Haruka - childhood crushes/unrequited love/obsessive love - he gets one target real good but often misses the other one leading to a lot of strife lmao

Yuno - desire/passion/one night stands sort of deal - often shoots at random / sort of like chiyo, more blasé and carefree about the job

Fuuta - demolitions!! explosive, destructive love? - the kind that gets outta hand quickly

Muu - she just stabs people. love that hurts probably

Mahiru - she probably LOVES this job, and is the most enthusiastic by far. The image of her with a HUGE Gatling gun raining down love bullets with a huge smile on her face. cracks me up

Shidou - something something devotion something something grief. his matchups always go very well, but inevitably when one loses the other things go bad bad

Kazui - hidden desires, repression, or fake love… ): if Hinako is still alive I could see that being his mission trying to find her perfect match

Amane - bonks people over the head with a staff—-jkjk. I’m a little unsure of how to connect the themes with her but little Amane with a little hat and vest going off to play Cupid is such a cute visual

Mikoto - likes to pair people up based on appearances, similar interests, or “vibes”. However, cannot shoot a gun to save his life. how is he not fired. (John, however, does it quite well)

Kotoko - here to BRAWL. But she watches over protective love / tough love, probably.

As for Es, I guess they’re either also a Cupid or there to supervise them all LMAO, like a general or something. tries to judge the best pairs but trying to corral this group is probably like herding cats

I feel really bad for feeling relief after realizing Hinako was chosen over Gin,,, and I let out a cry when Hayasaka was the first doll to be picked!!! ToT

When midori picked anzu,,, good god,,, I was so emotionally devastated I couldn't go on

But I had too!!! So when Ranmaru died,,, my partner changed the final dialogue to "Sara, I'm sorry." And I had to do a double take while watching the spinner animation go offfff ToT oh my god I felt DEVASTATEDDDD

I'm glad gin is okay,,, he's my baby boy but,,, at what cost ToT

KURUMADA RUNNING OUT OF BATTERY HURTTTT,,, AND MAI GETTING STABBED!?!?! I WAS FINALLY STARTED TO GET ATTATCHED TO HER,,,, and maple,,, poor girlie,,, forced to he straight,,, /J

Milgram drought be hitting hard... Anyway I was thinking what an anime of each prisoner's personal story might look like (assuming all isolated from each other and Milgram as a facility does not exist) ((also assume each 12 episodes long)) also assuming they're psychological dramas because. Milgram

Haruka: The main appeal is the artstyle, drawn like animated child's drawings for most of the time but a few scenes an episode is instead depicted in starkly realistic illustrations (not animated). It's told from the perspective of Haruka who keeps insisting he has a good life even as all the facts point otherwise, finally culminating in the murder late in the show, at which point the artstyle changes to be a strange mix of the previous two

Yuno: What first presents itself as a peppy slice-of-slice soon devolves into a painfully raw story of a teen girl. The winner of many awards but not that popular with most people who claim to find it too dry and boring

Fuuta: The murder happens towards the end of episode two but it isn't revealed to the audience exactly what happens until much later. Fuuta's behaviour clearly changes after that point and he keeps getting harassed by people who were previously friendly with him, but the actual flashback reveal is only in ep 8. The show leans very heavily into the "is he a bad person?" question and the fandom is known for starting debates about it in the comments of completely unrelated posts

Muu: It was a dark setup from the start but not many people expected a murder in episode 7. The anime switches POV between Muu and Rei until Rei dies, then it switches between Muu and a student counsellor (who doesn't know about the murder and is just trying to solve the bullying but the tension comes from the fact that the audience and Muu keep being worried about her potentially learning about the murder)

Shidou: The most niche of the bunch, some people weren't a fan of how medically accurate it was while others rejoiced in that fact. The whole thing is a flashback as it's established that Shidou has left the medical industry in the first episode but it is slowly revealed why and the circumstances behind his family's deaths as it goes on

Mahiru: Yuno's might have been a bit misleading at first but everyone who saw the promo material knew what was going down. Mahiru's managed to keep the dark twists under wraps, genuinely being sold as a cute love story though there were hints from the start. It's unclear when exactly the death happened because as it goes on it starts timeskipping and flashbacking without warning and it's clear that Mahiru isn't quite sure herself of what is actually happening

Kazui: Hinako is dead before the series even starts and it is actually told from the perspective of someone who works with Kazui slowly uncovering what happened out of morbid curiousity. Kazui is the very definition of unreliable narrator and nobody knows what to make of whatever information comes directly from him. Some fans don't like the way the show never seemed to decide on a single answer as to what happened while others praise it for it

Amane: The fandom is small but loud (though it is always recommended as "this one will tear your heart out"); the tale of a child embroiled in an awful home life, using a unique visual style of poppy colours and thick outlines to sharply contrast the horrible things being portrayed. The murder happens at the end of the last episode, giving the closest thing to a "happy ending" they could achieve for Amane, though it is left ambiguous what would happen to her next

Mikoto: Told in a non-chronological style, the reveal of the murder is towards the end (around episode 10) leaving the rest of the time as wrapup as Mikoto finally comes to accept the truth of the situation. There are still arguments in the fandom years after it ended if the murder was metaphorical or not

Kotoko: She's presented as a really cool vigilante at first but then it slowly unravels as she reveals more of her violent side and that her kill count is a LOT higher than previously thought. Her personality is divisive among fans but everyone can agree that the opening is a banger

DISCLAIMER: I just realised that some of these can be read as me throwing shade on the fans of a particular character; I promise 100% that isn't the case this was just a fun thought experiment!

Read the Bureaucrat to Villaines manga and it's SO much fun to read how did nobody thought of this trope SOONER

I love how the author didn't make Kenzaburo into weird creepy old pervert and actually wrote him as a proper (otaku) middle age man whose fussing over how to be a good villainess because he IS one but he can't do it properly because he's so sweet and wholesome

Love the whole otaku family that's going on too, an otaku dad and an otaku mom makes an otaku child I absolutely adore Hinako

And the way Kenzaburo is turning Grace back into that wholsome sweet tiny child she was before she was given Etiquette Education without even knowing? Crying tears of joy omg

(Manga spoilers!!) And I also wonder what the cage meant we see Grace in during the dream Kenzaburo had. Maybe that IS the real Grace and her conciousness is trapped inside her head and can't get out because Kenzaburo is currently in HER body so she can't use her body in anyway.

Current opinion is 9/10, the worldbuilding progress is slow in a good way. We get to see Grace's past and other's History that isn't worth mentioning in the original timeline I really like it. Can't wait for the rest of the manga to get translated and animated

I was bored and decided to put too much effort into assigning ACNH characters to YTTD characters. No one asked but everyone will get it anyway.

Sara got Maple (It's kind of sad that Maple didn't get Maple, but oh well...). I just thought it would be a good choice for Sara. And also Maple's education hobby was a deciding factor for this.

Reko got Cherry. I don't think I have to explain it. Cherry also looks like NaoReko child. She got sisterly personality and music hobby. It's a perfect character for Reko.

Nao got Poppy. Poppy just reminded me a little about Nao, so I decided to go with this choice. 💖

Kanna got Lily. I can't explain it but I just felt it with my soul, lol. And because they're both really cute and they both will take over the world soon. <33

Joe got Kevin. Kevin just looked a little like Joe. Plus, in ACNH he got a jock personality, what gives me Joe's vibe, so I went with Kevin.

Keiji got Kyle. Do I need to explain? Just look at his eyes. His cranky personality is visible from far away already.

Q-Taro got Rory. Red hair and jock personality? Yup, that's him. It's a shame Rory didn't have fitness hobby. An alternative choice was Mott, who is a jock and got a fitness hobby, but Mott didn't really give me Q-Taro's vibe.

Gin got Dom. I was thinking for a while about who Gin should get. And in the end I decided to go with Dom. This rainbow spiral also reminded me and @goldyluna about rainbow infinity symbol, what is also a symbol of autism, so it was a deciding factor for me. Also, Gin and Dom are cute, so they're perfect.

Kai got Chief. A cranky cook that looks like he would also be your bodyguard. This is them.

Shin got Wolfgang. I must admit, it was kind of hard for me to choose someone for Shin. Especially because I really wanted personality to be at least similar. So I decided to choose Wolfgang, who is cranky. ✨ And for me he kind of looks like Shin.

Mishima got Cobb. I don't think I have to explain. The looks. The personality. The hobby. It's full-blooded Mishima. Jock whose hobby is education. It's him in another universe, in universe of crossing animals.

Alice got Lobo. Similarly to Shin, I had some trouble with choosing someone for Alice. But in the end I think Lobo is a good choice for him. ✨

Sue Miley got Kitty. No special reason behind this, I just thought Kitty would be a nice choice for Sue Miley. :3 meow

Tia Safalin got Deena. Very cute, both liking education. Tia is Deena and Deena is Tia.

Maple got Merry. They both look like a nice company for some tea. Also, Merry's fringe gives me Maple's vibe. <3

Gashu got Brewster. I had no doubts about it. True gentlemen. They are the same person.

Rio Ranger got Marshal. I also don't have any reason for this choice. I just saw Rio in Marshal, so chose him. B)

Meister got Wilbur. My reason for this was really simple as well. I just thought Wilbur is a good choice for him. <3

Midori got Redd. My beautiful, manipulative, cunning boys. <3 Midori for sure would be Redd in ACNH, selling fake arts.

Transmaru Ranmaru got Cashmere. Please ignore the fact that Cashmere is female. Or don't, because we support trans Ranmaru in this household. 💅

Anzu got Rosie. Rosie gave me Anzu's vibe, so I went with this choice. <3

Mai got Tangy. My peppy girls. <3 When I first saw Mai while playing YTTD, I called her a waffle, so food related character is a perfect choice for her. >:3

Hinako got Queenie. Queenie's colours, eyes and hair resembled Hinako. I'm glad that it was my final decision. B)

Kurumada got Rasher. They both look so similarly. They're both cranky. ✨ I think Rasher was a nice choice for Kurumada.

Hayasaka got T-Bone. They both look like businessmen, the colours are also perfect. I truly believe T-Bone is just Hayasaka in ACNH.

I was trying to choose characters that are at least similar from personality and looks, but it was not always possible. I still had fun doing this, so I'm sharing this little project of mine. I wasn't able to say much about some of them because I just had a feeling about certain characters, and that's why I wasn't able to give arguments for some. But well, it was just how I felt and I'm sure some of you would choose someone completely different. And I'll be happy to hear your opinions about it. <3

Kaname Yamashiro

-yo her parents are also HELLA neglectful. Like extremely, they're not around

-she's rich. right?

-not to be stereotypical but probably they're a typical portrayal of rich parents where they spoil Kaname with a lot of material items and pampered living but not much love or attention

-but unlike Rei, Kaname doesn't really give a shit that they're not around, subconsciously she does but she's buried the feeling so deep that she doesn't even register it. In fact she's sees them being away as a good think because she can do whatever she wants without consequence

-they spoiled her and never discipline her and when they do show up they're very lighthearted. They're both quite similar to her personality. They're rich so they go out and have fun in between working

-her parents are a super lovey-dovey hetero couple and whenever Kaname sees them on their lovey dovery bullshit she thinks it's disgusting. It's kind of like a, they're so wrapped up in each other that they don't pay any attention to their child, kind of situation.

-Because of that she never wants to fall in love with someone like that which is why she switches relationships so frequently and strings Nakatani along. She gets some sense of satisfaction from just stopping the romance from happening. This is all subconscious

-she doesn't have any siblings either. So she's got the house all to herself

-in all seriousness, she probably is quite lonely because of the lifelong neglect which is why she fills her life with social interactions but since she didn't get an example of being given affection at a young age she doesn't know how to really love them, only a superficial display of affection she saw in her parents between each other

Hinako Nakatani

-she's giving child of divorce ngl

-her parents divorced when she was younger. She got used to hearing loud yelling arguments and used to cry about it in her room a lot.

-she's comfortable with her unrequited situation with Kaname because due to that example she feels like relationships don't work out anyway. However she hopes that there can be which is why she's a hopeless romantic.

-she also holds very closely onto that relationship with Kaname and gets jealous easily because she's afraid of abandonment like what happened with her parents

-anyways, as for her relationship with her parents individually, she's a daddy's girl, she loves with her mom but gets along better with him

-her dad is kind of a girl dad and whenever she's with him he's very affectionate and spoils her and all that but he's around less than her mom.

-probably has a step mom she doesn't like or sumthin

-her mom on the other hand, she argues with her very often. Her mom nags her a lot and she's constantly arguing against it.

-While Yamashiro is rebellious because of her freedom, Nakatani is rebellious on purpose. Anything her mom nags her to do she just instantly wants to not do it

-subconsciously blames her mom more for the divorce than her dad but in all reality they were both probably equally at fault.

-her mom's personality is very similar to hers. Meanwhile her dad isn't at all.

-so there's this little factoid that says she has a younger brother. That makes A LOT of sense.

-she has a younger brother that relentlessly tries to annoy her which is why she's so easily annoyed and so angry about it. Her brother does lots of things to piss her off and she full on screams at him about it

-however despite their almost constant bickering they do have occasional bonding moments and she they do care about each other. She's quite protective of her brother, of anyone is ever rude to him or he does something dumb that could get him in danger she is fiercely protective and she wants him to grow up into a good person. This is where she gets her protective nature from that she displays.

-I'd say they would at least be somewhat close because of they had to experience they're parents fighting and divorce together

Ren Utsugi

-i think for sure she's adopted

-her biological family I headcanon may have been at least somewhat abusive or neglectful which would explain why she acts so much like a child now, maybe she didn't really get the chance when she was an actual kid. Also explains that picture of her that Akutami had where she looked unkempt and unhappy

-but again, that's a bold claim so don't mind it

-but I think she's living with adopted parents/a parent now and has been for at least a little while

-i think they're exceedingly sweet and goofy and caring which is where Utsugi gets it from.

- I have no clue how homophobic adoption centres are in Japan so logistically maybe not but I can see Utsugi having two moms or something like that.

-i don't think she has any siblings but I think she wants them. This is why she makes so many friends. To make up for that and also to make up for the lack of connection she had as a kid too

-gets a long with her new family really well, they have movie and game nights and fun stuff like that.

-she doesn't like to talk about her past and just hopes to move on from it.

-had to take care of herself a lot as a kid and had really bad health too, she's healing from that too

Matsuri Fuji

-so she's said I think at least a couple times that she lives at/around a shrine/temple with her family

-i feel like she has a pretty big family that are quite religious and put effort into being hard working and have very specific rigid beliefs about what it means to be a good person which Fuji follows commitedly.

-whether her parents are around much or not, I can see Fuji having a very close relationship with her Grandma.

-She has the job of taking care of her often which is where she gets her sense of responsibility from and her Grandma has always given her a lot of advice and always told her to be a good person.

-her grandma is always the first person she goes to for advice because she's a good balance of bluntly honest and kind/understanding and she gives the best advice and comfort.

-her family is considered weird and has very specific beliefs. Fuji has bad social skills and life awareness because she was quite sheltered growing up. Her parents/family have always kept her very close, mostly at home, maybe used to be homeschooled, they kept her close and inflicted their beliefs on her and have always been very nosey in her life. She's had helicopter parents/family.

-they've loosened up as she's gotten older but her parents always worried about her from a young age and worried about her capabilities which is why Fuji tries so hard to prove herself

-and to be clear her family (except her sister) is very sweet and very loving and they always have been so certainly no complaints there. Fuji is very confident that she'll always be able to rely on them when she needs anything

-there's that flashback where Fuji had her sister telling her to fuck off basically when she tried to get her attention so let me get into that

-she has an older sister that resents the family's weirdness, she's considered the rebel of the family because she's trying to stick with what's considered normal since she's sick of being judged by people

-Matsuri is the opposite and very obedient towards her families rigid beliefs of goodness and so her sister doesn't get along with her because of it, sees her as the favourite child because she's like that

-So suffice to say Matsuri doesn't have a close relationship with her sister. Their few interactions are usually her sister telling her to fuck or stop being weird, which is part of what prompts Matsuri's insecurity within herself.

-Matsuri really wants to be close to her sister and has tried many a time to repair their relationship but it hasn't worked out.

-She wishes they were close and doesn't wanna give up all together but she's not weird about it like Tsubaki is and as she gets older she's trying to just give her space

-still rigidly follows her family's wants for her and beliefs, she loves and admires them all very much (most of all her Grandma) and she wants to always be loyal to them but parts of her wish they hadn't sheltered her so much so that she had a broader array of skills and didn't feel insecure from people judging her. Thankfully a lot of the time she doesn't even notice people are judging her, but that's also a skill she lost being sheltered.

see, now you joke about this, but i do consider it an interesting possibility to think of " what if sei survived " -- there are many directions this could go!

BOTH SURVIVE THE ASSASSIN'S TRIAL:

ah, the classic hunger games stall. unfortunately, i do think even if they had managed this (assuming asunaro would pick them up rather than letting one of them starve to death and then taking the other, in critical condition, and fixing them up again as the victor), that asunaro would instead demand a duel between the two of them upon being brought back.

if they needed stronger reason to facilitate the murder, they would likely give both a poison they haven't yet had the chance to adapt to. it is in this sense that killing would be a mercy: something that kai, for all his airs, would concede to under certain circumstances, and which i expect sei would follow through on promptly.

unfortunately, this scenario is a dead end for that reason. only one will survive, so let's see:

SEI TAKES KAI'S MISSION:

i've seen a few people regard this scenario, but i must admit i find it incredibly unlikely. sei is a good assassin; kai isn't, even though he's survived as long as he has. i've written this into practically all of my interpretations of kai, but the only way he survived those years without killing people was by learning to fake their deaths. he is the child of a renowned scientist, after all, and trained on the human body's limitations.

in any case: i cannot see sei being punished to the point he'd be outcast (without a proper expulsion) as kai was. and even if he was punished, it would not be framed in as much secrecy.

kai was sentenced to domestic life because it would be torturous and inhibit him due to the apparent facade of the chidouins being an unfortunate civilian family destined to suffer at the hands of asunaro, and more importantly, him. if sei was sent to guard them, as the victor of the assassin's trial, it would likely be in explicit terms of what would be expected of him -- because what would he do, really, knowing that mr. chidouin is the 'meister' of the death game? he's seen what happens when people rebel against asunaro. he's seen how hopeless it is. kai died for it. sara is just piteous.

SEI ENTERS THE DEATH GAME:

now, even with the above, i'm not ignoring the idea of sei entering the death game regardless. it's interesting to me seeing just how much focus is placed upon the mirrors of the satous & chidouins. prior to the mini-episode (though this can still work imo), i was under the impression that gashu was assigned as mr. chidouin's aide & that kai was mandated as sara's right hand specifically.

with this in mind, it's not out of the question that sei could be placed in a similar position to hinako: the heir for the family you've been assigned has been compromised, thus you will fit that role. a literal human shield, i expect... and sei would have no room to protest, because they'd kill him anyway, and if not him, then this young & innocent girl... who he sees much of himself in. they'd never call themselves hopeful, but asunaro takes what little they had and breaks it. thoroughly.

SEI STOPS THE DEATH GAME:

and of course, as for your actual joke here, i do think it'd be interesting to consider sei feeling like he's at the end of his life. i expect everyone involved with the death game to some extent was given a certain date by which they were expected to report back to asunaro to commence & honor its start -- the meaning of this, of course, being that there would be no outside influence.

(most notably, as hazard/corvidcrowned pointed out to me long ago and has made me Sickly over ever since, the floormasters are falling apart just the same... it's confidential. throw everything you have at this. you'll be bound for life, if you even manage to live)

while kai's plan failed (likely an attempt to extract the chidouins, or at least sara, with the program he curated that would fundamentally disable asunaro's security/monitoring) due to mr. chidouin's connections to it, which he could not have anticipated at all.

but sei... now that is interesting. he'd likely earn a nice reputation in this scenario, in hand with asunaro's trust. he'd have much more information at his fingertips as to what the death game entails, who the participants are, where they are... i truly think that part of asunaro's attempts to hold him down after the assassin's trial would simply be to isolate him.

see, kai was already alone. he had no interest in mingling with civilians, as that was a place he didn't belong and still struggles to feel belonging with. however, he is loyal and immensely dedicated to his ideals regardless of whether or not they align with asunaro. of course asunaro would then choose to break him down by expelling him from the darkness which he began to be comfortable in, forcing him to interact with and be indebted to civilians -- with nothing else to do, but allow them to guide him. a puppet on strings. poor, little marionette.

but sei needs people around him. you've surely read over his introduction to the satous more than even i have, and can gleam this much. even if he's reluctant to admit as much, it is this which grounds him and would... let him hope that there's more than just these skills he's been forced to hone over the years. as such, being introduced to the existence of these participants who would suffer a similar fate could be a dangerous thing. perhaps he'll take a look at the kizuchis since he's in the area, he's curious, and perhaps it'd hit too close. and it becomes harder to deperson these candidates as he would his usual targets -- not that he ever wanted to, but. well. the trauma of it all combined with asunaro's coping suggestions cannot be healthy in the least.

i won't get into much more detail, as this is long enough, but i'm sure you can see what i'm getting at... admittedly, this is reaching a similar route to 'deliver us from evil', but regardless: sei would have more resources at his disposal than kai ever would. if he dared to believe in himself again, believed he could make a change, believed it wasn't foolish to hope... maybe he could really do much more than kai did. stage a betrayal they'd never expect, for they thought they'd broken him down into a husk not unlike gashu.

Is this what Happiness is?

- hey so I haven't seen an interpretation of the bar scenes in Half that I fully agree with, so I wanted to throw my own two cents out there into the void and pray that it makes sense !!!

so, in the bar scenes in Half we see what I interpret as a hangout with old friends (or, hangout with old friend + his wife.) These scenes used to be the biggest piece of evidence for the cheater theory, but now that that's been debunked by the man himself, I have a new way of looking at them

~ before I go any further, I just wanted to say that I'll be calling the brown-haired woman whiskey for simplicity's sake

In this scene, Kazui turns to look at Whiskey, saying the lyrics:

"laughing together, side by side, this distance in our relationship is misleading me, is this what happiness is?"

With my guess (cuz that's really what it is there's no evidence for it) that Whiskey is the Bartender's wife i think this scene is Kazui being conflicted with what he's been told is true, that marrying Hinako is "true love", versus what he feels is true, that marrying Hinako has brought distance into their relationship.

He looks at Whiskey, a woman happily married, and wonders why his relationship with Hinako isn't like that.

in this post he points out that Hinako and Kazui's rings are silver in Cat, not gold like they were in Half, yet Bartender's ring colour stays the same.

For the sake of this writing I'm going to go with the first meaning they put out, that Bartender's ring is gold because his marriage is genuine.

But wait!! I hear you ask. This is Half and Kazui's ring is still gold in Half!! EXACTLY MY FRIEND!!

Kazui's ring IS still gold in Half because at the time of these scenes he's still fooling himself that this relationship is good, that he will eventually garner real romantic feelings for Hianko.

Remember this lyric that plays during the Whiskey -> Hinako scene. You know what other scene in Half this lyric reminds me of?

He's beginning to doubt if what he believes is true, he's beginning to believe the feelings telling him something's wrong (and remember, the scene right after this one is when he confesses (?) his secret to Hinako) ARE infact true, and that maybe the logic he's been following for so long has a couple holes in it.

I think these scenes are meant to show Kazui gradually realising that his relationship with Hinako will not work out. It just won't, no matter how hard he tries.

He's able to laugh together and talk with Whiskey because she's his friend, yet he can't do the same with his own wife? Even though, according to his gold ring, their relationship is supposed to be real and true and genuine?
