Even as Rosegarden prepares to produce a new radiophonic documentary which will be entitled Diane Wolkstein Remembered (more details will follow soon), tonight we have learned of the unhappy passing of Pacifica/KPFA–FM radio producer/presenter and Negativland member Don Joyce. While his work with the madcap culture jammers stays long in the memory banks (you'll certainly never hear the phrase "That's the letter U and the numeral 2" the same way again), his long running radio show Over the Edge is a huge part of the United States' non–commercial radio legacy. The title couldn’t be more apt: it was off the wall, sometimes provocative or even profane (thanks to those who called in to be part of the show's "receptacle programming" format), but it was never tiring or less than fascinating. His rôle with Negativland also helped insure that there would continue to be serious discourse on the matters of Fair Use, sampling, and how media collages work.
The Internet Archive has started to make available a huge chunk of the Over the Edge archives for free and unrestricted access (with more on the way), and it could not come at a more opportune time. However you decide to approach sound and media work, you will benefit from exposing yourself to what Don Joyce did during his lifetime of late nights at KPFA and on behalf of the Universal Media Netweb.
Rest in peace, Don, and may you be always greeted up above with the phrase "Good Hello."
Cue Vangelis.
UPDATE 2015.07.25: Portland, Orgeon’s KBOO–FM offered their own tribute to the man on Radio Lost and Found. You can access the aircheck audio at Kill Ugly Radio.
UPDATE 2015.07.28: The final Over the Edge show, “There is No Don,” is yours now to own, courtesy of the Negativland family.
