book series whose title is one normal english word and have it be extremely good but not very popular. Do you want to curse me to struggle with tags???
#cradle#hierarchy#examples right there. the hierarchy tag is just bots i think#anyway i struggle because is it hierarchy (what it says on goodreads) or THE hierarchy (what ao3 put it as which is embarrassing because#i tagged my fic with just hierarchy and its the only fic. so yeah)#anyway the tags that are actually usable i guess#cradle series#cradle will wight#the hierarchy#hierarchy series#the will of the many#will wight#james islington

there’s a special place in hell for people who review fics on goodreads and mark them down for being “too short”
#anyone who adds fics to goodreads in the first place is a weirdo and you can tell them I said that#but like what are you on about#too short#people whose first exposure to fanfic was ATYD are a different breed they really are

For the second time in three years, I've successfully managed to get my fics taken off goodreads. STOP!!! PUTTING!!! THEM!!!! ON!!!!! GOODREADS!!!!!!!!! It's not published! I don't care about your reading goals, nor do I care to see your reviews with stars where you can discuss what I did well/didn't.
Every fic I've ever written has been for fun, in my free time. Unpaid, without an editor, just the worms in my brain telling me what to do. This is NOT flattering- and I don't care if there are fanfic authors who think it is. They're WRONG and frankly, they don't support the community and the overwhelming requests from writers asking people to not do this. Clout is literally a disease.
Please, I am BEGGING people to stop doing this. Count it in your journals, leave your reviews on AO3 and treat fanfiction like community collaboration- I gave this to you so we can talk about it, do you feel as insane about these characters as me? Stop treating fanfic like a consumable item you're entitled to do whatever you like with.
#i will pull IKP if I find it on goodreads again like PLEASE#be COOL#the vast majority of fic writers do not appreciate this#and nothing sucks more than an anon sending you the link and seeing people ripping apart the way you structure sentences#would have given five stars but too many typos” I DID THIS IN MY FREE TIME AT WORK OH MY GOD???#i didnt get an advance from a publishing house nor an editor

intermezzo
circling the lives of two brothers who have just lost their father, intermezzo spoke to my heart.
(just to start, the lack of quotations doesnt bother me at all. in fact, when i read my first rooney book, normal people, the lack of them did not even phase me. it was only after seeing multiple people being offended on the internet i realised that it was such a big controversy.)
the joycean writing style appealed to me and the stream of conscious thoughts made it feel like i was reading the characters journal.
when i started the book i was certain that i would relate to ivan, the younger brother, the chess prodigy. mostly because of his personality (not brilliance). shy, reserved, and an awkward conversationalist. i saw myself reflected in the way ivan carried himself. a lil too familiar with being afraid to exist in the moment and claiming space for yourself. struggling with his falling rank in chess and wanting to succeed, ivan soon finds peace and love with a women twice his age. a person who understands him better than most.
you have all these dreams that you're going to keep getting better and better. and then in reality you just start getting worse, and you don't even understand why.
but as the story progressed, i saw peters perspective more clearly. as the elder sibling he felt compelled to check up on ivan. to talk to him after the death of their father. despite struggling with his own issues regarding mental health and love life, peter still makes the effort to give space in his life to his family. an unreciprocated action.
peters seemingly posh life is disturbed by his ongoing indecisiveness. actually, that may not be the right term, he wasn't entirely indecisive. he knew he was in love with both the women in his life. sylvia, his college sweetheart, and naomi, the twentysomething college student. starting with a sexual connection in exchange for money and material possessions, their relationship grows to be more domestic and emotionally charged. meanwhile, peter is still in love with his ex, sylvia. they don't want him to choose. eventually, they arrive at an understanding. a poly situation thatleaves peter with residing guilt.
after i finished the book, three interactions stuck with me
peter and sylvias arguement: still best friends after their breakup, they have grown to find comfort with each other. when peter tries to make a move, they get into a fight where sylvia opens up about the changes in her life following her accident. it left her with chronic pain. they talk about how sex is not a part of her life anymore and they cannot regress to the way things were. sylvias vulnerability and peters longing lead to the crux of their current relationship, i just want you to remember me the way i was.
his life in danger of becoming tolerable for a minute, why not go out of his way to aggrieve and distress the only person who could put up with him
sylvia and ivans conversation about the hat problem: the puzzle made me think and question language and truth. there isn't much to say except that even if youre not going to read the entire book, find a copy and read this excerpt.
language doesn't fit into reality like a toy fitting into a slot. reality is actually one thing and language something else
peter and ivans fight: most sibling dynamics are chaotic and disturbed. peter and ivan showcase this when they start talking about their dad and how their relationship has evolved since they were children. ivan, who once used to idolize peter, is now resentful and feels overshadowed. peter, the elder sibling who always had to shoulder the burden of parenting everyone in his family without appreciation, is burnt out. their conversation leads to a physical altercation, common sibling behavior.
i related to peter so much because
when things get difficult, you're gone. you're out of the room. and that's alright, i don't expect anything else. maybe with dad i did, but i learnt my lesson. he didn't want me to be his son, he wanted me to be his protector. and yours. so that's what i was. all my life, i was looking out for the both of you. and neither of you ever even had the decency to say thanks
there are more nuanced and complicated themes that occur throughout the plot. grief, resent, remorse, self doubt, suicidal thoughts, alcoholism, re-sheltering a dog, polygamy, absent parents.
i would love to illustrate more on this, however i just wanted to talk about peter and his struggle with existing on a day to day basis. unable to make decisions that don't harm the people around him. wanting to be a part of the family but not knowing how to without making a mess or feeling like more is owed. wanting someone to appreciate the efforts you put in. dealing with failure and grief. wanting to be a better person. wanting to make the right choice. wanting to feel safe and loved. wanting. and failing.
this is not a book review btw, just me telling u my favorite quotes and thoughts

Do you have Armand/Daniel fic recs to share? I’d love to hear about your favourite fics!!
omg this question made me realize I've been reading way less than I thought I was, and also I need to start actually using bookmarks because my memory is not it. I wish I had some more avant garde underground picks so forgive me if you've read these before!!
and then what? by andrealyn - maybe?? the first dm fic I read and really stuck in my brain like a little seed, I love memory altering stuff (also were the flowers orange? because hanahaki disease is my trope guilty pleasure and two truths and a liar because daniel's professional life is my other guilty pleasure)
the spiral is unspooling by reedroad - THEEE fic. to me. I'm behind a chapter because they're long but I love the narrative structure of the video tapes and daniel's relationship with his own memories, usually I don't read fics 100k+ words but really well paced. also love seeing dad daniel. dadniel.
the portrait of an angel drawn from memory by e_va - after s2 daniel turning, only one chapter so far but fun character exploration of the dynamics of the decision to turn daniel. very fun art imagery through-line re: armand. and a WEIRD DREAM which I of course am rendered helpless by
care and keeping by katplanet - not what I normally read just because I normally don't seek out explicit stuff but I feel like I saw it rec'd a lot. really good dialogue and character work. I keep thinking of it as just kinda of comfortable? fun to watch them figure stuff out in a character-focused way outside of anything supper plotty or world-ending
perfect victims by argestas - also not what I normally read and also also not what you asked for BUT I love louis here and I never talk about him enough so I'm throwing it out there anyway. as a member of tomshiv nation I can't help but love a complicated marriage where people make themselves unhappy. also armand is gaslighty and annoying in a really understated way that's very funny
that's all I've got for now but always happy to hear recs too!! I tend to read less when I'm writing a lot because idk I guess I'm doing that instead but I know there's some really good stuff out there
#asks#fic recs#thanks for asking!!#I love talking about fic it's like goodreads except everyone is nice (:

And now i want my neck bitten ...
... and can pls somebody help me with the heat???
Hello my lovely co-readers! I fell into my first A/B/O-fanfic and what can i say ... I have another fanfic-review or more ff-recommendation for you!
Mark of the serpent by @naromoreau and @summerofspock
Whats it about:
Prince Aziraphale is about to be crowned King of Angelhaven when he's taken captive by pirates. When he's sold as a pleasure slave to King Crowley, ruler of the nation readying for war with his, he is forced to keep his identity a secret as he tries to find a way home and keep peace. But not everything at King Crowley's court is as it seems and Aziraphale will have to face machinations of a Royal Court that are far more complex than he had thought. A Captive Prince AU with an omegaverse twist.
What i love about it:
❤️Well, for starters - this is my very first contact with the Omegaverse. I never read anything like this before.
Basically in this story it means that Crowley is an Omega, he is a male but can get pregnant (yes i googled it and yes there are even explanatory pages for that ... 😅 i just took it as given and read on). Aziraphale is a male Alpha. I have come across some A/B/O-stories so far but never started them. Why here? Well because of the plot - Aziraphale a prince and Crowley a King - and Az becoming a pleasure slave? I am sorry, but who am I to resist?
The whole setting is already like a tale, so this makes it a lot easier to just take Omegaverse in additionally.
🤷♀️That said if you never have read something like this before, mind the tags. Though i would like to add: i only read stories with happy ends and sometimes the tags are even a bit off-scaring and i am truly happy i just looked at the "eventual happy ending"-tag and dove right in.
❤️When you read the summary you already know the ending, right? I mean a prince, a king, rivaling kingdoms - come on! BUT - as always its the way how we get there and the plot here is twisted, which i found quite interesting.
🤔There is also a bit of tension here, you might even call it angst - i have to admit in the last third i once went back to check on the tags if it really predicted a happy ending. Go through with it - its worth it!
❤️Without any spoilers - there is quite a span where Aziraphale has to earn Crowleys trust and love. And though i sometimes thought Crowley was a bit overreacting (i think Demon Crowley wouldnt have been able to resist Aziraphale for so long 😂) - i actually found it very healing for ME to see Ziraphe so stable and safe in his love for Crowley.
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
OMG the explicit scenes! You have to know that in Omegaverse Omegas go into heat and Alphas into rut. You can imagine what happens to explicit scenes when the hormones kick in on top ... I think i am going in heat, too 😂
Look out for:
🤓a little bonus!!! there is an extra fanfic, one shot, telling Crowleys perspective on the first shared heat!
My favorite quote:
“Acceptance is a powerful thing. Once I accepted I could never stop loving you, things got easier.”
So if you like tales, are into very explicit scenes and want to give Omegaverse a try, this probably is a very good and easy start for you!
I am absolutely hooked and will look for more GOOFF (good-omens-omegaverse-fanfics) now. If you have some recs, pls comment!!! 🤗
Reading is not a hobby - it´s an attitude.🤍

GENTLE REMINDER
Just a gentle reminder to NOT add fanfic to sites such as Goodreads and the like. Fanfic exists in a legal grey area as transformative works but what we won't want to do is summon the Great Eye of Sauron that is publishers and rights holders to the little sandbox we all play in by making fanfic INCLUDED IN SEARCH RESULTS FOR THE ORIGINAL MEDIA.
I've had to email Goodreads support to get my fanfic removed from their site this morning, and I'm waiting on a response now.
Goddamn.
This is the only time I will ask nicely.

I often think about how it's been shown over and over again that chev reads romance not for some bullshit reason of understanding humans (as he claims) but because he likes them. I think about how he very clearly self inserts with these books too, like in that one event where he kept imagining himself and Emma as the main characters of the romance novels he was reading. like. that shit is so funny and sweet and endearing to me. this man would soooooo be into reader insert fan fiction if he was real like he would absolutely bitch about people writing the characters OOC or making them do dumb shit in a fanfic. chevalier "he would not fucking say that" michel is real to me idk
#this is just as funny to think about as him having a goodreads account#or a book review blog and tearing apart those shitty booktok romances#every time I think of chev canonically self inserting with the romance books he's reading I go a little more insane#I wish you were real you would've loved ao3#now that's certainly a fic idea. modern au anonymous fanfic writer chevalier. what genre does he write tho is the question#chevalier michel#random rambles

Listen I am chipping in to the fanfics on goodreads conversation to say it literally does not matter why you want a fic on goodreads. It doesn’t matter if it’s because you hold the (wrong) opinion that you want to treat fics like books. Or just really like them.
The fic writer has said no.
More than anything this is a conversation about consent. Do I really need to fucking tell you no means no. In any contexts.
#Im truly so tired of having to see peoples works taken out of their hands in increasingly unfair ways#I can't believe in 2023 fandom spaces we need to have this conversation but we do#A fic writer says please don't put my fics on wattpad/goodreads/ao3. It makes me feel bad/violated/uncomfortable#you listen because you understand human autonomy#if you don't youre acting out of your own entitlement#you did not put any work into this fic#therefore you do not get even a 1% say or hand in making these decisions

on today's episode of "hey fuckass did you know that fic authors can see the fucking bookmarks you make for their fics"
#mine#me: 'hey on a whim lets look at the bookmarks on spider's thread and see if anyone's- oh.'#the inspo for that fic is like a few smoldering embers anyway & that lowkey feels like pouring a bucket of fucking water on it#bitch this isnt goodreads you don't need to tear a fic apart & nitpick it if you didn't vibe with it#you could just. idk. leave it the fuck alone and not SHIT on it#also just#''Jasper (like from SU?) doesn’t seem like a great bard bc he isnt saying anything interesting' my brother in christ his mouth was sewn shu#like. what do you THINK HE'S GOING TO SAY#they don't have fics of their own (just... hp fic bookmarks (some of which are equally critical)#which. just kinda shows even more how invalid their opinion is.#but. can't address them or anything but if youre seeing this fuck you#fic: the silence of the spider's thread#the witcher
