The wallflowers of the deep 🌸
The mushroom soft coral, Heteropolypus ritteri, is one of the most common animals we see in the depths off the central coast of California. They are abundant on the jagged walls of Monterey Canyon and the rocky slopes of local seamounts. Fast currents running along the bottom can carry an abundance of plankton and other tiny bits of food. Heteropolypus extends delicate tentacles into the currents to snag a feast. When their tentacles are extended, they resemble a beautiful flower. When the tentacles are pulled in, they look more like their namesake—mushrooms.
Tumblr media
The abundance of mushroom soft corals and their diverse relationships with other bottom-dwelling animals tell us they are an important part of the seafloor community. But the intimate interactions among deep-sea animals only become apparent when we conduct regular surveys. We cannot protect what we do not understand. Our research is helping improve our baseline understanding of the largest environment on Earth, even if our encounters sometimes yield more questions than answers.
Tumblr media
We still have a lot to learn about Heteropolypus, including how a changing seafloor environment will impact them and their neighbors. But we do know that a healthy ocean is one of the best ways to fight climate change. We must act quickly to safeguard Heteropolypus and other denizens of the deep. Understanding how our actions affect the ocean is an important first step. Share what you have learned, and help us grow our community of ocean champions. Together, we can protect the remarkable residents of the ocean’s depths. Learn more about these remarkable residents of the deep.

From the bestselling author of The Cruel Prince, an astonishing graphic trilogy set in a faerie world, full of mystery, intrigue, and romance.
Tumblr media
From the amazing imagination of bestselling author Holly Black and acclaimed illustrator Ted Naifeh, a mysterious and wonderful faerie saga, for the first time in one volume.
Rue Silver's mother has disappeared... and her father has been arrested, suspected of killing her. But it's not as straightforward as that. Because Rue is a faerie, like her mother was. And her father didn't kill her mother -- instead, he broke a promise to Rue's faerie king grandfather, which caused Rue's mother to be flung back to the faerie world. Now Rue must go to save her -- and defeat a dark faerie that threatens our very mortal world.

Qualities of a good neighbor
Some of the important qualities of a good neighbor Ignores you as you ignore them Has grown-up children who live far away or, in the worst-case scenario, if they have young children, the kids do not show up at your door every ten minutes and ask you for chocolates Do not play loud music Do not make it a habit of coming over to bore you with their old-timer stories If old people, do not…

The Neighborly Code
What makes a good neighbor? A fantastic neighbor is kind of like that comfy old pair of sneakers – you don’t really notice them, but they’re always there when you need them. They’re not the nosy type, so you can do your thing without feeling like you’re under a microscope. These neighbors, they’re like the guardians of personal space. They won’t bug you about your life or your choices. They…

I have to thank my neighbor for her fresh chickenly benevolence in this time of eggcruciating prices. Of course, I will be returning some of them as baked goods. 🙂 #goodneighbors https://www.instagram.com/p/Cnz_u3QyuCKJnfGS9amiKjLLT3wArzVrgHExhw0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Yesterday I finally got onboard the @deltakingsac (Sac bucket list!) and we checked out how much the river had swelled. Steps from buildings go right into the water. I love this video. You really get an idea of how giant and fast this tree is moving down the river when it gets to the guy on the dock. He's as big as part of the root! . Big reminder - Sacramento has an unhoused population BIGGER THAN SAN FRANCISCOS. Every bit of shelter that existed before this storm is probably devastated. You can help out from anywhere by buying things on wish lists from grassroot organizations like @sacramento.homeless.union @sacramento.punks.with.lunch (Links in their profiles) I'll also be collecting tarps and other items for them at #trivia this Wednesday at #tworiverscider . These are direct action groups with items going directly to those in need and no moral quandary like dealing with awful 'charities' like salvation army (ew, please don't ever). . . #sacramentoartist #sacramento #flooding #norcal #sacramentohomelessunion #sacpunkswithlunch #reggiebugmuncher #americanriver #sacramentoriver #riverlife #goodneighbors #newyear (at Delta King Old Sacramento) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnNeykYyavu/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

You know how ghouls can hibernate? Do you think Goodneighbor has any sections where they can go to do that safely? Perhaps during times where supplies run low?
To be honest, I feel like I’ve only mainly seen feral ghouls hibernate since you tend to wake them up when you’re going through abandoned train yards and ruins.
I did notice a place up in the Old State House’s attic where one could be monitored though…just in case.
