Pittsburgh’s MELT Airs Astounding New Spin, ‘Replica of Man’
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Armageddon, religion, technology, shame and greed -- here's a band dealing with some heavy lyrical themes, and doing it with excellence. It's prog-stoner metal trio MELT from the Steel City, and today they're giving us an advance listen to the upcoming album, 'Replica of Man' (2023)
The album opens with narration from an interview long past from the incredible age of Pandora's Box tampering that the 20th century was: "The concept of the thinking machine has been man's dream for centuries, also his nightmare." To accompany this roving commentary on creeping technocracy, the bass slaps out a wicked jazzy stoner groove with vivacity and conviction. By the time drums join in earnest, it feels like we're in Prodigy territory, with metal vocals and doomy riffs. Recording engineer Nate Campisi takes great care in capturing a lusty sound from all of the instruments, and this serves as a captivating vessel for the message:
It fulfills the prophecy Unstoppable technology Steel has seized the upper hand We concede as it commands It’s too late to intervene Mating man with machine No forgiveness for the damned Heed the replica of man
Indeed, we are several chapters deep into a fledgling Technological State and already the human animal is being stretched and contorted in ways that are alien to his nature, but somehow pleasing to the great labyrinth of circuits that make up our computers and smartphones. It's no longer fodder for fun sci-fi blockbusters like Terminator, but an urgent question for our time as to what makes us truly thrive as human beings and how technology can assist us toward that end, not hurt us. Obviously, the band struck a chord with me straight away!
"It isn’t passive music," remarks frontman Joey Troupe. "It has weight, inertia and leaves a mark. We are writing the soundtrack to global annihilation. That includes elements of destruction, despair, gratitude and sometimes, hope."
Elsewhere on the album, the band conjures Lucifer's Friend vibes on "Problem Child" and "Skeleton Girl" exhibits an infectious nu-metal energy -- both captured within a cocoon of fuzzy low-end and performed with all the vibrancy of the garage experience. "Swamp Water" is a good, old-fashioned swampy stoner romp that would make a good companion to Weed Is Weed's "Alligator Crawl." And "Shame" would fit in great with the likes of Mudhoney and Coal Chamber.
The album closer is bathed in dank, watery shadows, with a grungy, forlorn bass groove. It's called "Hive Mind" and lives in the neighborhood of Black Sabbath and Electric Wizard. The song is about how the secrets of life evade us because we're stuck in rigid mindsets ("Sacrament is our demise"), and struggle to find a meaningful role in this artificial maze of concrete and asphalt ("Disguised by life, destroyed by time"). At least that's my interpretation. As I said, the lyrics are thought provoking -- but there's no mistaking the last lines of the track:
We all seek a higher mind So take your breath and blaze a fire Take flight. Ignite. Leave them all behind
Melt's Replica of Man is a virtuosic blend of influences, captivating themes, and crisp, joyful musicianship. Out Friday, July 7th (pre-order here). Stick it on a playlist with Snail, GoodEye, Rickshaw Billie's Burger Patrol, Null, and Deep Purple.
Give ear...

J.J. Young (drums) has played in or appeared with over 10 different musical projects, including Fortune Teller, Daisy Chain, and his own solo project, BITE. He is also a co-founder of Steel City Death Club, a Pittsburgh music multimedia collective.
James May (bass/vocals) started Aberrant Kingdom in 2008 and has also played with Spare Arrows. Since, the band has headlined shows across the region, been named the WYEP Artists of the Week, held a featured spot on the Deutschtown Music Festival mainstage, and opened for Silver Synthetic of Third Man Records. Their second studio album, Replica of Man, will be released July 7, 2023.

Currently Reading: Treasure Island by Robert Luis Stevenson. For most of my life, I was mostly familiar with it through the 2002 Disney adaptation of the story, which was completely different from the original. Heck I didn't even know that it was an actual story until my mid-teens. So in combination of wanting to expand my media literacy and Dr. Livesey memes, I decided to bite the bullet and buy the book. So far, I've been pretty engaged with it. I had know no idea that it was told through Jim Hawkins's POV.
Last Song: Hajanga by Jacob Collier. About a year ago(?) I found this interesting Youtube channel that uploads videos of miscellaneous performances by musicians and puts a music sheet on the bottom to show the notes they're singing or playing. Also they put funny titles up to entice viewers. What I didn't know was that Jacob has a music career and I got the chance to listen to one of his songs. Highly recommend listening to the live MIT performance of Hajanga.
Last Series: King Of The Hill. I mainly put that on for background noise since I've seen it a hundred times. There are some other shows that I want to watch but I want to commit to it without any distractions.
Last Movie: Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One. While this is the 7th installment in the series, it's actually my 2nd viewing--last one being the first movie I rented from the library. So far my impressions is that this is a series full of twists and turns. You can never be so sure of who you can trust the first time around.
Currently Working On: Nothing concrete at the moment. I've mostly have ideas that are swarming around in my head that may or may not come to fruition. Last thing I ever uploaded to AO3 back in January was a Deltarune fanfic called Winter Wonderland (AKA What's Eating Noelle Holiday?), a sorta post Chapter 2 story were Noelle experiences a nightmare involving her missing/possibly dead sister and how she comes to grips with that with most of the Kris and Susie Darkworld stuff being in the background. I had original plans for a short story involving Dess and Asriel but that's scrapped as of right now. Also, I'm currently hyperfixated on Elemental and it's still very likely that some ideas I have for THAT may never come to life. Probably the most vicious cycle of any given writer.
I'll leave a link for the aforementioned story but be warned, I was mostly press for time trying to get that out so it may be not be my 100%. So if I ever go back and revise it, you'll know why. https://archiveofourown.org/works/44080062/chapters/110833800

Thanks for the advice guys.
But I do find writing about as difficult, if not more so, than drawing. So it doesn't really cut down the time spent on it, and makes it less enjoyable as well. I understand that I can post writing without pictures, I'm just not that confident in my skills. I draw first, match words second, not the other way around.
General communication is hard enough for me, so having other admins is gonna have to be a no.
I think how I'll do this is I'll push through to the end of Fire and Ice the way I have been. Be prepared to see a lot more sketchiness and simpler color palettes.
I'll either do less parts for the next book, or post less often to make longer posts.
Once I'm done with the goodeye first arc, I'll use animatics for the badeye story. Then I'll figure out where to go from there.
#anouncement#and I'm really sorry for the hold up#i think the weight of the project has finally hit me#plus I'm more busy this break than i thought i'd be

Swedish Stoner-Doom Trio OCKRA Air Melancholy Full-Length ‘Gratitude’
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Artwork by Arjen Kunnen
Progressive doom meets dark rock and folk on the new album 'Gratitude' (2023) by Gothenburg's OCKRA. It would, of course, be tedious (if not impossible) to trace back the various strands of influence on the songs before us. As I stated in my review of their EP, 'Infinite Patterns' (2020):
It’s a bit tricky to draw a direct comparison between OCKRA and other acts. After all, it’s not often we hear a band attempt blending progressive rock with doom metal!
The name Ockra is not, as I briefly assumed, a reference to "okra" (that dreaded nemesis of my childhood, along with brussel sprouts), but rather "ocher" in the Swedish tongue. Ocher, that is, the color and substance of earth. Thus it is no surprise to find that Ockra's songs deal with earthly matters of the here-and-now, leading off with the track "Introspection," which preludes such songs as "Acceptance," "Tage Wie Dieser" ("Days Like This"), and "Tree I Planted." This is music that's meant to be intensely relatable.
"Weightless Again" starts as a straight-up garage rocker that features robust drumming from Jonas Nyström, bouncing about joyfully amidst stirring vocal harmonies and traditional doom riffage. The piece slows up and gets misty, with an aura of sadness at about three-minutes. I praised Cruthu for capturing a similar spirit on 'The Angle of Eternity' (2017), which takes a folk-like approach to writing doom. As the song crescendos, confidence rises, and we return to the peppiness of the beginning, but the atmosphere is still bittersweet, and the chorus remains psychologically piercing. The vibe is "things will get better, just keep hanging on" -- or, to quote the song, you'll be weightless again.
"Tree I Planted" is singer-songwriter fare that hints at the old country and western tradition. If you like the songs that Alice in Chains singer Jerry Cantrell writes, this one is a cinch. Alex Spielhaupter's vocals are earnest, with a serious metallic edge, and get bluesy at times, backed by guest vocalist Stefanie Spielhaupter.
Fourth track "Acceptance" is bound to find its way onto a "Metal Classics" playlist one of these days. From the opening riff on, guitarist Erik Björnlinger had me hooked. The vocals are dark like Pentagram, moody like Goodeye, producing a bonafide earworm of a chorus. The song is thoughtfully structured, took, with a bridge of overlapping voices that brings The Byrds to mind.
The folk influence really shines through on the next track, "We, Who Didn't Know." What might have found life as a two-minute interlude, gets fleshed out into a full-fledged seven-minute song. After a soft vocal introduction (which references "Weightless Again"), the balance shifts to a largely instrumental portion. The whole feel for me was one of daisy-lit hills, until the band goes full metallic at the four-minute mark. Again, Ockra goes for grand, with a crescendo and a full-on rush of soundwaves launching an impassioned chorus, finishing with the solitary note of the guitar.
"Imorgon Här" ("Tomorrow Here") follows, and while the title is in Swedish, the lyrics are still in English. The song is has got an upbeat, bluesy tempo (not unlike Graveyard), but the strength of Ockra's harmonic singing distinguishes them here in a way that is simply magical.
"Tage Wie Dieser" ("Days Like This") is sung entirely in Swedish. Personally, I love when bands include a song or two in their native tongue. If you approach vocals as just another instrument in the band (rather than someone telling you how to think or feel about the song), you may find you appreciate the experience all the more. Here the vocal harmonies are consoling and heavenly.
Suffice it to say, there were things that grabbed me upon first listen (namely "Acceptance"), but the second spin turned out to be even more meaningful, probably because the material was more familiar and I could lean into the songs more comfortably.
Look for Ockra's Gratitude on Friday, May 26th, releasing digitally and on compact disc on Argonauta Records (pre-order here). Stick it on a playlist with Young Hunter, Dunbarrow, and Asteroid.
Give ear...

LISTEN: Ockra - 'Gratitude' (2023)
SOME BUZZ
The band OCKRA arose in early 2018 in Gothenburg from what was left of the stoner doom band Sulphur Dreams. With a strong desire to stretch musical barriers away from what is known as classic stoner or doom metal, the trio around Jonas Nyström, Erik Björnlinger and Alex Spielhaupter set out to develop their songwriting skills and find their own style under the new name OCKRA. The band has a wide range of influences from metal to folk, americana and jazz.
The first EP with four songs was self-recorded in a 'DIY' spirit at the home studio in Onsala during spring/summer 2019 (with guest singer Ammy from EPA/Lastkaj14) and was released in March 2020 via Argonauta Records a week before the first lockdown put everything on hold.
The songs were well received by the media and the reviews in online and print magazines turned out very positive. As an example, the EP got 12 out 15 points in Germany's largest print magazine for extreme metal "Legacy."
Gratitude by OCKRA
Infinite Patterns by OCKRA
During the summer of 2021, the trio went out to the little village Hesedorf near Hamburg to record their debut album 'Gratitude' together with Peter Voigtmann (The Ocean Collective, Heads.) at his studio "Die Mühle" (the mill).
The calm environment and the nature around made it possible to go into a state of creative isolation. That may have had an impact on the music, which now has more elements of singer-songwriter and folk music.
The lyrics have been written in the shade of the pandemic and severe illnesses amongst close friends and family members in this period. Writing these very personal lyrics has been some kind of therapeutic and despite the severeness of the topics they are meant to provide a glimpse of hope.
