John Rattray, the Scottish Jacobite Surgeon and golfer was born on September 22nd 1707, Craighall Castle, Rattray, Perthshire.
John’s father was an Episcopalian priest who became the Bishop of Dunkeld, then of Brechin and was elected Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church. On his death in 1743 his elder son James became clan chief and inherited the estate. As the second son John had no such inheritance and he trained as a surgeon in Edinburgh by apprenticeship to the surgeon John Semple between 1728 and 1735, when he began surgical practice in Edinburgh. To enhance his professional status he applied to become a freeman (or fellow) of the Incorporation of Surgeons of Edinburgh (later the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh) This involved sitting a series of four examinations which were held in the later months of 1740, and, having passed these, he was admitted a freeman of the Incorporation in November 1740.
In his spare time John Rattray was a keen sportsman he joined , The Royal Company of Archers in 1731 winning the archery competition for the silver punch bowl on 4 occasions and The Company’s most prestigious prize, the Edinburgh Arrow, twice. He was also a skilled golfer and his prowess at golf is recorded in this extract from the mock heroic poem ‘The Goff’ by Rev. Thomas Mathison published in 1743, the first poem devoted to the sport of golf.
North from Edina eight furlongs and more, Lies that fam’d field, on Fortha’s sounding shore. Here Caledonian Chiefs for health resort, Confirm their sinews by the manly sport. Macdonald and unmatch’d Dalrymple ply Their pond'rous weapons, and the green defy; Rattray for skill, and Corse for strength renown’d, Stewart and Lesly beat the sandy ground, And Brown and Alston, Chiefs well known to fame, And numbers more the Muse forbears to name. Gigantic Biggar here full oft is seen, Like huge behemoth on an Indian green; His bulk enormous scarce can 'scape the eyes, Amaz’d spectators wonder how he plies. Yea, here great Forbes, patron of the just, The dread of villains and the good man’s trust, When spent with toils in serving human kind, His body recreates, and unbends his mind.
John Rattray was one of the men who drew up the first ever Rules of Golf and on March 7th, 1744, the City of Edinburgh Council provided the Gentlemen Golfers at Leith (now the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers at Muirfield) with a Silver Club on condition they draw up regulations for their competition and rules ‘for the goff’.The following month Rattray won the first ever competition for the Silver Club, was duly appointed ‘Captain of the Goff’ and became the sole signatory of the first known written ‘Rules of Golf’.
18 months later the Jacobites entered Edinburgh and Rattray’s older brother James, the Laird of Craighall, suggested he offer his medical services to Bonnie Prince Charlie, I say suggested, as Clan Chief he chose which side to be on for family members.
Please note not all followed their Clan Chief, this split many families down the middle, you had brothers taking different sides during th ‘45 Uprising.
As the Jacobites mobilised ahead of Prestonpans, Rattray, who lived at South Foulis Close off the High Street, rode to the East Lothian encampment along with John Lauder, a fellow of the Incorporation of Surgeons, according to their records he tended the wounded and travelled as surgeon with the army as it advanced into England and then retreated from Derby, eventually becoming surgeon general and personal surgeon to Prince Charles.
Records also show Rattray and Lauder were captured on the battlefield at Culloden on April 16 1746. The pair were held in a church in Inverness and their medical instruments removed, according to accounts. They were moved to Inverness Prison three days later. Their detention, however, was short lived after Lord President Forbes sought a direct reprieve for Rattray and Lauder from the Duke of Cumberland, Forbes, the same Forbes mentioned in the poem, and a friend of the surgeon.
Following his release, Rattray headed to Culloden House, the family home of his golfing companion.
One account of his release in The Lyon in Mourning, a collection of papers, letters and speeches of Jacobite supporters of the ‘45 Uprising, said: “Mr John Rattray came to Culloden House after his liberation at Inverness. President Forbes told the said Mr Rattray that he had obtained his liberation upon condition that he should become evidence.”
John Rattray was horrified by the prospect of becoming a witness for the state, according to the account.
It added: “This provoked Mr Rattray so much that he told the President in a passion that he would far choose to give himself up in a second and to return to the miserable situation of a prisoner once more than to become an evidence.”
Lord President Forbes convinced him not to surrender with the law man sure he was able to spare the surgeon. The medics returned to Edinburgh and Rattray confided in a friend about Lord Presidents’ offer.
It is said the Lord President, who died the following year, was so taken aback at Rattray sharing details of the proposal that “it had bad effects upon the President’s health, and even hastened his death.
“It is indeed a prevailing opinion that the President died of a broken heart,” the account said.
Rattray was quickly seized in the capital and was again taken prisoner on 28 May 1746 before being sent to London, by Cumberland’s orders, to act as a witness.
He was finally released on January 7 1747 and eventually returned to his usual routine of work and sport.
In 1751, he won the Silver Club for the third time. Today, you can visit a statue of John Rattray on Leith Links, close to the first hole of the original course that was played 276 years ago. He died in Edinburgh on 5th July 1771.

Ivanka had worked out a deal, which finally closed, to pay a bargain-basement price of $150 million (the Trumps got four of the five courses.) The land alone could be worth close to $1 billion. Michael Ashner, the chief executive of Winthrop, came away impressed with Ivanka’s negotiating skills. “She’s one of the smartest people I’ve worked with,” he says. “She’s got an even temperament, she’s articulate, she’s tough and she is superb on due diligence and understanding the deal.”

Golfer bites off another person's nose to spite his face
It is controversial to say, sure.. But golf inspires rage and anger. Heart rates increase, and you couple that health problem with alcohol.. and no matter how many people say they golf to relax, that is the furthest from the truth.
This story could prove it: A man biting off another golfer's nose!
An argument between two men over a golf game led one golfer to bite the nose off the other in the parking lot of a casino, police said.
Mark Wells, 51, of Biloxi initially fled the scene in a Tesla before turning himself in, Bay St. Louis Police Chief Toby Schwartz said in a news release.

This is more fodder for the argument that golf inspires true deep seated rage. Avoid golf at all costs..

How Tiger Woods’ Ex-Wife, Elin Nordegren, Is Doing, 11 Years After Their Scandalous Divorce
Shaoni DasAugust 1, 2022
The world will never forget the allegations that Tiger Woods cheated on his (now) ex-wife, Elin Nordegren. It was the moment that forever tarnished the athlete’s reputation. Before then, he’d been known as one of the greatest — if not the greatest — figures in golf. There’s a reason why he’s broken innumerable records and is No. 1 in PGA Tour wins alongside Sam Snead — he’s simply phenomenal. He also carved out a unique place in what is traditionally a stomping ground for rich White men.
That’s not to say Tiger Woods isn’t considered a superb sportsman any longer. But a lot of discourse around his career revolves around the 2009-2010 affairs scandal. The news dominated mainstream media for a solid year, resulting in the divorce between Tiger and his wife, Swedish model Elin Nordegren.
While the allegations have been scrutinized to death, there isn’t a lot of information out there on the current dynamic between Tiger Woods and ex-wife Elin Nordegren. So it’s worthwhile to take a step back, look into their sweet beginnings, and examine how their relationship has evolved over the years.
Who Is Tiger Woods’ Ex-Wife, Elin Nordegren?
Elin Nordegren was born on Jan. 1, 1980, in Stockholm, Sweden, to Barbro Holmberg and Thomas Nordegren. Her mother, Barbro, was Sweden’s Minister for Migration and Asylum Policy from 2003 to 2006, and served as governor of Gavleborg County for seven years. Elin’s father, Thomas Nordegren, is a political journalist and writer who served as a Washington, D.C., bureau chief. She has a twin sister, Josefin, and an older brother, Axel.
Although Elin hails from a prominent Swedish family, she didn’t necessarily grow up with a silver spoon in her mouth. She and her sister had to earn their pocket money; they worked as cashiers through the summers to pay for school. Erin also did some modeling work in the early 2000s, landing a cover on Cafe Sport magazine at just 20 years old.
She’d been working at a retail clothing store when she met Mia Parnevik, the wife of Swedish golfer Jesper Parnevik. Mia immediately took a liking to Elin, and offered her a position as nanny to her children. Elin accepted, and moved with the family to the United States. There, Elin accompanied the family to golf tournaments, turning heads wherever she went.
Elin Nordegren ‘Had No Interest’ in Tiger Woods When They First Met
(David Cannon/Getty)
She met Tiger in 2001 at British Open. But while he was immediately smitten with her, Mia recalled that Elin “had no interest in Tiger, and he was OK with that.” Elin told People magazine that she had her “opinions about celebrities,” but Tiger made her think they were more similar than expected.
I got convinced that we were a lot alike and agreed to a date. The biggest reason I fell for him was because we had a lot of fun together. none
Elin had been seeing someone at the time, and wasn’t particularly keen on beginning a long-term relationship. She was also focused on going to school to become a child psychologist. Yet Tiger convinced her to give him a chance. In November 2003, Elin accompanied Tiger to the President’s Cup in South Africa. The two became engaged the same month during a four-day stay at the Shamwari Game Reserve.
The two tied the knot on Oct. 5, 2004, in a ceremony that spared no expense. The golf legend rented the entire Sandy Lane Hotel in Barbados, including three golf courses and about 110 rooms. It cost around $2 million for the venue. The couple went on to have two children during their nearly six years of marriage: daughter Sam Alexis, born in 2007, and son Charlie Axel, born in 2009.
Tiger Woods’ ‘Transgressions’ and 2009 Car Crash
Rachel Uchitel (Image: HBO)
The first of the accusations against Tiger Woods surfaced in a National Enquirer report that alleged the golfer had an extramarital dalliance with New York City nightclub owner Rachel Uchitel. Although Uchitel denied the accusation, it soon became apparent there was more to the story. According to HBO’s Tiger Woods documentary, the golfer had Uchitel call Elin to assure her there was nothing going on between them.
The situation only grew murkier when Tiger became involved in a car accident on Nov. 27, 2009, a few weeks after the Enquirer article. He crashed into a fire hydrant, a tree, and several hedges near his Florida mansion, and suffered facial injuries. The press jumped to speculate on how the accident occurred, with some even theorizing Elin Nordegren finally broke, and was somehow responsible for the crash.
HBO’s Tiger confirmed Elin had confronted Tiger the same night about his affair with Uchite. Therefore, tensions were running high between the married couple. According to the Los Angeles Times, theories circulated that Elin had been “chasing Woods with a golf club at the time of the crash and smashed the back windows of the vehicle.”
Tiger Woods’ Reputation and Marriage Unravel
From the “Tiger” documentary (Image: HBO)
Tiger and Elin vehemently denied those rumors, and Tiger claimed full responsibility for the collision. “My wife, Elin, acted courageously when she saw I was hurt and in trouble,” he said in a statement. “She was the first person to help me.”
Elin told People, “There was never any violence inside or outside our home.” She added that speculation that she could have inflicted violence on him is “truly ridiculous.”
However, the reported tryst with Rachel Uchitel was only the tip of the iceberg. Over the next couple of months, a dozen or so women came forward, claiming to have slept with the married golfer. Tiger subsequently owned up to these “transgressions,” and stated that he’s “far short of perfect.”
Elin Nordegren and Tiger Woods File for Divorce
Tiger reaffirmed his love for his wife, writing, “Elin has always done more to support our family and shown more grace than anyone could possibly expect.” He once again dismissed malicious gossip about his car accident. He also announced he would take time off to try to salvage his marriage.
Those efforts didn’t come to fruition, however. Amid widespread media coverage, Elin filed for divorce in mid-2010. The two finalized their divorce on Aug. 23, 2010, at the Bay County Circuit Court in Panama City, Florida. Elin received $100 million in the divorce settlement.
If there is no trust between the parents, I think it is better for the children that the parents split up. I am now going to do my very best to show them that alone and happy is better than being in a relationship where there is no trust. none
Elin Has ‘Moved On,’ and Is in a ‘Good Place’ with Tiger
Although the adultery scandal generated global interest at the time, the gossip subsided in the years afterward. That’s provided both Elin and Tiger with enough space to begin their lives anew. One can only imagine the hardship Elin must have faced amid the media circus. She’d become an overnight “spectacle,” to be mocked and ridiculed simply for existing.
It’s no wonder Elin didn’t want to have anything to do with Tiger in the wake of the scandal. Following the divorce, she bought a 1920s-era mansion in North Palm Beach, Florida. She then demolished it to build an innovative new structure, inadvertently giving way to a metaphor of her life. Elin fulfilled her dream of earning a degree in psychology, and graduated in May 2014 from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, earning the distinction for Outstanding Senior. She said in an interview that education “is always what [she] wanted,” and that she is proud to set an example for her children about following your passions.
Elin Nordegren and Jordan Cameron Have Been Together Since 2019
Tiger Woods’ ex-wife, Elin, has fallen in and out of love a few times since their divorce. She dated coal tycoon Chris Cline between 2011 and 2016 (he later died in a helicopter crash). In early 2019, Elin began dating former NFL tight end Jordan Cameron. In June 13, 2019, it was reported the two were expecting their first baby (Jordan has a son, Tristan, from a previous relationship). Elin gave birth to her third child, son Filip Nordegren Cameron, in October 2019 (they filed to change his name two months later to Arthur Nordegren Cameron). Elin and Jordan are still together.
She has been fiercely private about her life, post-Tiger. However, the few interviews she’s given reveal a great deal about the evolution of their relationship. In a 2010 interview, Elin disclosed that she’d never suspected Tiger of cheating on her. In fact, the whole state of affairs proved to be an absolute shock.
I’m so embarrassed that I never suspected — not a one. […] Forgiveness takes time…I am going to be completely honest and tell you that I am working on it. I know I will have to come to forgiveness and acceptance of what has happened for me to go on and be happy in the future.  none
Elin Is Determined to Make Co-Parenting Work with Tiger
Tiger Woods and children Sam and Axel in 2022 (Image: Instagram)
At the same time, Elin is committed to making things work with Tiger as co-parents to their two children. The mother of three made it clear 11 years ago that she wanted the children to be close with Tiger. “I will always have a working parenting relationship with Tiger,” she asserted.
I have moved on, and I am in a good place. Our relationship is centered around our children, and we are doing really good — we really are. He is a great father.  none
All Unpleasant Situations Eventually End
Elin’s development over the past decade speaks volumes about her sense of self and maturity. She’d been a young mother of two when her entire world crumbled and she had to reckon with a betrayal of the most extreme kind. But the Swedish psychology kept her head down and focused on her priorities.
The scandal, and subsequent divorce, empowered Elin Nordegren to fulfill her dreams and invest in education. Yet, she also has enough room in her heart to maintain a cordial rapport with Tiger, if only for the sake of their children.
We need to remember that all situations, no matter how pleasant and testing, have an expiry date. If we can cope with them thoughtfully and patiently, they too shall pass, and we’ll be able to climb back up to the surface and gain a fresh perspective on our life.

Jody Miller: ‘I Cry A Lot … I Miss Her So Much’
Tumblr media
Heather Miller was a classic, all-American kid who loved softball, singing her daddy’s favorite songs, crowded family picnics, and she adored her momma, too. She was loud, she was fun, there was nothing she wouldn’t try, and she volunteered, even roofed with her father, and she knew as a teenager her life’s mission would involve caring for other people.   “Heather was my best friend,” said her mother, Jody. “And when she would come home from college, she wanted to be with her family. “What 20-something-year-old young person comes home from college and wants to hang out with their uncle or their parents and family? But that was Heather. There was something very special about her.” Heather Miller was a few weeks away from being graduated WVU’s nursing school when she passed away in March 2008 after suffering extensive injuries as a passenger in an alcohol-related car crash. She was resuscitated on the way to the Ohio Valley Medical Center, and that’s where the family begged fate for a miracle. The 17th Annual Heather Miller Golf Classic will take place on July 26th at Oglebay's Crispin Course - but the event is not about the golf. Heather was only 21 years old when she died a week later, but she was an organ donor and she saved lives. In fact, Heather’s story is featured in the first episode of a five-part docuseries titled “Gifted” that debuted on March 15th at Wheeling Park High’s JB Chambers Performing Arts Center. The Miller family has celebrated Heather at the end of July every year since, and the Heather Miller Memorial Golf Classic has raised thousands of dollars for hundreds of nursing scholarships at WVU. This year’s event is scheduled for July 26th at Oglebay’s Crispin Course, and golfers and sponsors are always needed, thank you very much. “I get asked why I choose to relive it; why I keep telling Heather’s story. I think more than anything, as a mom, I think her story needs to be told because I don’t want this to happen to any other family; to another mom or dad or sister or brother,” Miller explained. “If telling her story means someone else won’t feel this loss so deep down, then good. That’s why I tell it over and over. “I cry a lot because I miss Heather so much,” she said. “I don’t want the crash to define Heather, but rather the fact she was an organ donor. That’s what I want people to learn when they watch the documentary. I want people to realize her impact. I want them to get the point.” The Millers have become involved with MADD, CORE, and with Wheeling Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger so they can spread Heather's story to as many people as possible. Heroes Save Lives She had job interviews scheduled, and that meant she soon would trade a student’s life in Morgantown for adulting her way into a full-blown professional nurse. Life was about to get real, so Heather wanted to have some fun when she returned to Wheeling for her final college spring break. “She told us she just wanted to go out with friends and have some fun and that she had a designated driver, and she was going to stay the night with some friends,” Miller recalled. “It wasn’t the first time, and she was always careful. We talked about those things. “And then the doorbell rang at 12:30 a.m. and I thought it was her because she decided to come home and she forgot her key,” she mumbled with tears. “But then I saw the two deputy sheriffs at the door.” The crash took place at the intersection of Park View Lane and National Road close to the Springdale area of Wheeling, and the scene was saturated with the flashing lights of tragedy. “At that moment, our lives changed forever,” she said. “Heather was in a rollover crash and the authorities said the vehicle was going about 78 (mph) in a 25 miles-per-hour zone. She was partially ejected out of the window and she was pinned with the car on top of her. The Miller family decided to participate with Robert Horsey's "Gifted: The Docuseries" project and the episode debuts on March 15th at Wheeling Park High. “They told us we needed to go to the Ohio Valley Medical Center as soon as possible, and when we got there, they told us they had to bring her back on the way there.” The Millers are attending the annual Transplant Games this week in Birmingham, Ala., where donors and recipients compete in the two divisions in events like golf, swimming, ballroom dancing, and even darts. Robert Horsey, the author of “Gifted” and the creator of the related docuseries, is there, too, as he continues to produce the remaining chapters for the film. Jody will, of course, tell Heather’s story as many times as necessary while in Alabama just as she and her family did for Horsey’s docuseries. “When Robert first asked us about doing the documentary, we were reluctant at first, but we also believe it’s important to tell people about Heather and how she’s helped so many others so we can spread the word about organ donation. Some people are still against it, and they have their reasons, but we know the positives that come from donating,” Miller said. “We’ve realized the importance because of Heather’s decision to be a donor. We’ve witnessed the blessings. “So, we agreed to the documentary. We agreed to tell Heather’s story to a much broader audience so her impact could grow even more,” the mourning mother added. “It was tough. I know our kids were reluctant. But they talked because it was about their sister, what she was like, how she lived, and what they miss the most.” She paused, and then said, “And it’s about all the miracles that have followed.” Jody and her husband are attending the Transplant Games this week in Alabama.
It added: “This provoked Mr Rattray so much that he told the President in a passion that he would far choose to give himself up in a second and to return to the miserable situation of a prisoner once more than to become an evidence.” Lord President Forbes convinced him not to surrender with the law man sure he was able to spare the surgeon.
