IT’S   PAINFUL   TO   HEAR   A   CHILD   AND   SEE   A   CHILD   WHO   ISN’T   A   CHILD.         dick   understands   a   little   of   that,   but   he   doesn’t   fool   himself   into   thinking   he   can   really   and   truly   relate   to   damian’s   experiences.      so   he   doesn’t   try.      he   doesn’t   say   anything,   in   fact      —      not   at   first,   for   once.      he   just   wraps   his   arms   around   his   little   brother,   no   matter   the   prickly   edges.   

“      i   see   you,   damian,      ”            he   finally   says,   quiet   and   gentle.            “      i   do,   and   i   always   have.      and   i   still   wanna   take   you   back   home,   okay?      so   let’s   just   go   .   .   .      ”            dick   wants   this   to   go   the   easy   way      —      he   really   does.      but   either   way,   he’s   not   leaving   damian   here.      he   tightens   his   grip   ever   so   slightly.
