Sakamoto Days 199!!!

They're so dumb and in sinc already. True father and son duo.

This page and the following panel. What does it all mean? That the JAA was already after Ando when Shin was a baby (and him?), before Ando dropped him of with Asakura? Although Shin does say that Ando is saying bullshit, we don't know what Shin means with that since we don't actually got to see what Ando was thinking about. (Except for trying to flee the country, which is already Andos plan.)

I do gotta add a theory I've had for a bit now. Which is that Shin was actually born with the powers, and that Asakuras chemistry simply activated them earlier than they would have otherwise. Don't know how likely that is though.

Ando points out the hypocrisy in telling someone who you can't kill while being an Assasin. Which is honestly fair, and Sakamoto doesn't even fight it, just asks where the bomb is. (And promptly goes to a straight attack.) And Shin does seem to know where the bomb is, like Taro points out later in the chap. Except maybe, could it be, that the bomb is just a bluff? Or Ando already figured out/knows that Shin can read minds after his reaction before (previous pic) and said something else? No idea. Again we are once not shown what Shin can read in Andos mind. Probably for a more emotional scene later, but who knows.

Sunglasses, Ikari, from the previous chapter attacks (with an anchor, of course, we are on a boat. Should have expected an anchor as a weapon, lmao.) And Taros instinct is already to just pick up Shin and run of with him in his arm. The fatherly instincts in him are to strong.

Meanwhile Shins trauma from being abandoned at a young age without any answers shines through strong. With, for now, the set believe that blood relation goes over anything. I can't tell if the panel of Taro is only him noticing Ikaris next attack, or if he's already thinking about what Shin is saying here. Never the less. He still immediately protects Shin, who at this point isn't a bystander, but still a kid and (for Taro at least) one that has got nothing to do with the job.

ALSO IKARI IS A CREEP. EWWWWW. GET AWAY FROM THE CHILD.

And while Taro is like constantly making sure that Shin doesn't die in all that chaos, ever since he meeting him, Ikari has no fucking issue to strangle (and assault because omg) a child. Just from the start of this flashback it's clear that Taro never liked killing when it wasn't neccesary, if at all. He saved him at first by just saying he would get rid of him infront of the thugs. He then keeps saving him over and over, even though Shin is a little shit and sends the shop owners after him. Telling him to either stay away from trouble in his way, "I'll be right back" - "don't get thrown overboard again" - from last chapter. (Even asking him if he's okay) I just really like this, seeing how despite the killing itself Taro always had something genuinly nice at him. Killing is work for him, nothing more. Not harming innocent bystanders isn't just a rule to follow, but something he deems right. Keeping a child safe in a fight, asking him "What's wrong?" and "you okay?" when the child looks sick? Even though he has obviously no idea how to act with a (traumatized) child?Just a natural instinct.

Between all that he even decides to apologise to Shin because he can't understand his feelings. He doesn't understand Shins internal struggles. However he's not just bursting out anymore that he's gonna kill Shins dad, because it made Shin upset before, and instead says that he's gonna keep the enemy busy and for Shin to escape. Again, telling him to get to safety. And In a way even telling him to just stay away from the underworld I think.

So in summary. Sakamoto Taro is an assassin here, killing is his job. But he so obviously believes that innocence exists. That other people are innocent. He also believes that you shouldn't harm children (after all children are supposed to be the most innocent). But Taro also doesn't see himself to ever be part of that. At least not yet I think.

Nope, only Romeo and Subaru have expressions labeled "yandere"! But some characters have yandere adjacent expressions like varying degrees of madness, and several characters have expressions without their eye highlights which really emphasizes some extremity. . . .

Sho literally does not have an expression to fit this, in name or otherwise.

Haru also doesn't really have a good one for this, so have the opposite! This expression is more like him at the mercy of a yandere i.e. towa lmao - toraware (meaning: "captive"); you can also have Peekaboo - ookuchi (meaning: "mouth open wide")

Towa - ikari (meaning: "fury")

we've seen this one in game at least. if you're an anomaly and you see him making this face. . .reconsider what you're doing. maybe get on the floor and grovel and hope for your life. maybe if you're not an anomaly too.

he looks so smug. . .like he thinks it's funny we've been belittling him all this time, figuring he's useless. . . .

Taiga - choshi (meaning: probably from "choushikoku" meaning "to be caught up in the moment" "to be carried away" "to get cocky")

he's used this one in the game, but i still love it. i love that he's crazy haha

Romeo - yandere

I've shown this one before. It's still amazing. He's still giddy and disgustingly in love. . . . This is the face he makes behind the above Taiga's back once he's finished brutalizing someone who was bothering him. and maybe the face he makes in his head when he sees Kaito.

Ritsu also does not have any extreme expressions lmao

Subaru - yandere

it doesn't feel very yandere until you consider that Subaru would be stressed out by his own extreme adoration. he'd feel bad about his own yandere feelings, this is an accurate expression if you think about it!

Haku - warui (meaning: bad; evil)

this is the "you really put too much faith in me. it was sweet. but stupid." face we'll probably be getting at the end when he's revealed to be the spy and all that. in the meantime, i'd like him to step on someone's neck with this face. please and thank you.

Zenji also doesn't have a fittingly crazy expression.

Edward - sadist

he uses this one in the story i believe, but. . .still. he says he has no interest in hurting humans because their lives are already so short but like. . .what if. . . .

Rui doesn't have a fitting expression

Lyca doesn't have one either. . .but he does have "shitadashi" meaning "tongue out" so I'll show you that because it's a fun one.

I've been watching Evangelion for the first time since my teens- which of the sequels/spinoffs/alternate endings would you say are worthwhile beyond the original show?

Hm, this is a good question! The answer is going to be very individual because most of the Evangelion additional content is varying degrees of wildly different from the original show? So it is really a question of "what genres do you like". And your tolerance for bullshit, because most of them aren't good.

I will assume End of Eva is just default-included in "the original show"? Just in case, if not obviously watch that. Otherwise I do think Sadamoto's manga adaptation is quite good - it is of course the "same" story, but tonally different enough to be fun while not so different that any Eva fan will probably get something out of it. Those are the "core" products one can start with.

Beyond that...

Where do you even start, you know?

Okay, so I think most people will say that none of the "big" spinoffs are like good-good. Your actual answer is probably none of them. But if you do wanna dig in, I think Girlfriend of Steel is a VN with a contained, coherent story that matches the tone of the original show pretty well? Sort of an alt-universe telling with a new girl in the mix who is essentially girl-Shinji (yeah, I know, isn't Shinji girl-Shinji? Life/Sadamoto finds a way):

The game is choppy in its presentation and ofc quite tropey, but it has heart, and gets more serious as it goes on.

I'm not gonna sit here and tell you that the shonen comedy manga Shinji Ikari Raising Project is, like, worth reading? But some people like it, I am sure. Gendo does Punch An Angel which kinda fucks:

Honestly I thought Campus Apocalypse was pretty neat? Alas the scans online are dial-up tier on quality, but if the idea of "Evangelion: but it is a noir school academy thriller" appeals to you it very much is that. And there is something inevitable to their being a version of Eva where they wield the Lance of Longinus like a person-sized polearm and the angels are hot goth guys:

Okay so I really like Princess Maker? Which Gainax made by the way, that is often forgotten - pre-Eva while Gainax's animation division was burning cash their video game side hustle kept the lights on. So Gainax took advantage of the synergy and made the Ayanami Raising Project - and Asuka Supplement Project to boot! Which is an incredibly cheap knock-off where you take our two main girls and plan out their days and grow their stats and abuse your inexplicable position of power over them to date them and dress them up in adorable outfits which is all I have ever really wanted:

There are one million more of these things, I haven't read/watched/played most of them - when it comes to Eva you kinda just gotta grab one at random and dive in, see what happens. Why I Believe John Lennon is Asuka Langley

Hello everyone! I originally created a thread about this over on Twitter, though I also want to post it here just because. I want to preface this by saying while this is mostly a joke, I still want to point out the similarities between the two. I find that both John and Asuka are very complex people/characters that happen to heavily relate to each other. Obvious spoilers for Neon Genesis Evangelion. TW FOR TOPICS SUCH AS SUICIDE AND DEATH.

CHILDHOOD TRAUMA

Both John and Asuka lost their mothers from a young age, with Asuka losing her mother at 4 and John losing his mother just before his 18th birthday. It’s known that John’s mother wasn’t exactly mentally stable as Mimi, John’s aunt, was given custody of him. Similarly to John’s mother, Asuka’s mom, Kyoko, was also mentally unstable. Kyoko lost her mind after surviving a failed experiment with Evangelion Unit-02. This experiment would also end up taking the life of Yui Ikari, Shinji’s mother (this is important info for later.) Kyoko ultimately committed suicide after losing her mind and her husband in the process. Though it is ambiguous how Asuka’s father felt towards her, he did indeed drive his daughter away by cheating on Kyoko while hospitalized. It’s also known that John’s father wasn’t very involved with him up until the height of Beatlemania. Both John and Asuka were never very close with their parents due to many different factors.

(It can also be argued that John and Asuka were both adopted, but Asuka being adopted was only canon in the manga. For the sake of this post, I’ll only mention canon events from the anime going forward.)

RELATIONSHIPS WITH LOVERS

John and Yoko will probably be the most recognized celebrity couple in the world. It’s also recognized that John had an Oedipus complex which was sometimes discussed. The same can be said for Asuka, considering the fact that she romantically latched onto Kaji, a 30 year old special inspector for NERV. Asuka does this to fill the void of a perfect father figure in her life, as well as filling the role of a lover. John mentions doing this with Yoko numerous times. John and Yoko would even go as far as calling each other mommy and daddy. Moving onto other romantic relationships, I will now discuss Shinji, Asuka, John, and Paul. Shinji and Asuka have this strange dynamic throughout the story of Evangelion. Asuka is secretly in love with Shinji (you can already see which direction this is headed in), though Shinji has a hard time reciprocating his feelings due to his own personal struggles. Asuka’s rudeness and constant bullying also confuses Shinji, leaving him to wonder what Asuka truly feels for him. In this scenario, Paul would be in the same boat as Shinji. Shinji and Paul both lost their mothers at a young age. Paul and John bonded over the loss of their mothers. In a way, this also happens with Shinji and Asuka. It’s easy to tell that Shinji is more drawn towards Asuka after she tells him that her stepmom isn’t her actual mother. John and Paul go on to have a rivalry as they grow older, which also happens to Asuka and Shinji, though their rivalry was highlighted since day one. This rivalry between the two characters progresses all the way to the finale of the series. You can say that Asuka finally accepts Shinji when she lifts her hand up to his cheek while he is brutally strangling her. This act is seen as her accepting him into her heart after everything that they’ve been through. John and Paul also reconcile towards the end of John’s life. In Evangelion, the world is quite literally destroyed at the end of the series when the two finally reconcile. I’m not gonna be cheesy and say the same for John and Paul, but yeah. MOVING ON NOW.

OTHER FACTORS

John and Asuka have a habit of trying to appear more “mature” than they truly are. Asuka constantly boasts about being the best and most mature out of everyone. Same can be said for John. We also see this with his marriage to Cynthia Powell, John’s first wife. In my eyes, John’s first marriage was a rush to maturity considering the fact that he was only 21. I could say the same for John having a child with Cynthia at such a young age as well. John and Asuka, though trying to seem mature, are ultimately vulnerable people who tend to regress. Asuka acts like a young, lovestruck girl with Kaji. John acted in a similar fashion with Yoko. Asuka and John had massive egos. What else is there to say, really?

FINAL SUMMARY AND A FUN FACT

This is gonna be a quick one that basically ties together the points of my threads.

John and Asuka were seriously neglected as children which had a massive impact on their social development, as well as behavior.

Both had large egos, yet low self esteem.

The only fun fact about the two I have is that they both know German and Japanese.

FINALLY, A REAL OPPONENT. Ladies and gentlemen, she is finished. One of the strongest darkners ever made, is here to see how strong Kris REALLY is. Shady, mysterious, and most of all, EDGY. I present to you; Shikari.

She was once the Emperor's favorite hitman. Considered by the whole dark world to be stronger than the emperor himself. She never missed target, she never lost a fight. Yet still, she kept a certain tenderness in her heart for all of the citizens.

One day, a strange man arrived to the dark world. In his paranoia, the Emperor ordered Shikari to get rid of this foreigner. Shikari followed his orders, and immediatly started looking for the man.

When she found him, she instantly tried to kill him. No point in making a conversation. But.. for some reason... She couldn't lift her katana from the ground. Her legs and arms were shaking. She couldn't move. Was this... Fear? But how? She never lost a fight, she never doubted, she was always the STRONGEST one... Wasn't she?. To top it all, the man kept smiling the whole time, as if he was mocking her. After that the man got closer to her and handed her a strange crystal, said it was a gift for trying so hard. Was he making fun of her?

Shikari wasn't gonna take it. Out of rage, she grabbed the crystal and SMASHED it to the ground... A grave mistake. The essence of the crystal enveloped her in darkness, and in it, she saw EVERYTHING. The horrible fat of the world, and the truth of her reality, ALL AT ONCE. She passed out, and the man dissapeared. Was HE looking for HER this whole time?

Eventually, the Emperor's guard found her lying on the ground, and tried to help her. But something was wrong with her. She woke up and attacked everyone on the place, while saying stuff that didn't make sense. Somehow, the emperor managed to capture her. Seeing her in this state, he realize she was a GRAVE DANGER for his entire empire. And so she was exiled to the darkweb, and her katana retrieved from her, with no way of coming back.

In there, she keeps training herself beyond her own limits. She has to be stronger, she NEEDS to be stronger. Or everything she's done... Will be for nothing. Woe to the next prisoner who is sent with HER.

Phew, that was a LONG one, eh?

Anyways, so, have you heard about this girl "Shikari"? She's such a GAL! (Do NOT say that to her in her face, she WILL break yours).

As said in the image, Shikari is inspired in those old EDGY flash/newground games from the 2000's, so yeah, i decided to make a real shady, mysterious, and OVERLY DRAMATIC character for this one.

Her design didn't take that much thought, i decided to give her thos cool white mask eyes and make her look like she is ALWAYS angry, even if she's not. And i tried to give her that "cool stickman" body type, that's why she's tall (also to be more intimidating). Btw she does have two arms, you just can't see the other one the 90% of the time due to dramatic effect.

The name SHIKARI is combination of the word: Shi (Death) and Ikari (Wrath). Very edgy right? And on the nose for people who know japanese, probably.

After getting her SHIFANG back. Shikari finally decides to unleash her full power on you. She didn't need the katana to do that, she just wanted it back. May god have mercy on you, because she won't.

And finally, her battle theme. This might be one of the best ones i've ever done. What do you think?

I already did but! considering I'm changing around the timeline again because I realized some stuff didn't make sense (like why is Gato there during Wishmaker, he's gone at that time lol) this is more of a ramble than an actual coherent post sorry

Stoneheart, Akuma!Juleka (still no name lol), Reverser, Bubbler, and Stormy Weather happen in that order. I don't think I'm gonna change this because this has been the same in almost every version of the timeline I have made so far.

I also have some plans for Befana, Ikari Gozen, Syren, Pharaoh, Collector, "Frozer", and whatever Dark Cupid's name will be. I am like 95% sure these will appear (because they're important, a new miraculous appears in 3, technically 4, of these and I also just like angst lol by that I mean there's angst in 2 of these xd)

I want to include Lady Wifi, Style Queen, Wishmaker, Gigantitan, Vanisher, Mr Pigeon, Copycat/Pixelator (I won't do them separately, only one of those), Gamer (I just think it would be really funny if Stephan beat Max at a game he's never played (I also figured out how it can make sense!)), Sandboy (literally the akuma that made this au, the ending is actually more important to me than the actual akuma lol).

I also have an urge to make Prime Queen happen but that would just be me being really fucking petty so I don't think I'll do it. it would be purely self-indulgent cringe

I'm unsure (because of previous importance or an interesting concept that's too good to abandon or I just haven't thought of it much further) about Anansi, Rogercop, Sapotis, Zombizou, Evilustrator, Princess Fragrance, Horrificator, Reflekta, Silencer, Puppeteer, Animan, Mime, Weredad, Lies, and Kwamibuster.

Definitely (or I'm not planning it) won't happen and why:

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death and Rebirth

This one's gonna be pretty quick, but I wanted to get it out of the way before I tackled End of Evangelion.

All right, so the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series (1995-1996) was a success, and there was also a strong fan demand for a different ending. I'm pretty sure fans thought the original ending in Episodes 25 and 26 was an incoherent mess, but maybe they were more supportive about it. Anyway, those two factors led to the release of the first NGE movie, Death and Rebirth, in March 1997.

The movie is actually two smaller movies and both of them are kind of bullshit. The first half, Death, is just a trumped up clip show, which is pretty rich considering how much footage they already recycled making Episodes 14, 25, and 26. The second half, Rebirth is actually all-new material that serves as an alternate ending, but only the first 25 minutes' worth of that ending. This 25 minute segment ends on a cliffhanger, and it would air again, along with the conclusion, in End of Evangelion, released in July 1997.

So really, Death and Rebirth was just an extended preview of End of Evangelion. A fan would have gone to the theater for D&R in March, and gotten a recap of the TV series, followed by the opening third of EoE. That would presumably whet the fans' appetite to come back in four months to see EoE in its entirety.

So in 1997, this was probably a cool idea. By that time, NGE had been off the air for about a full year, and fans might have appreciated a highlight reel of all the big moments from the series before diving into the next thing. And seeing 25 minutes of a new episode doesn't sound like such a bad deal either.

But, it's 2024, and from my vantage this just comes across like a cheap stunt. It looks a lot like End of Evangelion was the movie they wanted to make all along, but they couldn't get it finished in time, so they slapped together what they had and padded it out with old clips. Then they released End of Evangelion as they had originally intended, but this way they got their fans to pay twice for that same 25 minutes of footage.

Any way you slice it, there's not much of value in Death and Rebirth. The first portion is just clips from the TV series, and the second portion is just the first portion of End of Evangelion. What does that leave?

Well, a little. I think this "found footage" clip from Misato's dad's lab is new? I could be wrong. There's not much to it. You hear people talking about stuff and then everyone gets upset because Adam is awakening or something, and then Second Impact happens.

There's also a bit with Kaji and Asuka talking while they're en route to Japan. Kaji tells her that one of the other Eva pilots is a boy, but she doesn't care about boys her own age, all she wants is Kaji.

There's a framing sequence where the Eva pilots each show up to the empty theater from Episodes 25 and 26, and they prepare to play classical music. Shinji's on cello, and I can barely tell what the others are even doing. It's all meaningless filler disguised as some sort of powerful, meaningful thing.

I think this is new footage of Unit 00 removing the Lance of Longinus from Adam Lilith's body. When the lance comes out, the bottom half of Lilith expands and grows into a pair of humanoid legs, as opposed to the bulbous mass of many teeny legs.

Maybe this was in the TV episode, but I feel like I would have remembered seeing this before.

Also new, maybe? This scene of Clownshoes talking to Yui Ikari and baby Shinji. He isn't keen on SEELE and their predicted scenario of Third Impact happening in the next ten years. Yui's a member of SEELE, and she assures him that they're just trying to ensure that Third Impact happens in a way that humanity will survive and be prepared for. Clownshoes also says that he basically got an offer he can't refuse from SEELE, which is why he's reluctantly helping them. And mybe this was in Episode 21, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't because I remember wondering when and how Clownshoes joined up and being irritated that a scene like this didn't exist to spell it out.

Oh, here's that suitcase with the embryonic Angel in it, remember that? Gendo called it "Adam" when Kaji delivered it, and I didn't understand this. Then they called the big white angel on the cross "Adam", except it turned out to be Lilith. Well, what they did was they shrank Adam down into embryo form so he'd be easier to move around. This also had the benefit of keeping him hidden when the other Angels attacked NERV in search of him. We found out Lilith was kept on the cross as sort of a decoy, but where was the real Adam, then?

Uh, in this guy's hand? I guess? They never show whose hand this is, but it just occurred to me that Gendo always wears gloves, and there were a couple of battles in the TV show where things were looking pretty dicey and he got up to leave his command post. Maybe he was trying to keep Adam away from the intruding Angel during those moments.

We also get a clip of Kaji greeting whoever shot him, but instead of the gunshot we hear a slap, and then Shinji telling Asuka that Kaji is gone. She refuses to believe it.

After that, things pretty much wrap up with the final battle against the 17th Angel. That segment is basically a quick rundown of Episode 24, but the stuff before that is a jumbled collage. I think they tried to organize it thematically. A bunch of Shinji stuff, then Asuka moments, then Rei moments, and so on. When I first learned about this movie, I assumed the Death portion was like an abridged treatment of the TV show, but it really isn't. This would be a terrible way to introduce a new viewer to the franchise. All the big important story beats are included, but in a jumbled order, often with no context. It's designed for a fan to watch and go "Yeah, I remember when that happened."

Anyway, the kids wrap up their music practice and exit the stage. Whatever.

Then there's an intermission clock before the Rebirth feature starts. Cute. I made sure to take a screenshot of the clock on 4:20, because that's the weed number. Ha ha, can you imagine what it would be like if everyone in Evangelion was high? On weed? The NERV logo would be green, and instead of a maple leaf it would be a marajuana leaf, because that's the weed plant! And when they get in their entry plug, they would be full of bongwater, and it would be green from all the weed molecules in it. Instead of LCL fluid, they would call it "THC fluid", amirite? Also Shinji and Asuka would be a lot less upset all the time.

After that, Rebirth starts, but I'm not going to get into that here. We'll save it all for End of Evangelion, since the whole thing is supposed to be there. It might take me a little longer to write that up, but I'm sure it'll be ready this weekend. Doncha dare miss it!

Luck Runs Out Part 10

After filling Raph in on the basics of what Leo had been dealing with for the past few days they all headed out with Usagi. Leo opened a portal into the hidden city, following Usagi into the East ends shopping district. He stopped outside a shop waiting for everyone to catch up and gestured to the door, it had two yokai in suits blocking the way in. There was a large sign above the door in glittery lights that read, "La Ruicko's" Usagi looked back to everyone as he spoke, "This is one of my personal favorites, I expect you all to be on your best behavior, this is my treat after all, so please remember that as you are being fitted. I cannot express with words along how grateful I am to have you all in my life.. So I hope this does it some justice." He gave the yokai a glance and they bowed their heads opening the doors for him, "This way." He said, taking Leos hand and leading them all inside, it almost looked like in lobby of a fancy high end hotel.. A small frog yokai in a neat black suit waddled up to the group with a much much taller man walking behind him. It looked like a human, a very tall man with broad shoulders and dark skin. He had dark dreads that were tied back out of his face save for a few bright yellow ones on either side of his face. He was in a suit too, probably just to show that their sizes ranged and could fit even human disguises.. He glanced to the group, his eyes landing on Raphael for just a moment longer then the rest and there was a hint of a smile before he straightened his posture, leaning down and extending his hand for the frog to climb aboard. 

Once he was eye height with Usagi he gave a big smile, "Mr.Tomogui! It's so good to see you again! I so hope you've enjoyed your last purchase! What brings you in today hm? And with such a colorful group no less!" Usagi's expression didn't shift much, "Yes, we have an event this evening and I understand its a little short notice, but we need yukatas for everyone." The frog smirked a little giving a glance to the group, "You understand our fees for rush orders correct?" Usagi still kept his unamused expression, "I do. I was hoping not to spend over 30 but if it comes to more then so be it." Mikey tilted his head, "30 dollars?" The frog let out a loud, boisterous laugh, "Oh no, no no no, thirty hundred! Oh you're friends are so quaint and charming!" Usagi gave a little nod, "They are the few people I would consider to be like family to me." Everyone's jaws nearly hit the floor, Usagi was prepared to spend up to and even over three thousand dollars just for 7 outfits?? That'd be like 430 dollars per outfit- And I mean if they rounded that to 500 each that'd be like 3,500- Exactly how loaded was Usagi here?? And yes I did math for this joke because that's just how rich he is

"Excellent!!" The frog said with a clap of his cute little frog hands, "Right this way everyone! Mica here is my right hand man and will be assisting you all personally so go easy on him alright~" Gave a little wink and hopped off Micas hand, leading the group to one of the bigger rooms in the back, there was a small circular stage with a long curved couch on one side and three large mirrors on the other. "Go on now, have a seat, go on. I'll send Ikari right on over to assist you!" He waddled back outside the room and everyone hesitantly took a seat. Mica stood by the door quietly, I guess he was waiting for instructions or something, he really didn't seem that friendly or like he had much to say.. But he could also just be shy, it was indeed a mystery. After a moment a crane yokai, specifically a secretary bird, but they're pretty dang close to cranes so we're just gonna go with that. She came in wearing an intricate yukata that was a soft ocean blue, lined with a white and silver flower pattern, with a white obi tied around her waist and a darker blue kazari himo made with beads and what looked like gemstones that chimed with each step. And in contrast with her white feathers and black accents it looked incredible on her.. "Usagi-san," She said with a little smile, "I was hoping you would stop by again." Leo glanced over to him, getting a little jealous at the interaction but not saying anything since he knew Usagi didn't like anyone else like that. Usagi stood up and bowed his head a little, "Ikari-san, it's good to see you too. This is.." He gestured to Leo with a little smile, "My kareshi. Leonardo, and his family, Raphael, Donatello, Michelangelo, April and Casey. Please treat them as you would me." She nodded and glanced over to Mica. "Mica, take the three brothers with you and the pale one, I'll fit the rest." He nodded and looked over to Raph again, pulling one of the many curtains back for them to go into one of the conjoining rooms. They hesitantly got up and followed. Leo blushed a little hiding even more behind Usagi now that he had told her they were together, he wouldn't have minded much if he'd just said 'boyfriend' but the way it sounded when he spoke Japanese was just.. It hit different is all I can say.

Ikari stepped past Usagi and took Aprils hand, "You must be April, that is such a lovely name. One of new beginnings and positive change. For you, I see a pink base with white deutzia blossoms, with a light green obi and yellow tie. Disrobe behind the shoji, the divider." She pressed a panel on the wall and it lifted up revealing hundreds of different fabrics, she picked out the ones she'd thought about and grabbed a measuring tape from one of her pockets, tossing the rolls into a another compartment that'd reviled itself. April was still standing there, she'd gotten out of her jacket but seemed unsure about the rest. Ikari tilted her head to the side a bit confused if she'd had a misunderstanding, "Well? Come here, if you want them done in time we must go fast with this." She gently grabbed her arm leading her behind the divider, "Obviously I prefer you to keep undergarments on but to get good numbers clothes should be removed. Don't worry, I am well fed with my partner, I'm a professional after all dear" April sighed a bit and complied, "Y'know I've never been somewhere all fancy like this, didn't know this is how it went down, I mean I'm not complaining or nothin' just, y'know.." She nodded with a little chuckle as she took the measurements, "I do. There are smaller dressing rooms you will be using when the yukata is complete, I would not make a lady undress in front of her family or any dansei for that matter." April laughed a little at that, "Fair enough, and- I'm sorry if this sounds weird, I'm a human so I'm not all caught up on this but your feathers are so soft- Like- It is wild, do you use anything for it?"

"Rice water and aloe, I do not take offence. I was thinking something similar about you as well, it's not often I'm able to work with humans, or soft skin."

"Aww thank you, I use this amazing thing called Life FLO it's, so good- Next time we see each other I can bring you some!"

"I would like that very much, and I can arrange a container for you as well if you would like that."

"Uh yes!? Absolutely!"

Mica had been going through a similar process with the others, getting everyone's measurements and selecting fabrics he deemed acceptable for them, sorting each roll into their own compartment any questions the had Mica answered, it seemed he just wasn't a big talker, he was really nice despite that though. He was gentle and patient, and he even smiled at Mikey's jokes and listened to Donnie lecture him on the importance of his yukata being made from certain fabrics only with a specific list of colors he would all to be used, he just nodded and even let Donnie look through the selection to make sure he was content with everything before Mica took it out and put it with his things. He didn't talk much but he listened and answered anytime he was asked something which was nice, he couldn't tell if Mica was being polite because it was his job, or because maybe he was just a nice guy who looked intimidating. Raph was last, he had been a bit nervous anyway for, some reason... Totally not because whenever Micas piercing blue eyes met Raph's he felt his heart skip a beat, or knowing Mica was going to have his hands so close against him to measure him.. Totally not that- 

Raph didn't really have anything on today, save for the utility belt he always wore but he wasn't sure if that'd be a problem? Probably, he should be safe and take it off anyway and save them both the trouble.. He undid the belt and carefully removed it, hanging it over the dividers wall. Mikey popped behind the divider, since y'know, he didn't really respect privacy- "Hey Raphie, after this we should get food kay? Me an' Donnie wanna get boba tea!" Raph blushed a little, "Mikey-! Fine, we can see whats around here later just- Go sit back down-" Mikey smirked as he caught the expressions between the two, "Oh~ Well excuse me for interrupting~" He gave Raph a wink as if to say 'good luck' before heading back to the couch to gossip to the others. Raph let out a little sign and rolled his eyes. Mica just let out a soft chuckle, "You have an interesting family. Lift your arms please." Raph nodded and did as told, "Yeah you're tellin' me- Mikey's the youngest so he's.. Got a lot of energy heheh.." Mica nodded, gently sliding the tape down his arm, carful of his spikes and scars. "Its sweet, I used to have a younger sister who was very similar in personality. Personal space was a foreign concept to her hahah.. Oh- Sorry, I'm getting a bit side tracked here. Hold still." He wrapped his arms around Raph's waist passing the tape from on hand to the other and gently tugging as he pulled back. Mica read the numbers then glanced up to Raph, "May I ask how sharp your spikes are? And if you'd prefer to use something that wouldn't rip or if making openings would be better?" Raph was quiet for a moment his eyes stuck on Micas hands around his waist. "O-Oh! Right.. Well usually they rip through everything, My shell doesn't always but the ones on my shoulders almost always ruin my shirts.. Not sure what to do about it honestly.. They are kinda scary, maybe I should cover them up?" Mica gave a little shrug as he let go of the tape rolling it back up and writing the numbers down, "I don't think they're all that scary, I mean it's part of you, and you don't seem all that scary.." Raph blushed a little and smiled with a nervous chuckle, he'd never really been complimented before, well, by anyone other than his family at least, so he was at a loss for words. Mica set everything where it needed to be as Raph put his utility belt back on and joined everyone else, Mikey rushing to tease him about getting extra friendly with the staff. In each compartment the separate orders were placed, they each had a tag with the name and measurements of the person that it would be going to once finished. Those compartments were like mail shoots, being sent down to another level of the building all with the click of a button from the panel on the wall. It was an interesting system but it was very effective still. 

After everyone had their things picked and measured it was all sent off and Mica led the group back to the other room. They'd all finished as well and April and Ikari were sitting on one end of the couch talking and laughing about something, while Leo and Usagi were cuddled up on the other end, Leo had his phone out showing a video to Usagi. Mikey ran over and dog pilled on Leo, "We're gonna get boba! Cause Mica said it'd be a little bit before anything's ready so we have time to go get snacks!!" Leo rolled his eyes and nodded, "Sounds good, though someone should probably stay incase we take too long." Donnie nodded and raised his hand a little as if in a class like he needed permission to speak of be called upon. "I volunteer Raph. He doesn't like boba anyways so.." Mikey gently slapped the back of Donnie's head, "Remember Dee we cannot just volunteer him because he might not enjoy it in the same way. "Although~" He looked at Raph nervously sitting beside them, fumbling with his fingers and glancing to Mica who was talking with Ikari, probably taking more orders or something since she seemed to be in charge of this section. "I think he'd like to stay, him and that dude got this vibe goin' yknow?"

"Not really no, I don't. But that doesn't matter too much, because I also don't care, so..." Mikey got up and went over to Ikari gently tapping her shoulder to get her attention, much like a child tugging at the sleeve of an adult. "Excuuuse me miss, but would it be alright if our big brother stayed here to make sure we don't take too long? I'm sure you'd have a way to get a hold of Usagi but just in case we split up while shopping around it would really help y'know?" She stared at him for a moment, unconvinced that's why he wanted Raph to stay behind, considering Mica had just told her, very quietly mind you, that the big red guy over there kept staring at him like lost puppy.. This was most likely related to that. She didn't mind though, despite looking intimidating and having to keep a professional air about herself she always enjoyed Usagi's company and was fairly close to Mica as well, enough that she could do him a favor like this, just this once at least. She nodded at Mikey, "Of course, we have a lounge area for customers just upstairs, and I'm sure Mica would be happy to chaperone and keep him company till your things are ready." Mikey excitedly nodded, already hatching several plans to get his brother and this new guy to talk more and eventually have feelings for each other then eventually start dating and then eventually get married and THEN eventually have kids and THEN-

Okay we're getting side tracked here, in fact, in the time to took Mikey to overanalyze this moment Donnie had already pulled him away and out of the store, down the street and towards a building that was designed to look like an old tea house. There was a big wooden sign carved with the name "老虎茶" with the carvings burned into the wood to make them darker and stand out. Leo tilted his head a little trying to read it, "Ro.. kou.. cha? Old tiger tea??" Usagi chuckled a little and shook his head, "It's Chinese not Japanese love, Lǎohǔ Chá. The Tiger's Tea. You were very close though." They pushed the gate open and saw a smallish courtyard with tables and chairs spread out, then a small shop behind it all. There were plants along the walls and posters filling in any bare spots, mostly about promotions or events going on in the area. Some in English and Chinese, others in a yokai scribble none of the turtles knew enough to decipher. Usagi stopped at the counter and took a few of the paper menus, handing them out to everyone. "Oh yeah we've ordered from here before-" Leo said as he glanced between the menu and the one behind the counter. Usagi nodded, "Yeah, this place delivers so when I'm too lazy to walk all the way here or try to get a ride this way it's pretty convenient." Mikey gasped a little as he read the menu "Ohmigosh wait wait wait- Look! They have flavored boba!!" Everyone got their orders ready and gave them to the panda yokai behind the counter, he looked so bored with everything it was almost enough to bring the whole vibe down, till there was the sound of drumbs? Out front two yokai, one robin and one sparrow, started gently banging on the drum they each had, slow getting louder and building to a quicker more intense pace. A small group of passer byes came in to see what the commotion was about and several people rushed to take their seats. They all looked a bit confused but after a moment the drums stopped and a mantis yokai in a fancy robe came out, a slightly taller lioness was behind him, she looked nervous, almost scared.. 

"Ladies, gentlemen, assorted guests! Please take in the greatest honor of viewing Naiya's performance with us in our shop. She has been working under me for near 20 years now and will be having her final show tonight at the festival before heading off to better things. Although I am sad to see her go I think her new calling is much more fitting for someone like herself. Give her a hand everyone!" Most people clapped or even cheered for her, but she really didn't look too happy.. Mikey tilted his head a little, getting a really shady vibe from that guy, weird.. The mantis turned towards the girl and whispered something, swooshing his long sleeves away with a huff as he left. She was in the center of the courtyard, dressed in a bedlah with all the colors of a raging fire. Along with cuffs on her tail that jingled when she stepped, her mane hair had been put into braids and tied back with matching flowers stuck in the hair. The lights around got dim as she struck a pose, music fading into the room as a she took the long yellow and red silks off from around her waist. Mikeys eyes lit up as he recognized the slow first movements, he might not be into this kind of music, but as someone who loved dancing himself, there's no way he wouldn't recognize a Dunhuang dance! Weird to combine Chinese dance with Arab fashion but having her dress in a more aesthetic way to bring in customers is understandable. It was also pretty weird that she didn't look excited though, but there was a very brief glimpse Mikey got. When the long skirt was kicked up as she spun he could see bandages on her feet, ones that were clearly too tight and causing her pain, no to mention they didn't look new.. There was suddenly a spark of anger where the whimsy of this experience had once been. He had to find out more, there was no way he could just go about his day now that this girl was clearly not being treated well considering the weird emphasis the owner used and how distressed she looked before putting her stage face on...

3. on a scale of 1-10 how much do you enjoy incorporating romance into the average story?

It has its place, and I am guilty of slipping romance or at least shippy vibes into fics that I did not INTEND to be romantic. I also like writing it in general, even though I struggle with writing the physical aspects (kissing). so I'd say, probably like, a 7/10. which is surprising, because the majority of my fics are rated Gen.

actually I went and figured out that out of all my fics, 70% of them are rated gen which I think is a fun coincidence.

8. what’s your relationship with constructive criticism and feedback like? do you seek it out? how well do you take it?

If I ask for it, I would like it. I don't want it if I didn't ask for it. I may still read it and consider it, but I'm gonna be annoyed by it. Feedback in general? fine - but I do like more than just "I liked this", although I love those comments. when I'm looking for FEEDBACK though, I need more than that. I need to know all your thoughts.

9. in an ideal world where you’re already super successful and published, would you want to see a tv or movie adaptation of your work? why or why not?

If I'm involved, why not? I think the majority of my (imagined) works would work better as a series, though. We've seen how turning longer works into movies works - usually not very well. I want to see my ocs on the screen. (in my dream world it would be an animated show, especially the fantasy ones, but we can't have everything in this live action obsessed world.)

27. do you share rough drafts or do you wait until it’s all polished? And who do you share them with?

depends on how much thought I put into a fic. I'll usually at least scan through and reread fics before publishing, but if it's a fic I wrote in one sitting totally at random? I'll skim it and then post without thinking twice. Fics that I put more thought in, I'll go over at least a few times before publishing. I've only shared rough drafts a few times, and that's when I'm really unsure about the story for some reason and need someone to give it a scan and let me know their thoughts.

32. do characters influence your writing style?

oh definitely!! Every character is a little different so that changes how I write their perspective, so that automatically changes the voice I use when I'm writing.

35. tell us about a character who’s very different than you who you love a whole lot

Most characters I love a whole lot are very different from me lmao but the one who comes to mind most of all is probably Yataka from Arata the Legend. He's a very prim and proper man, very focused on etiquette and being a gentleman, he hates being touched, is obsessed with cleanliness, and also is a HUGE bitch, will bicker like a 5 year old with his best friend (neither of them would admit to being best friends and have one of THE MOST dynamics of all time), and has the capacity for extreme violence and absolutely unhinged behaviour. he also hates himself so much. I'm obsessed with him I love him so much.

51. share the synopsis of a story you work on that you haven’t published yet

Sersi gets harassed/assaulted and the team/whoever sees it are fiercely protective. (aka more Sersi whump and team dynamics.) (I'm still debating whether Ikaris should know or not because he may straight up kill the person.)

53.when writing, do you have an outline? and do you stick to it?

depends on how much I care about the details of the story, or how much I want to get it right. Especially if it's a longer fic, I want to plan as much as I can ahead of time. Or if it deals with more serious topics, I want to figure out how to deal with those ahead of time.

64. what is your favourite title for a fic you’ve read?

5 Times Where Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji Lose a Braincell and 1 Time Where They Lose Another on account of it being a perfect summary of the fic.

I cried pretty bad when I saw All of Us Strangers a couple weeks ago. Would recommend lol

Drew.......is my child.....

But no and I don't really plan on it. I do think I'd make a good mom tbh but I'm not gonna just run out and adopt a kid and be a single mom. MY mom could raise me herself but that wasn't a choice, and certainly not one I'd choose for myself either 😭

4. What sports do you play/have you played?

DDR is the closest thing I have lol I'm getting back into it this year! Finally busting in my metal pads and revisiting my many many games :)

1. What’s your favourite sims death? I normally just let my sims die of old age, but I definitely have some favorites. My favorite from TS4 is being Consuming by the Mother. And my favorite from TS3 is jellybean plant - mostly because I love the color of the jellybean ghost, haha!

2. Alpha CC or Maxis Match? Maxis Mix! I will use an Alpha hair if the edit I'm doing works better with that, but otherwise I only use MM hair, and a mix of Alpha and MM clothes.

3. Do you cheat when your sims gain weight? No. I like to make them lose weight naturally if I want them to, if not? They're gonna just be like me.

4. Do you use move objects? I have a mod that makes it so move objects is always on, so yeah.

5. Favorite mod? Oh gosh... I have a lot of mods I can't live without, but for modern gameplay I gotta say the LGBTQIA+ mod by Lumpinou has changed my life. I don't have to choose my sims' orientations and genders anymore! Finally!

6. First expansion/game/stuff pack you got? For TS4, the first pack I got was Get to Work.

7. Do you pronounce “live mode” like aLIVE or LIVing? aLIVE, but that's because I think of it like "we're going live," like for TV and such.

8. Who’s your favorite sim that you’ve made? I don't know if she's my absolute favorite, but one of my favorites is Ikari Karma, the founder I made for a RainbowSin legacy that I still haven't gotten around to:

14. Are you a builder or are you in it for the gameplay? Definitely in it for the gameplay. Occasionally, I LOVE building, but I have to be in the right mindset for it.

20. How has your “sim style” changed throughout your years of playing?  Oh for sure. My first TS4 sims are not very good looking, and now I like them quite a lot. Can't say they're unique because I have same face syndrome, but I like them and that's enough for me.

22. Who’s your favorite CC creator?  Ahh... that's so hard. For hair it's daylifesims, and for clothes it's Sifix.

23. How long have you had a simblr? Since early 2020 I think. I mean, I started posting sims stuff occasionally back in 2015, but I wouldn't consider myself a simblr until I started posting regularly.

24. How do you edit your pictures? Reshade + MS Paint or iPiccy. I'm not clever or rich enough for fancy programs.

25. What expansion/game/stuff pack do you want next? I think I want the Cool Kitchen Stuff next, because... ice cream.

Divinity concept 1

On todays episode of the rambles™️ (sleep deprived edition!!) I’m gonna go into detail on my concept for how divinity works in the story I’m “writing” (assuming I ever actually get to the point of writing it)

Why am i doing this you may ask yourself, that’s simple really,

1 I think it’s really cool, does anyone else think that? Probably not

2 I am very tired so this seems like a great idea, I have been awake since noon yesterday I just got done with an overnight shift and I’m stuck at my other job til noon so I’m also very bored

3 this helps me organize stuff and maybe I’ll actually keep up with it, I doubt it

4 if this is incoherent it’ll be really funny for me to read later so

Let’s get into it I spent way to much time doing that stupid intro

Rule one of divinity (idk if rule is the correct term for term for these, it don’t really matter)

All things divine stem from the original deity (name not decided/they may never have) at the first instant of the first second of the first eon when all of existence took its first breath the first deity in its first instant of existing split its own soul in three (technically two of them split again but saying it was three times sounds wayyyy better) the first piece became the twin gods Iliric and Ikari (the piece split in half, see) (and also after the battle with Zaratos their fragments split a few times each and those become the minor gods) who would be the great overseers of the world and it’s sculptors.

They are also the ones tasked with giving life its shape, which holds the second and smallest of the three fragments which split and became all souls of all living creatures (or at least the first ones + a couple million reserve ones the rest get the whole soul recycling thing(no im not elaborating on that rn))

The final and biggest piece became a seed which sprouted into the tree of life/magic (name a work in progress) whose branches control magic itself, each branch represents a type of magic and as it grows the type of magic becomes stronger, more complicated, and it can do more things in general this has also the adverse effect of if the branches are ever damaged/trimmed the magic weakens (this is seen during mukono and Draco’s fight when Mu attempts to burn the tree and time magic is greatly weakened for like 5000 years) it was responsible for distributing all magic to all beings with souls as well as the distribution of souls, however once the whole soul recycling thing got started the process got automated so the tree mostly manages magic however it does have the power to change the very foundations of magic and life (as seen when zarkos connects with it)

Worth noting is that the tree has a will of its own it just chooses not to really interfere at least until zarkos became one with it and his help and will moves the tree to action

Rule 2

This one’s a bit of a small one, more of a consequence really, all beings with a soul are in some way divine as all souls are fragments of one of the three fragments of the original deity, however all mortals dont have enough in them for it to matter at all (the only exceptions being, zarkos (by proxy of fusing with the tree), zaratos, the demon king (in the case of him and zaratos it’s cuz they absorb souls (or essence in zaratos’ case) of gods) and finally ayato technically tho he became like a full on god and technically it was only for a single moment but also technically that moment is stretched across all of time and space at once)

After reading all of this, I may sound like a bitch while saying it, but Chloé deserved what she got at the end of Revolution.

I don’t care that she ended up in the care of her so called « abuser », because the abandonment and emotional neglect Chloé went through because of Audrey doesn’t even compare to the hell that she put Marinette through for years and for nothing but her own entertainment. It wasn’t just about getting a scapegoat and stress relief for her own abandonment and mother issues (which is already a fucked up thing to do), Chloé made Marinette suffer because this is her definition of « fun », this is what brings joy to her life, tormenting and abusing an innocent person to the point of giving them lasting trauma and PTSD.

So yeah I don’t give a damn that Chloé is probably gonna suffer while staying with her mother, she pushed herself to that point, after many people gave her chances to chose another path for herself.

And I’m angry that the adults at Françoise Dupont weren’t brought to reflect more on how they were complicit to Marinette’s abuse and bullying, by not trying to look up more into the situation and give Marinette the benefit of the doubt like any responsible adult should, and by not trying to at least confort and protect Marinette behind Chloé’s back. And Marinette’s classmates are mostly guillible 14 years old who still lack some maturity and who are unfortunatelly are easilly led by their survival instinc to not go against the most popular student’s actions and words, which in these situations were unfortuntally Lila and Chloé.

And after reading this, I can better understand why Marinette thought bad of Kagami and beleived that the japanese girl was mocking her in Ikari Gozen, this what Marinette was used to for years. And I can understand why Marinette tends to rely more on herself than on others, because that’s what she was forced to do for years, not even able to count on her powerless parents.

It breaks my heart to know how much Marinette was failed by the adults and friends surrounding her, in the past and between season 1 and 5, to see how much she was left alone to suffer without being able to ask for help from the people that should have been able to ensure her safety. And it breaks my heart to once again realize how realistic Marinette’s situation was, how many people in this world are in the same situation as her and suffer because of a screwed up and incompetent school system and because of trash teenargers who are too pathetic to live without the need to hurt somoene.

I'm really surprised at how many people are taking away from Derision that the thing that ruined Marinette was Kim's prank. Because it wasn't about Kim - it was about Chloe.

The reason why we have so much flashback in this episode is to show that Chloe was making Marinette's life hell every day. Marinette is afraid to go to school because of Chloe. Marinette is nervous to open her locker because of Chloe. Marinette is late to class and gets in trouble because of Chloe, because Chloe is relentlessly harassing her.

This isn't even just implied. There's a whole conversation in which we see that many people like Marinette and she has friends she sits with at lunch because the cafeteria is the one place that Chloe isn't ruining her life, and Chloe immediately shows up and tells Marinette that the last safe space she has in the school isn't going to be safe anymore.

Then Chloe proves that she's right! She manipulated Kim to mess with Marinette outside of school, and Chloe is right there to take a picture. That's the point. That's why Marinette says that "above all I'll make sure they aren't friends with Chloe". She knows exactly what's happening because it's been happening to Marinette for years. Chloe chose Marinette as her favorite person to bully and did not let up on her for multiple years, and by the end of the last year of middle school it had reached the point that Marinette couldn't even count on her life outside of class to not be under Chloe's attack.

It's not paranoia either! Chloe has gotten people fired! Chloe worked specifically to give Marinette a reputation at the school of being a bad kid - one who doesn't come to class on time, who is clowning around and taking up everyone's attention, who is consistently blaming Chloe for all her problems as consistently as Chloe as bullying her. Socqueline is literally expelled for standing up to Chloe, which means every time they've threatened to expel Marinette for the same she's right to be afraid!

As an adult who has worked in the school system, this is painfully real. I saw so many kids who would consistently get in trouble despite the fact that they were the ones being bullied. It happened to me when I was a kid in middle school and high school because I was the weird kid with ADHD who couldn't sit still. It doesn't take much for a kid to get a reputation, and for teachers to spread around and share that some kids shouldn't ever be believed or listened to.

The episode explains that Marinette knows the system will not help her. Marinette has reached out for help and been called a liar for years. She's looked to her fellow students for help and found them all silent. She has been attacked by people with wealth and power because they don't think she's high class enough to be in their presence.

Why do people believe Lila? Why do people ignore Marinette? Why is she consistently paranoid about being hurt, about thinking other people are trying to deceive her? Why is Marinette terrified of relying on anyone other than herself?

Because Chloe bullied her for years, destroyed her school career, and convinced her first crush to pretend to be into her as a joke just so they could post it on social media. And that whole time, there was one person who stood up for her, and it ended with that person being expelled from school.

Trauma isn't always just one incident. Sometimes it's years of a pattern of behavior that informs the way you see the world, and it makes the people around you think that you're crazy and paranoid and that you're always seeing dangers that aren't there.

If you want to hate on the show or hate on Marinette, fine, but don't belittle how much this sucks. This is a real thing that real kids experience all the time. This is what bullying actually looks like, the consistent neverending drip of misery that convinces people that safety is an impossible dream.

It wasn't one bad proposal. It was a pattern of systemic abuse and neglect for years.

Neon Genesis Evangelion 23

"Heads up, NERV, becuase the 16th Angel is going to bring you down! That's right, you may have defeated all those other Angels, but I'm even stronger than all of them put together! I'm like a laser rope or something, and I've got creepy powers that let me burrow under people's skin or whatever. Oh, and those big guns your Evas use? Big deal! Those don't work on me! Now, take your best shot, humans, because it's the only chance you're gonna... wait."

"Kid, are you okay? Uh... don't you want to shoot at me or something?"

"Ma'am, I think the red one's having some kind of problem, maybe you could send out... Ma'am? Hello?"

"Uh... maybe I should come back tomorrow? Is that okay? Yeah, we'll pick this up some other time. Uh... sorry about... whatever just happened. Yeesh."

So Asuka is doing... well, I wouldn't call it "okay", but she's playing video games all day and spending every night at her friends' house. I mean, there's probably worse ways to cope with everything she's been through.

The SEELE group is mad at Gendo Ikari for several reasons, but most recently he lost the Lance of Longius during the most recent Angel battle, and they seem to think it's extremely important to their future plans. Gendo argues that the top priority of NERV is to destroy the Angels, and the Lance was the only way to do that. But they don't see it that way. During this little conference, another Angel is sighted over Tokyo-3, so Gendo excuses himself to deal with that. Meanwhile, SEELE openly worries that Gendo will betray them soon.

Let me try to summarize what I know about these guys. They seem to have something called the "Dead Sea Scrolls", which apparently allows them to predict certain future events. It occurred to me today that the name "Dead Sea Scrolls" may be a reference to the site of Second Impact, since Admiral Clownshoes once compared the waters of post-Impact Antarcica as a literal "dead sea".

Anyway, the SEELE plan apparently is their agenda to guide humanity beyond the dangers predicted in the Dead Sea Scrolls. The NERV Agency is charged with executing that plan, and SEELE also seems to believe that the Lance of Longius is critical to their success. They also think there should be at least eight Eva Units active.

But Gendo Ikari can barely keep three Evas in the field at the same time, and he seems to think that the only one he absolutely needs is Unit 01. So SEELE is mad about the destruction of Units 03 and 04, and the Lance being chucked into outer space, but Gendo Ikari considers this acceptable losses.

SEELE's dilemma is that they don't like or trust Gendo, but they have no alternative but to let him run the show. He's the only one who can, and yet they seem adamant that they understand the situation better than he does. Recently, they tried to turn Admiral Clownshoes against Gendo, but nothing came of it, so now they need another pawn to use against him. This turns out to be Ritsuko Akagi, so seems to be a better choice, since she actually knows more about what's going on.

So with the 16th Angel headed their way, the only one ready to fight it is Rei in Unit 00. Shinji is set up in Unit 01, but Gendo doesn't want to use him because no one is sure what might happen after that latest incident where Unit 01 went berserk and ate an Angel. As for Unit 02, Asuka suits up one more time to pilot it, but her sync rating has declined to the point where she literally can't operate the Eva anymore. Gendo orders it launched for use as a decoy, but it can't even step off the elevator when it reaches the surface. This doesn't help Asuka's morale at all.

Anyway, I think that's a really cool screenshot of Rei up there. I don't know, she just looks really sharp.

The Angel goes right for Rei, who grab it, but her gun is ineffective, and the Angel sends some sort of creepy veins into her Eva, and then into her own body.

Like Shinji from before, she experiences some sort of vision of another being, which appears in her form. Once again, I can't tell if this is the Angel or her own Eva. It offers to merge with her, and she refuses.

She snaps out of it and realizes that she was the one crying over her loneliness, and not the other she encountered in her mind. I think the Angel's effect on her is supposed to be intensely painful, but Rei's so stoic and unexpressive that she just isn't letting on.

With no other options, Gendo deploys Shinji to assist, but Rei doesn't want to put him at risk, so she activates some sort of self-destruct on her Eva. She refuses to abandon the Eva, because she needs to stay with it to maintain its AT field. I'm not sure why the self-destruct would work, since Rei already shot the Angel at point-blank range with no effect, but it does destroy the target, so I guess she knows what she's doing.

Ritsuko leads a recovery mission and they find the entry plug from Unit 00, but there doesn't seem to be any evidence of survivors.

Afterward, Misato tries to comfort Shinji but he refuses any affection from her, as it his wont. Then Misato gets a phone call...

And Rei's alive! Suspiciously, she has all the same injuries she had when she debuted in Episode 1, but I don't know if that's supposed to mean anything. Shinji thanks Rei for sacrificing Unit 00 to save him from the Angel's powers, but she has no memory of doing that.

Shinji doesn't understand, and she replies that it's "probably because I'm the third one." Hoo-boy.

At her home, Rei... well, a Rei, I suppose... she finds that broken pair of glasses from the time Gendo rescued her from the entry plug. She had kept them as a momento of that day, but now Rei... this Rei... grips them tightly, as though trying to crush them. Then she stops, and starts crying, and she doesn't know why.

Rei's apparent survival does raise some awkward questions. Admiral Clownshoes warns that this might cause problems with SEELE, and Gendo says he's bypassed this by sending them "an alternative."

That is, apparently, Ritsuko, who has been brought before SEELE to answer their questions in Rei's place. This is sort of like when SEELE questioned Misato a while back, because they wanted to talk to Shinji, and Misato refused to allow it because of his poor mental state. Well, this time Ritsuko is standing in for Rei, probably because Gendo didn't want SEELE to learn more about Rei.

And for some reason, Ritsuko appears to be nude for this interview? I mean, she could be wearing some strapless dress or something. I don't know what the point of this is. Anyway, she acts cool about it until SEELE informs her that Gendo was the one who put her here on the hot seat in Rei's place.

Meanwhile, Misato finally opens that little capsule Kaji gave her the last time they had sex, and it contains a little microchip. His voice mail to her said that he had sent her the same information at least thirty-six ways, but he knew most of them wouldn't make it. Presumably, this was the one that got through. I had wondered why Misato hadn't bothered to follow up on Kaji's investigation of NERV's secrets, and it looks like she's been too busy grieving over him to get to this point. So it looks like she's finally ready. Maybe Rei's miraculous survival was what tipped the scales.

Later, Ritsuko calls Shinji and takes him down to the bowels of NERV headquarters, but Misato shows up to meet them and pulls a gun on Ritsuko. Misato wants to see the secret for herself, and Ritsuko agrees, if Shinji can come along. Misato's fine with that, so off they go.

She takes them to a room that looks a lot like Rei's apartment, and Ritsuko explains that Rei grew up in that room. Then she shows them a chamber full of failed Eva models, including the one Shinji's mom was working on when she died. Apparently Shinji doesn't remember that he saw her die, but Ritsuko tells him he was there when it happened.

Then she takes them to the room where Rei would soak in that tube full of Tang. As I thought, this is how they made the Dummy Plug, but it's more than just recording Rei's brain patterns.

All around the room is a big tank full of Reis. I kind of saw this coming, but still, this is pretty creepy.

What's extra creepy is how they all open their eyes and smile at Shinji when he says their name. Ritsuko explain what they are and what they're for, but I don't really get it. Let me just transcribe the subtitles:

"Right, this is the production factory. These are all dummies. They are also replacement parts for Rei. Man found God, and they tried to pick him up. For that Man was punished! That was fifteen years ago, and the God they found disappeared. Then Man tried to resurrect God with his own hands, and created Adam. From Adam, Man created what resembles God, Himself. That is Eva! We put supposedly mindless human souls in Eva. All the souls were salvaged souls. Rei is the only container that can hold the souls. The souls are born only in Rei. The Room of Guaf is empty. These are empty containers. They have no souls. So, I want to destroy them because I hate them."

Ritsuko triggers some sort of destruct mechanism that causes the Rei bodies to disintegrate. As they die (?), Ritsuko explains that she was willing to endure any humiliation for Gendo Ikari, but in the end, he would always prefer "these dolls" over her.

And she knew it would be this way, because she was there when her mother tried to win Gendo's heart, and ended up destroying herself because she couldn't win over Rei. I guess Ritsuko also had the hots for Gendo? She might be speaking in a more platonic sense, I don't know. The point is that all her years of loyal service to Gendo are meaningless, and he'll sell her out to protect Rei in a heartbeat.

That's what she realized in the SEELE conference, so I'm not clear on what exactly went on there. Did they punish her for the loss of Unit 00? Was that why Gendo sent her in Rei's place? Is that why Ritsuko was nude? In any event, Ritsuko's finally decided she's had enough, so she's turning on Gendo, at least as far as destroying all the spare Reis and showing Misato and Shinji all the super secret stuff.

The thing is, does that even matter? I mean, Gendo's no dummy. He probably betrayed Ritsuko this way knowing she would turn on him like this. For all we know, this is part of his plan. Maybe that's why Ritsuko starts crying, and why she pleads for Misato to kill her.

Misato declines to shoot Ritsuko, and considers that the tragedy of this whole project lies in its people, including herself.

So... yeah. NERV has been mass-producing Rei for years, and I think it's reasonable to assume Rei is at least partially based on Yui Ikari. I'm not sure that Gendo is like, in love with the clones or something. The Akagis may have been frustrated that he likes Rei more than them, but I think it's more of a situation where Gendo is too fixated on his work to love any woman, even a woman who helps him with his work. And the work is embodied by Rei so that's why he gets along so well with Rei. I guess.

The next episode looks forward to the final battle against the 17th Angel, which is supposed to be the last one, but apparently they still haven't finished Episode 24, since the preview is all rough sketches and animation layouts. I guess we'll see what we see...
